Damien Hardwick warns Richmond players of hard training program during pre-season
Bruce Matthews
Herald-Sun
September 30, 2014

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick warned his players to expect a torrid pre-season.

Hardwick said there would be “nowhere to hide’’ in the pursuit to raise the standards to challenge for a premiership.

The brutally honest Tigers coach laid it on the line to his playing group in a stirring call-to-arms speech at the club’s awards night at Crown.

“It was a bitterly disappointing season overall. Consecutive years of finals football was an important step for our footy club and we need to consistently play in September to give ourselves a chance. But losing elimination finals doesn’t have any of us sleeping soundly at night,’’ Hardwick said.

“We must not accept what has happened in the last two years or feel in any way comfortable with it. We haven’t achieved anything and, if we don’t start thinking differently, nothing will change.’’

Hardwick told a packed Palladium room that players were made aware of the unacceptable exit to an underachieving season in the review following the cruel elimination final loss to Port Adelaide.

“Finals are the first month of the season, the most important part of the season starts in September. We told the players exactly that after our elimination final loss a couple of weeks ago,’’ he said.

“We embarrassed ourselves and our club with that performance. It has got to cut deep and, more importantly, it has to genuinely hurt.

“We’ll find out when the players return for the pre-season who is really hurt and, more importantly, what is going to happen going forward.

“We need to find a burning desire to keep raising our standards and there will be nowhere to hide in pursuit of that.

“It has to be a collective effort and collective accountability from every single person in our football department and every single person within our football club. The players have to ask themselves, ‘Do I want to play in a good team or do I want to play in a bloody great team?’ “I’ve got no doubt they’ll be prepared to make the sacrifice and we have to be willing to pay the price.

“I’m very confident of that from the moment they set foot inside the club walls for the start of 2015 pre-season.”

I'm not too sure what else you would expect him to say.
I'm looking forward to an off season of very little media as they are completely focussed on walking their talk.

From what I could tell from the live stream, people demanded they turn the music up....

What was the feeling in the room while Hardwick spoke those who attended?

Heard a couple of people say "finally" and "we'll know more rd 1"

I will confess I only really started paying attention when he said we hadn't improved. Personally wanted to hear something like that, wanted to hear that the 2 finals losses were unacceptable.

Reckon most people were pleased he said what he did but I tend to lean towards the "we'll know more rd1" viewpoint.

12 months ago he and the club talked things up and we know what happened... Think people are reserving their collective judgement and I can understand that

If we don't smash Carlton who are a dead set rabble and will finish bottom 4 then we are in for a crap season ending in disappointment.. Again ! 8+ goals or I won't believe

Cotch's B&F speech and him talking about next year ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-09-30/jdm-2014-trent-cotchins-speech

-------------------------------------------------------------------

* We started something this year. We took a few steps back earlier in the year and learned a lot of lessons. I’m very proud of our playing group with how far they came throughout the back part of the year but more so in the beginning, when the times were tough. The 3-10 start obviously not where you want to be as a football club, who’s very proud.

* I love playing with each and every one of you.  I look forward to seeing some of our younger faces come through the ranks through pre-season into next season.  It’s only going to make our group a lot stronger.

* When Luke Hodge was holding up the cup, with ‘Clarko’ (Alastair Clarkson), from an individual point of view, so much envy for what they’ve achieved as a group. All I want for us, as a group to achieve, is that ultimate goal. Who knows, we get a first one and hopefully one day we’ll be a great team and people will be talking about us like Hawthorn of 2013-14. Our journey, it’s only just started.

* As Dimma said, this pre-season’s going to be a really challenging one.  We’re going to hold each other really accountable. So stick with us. We’re going to be louder and prouder next year and we’re going to be bigger and stronger.

I think it is fair for the coach, captain and winners of the awards to get up and speak at a club function.
I would also say that their words were both measured and relevant to how we have performed and what should be next.

I also think it's a little unfair to compare what Dimma and the club have achieved compared to the other coaches (not sure why Dimma appears twice?) but I get the sentiment.
Once the pre season starts, let's hope the club battens down the hatches and only speaks when it has to along with dampening any newspaper hype.
If that merry go round starts, WAT you are totally correct in your post.

Given the hit our memberships took this year because of the crap they dished up, I'll have an uneducated guess that they will be smashing us with positive hype come pre-season proper.   :help

Smokey, I'd like to think that the leads ethic at the club is smart enough to realise how that will come across if they attempt that in the upcoming off season.
Let's hope so anyway.

Port have reset the bar for what is a minimum level of fitness required to take into an AFL season. We , along with most other teams , are well behind them right now.
It's time to get super fit.

Welcome to three years ago..

Precisely.

Pretty rich coming from the guy whom the players had to confront
regarding sub par training and discipline issues in round 11.

Interesting to note, his perspective during this lapse of professionalism,
was “In a funny sort of way, and our win-loss record doesn’t indicate this, but we are a better side than last year, which is important to us,’’

The guy's not a premiership coach, let alone a finals one.

He can't get them up for occassions nor has he employed those with such an ability.

He recruits Hampson and Thomas while he gives Newman another 12 months.

What's not to fire this bloke in light of sackings by Adelaide and GC?

You know what, I never thought of it in that light. I've always been in the 'players are more responsible for their performances on game day' camp because the coach can only do so much. But the fact he didn't absolutely tear them a new one when they weren't training hard enough is a joke and surely come selection time those standards should of been punished.

what have they  done to rectify this. that is what should be asked. have we improved the fitness dept or sacked people for gross failure.

talk is one thing action is another. people will support if they can actually see something being done. but when its always spin spin spin and more talk with no action then rightly so people get sceptical and critical.

if they want to stop the criticism then they need to do something to show they actually acknowledge the problem.
