AFL to officially scrap sub rule and slash number of rotations in bid to reduce on-field congestion

Herald-Sun
September 3, 2015

THE AFL has formally decided to abolish the substitute rule from next season and reduce interchange rotations.

The Herald Sun can reveal the green and red vests will be gone from the game in 2016 and interchange rotations will be slashed from 120 to 90.

The reduction in rotation numbers is part of an AFL plan to try to reduce on-field congestion.

League chiefs have formally told club leaders of the planned move today.

AFL Players Association chief executive Ian Prendergast supported the move and thanked the league for taking on player feedback.

“We are very happy with the substitute rule being removed,” Prendergast told the Herald Sun.

Finally... Sub rule gone next year. Bout time! Shocking rule!

About time, the sub rule has been a terrible initiative. Great to see @AFL listening to the players feedback!

“While we preferred for the number of rotations remain between 100 and 120, we are comfortable it will have limited impact on players given it will be balanced out by being able to rotate four players off the bench, without the substitute rule.

“We thank the AFL for taking an open and transparent approach to these issues and appreciate the contribution from the players throughout the process, in particular the members of the ‘Players and The Game’ group.”

A league spokesman confirmed the changes on Thursday afternoon.

A formal announcement is expected later today.

I'm presuming this will mean sides will need to play two mobile rucks they can rotate between the ruck & forward line and have more mids who can play up forward and take a mark while providing defensive pressure when 'resting' out of the middle.

I don't think this minor reduction in rotations will have much positive effect on the congestion. Expect to see more of the same stacks on the mill, telephone box stuffing in 2016.

drop it to 40 interchanges 10 a qtr and 2 on the bench

reducing it to 90 interchanges is offset by the fact there is 4 on the bench now

Game is more structured than it used to be and the players a fitter. If you want to go back to the old days then cut the salaries and make everyone go back to day jobs.

structure is leading to it becoming soccer like waiting for the errant pass or the long bomb into the defensive 8 on 2.  It really sux to watch.  It is just frustrating.
