Title: Richmond and long-time leadership guru Gerard Murphy part ways [updated]
Post by: Diocletian on November 19, 2014, 01:52:08 AM

RICHMOND has appointed the man who helped facilitate Geelong's 2007 turnaround that ended in premiership glory, leadership consultant Gerard Murphy.

Murphy, a Leading Teams founder and highly credentialed consultant who worked with the Cats periodically from the first of their three premiership years until the end of last season, started at Punt Road last week.

He will work with the club's players and coaches as a part-time consultant and will assist in the assembly of the 2015 leadership group.

Why? Because he's from Geelong? Bomber Thompson is from Geelong and so is "The Missile". Are we going to applaud them if Richmond bring them to the club?
I've heard Leading Teams program is overrated.
I'd like to know more about the substance of this appointment- part time consultants are risky - and expensive.

I'm sceptical about the whole concept myself -reeks of flakey Dr.Phil pop psychology bollocks and for every Geelong there's probably a dozen Footscrays- but the club already uses Leading Teams; brought it in last year I think. Would've likely been under the LT model that they all had a crack at Cotchin for not being a demanding enough captain and Hardwick for not being harder on them as coach.

Leading teams has worked really well for some clubs and not at all for others-  just depends on the dynamic at a particular club.

didn't rfc bring in leading teams for one season a few years back, only to hole them because they were unhappy with their methodology?

Former Geelong star forward Cameron Mooney believes Richmond has made an excellent choice with its appointment late last year of Gerard Murphy as a leadership consultant.

“Steve, there was a great man down in Geelong years ago – Gerard Murphy – who headed up Leading Teams.  He came down to Geelong in 2007 and, in my opinion, turned the whole club around,” Mooney said.

“He turned the (playing) group around, and we went on and had some amazing success.

“He’s not in the Leading Teams department now, but he’s down there (at Richmond) doing his own thing with you blokes . . .”

I heard Ling talk about this guy at a presentation in 2012.

If what he said is true, this guy will help turn the club around. Very blunt assessment of individualism vs truly selfless and team orientated culture.

And if I'm saying its a positive move by the club, you know it must be

Gerard Murphy has parted ways with the Club (he left two weeks ago).

He and the senior players had a "difference of opinion" and the players wanted Murphy gone. So he's left.

Our players are ambitious, independent and assured.

If this guy is not up to the task and is demotivating, uninspiring, boring and laborious.

No brainer.

This guy was full time? How many times can they tell each other how rubbish they are? What a load of crap.

If there's been one obvious constant, since the infamous EF capitulation to the Scum Cheats or our no show at Port kicking against the wind or our limp wristed effort against the shinbonerofthemillennium Nahas Melbourne or the worst 45 seconds in the history of football to losing the unlosable against the filth or losing to the Hafey inspired Demons because he was their club champion, we know we don't have good leadership at Punt Road.

.....it's a big fail Gerard. Maybe get into politics.  :rollin

Caro on Footy Classified last night said Murphy was moved on late May/early June. Dan Richardson told her he moved on to seek other business opportunities. Caro added it was at the time Cotchin and the leadership group at Richmond were being questioned by us in the media. The push was player lead. They weren't happy with the management/leadership style of the consultant.

Lloyd talked about using Leading Teams at his time at Essendon when he was captain. He liked it as it allowed him to hear what the other players really thought of him. However, other Bomber players didn't like it as they couldn't handle that sort of criticism so it didn't work and they stopped using Leading Teams. Hutchy mentioned that younger players find it very difficult as they aren't use to it.
