Top Tiger in doubt for Collingwood clash

RICHMOND star midfielder Brett Deledio is no certainty to play against Collingwood on Sunday, coach Damien Hardwick says.
Deledio returned to the Tigers' line-up against North Melbourne in Hobart last weekend for his first match since the season opener against Carlton. He managed around 70 minutes of game time.
The dual best-and-fairest winner has been battling a lingering calf complaint, aggravated in round one against the Blues, and Hardwick described him as a week-by-week proposition.
"He's pulled up OK. We'll see how he goes through training today (Thursday) and hopefully he can play a full game this week," Hardwick said.
"The fact of the matter is that he's got an injury that at various stages we're not quite sure of the consistency of how it pulls up after every game which is frustrating from Brett's point of view and ours.
"We've got to take it on a week-by-week basis at this stage.
"The doctors once again will make the final call with Brett."

Brett Deledio is in doubt for Sunday’s clash against Collingwood and needs to be managed week-to-week
Rebecca Williams
Herald Sun
May 14, 2015 9:09AM
RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has admitted to some doubt over the availability of Brett Deledio for Sunday’s clash against Collingwood, saying the club will have to make a call on his fitness on a “week-to-week” basis.
Deledio played his first game since Round 1 in last week’s loss to North Melbourne in Hobart after overcoming a calf injury.
Hardwick said today the Tigers would wait to see how he got through today’s training session before deciding if he would back up.
“We’re not sure (if he’ll play), we have got to train today and see how that goes,’’ Hardwick said.
“We’ll see how he trains and then we’ll work our way through it.
“He was only scheduled to play 70 minutes, I think he might have played a bit more because obviously the injury concerns that we had.
“It’s not so much the game time, it’s the fact that he has got an injury at various stages that we’re not quite sure about the consistency of how it pulls up after every game.
“Which is frustrating from Brett’s point of view and ours because he is obviously a very important player.
“We just have to take it on a week-to-week basis at this stage.’’
The doubts over Deledio came as the Tigers also await news on the availability of key forward Ben Griffiths, who was concussed against the Kangaroos.
Hardwick was hopeful Griffiths would be cleared to play, but said he still needed to undergo his concussion testing.
He added the club would likely select him and make a final call on Saturday.
“He will obviously have his concussion test at some stage, he will train today and we’ll see how he is,’’ Hardwick said.
“It was a pretty solid knock. That’s in the doctor’s hands, we don’t make that call. We’ll abide by the doc’s decision.
“We have got the eight-day break so from that point of view we will probably name him in the side and we will go from there. We have got until Saturday to make that call.
“He is an important player to us, he was in really good form up until that injury. It probably muddled our forward line as such, but he is having a really good year.’’
Hardwick said Chris Newman was only a “50-50” chance to take on the Magpies after hurting his hip flexor.
After taking aim at the club’s forward line last week for “not getting the job done’, Hardwick said Ty Vickery had put his hand up for selection after encouraging form in the VFL.
“He played pretty well at VFL level last week and he has certainly put his hand up to play again,’’ Hardwick said.
“He was probably unlucky in regards to selection last week, we felt we need some coverage down back if North’s key forwards got out of hand so we played Dave Astbury in front of him in that situation.
“He’ll come up for selection today.’’
Dustin Martin was one player Hardwick singled out for criticism after last week’s 35-point loss, but the coach admitted today he had been harsh on him.
“I think I was probably unfair on Dustin, he made one blue with the ball and he had a pretty good game other than that,’’ Hardwick said.
“He played on (Ben) Cunnington and I thought he beat Cunnigton pretty well. I think Cunnington had 17 possessions, Dusty had 30.
“It was probably unfair to single out Dusty in that bit of play. Unfortunately as a coach we do some strange things when we have a loss.’’
Hardwick said Reece Conca would make a return in the VFL this weekend.

what is going on with Lids,
I recall this time last season the rumour was it was a chronic or degenerative achilles problem that would need to be managed for the rest of his career. This was quickly rubbished by RFCO from memory, is there any truth to the rumours?
-
you just know he is going to bring back Vickery...this tosser never learns
when asked if he doubts himself as a coach he should have just been honest and said ....YES all the freaken time!
feel so sorry for our club

28 and stsrting to get injuries....trade while we can still get something good for him.......

Newman 50/50 :banghead Should not even be considered, a weekly passenger who should have been long gone. Unless Hardwick actually makes the hard calls he is dead man walking as far as i am concerned. We all know the changes this week will be the usual ins and outs with his favourites getting yet another opportunity when the younger guys have one week and then out again.

just rest him until he's 100%. if we cant win games because of 1 player then we are in big trouble.

So they did it again...........and it backfired.
A comedy of errors at the football level.

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick insists the Tigers are a “lot closer than people think”, claiming consistency is the biggest issue hurting his team.
The Tigers slumped to a 2-4 record after last week’s 35-point loss to North Melbourne and face another big clash against the third-placed Magpies at the MCG on Sunday.
Despite a tough month ahead, Hardwick said there was no panic internally.
“We know we are not as far away as what a lot of other people think,’’ Hardwick said.
“There is a lot of areas we are doing well, the consistency of performance is what is hurting us at the moment.
“The 15 minutes of poor footy on the weekend in the third quarter cost us seven goals. We only had nine entries inside 50, but we gave up seven goals because of our ball use.
“We are a lot closer than people think.’’
Hardwick said the team’s intensity in training had “been terrific”, but the Tigers needed to find a way to eradicate lapses in games.
“We have won a lot of quarters of footy but unfortunately one quarter or a period of 15 minutes or 10 minutes has let us down and that’s what is costing us games at the moment,’’ he said.
“The consistency of performance is what drives you up the ladder and that’s what we have got to work on.’’
Hardwick took aim at the club’s forward line for “not getting the job done” after the loss to the Kangaroos and also singled out Dustin Martin for criticism.
But Hardwick yesterday admitted he had been harsh on Martin for his third-quarter blunders.

they are consistent already...
consistently crap

Dimma is surely kidding himself because playing like that we are miles off :banghead
-
Tell me why does our club have a need to let everyone outside the club know who will be playing & who won't be playing on game day several days before the game. How bout the club leave a few surprises to the very last moment. Did hardwick not learn anything from Kevin Sheedy :huh

arnott has earnt games

It's probably my fave of the week

Have to say Ox like it or not it was indeed 20 minutes of insipid, uncompetitive footy that cost us the game last week in Hobart. I was there, saw it and there is no disputing it
And there is plenty of evidence in all our other games that there have been 15-20 minute lapses that have been crucial in the end result.
It seems to me that we when have those lapses and then we are not either mentally tough enough or mentally switched on enough to fight back from it (probably both TBBH). Will say it again that's when our lack of leadership stands out more than anything
So I would suggest to our coaching department instead of stating the bleeding obvious. They actually do something about our lack of leadership and mental toughness during every game (even games we win I might add) and then perhaps instead of being close we might actually get somewhere.
-
Sure but the whole game style is insipid not just a rubbish 5-20 minute period.
Wasn't it 15 minutes before? Seems to have become 20.
That's basically one whole quarter.
He says they've been doing it all year
He's a stuffwit.
Admit it.
-
Not sure if Dimma gets this but games go for 4 quarters. If you play a bad quarter and lose the game, you've played a poor game.

Not disputing your point, just think these 15-20 minute lapses are a massive problem. They are the icing on the putrid game style cake if you like
-
Well, that goes without saying, tiger. Lmao

Exactly what it is.
-
It is putrid. That's a good word to describe it.
If I can open up for a moment, I really don't like it. It's not necessary and it's not effective.
-
The weekly routine is all becoming a bit blah. We lose, we try to explain why we lost even though it's obvious to everyone, we say a lot of warm and fuzzy things about lifting our game, drawing lines in the sand and other cliches we can find.. we lose again. It's become so predictable you could almost be locked away from the world for a week, come back and still know what happened without having read a single thread on this forum, football is so boring at the minute :sleep
-

Saddest thing is that when they play the other game style, the fast run and carry through the corridor which we usually get fleeting glimpses of each week in short blink and you will miss it bursrt we actually look good. It's a good style but right now it like Ty Vickery; a cameo king
-

It's all about media repsonsibilities that the club have
Best thing is to just ignore it as you know it's all crap blah crap

And a lot of the time it gets ruined by a dinky 1 meter handball :banghead
-
one metre handball???most are far shorter than that
-
the difference between when we look good and when we dont is not anything we do ( not so much anyway) but more to do with what the opposition do. we are still playing pretty much the same way.
those dinky dangerous handballs are still there, but the pressure from the opposition isnt.
I watch with my heart in my mouths at times, about to explode in a tirade of expleteives as i see a series of these handballs... and it actually comes off, but often then only just, but it creates run and breaks the lines. Soon enough though, if the oppostion can keep the pressure on the cracks appear, turnovers happen, the players start to doubt and panic, then it just deteriorates into a god almighty rabble.

Surely you teach, drill, inspire build confidence into the way you play which makes it repeatable. Doing it for 100 minutes or 80 minutes - particularly when on field leaders go missing - is also a coaching thing. 6 years to teach players to concentrate for 100 minutes. Surely a KPI of the coach? Finally, Al while I agree with your point on pressure when our players are executing the game plan properly and don't go missing for 20 minutes we've beaten or pushed the best pressure team in the AFL / Freo a number of times.
-
Interestingly Clarko talked about consistency of effort last night - not being a "sometimes team". He's a coach that has a hugely talented team and demands 100% in the application of that talent. There is no way he'd play a Tyrone Vickery given this kids a repeat offender in the "lack of application" department.
Yet a coach in his 6th year compromises a basic standard in hope.....
-
half the problem HRT is the development of these players. Clarkson would have a different vickery than we have and his old man wouldn't be on the payroll
