ST KILDA has declared it can awaken a supporter base as big as Richmond’s.
Saints bosses fronted the AFL Commission on Monday to outline the club’s ambitious recovery plan.
Falling crowds, declining revenues and a spiralling debt of more than $9 million have placed the club in a precarious position.
But the rebuilding Saints say market research indicates they have a latent fan base comparable to Richmond, ready to be re-engaged.
The Tigers signed a record 66,122 members last season, compared to St Kilda’s 30,739 — the lowest of the Victorian clubs.
“This is not a small club and it’s important we don’t act like one,” Saints chief executive Matt Finnis said on Thursday.
“We’re an AFL foundation club with about the same number of supporters as Richmond, but they’re considered one of the ‘big’ clubs.
“But while we have a significant supporter base, that traditionally hasn’t transferred into memberships and crowds and we are determined to see that change.”
Finnis and Saints president Peter Summers spent an hour presenting to league supremos at AFL House on Monday.
They admitted a “significant disconnect” had developed between the club and its supporter base in recent years “underpinned by a sense of ill-discipline, poor decision making and drift”.
St Kilda’s commercial revenues were the lowest of the 18 clubs last season, behind both Greater Western Sydney and the Gold Coast, and football department expenditure slumped to 14th.
Operating losses nudged $4 million in 2014, while average attendances have fallen from 38,000 in 2010 when it made the Grand Final to 24,000 last year.
“The time of managing decline is over and we have a clear plan developed by our new executive team to see our great club start growing again,” Finnis said.
“We’ve been really open about the process of regeneration underway at St Kilda. It’s happening everywhere you look — in the playing ranks, among our coaches and commercially too.”
It is understood projections given to the commission showed the Saints aim to hit 55,000 members within three years.
“We need to bring our fans back to the club by showing them that we are making the right decisions, have good plans and people in place and — most of all — appreciate how important they are to us,” Finnis said.
“We see St Kilda as the people’s club and will be conducting ourselves that way.
“We have definitely burst the St Kilda ‘bubble’ and will pride ourselves on being an open, welcoming club.”
Relocation to the Junction Oval or Moorabbin is under consideration with a decision expected later in the year.

"But while we have a significant supporter base, that traditionally hasn’t transferred into memberships and crowds and we are determined to see that change.”
If they don't go and aren't members then how can they be supporters dhead?
-
This from a team that chalkenged for a flag a few short years ago. Dormant my ass, they're just minnow with no fans.
-
Nope thats just nuts
-
As delusional maybe....
-
Lol
'But they're considered one of the 'big' clubs'.
This a joke? Their average crowds were 24,000. That's what richmond is like when we play an interstate side and have no mathematical chance of making finals.
-
Last time we were wooden spooners, the average attendence for our matches was nearly 42,000 for the season - which was the third highest in the entire league that year.
-
And Nasa is going to take us all on a ride on the space shuttle to the moon
-
Double Typo
St Kilda is as bad as Richmond: Finnis .... (Herald-Sun)
-
That actually made me laugh out loud, that's for the morning funny finnis.
Feel in a better mood already :rollin
-
Saints have a good supporter base ,however not even remotely close to ours
-
ummmmmmm NO ...
-
He talks more rubbish than Hockey and Abbot combined
-
They would have to be in the conversation as one of the world's most unsuccessful professional sporting teams.

Right.
And how does Richmond stack up statistically over the last 30 years?
Worse..lmao
-
All I know is whining never inspired anything but contempt
-
Saints have a good supporter base
Rubbish. The dees have more supporters and crowds when they're actually winning are similar to the cats

Big picture though Ox, 27 wooden spoons and 1 flag.
They have more than double the number of last placings of the next team.
Would have to be amongst the worst records for pro teams worldwide.
-
Lol about as much substance as some of the bs sprouted around here , let's see, how many 60k + HA crowds in last 10 years, and 30, 000 + less members and he draws that conclusion.....I'm sure he went up in the afl ceo estimation after that preso :lol
-
I always lmao at getting into peeing contests with fellow failure clubs over who has the biggest supporter base or similar irrelevant tripe.
it's like getting excited because you can pee higher up a tree than your missus
-

Not sure about that, seems to encourage more whining on this forum..,
-
it is a stuffing fine art. I have never seen such innovation in finding new ways to whine about the same things either, it is impressive although oppressive.
-
How can a team like StKilda compare theirs to ours when they are suffering from a persistent case of Brewers droop. ;D
-
There is a lot of ice getting around these days
-
They do have more players charged with rape and sexual offences than us tho.
-
and that's a fact ^
-
can't argue with that
-
Not to mention photographs of senior players naked together on holidays.
-
why wouldn't you want to be part of that? lol
-
That's what they said. :police: ;D
