Title: Who was the best ever kick at Tigerland?
Post by: one-eyed on November 06, 2014, 07:02:44 PM
The RFC website has a poll to find out the best kick(s) at Tigerland over the past half-century. So I thought I'd make it a poll here and get the opinions of the wise-heads of OER  ;D.

Who was the best kick you've ever seen at Tigerland?

This poll is a disgrace without Marty Knights as a candidate  :huh

could not kick with his right. He was also a terrible kick for goal on the set shot

Wasn't the best of his era.

Leon Cameron was a stuff on either side. Any time you don't know what the players natural foot is says something.

I saw each player from his first game to his last & this is a dead-set easy one - Ian Stewart by the length of the straight!
Stewy could hit those classic flat spinning left footed drop kicks (on a 70's mud heap/horse paddock), they went 50-60mtrs but the ball barely got above head high & always put it on a platter for the forwards.  Classic running kick, never wasted a footy.
For sheer skill level it is an Ian Stewart 60mtr stab pass & then daylight!  Special mention for freakish skill level to Magic Maurice too ...
Best set shot: Michael Roach

Dooks is right.
Strange response Blaisee ? 95% of left footers have no right side over the history of the game.
Knights was one of the best kicks of the football in RFC history and as for him being a terrible kick for goal on the set shot ? That's just straight up wrong.

Stewart was good but there's no way known he was ' the length of the straight ahead ' , or ' daylight second '
You've only got to look at the old footage to see that none of the players in the 60's had anywhere near the skills of latter day players.
Truth is Leon Cameron crapped all over Ian Stewart but it's all relative.

Rioli was brilliant all round. kicking , handballing and tackling.
Agree on Roach. He was a set shot genius. So was Taylor.
From a purist point of view I think Jim Jess was as good a kick of the footy as Richmond has had but he wasn't a voting option so I went with Rainesy.  Simply because to be able to roost it 70 meters onto the chest of Disco without a single hair going out of place is an art in itself.

Agree on Jim Jess - his 90 mtr goal at Moorabbin from chb was the best running torp I have ever seen!  Very skillful!  Speaking of skillful - how many current day players can deliver a 50mtr stab pass (thats a drop-kick pass, for those who have never seen one) out of a ploughed up centre square with a water logged old ball while wearing boots that resembled concrete blocks!  Thats the ultimate in footskills in the worst conditions!  Thats why its Ian Stewart & then daylight!  Raines was a beautiful kick too, but he committed THE cardinal sin that I can never forgive - he went to Collingwood for money!   :scream  (& Brisbane Bears    :banghead ... & Effendon ...  :banghead  :banghead)

Mattie Knights was a beautiful kick on his left, clever and creative.
The issue of not having a right foot is less the skill and moreso how it would limit the effectiveness of the player.
James Hird had no left foot but you wouldn't know.
I don't think Mattie was as seamless at being on his left side all the time, I recall him getting stuck a few times trying to get back on his left - he was no Bacher Houli tho - it's excruciating watching him trying to wheel around on his left side.

Hirds  a not a good kick

Its awful watching houli wheels to his left side. You can make a cup of tea in the time it takes

Bakes was best field kick by a country mile but Roachy IMV was without doubt the best shot at goal. (Michael not Tom  ;D)

Cameron, either foot from long range.

Angle no good? No worries, kick with the left. That's a real talent there...

Shank's just as bad wheeling around to his right. For a chicken legged twig, he has a bigger turning circle than Emile Heskey.

Cameron then lids in recent history. Maxfield on  the run was good and Trent Nicholls also had to ability to kick very well.
