AFL, MCG aware of Richmond station issue

BOTH the AFL and the MCG are aware of delays at Richmond train station for football fans after matches but believe there is not a significant issue at present.
Public Transport Victoria decided to close the Myki gates at Richmond station last year to help counter fare evasion, overcrowding on platforms and regulate patrons entering the station following matches at the MCG.
But social media lit up last Thursday night with angry fans frustrated at queues and delays at the station following the conclusion of the Richmond-Carlton clash at the MCG where 83,000 fans were in attendance.
The League's general manager of clubs and AFL operations Travis Auld said the AFL was aware of the situation and had been in contact with the MCG about it.
"We're aware that Metro Trains have changed their processes around having to scan your card as you exit into the train station on the way out from a game," Auld said.
"That's something we've spoken to the MCG about. They're aware of it and they're going to monitor it.
"Their view is that it didn't cause any significant issues on Thursday night but they're certainly, as we are, really mindful that they want to make it as easy for supporters to get in and out of the stadium as they can.
"We'll continue to talk to the MCG and no doubt they'll talk to their stakeholders to make sure it doesn't become an issue."

Is Richmond not in the free zone?

The free zone is for tram travel within the CBD IIRC. In any case, Richmond isn't in the free zone.
The problem is Richmond station wasn't designed for ticket gates. The entry/exit points are too narrow. The station is old anyway and for such a busy 10-platform station, where people interchange between trains from different lines, it needs a total revamp to bring it into the 21st century.
