-
Thanks newy for a stellar career , leadership has set the tone for a bold new Tigers era that will become a dynasty :clapping
-
Well done Chris, great career and a very good decision.
-
Was a wonderful skipper through an extremely tough time. I rated him as better than most. Reckon he still has a bit to offer but a good call. Onya Newy!
-
Although I think he went on one season too long
I do believe he was a good leader who introduced a number of things into club culture wise that will stand the test of time
The most important being making those around him understand the importance and privilege of wearing the Richmond jumper; which was something that got lost for fair period of time.
I applaud him for that :clapping

Just as he is starting to play ok he announces his retirement. Thanks for being a loyal servant to the RFC. :clapping

For that we admire & thank you. Best of luck for the future & may the lads push into this finals series with you. You truely are a Tiger. :thumbsup :clapping :clapping :clapping

"Newy defined a culture and restored pride in our @Richmond_FC Jumper. What a legacy!"

---------------------------------------------------------
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said Newman had made a huge impact at Punt Road.
“Chris has been an outstanding representative of the Richmond Football Club for 15 years, both on and off the field,” Hardwick said.
“He has been a brilliant player, a strong and composed leader, and a magnificent role model.
“He took over as Richmond captain in a difficult time, and carried himself impressively as he helped build the strong culture which exists at Tigerland today.
“I’m sure the players will be doing everything they can to make sure he gets an appropriate send-off, and it’s fitting that our fans can pay tribute to him during the remainder of the season.”

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-08-18/newman-tells-teammates
“I never thought I’d be captain of the best club in the world, with the best supporters, and the best people.
“A lot of things have changed, but one thing that hasn’t changed for me is my passion for the jumper, and how much it means to me to get the opportunity to play in that jumper every week.
“I’ll miss more than anything putting the jumper on before games with you blokes.”

When someone says they play for the jumper, you take it with a grain of salt these days, but I believe he did.

That is his legacy to this club = the importance of that jumper. Instilled that into the players while he was captain. It got lost for a long time IMV and that cultural fabric he bought back and I thank him for that
-
An average footballer who was gifted a career at a poo club.
No leadership qualities whatsoever yet was made captain.
Says a lot.....
Thanks for occupying a spot for three years too long on top of being a poo player for most of your career.
Well done Chris.
The dream is over. Thank stuff.

Retiring Tiger Newman dares to dream about fairytale flag
Jason Phelan,
AAP
August 19, 2015 1:57 PM
RICHMOND veteran Chris Newman is hoping for a fairytale finish to his career.
The 33-year-old announced this week he will retire at end of the current campaign and while he remains focused on making the finals first and foremost, he has allowed himself to dream of ending his career as a Tigers' premiership player.
"Well, you've always got to allow for it," Newman said on Wednesday.
"It's what every player wants to do, they want to play in a premiership."
"We've got a proud history with a lot of players who have done that.
"Although we've only got three weeks left in the season, it feels like we've got a lot of improvement left and a long way to go to even be in the mix to win a flag this year."
Richmond is in sixth spot with 12 wins, but Newman is understandably reluctant to assume the team will make the finals given he played 232 games before experiencing finals football.
Even then, he had to endure further disappointment when the Tigers fell at the elimination final stage of each of the past two seasons.
However, he's confident both he and his teammates are better for the experience.
"The past is past and I'm just really confident in this group," he said.
"We've played very well against the best (teams) this year (but) we've also played some pretty ordinary footy, so we've got to get the balance right.
"Hopefully, we can have a good game this week (against Collingwood) and really finish off strong."
Newman announced his retirement with three games left to play because he was experiencing growing anxiety about his impending departure from Punt Road.
He says at times this season, he has felt like the game had moved past him a bit and while he remains confident he can still play a role for the team, he's comfortable the time is right to walk away.

And you're a silly old human. Success goes 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 etc up to 10. Won't get 11 with Newy but he was a decent player for a few years.

Then credit should be given to him for recognising that
-
I do think he went on probably 2 seasons too long but take nothing away from him, he was a decent player for a while there and has done a bit for the club. I wish him the best
-
Just watched his announcement to the team. Heart-warming stuff and as others have said, totally committed to the jumper. Regardless of our opinions of his worth in his last couple of seasons, a good place in our club's rich history is well-earned.
-
im still just glad he has retired.
-
He signifies a losing culture but that's only 50% his fault. :snidegrin
I'll clap him for that too.
All jokes aside, I'm glad he's retiring.
-
Think Chris has done the correct thing would have struggled next year as we all knw not the quickest player, hopefully the tigers give him a good send office maybe early October.... With Foley gone know Newy do u think Pettard will get the hint as well :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup
GO U TIGERS
-
Definately time but Newmo was our captain and a good soldier holding the fort during some crap times while we had a pretty young squad learning the ropes. Pulled the occasional gem out his arse with an awesome tackle or goal. Loved his long kicking.
-
What holding the fort really mean?
Continued to turn up to work amidst a sea of continuing loserdom?
The RFC would have continued just fine without Chris "holding down the fort".
-

I reckon he has cheapened the importance of the jumper by playing on these past 2 years. Prior to that I applaud his career but the ending has me thinking he has perpetuated the selfish era of the playing list of the last 2 decades.
I hope the current mob are more selfless, it will help them (and us) see team success.

I'd be laying the blame for this at the feet of those who continually select him.
-
He's an adult, he should be equally responsible
-
He's an adult, he should be equally responsible
You're totally right. He should have turned down a paycheck, stopped playing a sport he enjoys and stopped providing for his family. Real irresponsible of him
-
Spoke to him a couple of times, good bloke but should have done the right thing & retired at the end of last season.
-

Not arguing that, we are taking about valuing the jumper, not his family.
-
thats just bollocks. if he overates himself, by thinking he has something to contribute when he doesnt, that has nothing to with his valuing of the jumper.
Although he has had a long time in football, a football career is relatively short. I cant blame any person for wanting to continue their career as long as they can. Once you pull the pin, there's no going back, its over.
If the match committee refused to select him then that would influence his thinking, but as long as they select him , he, as most players would, will see this as vindication to continue on playing.
His career went a few longer than it should, but to label a player selfish just because he wants to continue doing something he enjoys and has been the main focus in his life for the last ten years is unfair.
-
You do realise when he plays a game he doesn't pick himself to play
If you think he played too long, direct your anger elsewhere.
It seems he was the only person at the club to realise he had gone on too long
I don't think he's been that shabby, but I'm sure he would agree to give a younger kid a go is probably the best way to go.
-
he should retire after satdy then
-
before would be better
-
Newy was a very good footballer in his prime. Unfortunately for him, we were crap as a side during that time. Not the first footballer at Richmond during the past 35 years that that has happened to. Even Newy admitted during the past week that at times this year the game now has gone past him despite his mind and body feeling okay. That's why he is retiring.
-
Funny thing is hes looked quicker and sharper over the past 5-6 weeks than he has the past 3 years
-
last 1-2 weeks, maybe
-
Done his hammy...
Knights in next week.
Apparently he is ok now.. :huh
-
SUB HIM OFF!!!!
-
He just kicked a goal. :gotigers :gotigers :gotigers
-
to be honest he looks done as a player. a fine servant of our club.
-
It's not that he looks spent but the pace of the game has well and truly gone past him.
Whilst we are winning well it's okay, finals intensity will expose Newy.
Could be an important sub though as a forward pinch hitter at best.
-
Sub could be the solution. ...
Poor lennon
-
agree, should have been subbed of at 3/4 time when he was cramping
Funny thing is hes looked quicker and sharper over the past 5-6 weeks than he has the past 3 years
last 1-2 weeks, maybe
normal transmission has resumed. he looked not just slow of body, but more worring, slow of mind.
-
As long as he keeps getting picked, well it's okay because he plays for the jumper.
-
Sub could be the solution. ...
Yeh. Sub standard.
-
Lmao at a career downhill skier like newman invoking empathy from supporters
because he played three years too long and puts himself before the club.
Should stand aside for the remaining 2 matches.
