Horrible decision by Houli there but I'm not going to blame it all on him. We had our chances and I though he did a great job of tipping a contest back in our favour on the boundary just before. I think that lead to the inside 50 where I think it was Ibbotson was caught cold and dropped the ball and we got nada.

It is all part of the AFL rubbish, they want to ensure poor lil old perennial chokers Freo get a home final.  I don't trust the umpiring or the organisation any more than FIFA, more like World Wrestling Federation now, scripted drama.

Don't normally take what the Ch.7 flogs say seriously but during the Port-Essendon match they were floating the idea of the AFL awarding a bonus point to sides for scoring 100 points - not a bad suggestion IMO, rather that than yet more stuffing around with the rules of the game itself.

That one the most costly due to the time of the game.

If the water spray was a 50m penalty for high contact (as I understand the umpire called it), why wasn't it reported?

Conduct:- intentional
Contact:- High
Impact:- Low

the message here is if you are going to do something do it properly.

Martin may as well grabbed the prick and threw into the ground as hard as he could.

seriously, WTF has become of the game? they actually encourage snipping and getting in your opponents face.

A for the holding free to pavelich.

one camera angle clearly shows pavelich with a handful of rances jumper. the umpires are supposed to pay a free the moment they see that.

the other camera angle shows the umpire in the perfect position to have seen this.

so how the hell does he pay pavelich the free?

i cant believe that an umpire at this level could be so incompetent, so is he a cheat?

all part of the script, Freo are allowed to play 'tough finals like footy'  to prepare them for their home final.  FIFA doesn't like it when we rough up their chosen team for the year.

I'm so glad I didn't watch that game with you yesterday Al, there would have been a smashed TV for sure.  Without a doubt that was the worst umpired game we have suffered all year and for the first time it directly cost us a win.  Forget about all the moments we had our own destiny in our hands and botched the shots at goal, the truth of it all is that we got screwed for 4 quarters yesterday and that was all that kept those purple pr1ck5 in the game.  Our missed shots and posters should have meant the difference between a 3 goal win and a 6 goal win because we smashed them in general play.  And there was one of the maggots especially (# 20 I think it was - 20 something anyway) who was diabolical in his bent against us.  Took me a long long time to calm down last night!!!!!!!!  :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown

Worst umpiring of the year.

Possibly of the last 5 years at least. Struggling to remember a more baffling, inconsistent and pro - opposition adjudication of a game.

Did smasha hijack everyone's accounts here? Considering the potential crowd for next week v Hawthorn had we won, if anything the AFL would've more inclined to conspire with umpires for a result in our favour.

In all this talk about the 'legality' or otherwise of the heinous offence of water-splashing, no-one has mentioned that the purple grub had hold of the arm Dusty was holding the bottle in at the time of the splashing.  What rights does the player have when the opposition player is physically restraining him from having a drink?  And have a look at how the flouro maggot would have seen that:

It doesn't look like a free or 50m penalty was paid either  ::).

Apparently, Dusty was penalised under the "spirit and intention of awarding free kicks" clause in the AFL rules.

15.1.1 Spirit and Intention of Awarding Free Kicks
It is the spirit and intention of these Laws that a Free Kick shall
be awarded to:
(a) ensure that a Match is played in a fair manner;

15.10.1 When Awarded
A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player or a Team where the field
Umpire is of the opinion that:
(f) a Player has engaged in misconduct.

16.7 FURTHER BREACH OF LAWS BEFORE DISPOSAL
(b) Where a Field Umpire has awarded a Free Kick or a Mark to a Player
and before disposing of the football a Player from the opposition Team
engages in conduct for which a Free Kick would ordinarily be awarded,
then the resultant Free Kick shall be taken where the offence occurred, or
a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall be awarded
to the Player with the original Free
Kick or Mark, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team.

Nah, it's alright to play "unsocial football" where you punch an unaware young opponent in the guts off the ball (Josh Gisbon) or stick a raised knee into an opponent's thigh that leaves them injured with a corky (Sam Mitchell twice). However, squirt an opponent with a bit a water and the ump does this --> :scared.

The umpiring was substandard but so was our kicks at goal. Using bad umpiring as an excuse for losing is not taking responsibility for mediocrity.

Yep, and compare that to some of the other free kicks for holding the ball and you're left scratching your head. Pretty sure that is THE perfect example of where they wanted to have a stricter interpretation of holding the ball

Umpires boss admits to free kick 'hiccup'

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
July 27, 2015 1:09 PM

AFL UMPIRES boss Wayne Campbell was surprised at the "spike" in free kicks on the weekend and admits the League's officials went overboard on advice to look for more infringements.

There was an average of 46.2 free kicks paid in the nine games in round 17, up by 10 from the previous round.

The umpires had been coached last week to look for infringements in marking contests, pushes in the back and 50m penalties, but Campbell said some miscommunication had seen the umpires take things further in what he called "a hiccup".

"We've been coaching the last couple of weeks to try to find two or three missed free kicks," he said on Monday.

"We certainly didn't expect the spike that occurred on the weekend. We didn't want it to go from the number it was to the number it got to in the end."

Clubs have already complained to the umpires' department about the over-officiating across the round, and Campbell said the AFL would have informed the clubs of a change in umpiring mentality had it been aware it would be so significant.

"We'd like to think that since [umpires coach] Hayden (Kennedy) and I started we've been very transparent with clubs, and any time we've made any sort of adjustment no matter how subtle it was, we've actually told them," Campbell said.

"On the weekend we saw it umpired a little differently to what it was the previous week and we weren't expecting that spike.

"It was a little surprise to us as well, and so therefore we weren't able to tell the clubs because we didn't see the spike coming."

Free kicks are slightly up on last year overall, with an average of 36 paid each game in 2015 compared to 33.4 last season.

The significant jump across round 17 attracted criticism and brought confusion, but Campbell said there had been no instruction to pay more free kicks to encourage a more free-flowing game style.

"Clearly if you pay more free kicks it opens the game up, but there's been no direction from anywhere that we have to pay a certain amount of free kicks or we have to pay more free kicks," he said.

"We as an umpiring department thought that we were missing two or three free kicks and we want to be consistent and get to that level where the public know what is a free kick and what's not."

Campbell supported the decision to award a free kick against Richmond star Dustin Martin for spraying water on a Fremantle opponent, but acknowledged the uncertainty around the rules for ruck contests after several puzzling frees were paid over the weekend.

"In general the philosophy is that we want both rucks to be able to get an even chance at the ball. And secondly, it's not an easy area to adjudicate especially around the ground with third-man up and things like that," Campbell said.
