Investigation into claims fans made homophobic, racist remarks at MCG
Herald-Sun
April 12, 2015 3:29PM
UPDATE: FAN behaviour at the MCG is under the spotlight after two separate incidents during the Bulldogs and Tigers clash.
A Western Bulldogs cheer squad member was reported to Victoria Police for a homophobic remark yesterday.
The club was considering whether to revoke the supporter’s membership today.
There were also claims that a Tigers fan had made a racist remark about Bulldogs player Lin Jong, but police could not confirm that case.
The Melbourne Cricket Club with police have confirmed that the Bulldogs spectator was immediately evicted from the ground and their details have now been passed on to the AFL for assessment.
MCC spokesman, Shane Brown said: “We can confirm a patron was removed from the grounds after making a homophobic remark.”
Western Bulldogs Coach, Shane Beveridge was unaware of the circumstances surrounding the incident also but remained adamant that the game would not tolerate vilifying abuse of any kind.
“I am aware of it. I don’t know any detail. We know homophonies and racists, there is no place for them in society,” he said.
“Anything that happened, we don’t condone it, but I just don’t know the detail.”
Mr Brown said he was aware of a complaint about racism but did not know the details.
Jong was born in Melbourne to a Taiwanese mother and East Timorese father.
AFL spokesman, Patrick Keane said grounds staff and Victoria Police were unable to “definitively establish” what had occurred in the alleged racist attack.
Mr Brown added: “All we know is that there was complaint made by a patron about a racial remark being made by another patron.”
Western Bulldogs defeated Richmond by 19 points in the second round game at the MCG.

Allegations that a Richmond supporter racially abused Western Bulldogs player Lin Jong, during last Saturday’s match at the MCG, were brought to the Club's attention today.
The Club subsequently followed up the complaint with the MCC.
The Club was advised that police had followed up the complaint, but could not substantiate the allegation, and no further action was taken.
"As a Club, we take any suggestion of racist behaviour very seriously, and we followed it up accordingly," said Richmond CEO Brendon Gale.
"While no action was taken in this case, it is a reminder that any such behaviour is totally unacceptable and as a Club we will not tolerate it.
"Lin Jong is a fine young player and we should be celebrating the diversity he brings to our game."
The Club can also confirm that a Richmond player sought out security and identified a supporter making homophobic remarks during the game.
Victoria Police and security attended, and the person was subsequently removed from the venue.

Calling someone a slopehead is wrong. Especially when children can hear it and then they think that it is normal to go to the footy and do the same.

It is but if that's a concern don't take your kids out of the house.
The main worry is the parents are deluded.
