Why do some footy clubs go through one good year then one bad year?
Not all clubs do but some like Melbourne under Daniher and now Norf under Scott are looking like going through a good year bad year regime. I do realise this is an early call on Norf, the first 4 rounds are notoriously difficult to predict.
Anybody have an idea why? Not enough money? Do they not have enough depth so their off season after a good year is too short and some of their good players don't get a pre season and they fail next year. They both appear to be good coaches but maybe their medical and off field spend is too little?
Thoughts?

Immediate success for clubs like Melb under Daniher coming out of merger talks or North post Carey and Pagan is what lifts their bottom line. But for success to be longlasting and nurtured further from previous seasons you need to spend more and more money in subsequent seasons.
Otherwise clubs who have lots of money Interstate clubs, Collingwood Hawthorn will outbid you in the trade/draft free agency market and outspend you in the footy department and ultimately that's where Premiership campaigns are either ignited or just grey ashes blowing in the wind.
I think North may think they were closer to a flag than their Prelim may have indicated much like us post 2001. Topped up with blokes like Waite, Higgins etc and got beaten badly yesterday.
Time will tell if the Richmond 2001 analogy can be made with them. I hope so.
So you can also have coaches, admins within a club selling snake oil to the media, fans and greater footy community to promote a positive environment ready to take the next step only for it to fall flat on their face due to on off and on field issues.
I must say it is only round 1. ;D

12th 9th 16th 9th 15th
Our 12th in 05 was better than our 9th in 06.
We would have made finals in 05 had Browny not broken his leg yet in our 9th in 06 we lost two of our first 7 by 20 goals and had another 100+ loss to St Kilda late in the year added to a 88 point loss to West Coast at the G in Rd 22.
After 2008 locked and loaded.....
We never had success under Wallet plain and simple.
Minimum criteria of success is finals appearances and we didn't trouble the scorers under Wallet.
We were skata for the best part of 5 years bar the first dozen or so games of that tenure.

Is our 12th without Browny a sign of a lack of depth in the list?
Is it really a sign of poor recruiting?
