Ruckin' role: How your club's big-man stocks are shaping up for 2015

RICHMOND
Last year showed that Richmond is clearly a better team with a fit Ivan Maric leading the ruck. After winning just three of nine games while Maric was sidelined with an ankle injury, the Tigers won nine of their last 14 when the big man returned. A heart and soul player at Tigerland, he has been elevated to joint vice-captain this year alongside Brett Deledio.
Shaun Hampson led the ruck while Maric was injured last year, but he was sent back to the VFL when the No.1 ruckman resumed. Both are in full training this summer, giving Richmond the option of a two-pronged assault in 2015.
Rather than playing two genuine ruckmen last year, the Tigers preferred to use Ben Griffiths or Ty Vickery as pinch-hit options.
Todd Elton is entering his fourth year on the list and playing in the ruck is an option for the 197cm tall, who has worked on becoming more competitive.
Meanwhile, project player Ivan Soldo, a cousin of Maric, has made giant strides this summer. Soldo is learning the game as a category B rookie after representing the ACT in basketball.

Ruckin' role: How your club's big-man stocks are shaping up for 2015
Never really told us how they are shaping up for 2015 just dribbled on about who plays ruck
-
our ruck stocks need a certain player to step up and do a lot of the basic and simple things a lot better for our ruck stocks to rise.
Hampson is more than servicable at the ruck contest. its the total lack of anything else that kills him and us.
to me he needs to get to an acceptable level in three or four areas.
he needs to have 2nd and 3rd efforts when the ball hits the ground he needs to throw his weight around at stoppages. probably more than anything he has to start crashing packs and perform the most basic of skills of hanging onto his marks ffs.
he needs to be able to go fwd and kick the odd goal and make the most of his opportunities.no more horrid shanks or failing to make the distance.
ffs he can no longer be a spectator he must run and work harder than his opponents. he must not allow his direct opponents to just waltz fwd and kick goals. ffs get fit.
none of this is out of the ordinary its the basics and what should be the norm, it aint asking much.

Agree. An article devoid of analysis.

I actually think our ruck stocks are in reasonable shape. Be even better if Soldo comes on as hoped.

Hmm let's see....pretty sure Elton's being groomed mainly as a KPD now.
McBean's barely played in the ruck thus far and is probably still a few years off having the build for the role - if ever.
Club seems to want Vickery to just be a forward now...either way, his ruck work has gone backwards and it was never that great at AFL level to start with...
Stephenson's gone and hasn't been replaced with a similarly eperienced or at least specialist ruck who was brought up playing the game.
Soldo's likely years away if he indeed makes ot at all....which leaves:
An aging Maric, the half-descent tap-ruckman but completely useless to the point of being a liabilty around the ground Hamspud and Griffiths who only started rucking regularly last year.
But apart from that, yeah, reasonable shape.....
-
We are stuffed if Ivan goes down. Hoping he's fit for the entire season :pray

well summed up sir if anything our ruck stocks are diabolical.
we can forget vickery griffiths ever becoming top line ruckmen. soldo a feel good story is a long term project that is more likely to fail than succeed.
you rightly point out mcbean wont be playing riuck anytime soon and has never played there.
the thing we have to pray for is hampson can improve some basic areas of his game and stop spudding it up. he is a decent tap ruckman.
its funny he was bought to the club primarily for two reasons
1/ to give ivan a decent chop out thru games and we dont lose too much when ivan rests. he was also recruited to take on the leaping ruckmen which ivan has had trouble with.
2/ to play the ruck/fwd role to free up vickery to play exclusively fwd. griffiths has taken this role.
as i keep on saying we have a lot of really tall blokes who are ave at best in which ever role it is we ask em to perform. time to find a stand out ruckman to replace ivan and we sure as hell need a stand out kpf to partner riewoldt.

Doesn't look too good when Hampson, Maric, griff are out together
-
Yep we're down to:
1. Vickery
2. McBean
?
3. Soldo if elevated
-
Astbury / Mckenzie
But you wouldn't wanna break Astbury in the ruck. Unless we are going to delist him or he is going to join the police force.
What is McBean now 60kgs? Would worry about him vs a real ruckman

Soldo or Chol
between the two of them one should come good :pray
Griff and tyrone are options too as they are looking less valuable as key forwards by the day
-
Glad we got Choi and Moore can play ruck too apparently...but our ready to go ruck stocks are still woeful....
-
Building a team for a flag without ruck depth.
It's kind of like putting a band aid over a malignant Tumor
-
yeah, a little bit.....
-
Are our ruck stocks worse than Hawthorns?
-
Better to compare
To hawthorn during one the flag winning years.. Rather than 2016
-
When was the last team to win a Grand final with a really good ruckman?
-
When was the last team to win a Grand final with a really good ruckman?
Cats, Eagles, Hawks, Port, Lions.....
-
When was the last team to win a Grand final with a really good ruckman?
In the last 10 years I'd say Geelong and Sydney
-
Cox and west coast ?
-
Who was Hawks really good ruckman? Last team I remember was Cats when they had Ottens. Don't think Ports or Lions rucks were that good either

Exactly, not many. Not that we shouldn't try and find a good ruck but I wouldn't call it the be all end all
