Morris added to leadership group
December 10, 2014 6:39 PM
Richmond has revealed its playing leadership group for the 2015 season, with defender Steve Morris added to the five-man group.
Morris joins Trent Cotchin, Troy Chaplin, Ivan Maric and Brett Deledio in the official leadership group, which lost a member at the end of the 2014 season after the retirement of Daniel Jackson.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick made the announcement at the Club’s 2014 Annual General Meeting, held tonight at the ME Bank Centre.
Morris was voted in by the playing group, with Trent Cotchin endorsed to enter his third season as Club captain.
Since arriving at Tigerland at the end of 2011, Morris has become a dependable, hard-nosed defender on-field, and a strong leader off it.

That's a very old one Dweebo!!!!
-
Why is this surprising? Great clubman and good player. Well done Steve!
-
Certainly no guarantee for a senior spot IMO but good honest citizen and obviously highly regarded at the club
Thought Jack might have been re-added??
-
Reckon it's a good choice. Don't have to be a good player to be a good leader
-

Reckon he is now if history is anything to go by
that's why I am surprised by it.
-

:huh :huh :huh....really, so if he gets dropped how good a leader is he then, as WP has alluded to though, that wont happen. What about when he gets reported?? Good leader then??
-
Great choice. Good clubman.
-
He's our best small defender by a mile, was playing with one shoulder all year - he won't get dropped nor should he
-
Should have been Rance :shh
-

Players voted him in mate. Don't have to be best 22 to be a great leader but Morris is best 22 and always has been. Wow what if he gets reported :help he would be the first man in a LG to ever be reported :help
:help
-
Does he even get reported that often
-
couple of times a week,on average

So, he is a poo leader because of something that may occur in the future?

:yep

Players clearly rate him. Players vote!
Is Chaplin really highly rated from within?
Reiwoldt and Rance obviously don't have the confidence of the players. Maybe there jovial side isn't rated.
Or, do the coaches have the final say?
-
Not going to disagree with the players, but I just don't think I ever see him do as much leadery stuff like Rance and stuff. Clearly does stuff on the track I don't see that the players look up to. All I can think of regarding someone like Rance is they declined or requested not to be nominated.

No, but I would of thought Rance would of been a more likely selection down back.

Well I can't understand why he was chosen then
I am with WAT on this
-
Rance is a good player but he's also got the mental capacity of a 10 year old.
Not sure pretending to be a window washer on Punt Road is exactly the sort of leadership we need at this point.

Well we can't have someone in the leadership group who never plays because he is suspended
HUH

I used to think he could b a good capt but you're argument is flawless.

Everyone runs the risk of being reported so not sure of your point. To answer your question though, there is much more to leadership than playing every game. He can set the standard at training as well on the ground, show the professionalism required outside the club and not that I know if he really is but he seems to be a very approachable guy which is very beneficial to new and old players that might have something to say. Of course you want someone who plays more games than not (which Morris does) but it is not a requirement IMO and is probably the difference between being a captain (or vice) and being part of the leadership group.

Who cares if he jokes around in the off season!
The guy is a gun and leads by example ON THE FIELD!
Also SETS STANDARDS AT TRAINING!
That is what I would want from my leaders. After all it is a game of football not a university course!!!
-
Curious as to what peoples definition of leadership is
-
would people prefer rance is a robotic perfectly media trained, boring as batship type instead?
-
How about people have their own opinions, definitions and ideas...should be able to have them and express them without being belittled.
-
wtf are you on about?

Pretty well sums up what i said..

Good leadership requires separation from the people you lead.
You can't be the class clown one minute, diving into spas and doing slip'n'slides covered in detergent in the shower the next and then disciplining a team mate the next.
A bloke like Rance has an important role in the team structure, but it is for morale not leadership.

whats crap
rance continually does suicidal things for the good of the club
if there is 10 seconds left and won affect the outcome or if its 10 seconds into the start of a final
that is leadership
the players are dumb if they dont admire him for this and focus of what he was in off time
-
There is a clear difference between on-field leadership and the leadership group.
Every player is expected to lead on-field and Rance is a very good on-field leader.
A leadership group is basically a committee linking the playing group to the coaches and admin.

yes, it does - to a T, but alas, we are still no closer to knowing wtf you are on about.

That was done during the season. Not that I care really but you should make sure your facts are right before you say something
On another point I reckon TBR has nailed it. Wouldn't change Rance as it's nice to have someone that isn't robotic and whatever he does off field has been transferring to good performances on field but I don't think he is a great all round leader. Could do a lot worse though :thumbsup

I can honestly say that in my opinion I don't think any of this mob turned up today.
Absolutely terrible game by all of them it's nothing short of a disgrace to the club, the jumper and the supporters and members.
They should stand up and apologise for their non efforts and no show including Morris who wasn't even able to convince this goodbuddygamesformates match committee to keep him in this team then why is he a leader? It's bloody mind boggling.
I can't believe how bloody soft all of these pretenders really are. :banghead
They've taken softeness to a whole new level on today's performance & I still haven't forgiven any of them for the 8th September 2013 debacle. :banghead
They can all get stuffed!
-
Well Morris definitely didn't rock up!😂😂😂
-
Leadership group hugely poor. Rest of post is a bit emotional but agree.
-
I thought Morris was better than Chaplin

Well Morris definitely didn't rock up!😂😂😂
He was too tired from playing on Betts last night.
-
Sums up our club and football department making pee poor decisions like this not even in our best 22 :banghead yet in leadership.
