Match preview: Tigers v Suns
Ben Guthrie
afl.com.au
August 11, 2015
SUMMARY
The Tigers and Suns will face off at the MCG for the first time on Sunday. Richmond is well and truly in the finals hunt, while September action is out of the question for Gold Coast but this clash could be closer than the sides' ladder positions suggest. Led by Tom Lynch, Gold Coast's forward line has fired of late and the Tigers will face stiff competition. Richmond has struggled in front of the big sticks, booting 10 goals or less in five of its six games since round 14. However, the Tigers' class, led by Dustin Martin and Brett Deledio, who is a likely inclusion from illness, should help them get over the line.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday 1.10pm AEST
LAST FOUR TIMES
R1, 2014, Gold Coast 12.15 (87) d Richmond 10.9 (69) at Metricon Stadium
R16, 2013, Richmond 6.17 (53) d Gold Coast 6.8 (44) at Cazalys Stadium
R16, 2012, Gold Coast 13.12 (90) d Richmond 13.10 (88) at Cazalys Stadium
R17, 2011, Gold Coast 12.13 (85) d Richmond 9.16 (70) at Cazalys Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Gold Coast averages less disposals than any other side (323.3 per game). The Tigers are only marginally better, ranked 14th with 355.8 disposals per game.
2. This is the fourth meeting between the sides with Gold Coast holding a clear advantage winning three games, as well as two wins in Cairns at Cazalys Stadium.
3. Since round 14, the Tigers have kicked 10 goals or less in five of six games.
4. This match will mark the first time the Suns have played Richmond at the MCG.
5. The Suns average less marks inside 50 than any other side (9.3 per game). Richmond is eighth with 12.3 per game.
6. Gold Coast's Aaron Hall was the fifth-highest scoring player in the Official AFL Player Ratings last weekend, notching 24.3 points in the game against the Brisbane Lions.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR… Trent Cotchin.
Cotchin and his leadership group have been questioned in the past for allowing these kinds of games to fall out of their grasp. The Tigers skipper queried reporters' questions during the week about the 'typical' Richmond style leading to inconsistent performances. Breaking free of that tag, and getting the job done against a team like the Suns, is important as the Tigers mount their finals tilt.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 25 points
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-08-11/match-preview-tigers-v-suns
-
Cotchin said it was exciting to play Gold Coast in Melbourne for the first time since the Suns' inception and described them as "quality opposition" despite the expansion club having registered only three wins and a draw after 19 rounds.
"They drew with West Coast who have obviously shown they have been one of the standouts for the season so far," Cotchin said.

If we lose this Hardwick should resign at the post match press conference.

Look, lets not work ourselves into a lather, but if we do end up actually losing we are in big big trouble. Big trouble.

Gold Coast expects Richmond to come out firing after loss
Greg Davis
The Courier-Mail
August 12, 2015 2:11PM
GOLD Coast defender Steve May says the Suns are braced for a ravenous Richmond — not timid Tigers — this Sunday at the MCG.
A week after dismantling reigning premiers Hawthorn in Round 18 to surge into flag contention, Richmond produced a listless and lacklustre effort to fall to Adelaide last Friday night.
May expects the Tigers to bounce back strongly and bare their claws with September just around the corner.
“I think they are going to be on high alert. They’ve got a chance to play finals,’’ May said.
“They’ve just had a tough loss to Adelaide so Sunday at the ’G, they are going to really want to put us away.
“We know they are not going to take us lightly.
“They play well at home at the MCG so there’s no secret we’ve got a big task ahead of us.’’
But the Suns will not be going through the motions. After a draw with second-placed West Coast in Round 18, the Suns accounted for Brisbane in last weekend’s QClash 10 after barely getting out of second gear.
The mood at Wednesday’s skills session at Metricon Stadium was decidedly upbeat and the Suns travel to the home of football with a spring in their step and hope of an upset.
“On ladder positions, it should be an easy win for them but as we know in the AFL, sometimes the bottom teams…,’’ he said.
“We took on West Coast and we drew with them.
“We’ve put up some good performance against West Coast and Adelaide for three quarters and Richmond is going to be no different.
“We are going to have to take it up to them for four quarters.’’
May expects to get the match-up with Tigers spearhead Jack Riewoldt and anticipates having his hands full.
“I assume I get Jack Riewoldt. He had a quiet game last week so that means he’s probably in for a big one this week,’’ May said.

Excited for selections tonight. Hopefully gaining 2 of our best 22 in Edwards and Deledio.
Hopefully play dea and give him his first chance this year.
Hopefully bring in mcbean for Hampson and go back to 3 talls.

We owe these boys a flogging.

Edwards won't be back. London to a brick Hamspud keeps his spot.
Can hear Hardwick now: "Oh look Liam was very close but unfortunately for him our VFL side's just come off a bye so he's probably still short of a run..."

Hot:
Dustin Martin was Richmond's best player last week against the Crows with 23.9 points - ranked second on the ground.
Tom Lynch has had the best four-week period of his career with 69.6 points in the past month - ranked fifth in the competition.
Not:
Trent Cotchin has averaged just 9.3 points against Gold Coast Suns - his worst against any club.
Kade Kolodjashnij has scored just 20.8 points in the past month - the lowest-scoring four-week block of his career.

We lose this and it's a disgrace
-
Will you be saying that after the match or will the other Dooks turn up again and tell everyone to "calm down" and "stop losing their heads" ?
-
Will you be saying that after the match or will the other Dooks turn up again and tell everyone to "calm down" and "stop losing their heads" ?
I'll be saying it's a disgrace on the basis of our team health and quality of opposition, amongst other factors.
You can do what you please and, if you like, continue to have no regard to season variables and a measured, considered perspective. Good luck and i forgive you.

Claiming you knew something all along only after it was made public doesn't count. :shh

I have mail that Matthew Thomas is named for this game

Lloyd to Vickery on 50m. He then passes it to Shaw without a Tiger in sight.
Sluggish start :P.
-
Kicking efficiency:
Rich 50%
GC 54%
:help
-
Miles towards Vickery but he is outnumbered 1-3. Does well to bring it to ground and Lids gahters and finds Jack 52m out. Goal :gotigers
Rich 6
GC 0
-
8 mins in and we haven't laid even one tackle :P.
Tackles: 0 - 6
-
Up to 1 team tackle ::).
Goal to the Suns :facepalm.
6 - 6
-
This is pathetic. Utter slop and so lackluster. Another great first quarter :scream.
We finally use the footy properly and hit a target. Lambert finds TV. Plays on and goals :gotigers.
Rich 12
GC 6
-
Lambert b.o.g. so far. 9 disposals, 1 assist and now snaps a goal himself :gotigers.
Rich 18
GC 6
-
Out of middle - Dusty to Cotch to Houli to Jack. Too far out. Hits up Lids who rises up and marks. Goal :gotigers.
That's better! Hopefully, we have finally woken up.
Rich 24
GC 6
-
We've still only had one tackle in 22 mins. Bruise free footy today.
-
At least we're kicking straight today.
Another goal - Houli out into space to Grigg on the run. Good finish :gotigers.
Rich 30
GC 6
-
Yep, bruise free footy today by both teams. No pressure whatsoever :facepalm.
Suns player out of the centre and goals :banghead.
30 - 12
-
Now us out of the centre. Lloyd crumbs but snaps a point.
31 - 12
Still just one tackle to us in 27 mins.
-
Thomas long and direct to a 2-on-2 and Vickery marks. 35m out. Goal :gotigers
Rich 37
GC 12
-
Quarter time
Richmond 6.1-37
Gold Coast 2.0-12
Goals: Vickery 2, Riewoldt, Lambert, Deledio, Grigg.
-
Lucky we are playing the Suns in their current state who aren't applying any pressure so we have an open forward line. We're doing alright at the stoppage contests but there's no pressure whatsoever from us once the ball gets outside. That must be a record for the lowest number of tackles by a team in one quarter - ONE! Seems we are more interested in corralling them.
Lambert, Vickery & Rance our best 3 so far.
-
Weird game. Dead silence when the Suns get the ball or a free.
-
Flossy nice side-step on the wing finds Lids. Jack now goes over TV's head and it's rushed.
TV gave away a free so no score.
We've just had our second tackle.
-
:banghead
Allowed Hall again to bounce 3 times through the centre and inside 50 under no pressure. Lucky he missed.
37 - 13
-
We're going sideways too much this quarter. Allowing the Suns to get numbers behind the ball.
We still get it through and lloyd kicks a goal :gotigers.
Rich 43
GC 13
-
Lloyd out of the centre. Houli and Thomas run into each other.
We get it forward again and Jack is bear-hugged but no free ::).
-
Suns bad turnover. Grigg to Ellis but he kicks it with his right and not his dominant left and misses.
44 - 19
-
Almost gave up another soft goal but they miss.
We run it down to Vickery. Goal :gotigers
Rich 50
GC 20
-
Cameo king increasing his value
Need to bury these clowns
-
Lucky there. Lynch misses a sitter.
Now they get one thanks to the umps. One set of rules for their forwards and another Jack.
-
Commentators starting their rubbish barracking for the underdogs again. Dixon made contact with ranch not facing the ball, that is a free kick everyday of the week but cue commentators "yeah that's a free to Dixon"
-
We are playing pretty soft
-
Pathetic Tigers. Like last week. Give away soft goals in the last minute :banghead. Brought them back into a game they should be out of by now :banghead.
Half-time
Richmond 6.1 8.2-50
Gold Coast 2.0 5.3-33
Goals: Vickery 3, Riewoldt, Lambert, Deledio, Grigg, Lloyd.
-
Taylor Hunt is one of the worst footballers l have seen in my life
:banghead
-
Vickery needs to pull his head in. His playing outside of the team rules. :banghead
-
Commentators starting their rubbish barracking for the underdogs again. Dixon made contact with ranch not facing the ball, that is a free kick everyday of the week but cue commentators "yeah that's a free to Dixon"

Good thing we gave him another 2 years :chuck

so much headbutting today...lol :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Taylor Hunt is one of the worst footballers l have seen in my life
:banghead
Good thing we gave him another 2 years :chuck
Fair dinkum he is weak as pee. He is scared of being hurt & just lets the opposition shove him out of the way. He shirks a contested ball. He turns the ball over constantly. Has got to be dropped his the weakest link.
-
Just 3 scores from 17 inside 50s that quarter. Complete turnaround from the first quarter. The Suns on the other hand had 6 scores from just 9 entries.
-
:gotigers strange kick at goal Dusty but they all count. Newman again leading the way setting up
-
Newman having a field day out Nice mark & goal :gotigers
-
Lambert long and Newy marks it running with the flight in the goalsquare. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 62
GC 33
-
We are so much a better team when we play direct and kick long.
-
Just 3 scores from 17 inside 50s that quarter. Complete turnaround from the first quarter. The Suns on the other hand had 6 scores from just 9 entries.

Ivan punch it through properly to rush it.
87 - 39
-
Lids marks on the lead. Misses.
88 - 39
25 mins Q3

Cotch high to the goalsquare. Spoiled. Shaw knocks it out of bounds deliberately but not paid ::).

Another soft late goal to them :banghead.
-
Too cute by Lloyd.
Lennon takes a long ping but misses.
89 - 43
-
Umps won't pay a free to our tall forwards.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 6.1 8.2 14.5-89
Gold Coast 2.0 5.3 7.3-45
Goals: Vickery 3, Lloyd 3, Deledio 2, Riewoldt, Lambert, Grigg, Newman, Maric, Martin.
-
For a team that is disseminated by injuries. l'm not happy that we are still playing poorly. We should be smashing this side by 80 points at 3/4 time instead of 44 points
-
For a team that is disseminated by injuries. l'm not happy that we are still playing poorly. We should be smashing this side by 80 points at 3/4 time instead of 44 points
We switch off mentally. Either trying to be too cute or trying to play "perfect" football by overusing the pill.
Let's hope this isn't a repeat of the St Kilda game where we switch off completely in the last thinking the game is over.
-
Houli's chip finds Lambert inside 50 running back with the flight. Goal :gotigers
Rich 95
GC 45
-
Our forward 50 entries are just stupid.
It's like there isn't any reason or idea to it. Not enough movement or leading.
When there's a lead they either bomb it long or only honor the lead if it's the smallest players in our team. If we have a bit of space we kick it to the opposition teams advantage just to make it harder for our forwards, it's as if the directive is to kick the ball to May if you can't think of anything else to do.
-
How good has lambert been ? Deledio too. Playing good footy. Not great though.. Good to see us punish a lower side for once
-
Also a better team with Morris in the backline I think.
-
Miles subbed out for McIntosh.
-
Dusty to Ellis to Lennon. Goes long and Thomas chips in to mark in front of Vickery. Thomas goal :gotigers
Rich 101
GC 46
-
Good idea to sub Miles, Give him a rest
-
Ellis didn't lead and we turn it over. Suns run it up for goal :banghead.
101 - 52

McIntosh to Lloyd to Newy in space 50m out. Finds Ellis. Goal :gotigers
Rich 107
GC 54
-
Chris Newman has been excellent today. :clapping
-
It's that kind of stuffing up by hand when we have the numbers that ticks me off. Kick the bloody thing!
-
3 goals for 4 inside 50s but we've given up 9 inside 50s the other way.
These umps have no idea. Pushed as the Suns player kicked it and the ump pays it downfield :banghead. Justice that Lynch misses,
Morris may have done a hammy running off the ground.
-
We go coast-to-coast.
Jack off the ground goal :gotigers
Rich 113
GC 55

6 goals from 7 inside 50s. The Suns have 1 goal from 10 entries.
-
The Dees aren't doing us any favours. The Dogs have the first 4 goals in their game.
-
Batch to Dusty (free). Dusty plays on and goals :gotigers.
These umps just make it up as they go. That one should have been brought back :lol.
Rich 131
GC 55

Newy on the wing. Cotch marks. To Dusty who roosts it from 50 but it's a point.
132 - 55

Newman got dumped late & hard after kicking that ball yet we never got a free kick umpire. But he payed one against Morris early
-
overuse again
-
Why are trying to take time off the clock? Go for the %, Tiges.

Lennon 65m out. Sharing it around. Finally Cotch finds Vickery on the lead. Siren. Goallllllllllllllllll :gotigers

great game Chris Newman,

We kicked the last 6 goals of the game. So we finished the game off well and as we should've have. 83 point win a great percentage booster.
-------------------------------------------
In his 150th career game, Richmond captain Trent Cotchin leads all players on the ground in contested possessions (14) and clearances (9).
A strong second half from Dustin Martin has seen him in contention for three Brownlow votes. He has 29 disposals, seven marks (two contested), six clearances, six tackles, nine score involvements and has kicked 3.1.
The metre-eaters for today include Brandon Ellis 561 metres gained (26 disposals) and Bachar Houli 542 metres gained (23 disposals).

Happy with the Lloyd, Lambert, Lennon, games & a good idea to have McIntosh as the sub. Will make him realize their is more to the game than bombing the ball blindly into the forward line. Newman was superb & hit up everything :clapping
-
I expected no less.
Very happy with the performances of Lambert, Lennon, Morris, Newman and Lloyd.
Low tier players getting the job done!
-
Ordinary first half. No defensive pressure and barely a tackle. Game should have been over on the scoreboard but we coughed up those late two goals to keep the Suns in it. Reminders of last week. Apparently, Dimma wasn't happy with the lack of tackling. Second half, we put the foot down and were more efficient going inside F50. The best thing was we buried them in the last. You'd take a 83 point win at the start of the match.
-
I don't like soft footy and today was very ordinary because GC Suns are rooted as a club. They waved the white flag early and that was it. From our point of view I like the progression of Lennon and Lambert both are coming on very nicely. Good win and great percentage boost but by gee we need to be harder at the footy next week.
-

I tackle in first quarter. Second quarter was atrocious. Hardwick must have roasted them at half time. 2nd half much better. Happy with result but could have won by over 100 POINTS if second quarter had been better.

For the record that was the Gold Coast's second biggest loss in 2015 - West Coast got them by 92 earlier in the season.

Rance (again) and Dusty have been named in this week's AFL website's Team of the Week:
ALEX RANCE (Richmond) - Had the better of Gold Coast's Charlie Dixon, keeping him to six possessions, two marks and one goal. Rance himself had 24 possessions, nine marks and four rebound 50s.
DUSTIN MARTIN (Richmond) - Best on ground in the Tigers' big win over Gold Coast, racking up 29 possessions, six clearances and three goals. Could be squeezed to half-forward but deserves recognition as one of the round's best midfielders.
