Cricket gives AFL green light to stage Easter blockbusters at MCG

  Caroline Wilson

    July 24, 2015

The  AFL will open the 2016 season over the Easter long weekend at the MCG after all with Richmond to play host to Carlton on Thursday, March 24.

Cricket Australia on Thursday gave football the green light to fixture its now traditional MCG Easter blockbusters over the weekend of the Sheffield Shield final. CA chief James Sutherland returned to Melbourne following the Lord's Test and immediately delivered that message to AFL boss Gillon McLachlan.

The green light was given in the understanding of a pending long term agreement which would allow the AFL permanent access to the MCG each year for an extra weekend in March. The deal is yet to be reached but will involve a multimillion dollar financial settlement between the AFL and Cricket Australia.

Fairfax Media understands a tripartite agreement between the AFL, the MCC and Cricket Australia will ensure football wins long-term tenancy of the MCG for the last two weekends of March from 2016.

Funny how this game becomes very important after what the Coach and Captain are saying so far about next year...particularly Cotch about his crap game on Sunday.

So for all the smart arse comments about lines in the sand and must win games, well you know what.....it is!!!!

With the current list and coach - THE WINDOW HAS CLOSED.

do u honestly believe, guys, that they're going to "get it together" in 2016 ?

There's too many people scared to tarnish their already ridiculed reputation by cutting certain players, as it would seem an indictment on their alleged professional scope.

They'd be seeing an injury prone Kreuzer as the answer, rather than blatantly steal a top three ruckman. It's easier that way and they can continue to be a happy little pack of arse licking narcissists.

I'm so desperate for new talent that I'm now backing the inclusion of Yarran and Bennell.
The existing problem however is that we have Conca being gifted games, Ellis, who is nothing more than a slightly better Grigg, and that's only at times, Grigg, Chaplin .....all accepted as in our best 22.

Does anyone watch Hardknocks an 7 mate?
It's about the process of the NFL pre season and the professional environment they set and achieve.

Our pack of overpaid Christians, Muslims and poofters have got it so easy, it makes me wanna kick the idiot out of all of them.

Ellis was and is in our best 22. Compare him to Arnot or other fringe players. He runs all day and gets to lots of contests so buggered he kicks crap. As opposed to Lloyd or Arnot who get to 15 contests a game and get 12 possies and still kick crap. Lambast the crap players, once Ellis becomes number 22 then lambast him but he clearly in our best 20 possibly best 12.

No excuse to kick crap, even if you're tired. They train to kick tired. If that is his serious issue, I'd rather he slow down a little so he could actually hit a target. I thought he was meant to be a good kick :huh

Season 2015

GA adult is about $20

Family GA (2adults & 2 kids) about $50

Not sure about kids prices

For reserved seats add about $30-35 for the best (premium) and about $10-15 for the not so good

Yeah I agree with you all the way Phil, if we are going to lose in the first round (which has always been one of my biggest phobias [from 1981 to 2015 only 11 first round wins - which is crap for 35 friggin years]), I'd rather lose to a big club not pissy little club like carlton. But if we win against a big club then ya set up the next month or so with a mountain of confidence.
