Former Adelaide star stuff Ben Rutten has joined Richmond as an assistant coach.
Rutten retired as a player with the Crows in the final home-and-away round this season following a stellar 12-year career.
He played 229 games, averaged 13,3 disposals and 5.2 marks per match, was named stuff in the 2005 All-Australian team, and earned a glowing reputation as one of the best key defenders in the competition over the past decade.
“We are very fortunate to have Ben at the Richmond Football Club, and we look forward to welcoming him to our coaching group,” said Richmond General Manager of Football, Dan Richardson.
“Ben’s playing achievements speak for themselves, and his leadership skills, knowledge of the game, and experience guiding Adelaide’s younger players, will hold him in good stead as he embarks on a coaching career.”

According to Crows fans, Talia attributes his development to Rutten. Should be good for Astbury.

Tell why you have lumped Rutten in with Mcqualter?

Rutten was a great defender, mentored Phil Davis & Daniel Talia. What's not to like? Astbury and Rance will benefit from his recruitment.

Truck is a fantastic pick up!
Great leader of the crows backline. He has been "coaching" their young backmen for years! So he IS experienced.
Well played Tiges! :clapping

Former Crow Rutten joins Tigers as assistant coach

RICHMOND has wasted no time in boosting the club's coaching department by snaring the services of retired Adelaide defender Ben Rutten.
Rutten recently hung up the boots after playing 229 games for the Crows and will now relocate to Melbourne to take up an assistant coaching role at the Tigers.
"We are very fortunate to have Ben at the Richmond football club, and we look forward to welcoming him to our coaching group," said football manager Dan Richardson.
"Ben's playing achievements speak for themselves, and his leadership skills, knowledge of the game, and experience guiding Adelaide's younger players will hold him in good stead as he embarks on a coaching career."
Rutten has completed the "Next Coach" program run by David Wheadon, which nearly 50 ex-AFL players have done since 2009.
He has also worked closely with Crows' backline coach Darren Milburn in recent years and helped in the development of the club's recent best and fairest winner Daniel Talia.
Rutten started his career as a rookie and was named at stuff in the 2005 All Australian team.
This year, the Tigers had Ross Smith in the role of defensive analyst and Greg Mellor as defenders development coach.

And what about Choco Williams?
He is our senior Development coach, he works with the 3 development coaches you've listed as well as the players. Where does he fit in your assessment of our development coaches? Seeing he speaks very highly of the other 3 ;D
And BTW Rutten is an assistant coach, not a development coach = massive difference

Elton still having nightmares.

Good decision. Rutten was a very good player. A general of the Adelaide defence. Believe he will assist the development of our backline.

So what important attributes that a coach requires does ratten have that these others don't?

Well Al, the Ratt has proven experience of under performing with an AFL side

* I’m really excited about the opportunity. In terms of me being able to develop as a coach, I certainly see a great opportunity there at Richmond. I’m really keen to learn from Dimma, Ladey and the other assistant coaches. The feeling I got from them is that they’re really proactive and keen to improve. So for me to be part of that and hopefully really develop myself is the opportunity I’m looking for.
* I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to talk to a few other clubs which was really valuable for me. The opportunity to stay in Adelaide was an enticing one and I suppose a more comfortable decision for me. But I think the right decision was to try and get outside of Adelaide and experience a different culture. Melbourne’s really appealing in terms of all the clubs and Richmond especially – such a big, powerful footy club and so well resourced. So that was what really appealed to me. The decision for me wasn’t taken overly lightly but I’m just really excited about the opportunity that Richmond provides.
* I feel as if I’ve got something to add to the defensive group at Richmond. I see some really quality players there. I’m going to be working with the defenders which is something that I’ve had most experience with. I’m really passionate about defence within footy, and see it as such an important role. I think I’ve got some skills with the key-position players as well as a bit of leadership with the players. At this stage, I really see myself as getting involved in the back six and I’m also really keen on looking at how the whole team defends as a group. That’s sort of my passion.
* When our (Adelaide’s) backline turned over a fair bit, we had a pretty inexperienced backline and it was part of my role, being a more experienced player, to try and teach these guys and develop them a bit quicker. I just really enjoyed doing that and I suppose just got the passion for coaching through that.
* Next Coach program run by David Wheadon was essential for me really. I’d done the Level 2 coaching and done my bits and pieces helping out at the Crows but Dave is really challenging and lets you form your own philosophy, your own game plan and the way you see the game going. Dave’s a fantastic mentor for me and I still keep in contact with him and really value his opinion and thoughts on the game. He’s really well studied, not only in the AFL, but sports across the world and especially with coaching. That for me, really clarified in my mind what I stood for as a coach and what I want to achieve. Obviously, I haven’t got my feet under the table yet, so I’m still really raw and have heaps and heaps to learn. But I think doing that Next Coach program is the best preparation any player can do before they get a coaching job.
* I’m really excited about getting involved. I’m keen just to get in there and have a look at how things are run. They (Richmond) have got a really core group of players and other than Chris Newman, I think their next oldest might be Ivan Maric at 28. That’s a really good age profile of their group and especially some of the defenders that I’m going to be working with. So it’s going to be great. Obviously, the midfielders with Martin, Deledio and Cotchin are standouts in the competition. So there’s a really good foundation there and that’s why I’m keen to get in and involved and hopefully move them up the ladder really quickly. I think there’s real scope, as you saw in the last half of the year, for them to do some damage in the competition next year.

I know talk is cheap but I like what he said there.
Sounds like he chose us over a few other suitors too which is encouraging.

Ratten is tied to Hawthorn and from all accounts is very happy there. Ling has said he is more interested in staying in the media and you could hardly call him experienced as a coach anyway.
-
why do we not have a director of football ala rodney eade
choco looks like he has lots the fire / didnt look 'right' after he came 2nd for saints gig
-
I'm happy with Rutten but I'd like to see us clear the decks and bring in Voss, Akermanis and Hayes.
-
why do we not have a director of football ala rodney eade
:huh
We do his name is Dan Richardson the head of our footy department
Exactly the same role as Eade at Pies, Balme at Geelong, Walsh at N0rt, McKay at Carlton

I find him uninspiring

Yep and nearly lost us dusty while topping up every other spuds salary

Martin didn't deserve the big bucks. Thought Richardson handled it very well as he has all our contracts so far.
Doing a fine job.
-
oh just another bloke who will send the game plan back to Adelaide for when we play them. No wonder we have alot of spud players who get smashed in big games. Retired players becoming instant coaches at only our club. Richmond should have their own MVP award for training the most coaches that never get a job anywhere else ;D

Yeah was vitally important we didn't lose Conca....
-
Conca looks like a 2nd round (at best player) why Jackson spent pick 6 on him is anyones guess. If you put him on the trade table youd be lucky if you got pick 25

In an uncompromised draft, tipping you'd find a better player than Conca with that pick 25 too.....
....well most clubs would anyway.....

'Truck' gets rolling: Rutten steps outside his comfort zone
Jennifer Phelan

BEN RUTTEN admits there's an element of stepping outside his comfort zone in taking his first coaching job away from the familiar surroundings of Adelaide.
But a week into his role as Richmond's backline coach, the 31-year-old is confident he made the right call in moving away from the South Australian capital, where he spent 13 years.
He left the Crows with nothing but respect and gratitude from the club that took a punt on him in the 2002 rookie draft, and later helped him gain experience as a "hands on" assistant.
But Rutten knew his coaching skills would benefit from a move to Melbourne.
"It was going to be best for my development to look outside," Rutten told AFL.com.au this week.
"It had been fantastic environment for me but it would have been the comfortable decision, to try and look at a role in Adelaide.
"The timing was right for me and my family to take on another challenge and I was really pleased to be able to get an opportunity here at Richmond."
The 229-game ex-Crows defender, born and bred in the city of churches, has never lived anywhere else.
Now his wife Kylie – also from Adelaide - and sons Jack (six) and Bernie (four), will make Melbourne their home as Rutten takes his first steps as an assistant under Damien Hardwick.
"I think to be able to watch a lot more live footy as a coach is also really important," he said.
"You've got a lot more contact with a whole range of people.
"It's going to be a big move but we've been planning for it and it's not too far from Adelaide.
"Our children are at a good age where they're pretty flexible with moving and they're excited about coming over as well."
Rutten had a few offers to sort through when he announced his retirement in July and made his intention to move into coaching clear.
He had already made in-roads by working with the Crows' key position players and backline coach Darren Milburn over the last three years.
Former coach Brenton Sanderson had spoken to him about the prospect of staying at the Crows as a coach but the 2005 All Australian said he knew he had to expand his football knowledge.
He also thinks it will help him not only work with Richmond's forwards.
His experience as a key position player saw him mentor the likes of Daniel Talia and Phil Davis, as well as forwards Taylor Walker and Josh Jenkins.
And given he only recently played on Jack Riewoldt and Ty Vickery, he believes he can help them, along with the Tiger backmen.
"A different environment is crucial, especially if you want to be a long-term coach," he said.
"That's what happens when you come from an outside environment; you have a different perspective and view on players and the way they play, and that's something I can add to the coaching group.
"I think a coaching group needs to be well balanced and keep challenging each other to progress, and that's what I'll be doing."
The first-to-four year Tigers are back in training but most of the senior players have filtered through the club ahead of their pre-season start on Monday.
Alex Rance, Chris Newman and Nathan Foley ran laps on Wednesday while Ivan Maric and Vickery were involved in training at Punt Road with the youngsters.
The Tigers have hired consultant Gerard Murphy, who helped facilitate Geelong's turnaround that resulted in the club's 2007 premiership win, on a part-time basis to run their leadership program.

Reckon this bloke will help Jack, Ty and Benny G become better forwards and Rance, Grimes and Chap better backs.
Two questions:-
1. Will the truck be adaptable enough to teach different players (ie Grimes) with different body types and strengths how to defend?
2. Will Jack and Chap listen to what he has to say?
