Post by: one-eyed on March 10, 2015, 01:11:12 PM
Lids ranked 49th by his peers.

The top 50 AFL players, as ranked by the players themselves: 50-41
afl.com.au
March 10, 2015

FOR THE second year, in conjunction with the AFL Players' Association, we've surveyed the AFL players to find out who they think make up the game's top 50.

Players from all 18 clubs took part in the survey, with 105 players receiving at least one vote.

There are 14 players in this year's players' top 50 who did not feature in last season's list. Three of those retired last year (Dean Cox, Darren Glass and Lenny Hayes).

Fourteen of the top 20 players on the list are from last year's finalists.

We start with players 50-41, with the countdown continuing until Friday, March 27, when the AFL's No.1 player – according to his peers – is revealed.

50. Steele Sidebottom

49. Brett Deledio
Richmond
Forward/midfielder
Last year's ranking: 30 (-19)
Official AFL Player Rating: 54
Debut: 2005
Games: 214
NAB AFL Fantasy value: $548,000

The 27-year-old spent more time forward last season and finished first for the Tigers in scoring involvements and second in scoreboard impact from round 12 onwards. Fitness staff have managed the vice-captain carefully during pre-season to avoid flaring up an Achilles problem that cost him four games at the start of last year, but he is expected to be ready to go in round one. Kicked 20 goals and was involved in 33 per cent of Richmond's scores last season. Will likely again be used in a forward role, with coaches knowing he can make life difficult for opponents.

48. Dane Swan
47. Travis Cloke
46. Luke Bruest
45. Matthew Pavlich
44. Ryan Griffen
43. Josh Kennedy (WCE)
42. Jimmy Bartel
41. Shaun Burgoyne

40. Dan Hannebery

39. Dustin Martin
Richmond
Forward/midfielder
Last year's ranking: -
Official AFL Player Rating: 88
Debut: 2010
Games: 108
NAB AFL Fantasy value: $553,000

The Tiger cracks the Players' Top 50 for the first time after playing consistently well in 2014 and finishing third in Richmond's best and fairest. Was one of the Tigers' most important players – and a genuine match-winner in the second half of the year. Was a force in contested situations and used that skill to his advantage when he pushed forward late in games late in the season and exploited his opponents with his strength. Recently signed a new contract and is set for more midfield minutes in 2015, although he’ll still be used in attack when needed.

38. Cyril Rioli
37. Pearce Hanley
36. Chad Wingard
35. Jarrad McVeigh
34. Brendon Goddard
33. David Mundy
32. Bryce Gibbs
31. Nathan Jones

How is that negative? I'm just bagging out this top 50 for having Dusty so high.. Did I see he shouldn't be in the top 50? Don't put words in my mouth.

With what you say I agree, some players very overrated and some very underrated.
I think that is with life all together.
Again Phil apologies!!

Cotch rated at 13 by his peers.

20. Aaron Sandilands
19. Tom Rockliff
18. Sam Mitchell
17. Steve Johnson
16. Nick Riewoldt
15. Dyson Heppell
14. Matt Priddis

13. Trent Cotchin
Richmond
Midfielder
Last year's ranking: 9 (-4)
Official AFL Player Rating: 70
Debut: 2008
Games: 131
NAB AFL Fantasy value: $571,000

Cotchin spent more time in the forward line last season, when he played every game and won his third club best and fairest award. Is sometimes criticised for his tendency to kick short but topped the Tigers in contested possessions and clearances in 2014, and led strongly when the team needed him the most. His leadership has been another point of discussion but in his second year as captain he was more vocal and more demonstrative with his teammates. Ignored the lure of free agency by recently signing a five-year extension.

12. Jobe Watson
11. Josh Kennedy (Swans)

I'd have Nick Riewoldt higher than Franklin. The guy hasn't had good midfield delivery since 2011 and he still kicks close to 50 goals a year and has to play further up the field to keep his team competitive.

Lance Franklin has had delivery from Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell for most of his career and now he has delivery from an elite Sydney midfield unit.

But that aside the real crime of this list is that Cyril Rioli was #38 (ahead of Dusty and Lids) and the guy only played 12 games.
And of course Cloke's inclusion when he only kicked 39 goals last year?
