Jack Riewoldt’s outstanding form has made his teammates better, says Richmond coach Damien Hardwick

JACK Riewoldt has “grown up” as a player and person and his team-first approach has made the Tigers a better team, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says.

Riewoldt has been in outstanding form this season with 39 goals despite spending more time up the ground.

He is taking fewer marks inside 50 but is still avergaing 6.9 a games.

“The performance of Jack this year, you’ve seen him grow as a player,” Hardwick told Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

“Not only we’ve seen him being able to play predominatly as a full-forward but his ability to get up the ground and make his teammates better.

“I still maintain the mark of a great player is how good you make those around you, and I think Jack has improved enormously in that area. His goal assists, score assists, all those types of statistics we can wheel out, he makes us better by making those around him better.”

Riewoldt, who recently signed a three-year contract extension, said playing for team was behind his good form this season.

“Something I’ve been focusing on just playing a role for the side and that’s led to me playing some pretty good footy individually,” Riewoldt said earlier this month.

“If it leads to me playing good (football) or if it leads to me playing more of a selfless role and exploiting other options up forward or through the half-forward line then that’s what I’ll do.”

Hardwick said Riewoldt had improved as a leader since being omitted from the leadership group before the start of the 2014 season.

“It’s amazing how he’s grown as a leader from that,” Hardwick said.

“The feedback he got at various stages about what he had to improve on, he’s taken on board.

“He’s grown up. It takes some guys a little longer than others and Jack’s certainly found his way at our footy club and his way of life."
