Must win game!
About the only time during the entire year that this stupid saying actually has meaning. Of course it is, if we don't, what do you think is left?? There is no week after that.
-
8 point game.
That's ridiculous!!!

Booked my flights from/to Sydney, but not before the airlines put the price up. I'm assuming that I get from the G to Tulla in plenty of time for the 8:35 flight to Sydney. I'm wondering if I'll have time for a celebratory beer at the MRC after the game?

AFL Finals 2015: we look at the first week of AFL finals and who will win?
Herald-Sun
September 06, 2015
FIRST ELIMINATION FINAL
RICHMOND V NORTH MELBOURNE
Burning questions
1. Just how big is this game for Richmond?
Let’s not beat around the bush, it’s absolutely enormous. This is a big club, with a big fan base and they haven’t won a final since 2001.
Damien Hardwick has had plenty of time to cultivate a list and a winning culture and they’ve had as good a season as they’ve had under his tenure.
But the last two elimination final defeats — to Carlton and Port Adelaide — have been painful, to say the least. If a third consecutive was to follow against the Roos on Sunday, it would be the most bitter of pills to swallow.
2. Can Ivan Maric cope with Todd Goldstein?
Big Ivan has had a solid year, but Goldstein has been on another planet for much of it. The pair last met in Tassie way back in Round 6, where Goldstein got the chocolates with 11 disposals 36 hit-outs.
It’s Goldstein’s enormous engine and work ethic around the ground that has put most opponents to the sword. But if there’s one ruckman who has the desire and mobility to counter that, perhaps it’s Maric.
It promises to be a fascinating contest, not just to see which midfield gets first use, but which big man can push forward to make a fool of the other one and hit the scoreboard.
3. How will North’s stars return from their contentious week off?
The great unknown. What is known, however, is that if North get rolled those screaming ‘Told you do’ may deafen Brad Scott.
His overworked midfield would have appreciated the rest, along with the nine days between the Round 23 game and this elimination final. It’s difficult to blame him.
But this is a side that has had to keep every hand to the wheel to feature in this year’s finals. How will they handle the pressure-cooker atmosphere of a final against Richmond and its rabid fans after so many days between hit-outs?
4. Can Robbie Tarrant contain Jack Riewoldt?
Needless to say, a critical match-up. But Tarrant will go in quietly confident after a promising performance on Friday night.
The young Roo kept a tight leash on the matchwinning Tiger in the first half of that bizarre Round 23 meeting, keeping him goal-less and to zero influence.
Riewoldt, like many of his teammates, responded with vengeance in the second hour, marking well in the third quarter and setting up opportunities before kicking two goals himself in the last quarter when the floodgates opened.
You’d think Tarrant will get the job again, with the returning Scott Thompson normally assigned a less-difficult assignment so he can peel off and intercept mark.
If Tarrant can somehow keep Richmond’s leading goalkicker under control, it will go a long way to sending the Roos into a semi-final.
Past meetings:
Richmond 16.12 (108) def North Melbourne 10.7 (67), Round 23, Etihad Stadium
North Melbourne 16.13 (109) def Richmond 10.14 (74), Round 6, Bellerive Oval
Casualty Room
Richmond: Reece Conca (hamstring) test, Corey Ellis (foot) 2-3 weeks, Ben Griffiths (finger) 4 weeks
North Melbourne: Kayne Turner (concussion) test, Daniel Wells (calf) test

First elimination final
Richmond v North Melbourne
MCG
Sunday, September 13, 3.20pm
Selection table:
You didn't hear? North Melbourne have nearly half a team to come back from a week's rest. Key players Todd Goldstein, Andrew Swallow, Shaun Higgins, Scott Thompson, Nick Dal Santo, Jarrad Waite, Ben Cunnington, Michael Firrito and Sam Wright all missed Friday night's elimination final preview against Richmond, while Lindsay Thomas, who has missed the past three games with a foot injury, will also come into the frame. Of the replacements who might have earned the chance to keep their spot for the real thing, youngster Kayne Turner seems the most likely after a spirited three-goal performance on Friday night. However his potential selection will be affected by how he recovers from the head knock he received in a marking contest which caused him to be stretchered from the ground. Jack Ziebell will also be monitored this week for the effects of a high knock he sustained late in the match, but early indications are he will be OK. The Tigers, meanwhile, were the only finals-bound team that did not have an injury concern arising from the final round and are virtually at full strength.
2015 meetings
What do you make of Friday night's game? The Tigers won by 41 points but it was essentially against the "Roos Twos". North gave the favourites a scare in the first half, and were able to implement a defensive set-up that restricted Richmond's ball movement. But it didn't last, with star Tigers Brett Deledio (26 disposals and nine inside 50s) and Trent Cotchin (30 disposals and six inside 50s) providing the spark, Alex Rance blanketing the Roos key forwards and Ty Vickery and Dustin Martin hitting the scoreboard with three goals each. The first meeting between the two clubs, down in Hobart back in round six, was the opposite in terms of game flow, with the Roos breaking free via a six-goal third quarter. Significantly, Thomas was a major factor with an equal season-high five goals. The Roos had won 6 of their past seven against the Tigers before Friday night.
Who will win and why
The pros of giving key players an extended break measured against the cons of potentially losing momentum and gifting your opposition the confidence of beating you just a week before such a high-stakes match will be the main storyline out of this match. Regardless of the actual reasons the Roos win or lose this match, from a public perception point of view, Brad Scott will be judged on the controversial "rest your best" decision – an unfair reality he is acutely aware of. The Tigers will be judged just as harshly in the event of a loss, for it would be the club's third consecutive week-one exit under Hardwick. That the Tigers get an extra two days rest – from last Friday to this Sunday – could help offset the perceived advantage the Roos have in terms of resting key players. In short, it's difficult to see the Tigers succumbing to another early elimination. They are a more mature and consistent all-round team this year.

Matthew Richardson backs Tigers for long-overdue September joy
Herald-Sun
September 8, 2015
MATTHEW Richardson says a finals win this weekend could set up his beloved Tigers for an almighty winning streak.
The Hall of Famer said the club had finally developed a formula that would deliver results for years to come — and the kind of footy joy Richmond fans had been waiting for.
“It’s been an educated progression under Damien Hardwick but the fans are obviously pretty ready for it,’’ the former champion forward said.
“If you look at the key numbers — it has been the number one defensive squad since Round 6, when they really stepped it up and changed the way they played.
“What they have been doing is fantastic. To win a premiership you have to be able to score 100 points. The Tigers have been able to do that consistently.’’
But Richo admitted it would be tough watching on from the sidelines in his role as a Channel 7 commentator.
The 40-year-old played 282 senior games with the Tigers until he retired in 2009.
“I’m just another footy supporter at the end of the day, but the Richmond fans are passionate and we all really want the team to have some success. It’s going to be difficult to watch but it will be a ripper.’’
The Tigers go in favourites to win against North Melbourne in the first elimination final at the MCG on Sunday.
It will be the third consecutive year the team has made the first week of finals.
Richmond was thrashed by Port Adelaide last year and gave up a 32-point halftime lead against Carlton the year before.
“The burden of dropping the two previous finals really weighs heavily on us,’’ diehard fan Brett “Trout’’ Beattie said on Monday.
“But I think we have matured a lot more and are playing a lot better. We are going to give it a good shot.’’
Even though Richmond goes in favourite, on Monday punters still weren’t convinced.
“Sixty per cent of the money has been for North Melbourne, but they are still rated the outsiders at $2.25, with Richmond $1.65,’’ Tabcorp spokesman Trent Langskaill said.

North getting desperate rushing Wells back?
Daniel Wells could be a shock inclusion for North Melbourne's elimination final against Richmond on Sunday, according to Roos coach Brad Scott.
But Scott told reporters on Tuesday that small forward Lindsay Thomas remained in doubt for Sunday's clash after missing the past two weeks with a foot injury.

Match preview: First Elimination Final, Tigers v Kangaroos
Michael Whiting
afl.com.au
September 8, 2015
SUMMARY
Just nine days after they met in a controversial round 23 match, the two Melbourne clubs will square off again. Last week the Kangaroos were widely criticised for resting almost half their squad while the Tigers trotted out a full strength team and recorded a comfortable win. Who will have the last laugh on Sunday? There's not much between the teams, but the loser will see it as a season wasted.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday September 13, 3.20pm
AEST
WHO'S MISSING
Richmond: With Reece Conca back from his two-week hamstring injury, the Tigers will be at full strength. Ben Griffiths (finger) is still a week away, but the Jack Riewoldt-Ty Vickery forward combination is working fine without him.
North Melbourne: Like their counterparts, the Kangaroos will be near full strength, with Lindsay Thomas (foot) the major concern. Jack Ziebell has overcome a head knock and Daniel Wells has been flagged as a shock late inclusion.
THIS YEAR
Round six, Blundstone Arena: North Melbourne 16.13 (109) d Richmond 10.14 (74).
After a close first half, the Kangaroos punished the Tigers' turnovers to kick six unanswered goals in the third quarter. Lindsay Thomas kicked five goals in a result that pushed Richmond to a 2-4 win-loss record.
Round 23, Etihad Stadium: Richmond 16.12 (108) d North Melbourne 10.7 (67).
Despite resting almost half of its team, the Kangaroos were shock half-time leaders before the Tigers put the foot down to run away with the victory. Dustin Martin starred with 21 touches and three goals
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
R12, 2014, North Melbourne 17.14 (116) d Richmond 13.10 (88) at Etihad Stadium
R15, 2013, North Melbourne 19.14 (128) d Richmond 8.18 (66) at Etihad Stadium
R17, 2012, North Melbourne 15.13 (103) d Richmond 14.15 (99) at the MCG
R24, 2011, North Melbourne 15.14 (104) d Richmond 13.13 (91) at Etihad Stadium
R5, 2011, Richmond 17.10 (112) d North Melbourne 14.19 (103) at Etihad Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1.Richmond’s win last Friday was set up by a nine-goal final quarter. Ty Vickery and Dustin Martin kicked three goals each and Trent Cotchin had 30 disposals.
2. The difference in ruck numbers between the two teams is stark. North Melbourne is ranked fourth for hit outs a game thanks to Todd Goldstein, who leads the competition with a total of 937. Richmond is ranked 14th in the same category.
3. The Kangaroos hold a 3-2 edge in finals matches between the clubs. The last time they met was a 1995 qualifying final, won by North Melbourne by 30 points. Richmond has not won any final since 2001.
4. The Kangaroos are ranked second for goalkicking accuracy, operating at 53.2 per cent. Richmond is ranked 10th at 50.3 per cent.
5. The Tigers continue to struggle in tackling, ranked 17th with 57.8 a game, while the Kangaroos are ranked 11th with 65.4 a game.
6. Despite being rested last week, Goldstein has remained at a career high No.4 in the Official AFL Player Ratings, trailing just Nat Fyfe, Scott Pendlebury and Patrick Dangerfield.
KEY MATCH UPS
1. Todd Goldstein v Ivan Maric
Goldstein is tipped to be All Australian, but Big Ivan has the size and strength to worry him at the contest. Goldstein has been the Kangaroos' most influential player this season and his output is crucial to their success.
2. Jack Ziebell v Trent Cotchin
Sure, they might not go head-to-head, but these two are the barometers for their respective teams. Ziebell leads by brute force and Cotchin by class, and the pair will have a big say on the midfield battle.
3. Dustin Martin v Ben Jacobs
After tearing the Kangaroos apart last week, Martin again looms as the Tigers' dangerman. Jacobs will take him in the midfield, but just as importantly, Michael Firrito will get the big job when he drifts forward.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Richmond: Trent Cotchin. The captain will have horror memories of the corresponding match against Port Adelaide last year. He won the toss, kicked against the breeze and the Tigers were smashed. He'll be desperate to lead his team to a first finals win in 14 years.
North Melbourne: Brad Scott. Whether he likes it or not, this finals campaign will reflect on Scott. From chasing ready-made players like Jarrad Waite and Shaun Higgins in the off-season, to resting everyone last week to prepare – everything is geared towards a deep run.
WHERE THE TIGERS CAN WIN IT
Against Fremantle and Hawthorn, they've have shown they can move the ball quickly and accurately – the older Roos won't like that. If the Tigers are bold, they have the class in Cotchin, Martin and Deledio to do damage forward of centre.
WHERE THE KANGAROOS CAN WIN IT
The closer the game is, the more their experience comes into play. Winning two finals last year was significant, and Higgins and Waite have also won in September. A tight contest will suit these Kangaroos.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 18 points

Apparently a few years ago she upgraded supporting a suburban footy side with bigger crowds and atmosphere than what she was getting at Nought games. Needless to say the bloke in the previous pick was devastated.

Finalists' strengths and weaknesses
Sam Edmund
Herald-Sun
September 8, 2015
Not many sides play like RICHMOND. While the Bulldogs have won rave reviews for their offensive blitz, the Tigers ditched the kamikaze attacking philosophy after it threatened to derail their season. Replacing it was a slow and steady approach.
The go-slow has them generating 37 points per game from behind centre this season — the third-most of any side. But it’s no secret, with rivals clamping down on this in the Tigers’ seven losses.
In their 15 wins they generate 42.6 points from behind centre. In losses it falls to 25.9.
NORTH MELBOURNE’S defence has been a barometer this year. On the surface the Roos are nothing flash, ranking 12th, but it’s the difference in their wins and losses that’s stark.
North has allowed less 90 points in 12 matches, winning all 12. In the 10 times the opposition scores more than that the Roos have won only once.

So many wankers at NM. It's not only because I can't stand them, they just have total wanker blokes. It's almost like that's a prerequisite to get recruited there.

North counting on their "finals experience". I must have missed where they killed it in the finals recently ::) :wallywink.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
While most experts have struggled to split North Melbourne and Richmond ahead of Sunday’s match, the Roos can claim one significant advantage – finals experience.
Overall, North’s 22 have combined for 120 finals appearances, with Brent Harvey (20), Nick Dal Santo (20) and Drew Petrie (10) the most seasoned September campaigners.
The Tigers on the other hand have combined for just 45 finals appearances, with Troy Chaplin (7), Ivan Maric (5) and Shaun Grigg (3) the most experienced heads.

We play in front of huge crowds at the G often

Its not just that Jack.
We just have to win for our club's sake after two failuresat the same stage in the last two years.
If we want to get personal. Then we need to beat this half way house of sub humans.

How do we go against North at the G?
We haven't beaten the Roos at the 'G since 2001. Mind you we've hardly played them at our home ground in that time and not since we've become a finals side ( ::) @ AFL).
We last played them at the 'G over 3 years ago (Round 17, 2012). It was game where Petrie kicked 5 goals in the last quarter. We ended up losing by just 4 points, so in the end the ump, who didn't know the then new rushed behind rule, actually cost us the game by penalising Luke McGuane despite him being surrounded and under pressure by Roo defenders.
Out of interest, 12 of the named 22 Tigers (Conca, Cotchin, Deledio, Edwards, Ellis, Grigg, Houli, Maric, Martin, Newman, Rance, Riewoldt) and 15 of the current 22 Kangaroos played that day.
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/2012/121420120722.html
Prior to that game:
Lost 53-103 in R16, 2010 .... Dimma's first year as coach.
Drew 85-85 in R16, 2009 ..... Rawlings was caretaker coach.
Lost 86-127 in R2, 2008 ..... Under Plough and only Lids and Newy survive from that game.
Won 92-88 in R21, 2001 ..... The night Richo kicked 6 points before kicking the winning goal.

Isn't that the game that Cotchin was reported for running through Swallow? Just going for the ball too and he got off at the tribunal IIRC.

I don't remember, Y&BB, but Cotch did cop 4 weeks for charging Sam Wright back in 2010.

Thanks OE. Can't take much from that due to a small and mostly irrelevant sample size but it definitely doesn't look good in our favour

Five questions on the Richmond-North Melbourne elimination final
Matt Murnane
afl.com.au
September 13, 2015
Does Richmond carry the burden of history and is it a factor?
Coach Damien Hardwick best explained how the Tigers can rationalise this year as a "different challenge", rather than feel the pressure build after failures in 2013 against Carlton and 2014 versus Port Adelaide. "We are a completely different side. We are more well-rounded, we've got improved talent and our style of game has developed and improved over the course of 12 months," he said. He's right. In short, the Tigers are a more mature team, one now of substance rather than potential. But the pressure is still there. The 22 who run out won't be thinking about all those teams that have failed to win a final since 2001. But they do have their own internal expectations that must have grown since 2013 or 2014, as the team has. And then there is the black-and-yellow army who create more expectation than any other supporter base in the league. So in front of 90,000 spectators at the MCG, the Tigers still have to go out and execute and live up to those expectations. And that is pressure.
Why are Richmond better this year?
The have a balanced game, more than they get credit for. Their team defence is one of the best in the league. Conceding just 71 points per game ranks them right up there with Fremantle (71.1) and Hawthorn (70.4). Most importantly, they protect their back six extremely well, which means their key defenders don't get isolated to a dangerous level. They have also added "tempo" to their offence this year, knowing at what point in games they need to go slow, and they have the poise and skill level to execute that plan. They can also go as fast as anyone, signified by their scoring average of 116 points per game over the past three matches, which ranks third in the league.
How does North Melbourne shut down Richmond's ball movement?
By making them kick to a contest. The Tigers rank highly for uncontested marks, particularly out of the back half where they like to retain possession and switch the play. In round 23, the Roos purposefully pushed up on the Tigers and closed down those short, sideways options. This made them kick down the line or long to a pack more often, which put the ball in dispute. This meant the Tigers scored only 0.4 from chains that started out of defence.
Who are the game-breakers?
Brett Deledio. There is a reason the Tigers usually lose when he doesn't play, so shutting him out of the game is the next best thing for the Roos. Deledio is in career-best form, ranking alongside Brownlow Medal favourite Nat Fyfe in many key statistical categories in the second half of the year. Brad Scott gave him five votes in the AFL Coaches Association award (Hardwick did, too) in the round 23 game, so you can take it as read that the Richmond No.3 would have been highest on the Roos' scouting report this week. He had involvements in 14 of the team's 28 scores - 10 is usually considered a huge game - and he ranks No.2 in that category for the league. He presents a difficult match-up when he is forward, because he is too slippery for a tall, and too good overhead for a small. On the flip side, the Roos key forward triple threat could be a key. The Tigers have the best big defender in the AFL, but Alex Rance has always rated the rangy Drew Petrie as his most difficult opponent. Petrie was nearly best on ground with 21 disposals and 10 goals when the Roos beat the Tigers earlier in the year. So if Rance has his hands full again with Petrie, does Jarrad Waite or Ben Brown get off the chain?
How much does the rest help North Melbourne?
Every North player who has spoken this week has remarked on how good they feel. "The benefit was enormous. Every player that was chosen to rest was chosen for a reason. They had some kind of niggle to get over," skipper Andrew Swallow said. The advantage this presents North Melbourne, despite finishing eighth (Richmond were in a sense penalised for finishing close snatching a top-four spot), has been downplayed because the Tigers will have had a bigger-than-usual break (nine days) between Sunday and round 23. It is an optimistic theory pushed by those backing the Tigers, but there has to be some benefit for the Roos. Otherwise, why do it and go through the media storm that has followed? Why do coaches always use back-to-back six-day breaks as an excuse? Every day counts when it comes to recovery, just ask Matt Priddis.

The Opposition Analyst on Richmond v North Melbourne
Opposition Analyst
The Age
September 13, 2015
RICHMOND
What Damien Hardwick Wants?
1. His big forwards to fire. Richmond has become a much improved team in terms of points conceded, mainly through the midfield working back to help out the defence. If the three talls all play (Ben Griffiths, Ty Vickery and Jack Reiwoldt) – they may suitably stretch the Kangaroos defence and set up the win. I would not be surprised to see Ivan Maric in the red vest in the second half, as the Tigers go for more run.
2. His team to continue to show that they have learned. This year we have seen the Richmond team control possession with a smarter method than years gone by. Hardwick's football education and his players ability to execute the 'system' of play has been the reason for their improved performances.
What Hardwick doesn't want?
1. A repeat of last year's elimination final debacle. He will ask Trent Cotchin to simply "Kick WITH the wind" this year (if he wins the toss) and a fast starting, first quarter will put the ghosts of 2014 to rest – finally. This year's Tigers are a different outfit and will be much more comfortable at home on the MCG.
NORTH MELBOURNE
What Brad Scott Wants?
1. Todd Goldstein to have a big say on the game. He will dominate the centre bounces, but it will be his work around the ground as a link player, where he can really expose Ivan Maric's lack of athleticism, that Scott will want from big "Goldy". Goldstein will find plenty of space at the MCG and the North midfielders will look to feed off his possessions through the middle of the ground.
2. To bash and crash the Tigers into submission. There's no doubt that Richmond will try to play an up-tempo brand of football early in the match to expose the Kangaroos lack of legspeed – especially in the midfield. If the 'Roos can control the ball, as they did against the Western Bulldogs, and use their big bodies to play a true finals football style of hard, contested ball, they will back themselves to eventually overcome the Tigers.
What Scott doesn't want?
1. Richmond to get too far away from them. Or worse still – to get a 'second wind' in terms of momentum within the game, most probably from the middle of the third quarter, or early in the last. Scott will know the Kangaroos can run the Tigers down but won't want to have to come from too far back on the scoreboard.

The midfield took out of the ruck did he, ump? ::)

A few years a go Newy would easily make this distance.
WOW. There;s life in the old legs yet :gotigers.

Great pressure Tiges :clapping. Goldstein nailed by Lids. Free and Goal :gotigers
Rich 12

What the hell was that Lambo?
Open teammate, ignores him for 30 secs and then kicks it between two Tiges to a North player :huh
-
lambert makes up for the mistake. Ends up with a Newy free 30m out. But he shanks it :P.
13 - 1
-
BS that was mark :lol
-
Great tough stuff Grimesy :clapping. Flattened Higgins.
Ellis snap goes OOTF.
We get it back and Griffs marks 30m out. Got too close to the mark and misses.
Rich 14
North 2

Can't afford to give away stoppage goals inside Defensive 50 :banghead

That was soft Ellis. Should have killed that out of bounds.,

Another free to them :banghead
Then CHaplin is caught flat-footed :facepalm.
Lucky Waite misses,

Where's the manning up, Tiges :banghead.

Lambert good gather to Griffs but he misses again.

Straight landing into Jack's back and no free ::)

No prior. Yeah right ump :lol
-
Quarter time
Richmond 2.3-15
North Melb. 1.6-12
Goals: Newman, Deledio
-
Missed 3 gettable goals but so did North, so we didn't get punished for it. We need to take our chances.
Defensively, we getting sucked up the field which is what North wants. They want to play the back-half turnover and counterattack style.
Loose checking on North's spread. Also allowed the ball over the back when North was coming out of defence which is a no-no :banghead
Goldstein was a worry a couple of times there.
-
Good spoil Grimesy. Macca then hits up Jack 35m out on a 45 degree angle. Goallllllll :gotigers
Rich 21
North 12
-
Man up the North defensive outs :banghead
-
Shocking kick Titch. In the air to Lids.
We get it back. Lids' kick to TV isn't great but VIckery does a 1980 KB - turns the Hansen inside out on the boundary and runs into a goal :gotigers
Rich 27
Nth 12

Clever fake by Miles and earns the free 50m out. Goalllllllllllllllllllllllllll :gotigers
Rich 33

Miles really stepping up. Pressure on him to perform I reckon. Finals type player

Chaplin only one who flew. He had his man in petrie covered

Griffs- you don't just tap a free ball down defensive side to a North runner :banghead. Gifts them a goal :banghead.
33 - 18
-
Bad turnover by North and Chaplin intercepts. Over to Macca who finds Jack again on the lead in the same spot. Goallllllllllll :gotigers
We get it back.
Rich 39
Nth 18
Winning the centre clearances this qtr too.
-
That was a waste. Macca in the clear at HF and Rance shanks it out of bounds for a throw-in.
-
That was too easy, Tiges. Macca you needed to nail Higgins on the boundary; not corral him. Sets up a North goal.
39 - 24
-
Harvey - So you can just drop the ball to avoid a tackle ::).
Waite hits the post.
39 - 25
-
Waite is flogging Batch.
-
Grigg's short pass misses Dusty who slips and over and gifts North a goal :banghead.
It's those bloody stupid things that cost us :banghead.
39 - 31
-
Where's our front and sqaure crumbers :banghead.
We've gone into dumbo mode :banghead. Got to mentally tougher.
39 -37
-
Stop the bloody stupid short passes to a contest :banghead.
-
Great mark by TV. Free men on the members side at HF and TV doesn't look and just bombs it two Jack outnumbered.
-
Griffs mark 60m out. Ends up with Titch and the moronic North defender gives away 50 :lol. Thanks Roo boy. We needed that goal to settle us :gotigers.
Rich 45
Nth 37
-
Free to Miles in the centre. Lids takes the advantage, over to Macca to Newy and Newy bombs a long goal :gotigers.
Rich 51
Nth 37
Miles with 7 of our 15 clearances :o.
-
And we gift them a goal back ::).
Two Tigers (one of them Hunt) sit off the North players going for the ball and we gift Harvey a goal :banghead
-
Rance out of defence long to Maric (free). Over to Newy who hits up TV 60m out. Goes long and Jack is held by Firrito 15m out on an angle.
GOallllllllllllll. 3 to Jack :gotigers

Half-time
Richmond 2.3 9.3-57
North Melb. 1.6 6.8-44
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Newman 2, Vickery, Deledio, Edwards, Miles.

Some of the boys are a bit down, Edwards, Cotch, Lids, if they can lift its all over. Jack has been brilliant.
-
Bring on the Conca.. bit of magic needed.
-
Some of the boys are a bit down, Edwards, Cotch, Lids, if they can lift its all over. Jack has been brilliant.
True WAT. A good sign on some ways. We're in front and still have plenty of areas to improve in and stars that need to lift.
Miles has been simply awesome in the guts. Rance has contained Petrie.
We've just got to cut out the dumb stuff and silly schoolboy errors. Most of North's goals that quarter were through our own silly mistakes.
-
Bring on the Conca.. bit of magic needed.
Dimma usually waits until late to give us some extra run and fresh legs in the last quarter.
-
I feel like throwing up
-
I feel like throwing up
:lol
I spewed up a few times with a brainless missed short passing and mistackles :scream.
-
Mind-boggling matching Batchelor against Waite, I would've at least had Grimes on him from the beginning and was perplexed why it took so long to make the change. Should have known history would suggest Waite has always caused us problems.
Unbelievable :banghead
-
Need to cut out these momentum killers, couple of times we have had clear ascendancy only to make schoolboy errors and hand goals on a silver platter. The game we lost to North during the season should be evidence enough as to what turnovers do you to. Also as someone else mentioned we are working too much like sheep dogs in our defensive 50 when they have possession, need to be more like pitbulls and attack the player as quickly as possible to reduce their options.
-
The Kangaroos were better in close in the first half winning 15 more contested possessions and six more clearances, but the Tigers were more efficient recording 18 more effective kicks and a shot-at-goal accuracy 26 per cent better than the Kangaroos.
Anthony Miles recorded eight disposals at 88 per cent efficiency, eight contested possessions, seven clearances including six centre clearances, and one goal.
Jack Riewoldt finished the second quarter with nine disposals at 89 per cent efficiency, four marks, four score involvements and three goals.
The Tigers have gone inside 50 three times from eight kick-ins.
Taylor Garner recorded seven disposals at 86 per cent efficiency in the second quarter as well as five score involvements including two goal assists.

This x 2 :clapping.

Cotch and Lambert need to get more involved, if we can get a bit more of the ball through the midfield i feel we can break this game wide open. Of course some more silly errors and the same thing could happen the other way.
-
Reckon we can come out after half time and split this game open. But we need Dusty to produce some magic and Lids, Edwars and Cotch to get involved. Not sure about Griff at the moment.. :-\

Two misses handballs and two shocking kicks out of defence :banghead.
Just rush it through you idiots!
Thank you Chaplin.

I am not confident now, we look a bit shattered. :-\
-
What a shocking, pathetic and soft quarter from us :banghead. Only positive is we're only 4 pts down.
Dimma, needs to shake a few up literally like he did against GWS in the 3/4 time huddle.
Got to FIGHT for finals win, Tiges. Effort and doing the basics well (hello tackling and team pressure) and the rest will take care of itself. Turning over the footy every two secs and mistackle after mistackle doesn't cut it! >:(
-
I am not confident now, we look a bit shattered. :-\
Got to FIGHT AND FIGHT AND WIN. Our leaders need to stand up. Lids, Cotch, Titch have been absent. Need a big lift this quarter from them. All starts in the middle and at the contests where we were crap that quarter.
-
We're Stuffed!
Another heartless performance from our Leaders when it counts
-
Bloodsy stupid shorts kicks to a contest :banghead

Nice tap by Ivan on the wing to Conca. High high ball and Jack taps it and marks it 35m out. Goal :gotigers

Poor defending at the D50 stoppage but thanks ump for the free to Cunnington in the middle and non-makr to Rance ::)

This is it. How bad do they want it.

Two clear frees to us ignored by the umps >:(

Jack whacked high anmd Conca scragged by the jumped. Bloody cheats!

Problem is that as other sides have done North has closed down the short options but of course we have probably been drilled all week not to go to a contest. You would think common sense would prevail but this is Richmond we are talking about.
-
No use appealing to the umps. They're on the Roos >:(.

3rd quarter was pathetic effort. Until then have bene screwed by the umps this qtr.

Great play Rance. To Dusty who kick overshoots Tv byt TV makes good. Finds Grigg who finds Miles 50m out. Ball jhooked and it's a throw-in.,
Houli marks the kick-ouit by North.
That's hoklding the ball you cheats >:(

Now that was a poo non decision...

Thats it... :banghead

I'm sorry but who says the umps didn't decide this last quarter wasn't watching the game today. Absolute disgrace >:(

Lids won't want to remember today.

Lies and Cotchin really let us down.

Bit late to be paying us frees now, ump ::).

Sliding doors.
If the blatant dropping the goal by Cunnington was called and we hit the lead, instead of it going the other way for a goal

All over RFC, in the end, what was the point of getting there, FFS.

Final Score
Richmond 2.3 9.3 12.3 14.4-88
North Melb. 1.6 6.8 11.13 15.15-105
Goals: Riewoldt 4, Newman 2, Vickery 2, Deledio, Edwards, Miles, McIntosh, Lambert, Conca.

We're stuffn cursed.
Griffiths was a bad decision. Lloyd would have been the difference.
Such an idiot decision
-
Lies and Cotchin really let us down.
Fair comment. Add Titch as well.
And Batchelor.....hes not getting off scott free this time. He was crap all day.
-
Ok so today is a complete failure. There is no other way to put it. We don't have finals footballers. North whether we like it or not is better than us, they have better performers and better players. Moneyball and cheap recruiting can only get you so far. We have lost again today and deservedly so. If Blair Hartley and Damien Hardwick reckon this side has any chance of ever winning anything - they are kidding themselves.
Its time to get out the chequebooks and start getting real big game performers. Running around picking up players like Yarran will make no difference to us. We finished where we deserved too. That's it. That's the truth.
We CHOKED and FAILED! not because we wanted too but because our players aren't good enough.
-
Sliding doors.
If the blatant dropping the goal by Cunnington was called and we hit the lead, instead of it going the other way for a goal
Last quarter display from the umps was a joke >:(.
-
Conca and Griff should not have played. Bloody Lennon being dropped was idiotic, im dumbfounded.
-
I meant Lennon.
-
Sliding doors.
If the blatant dropping the goal by Cunnington was called and we hit the lead, instead of it going the other way for a goal
Last quarter display from the umps was a joke >:(.
That one isolated was a blatant howler though. Took on the play, was tackled, tried to kick it and hit fresh air. It wasn't a 50/50, open to interpretation or out of view or anything like that. It was just absolutely wrong and we lost a shot on goal for the lead from a great position because of it. The momentum never swung our way again since then.
-
Pressure. They can't handle it.
-
No small forwards on a beautiful day.
What a joke.
-
We Choked guys. We can blame the umpires all we like but the reality is our players aren't good enough at this level.

Nope. We kept wasting our forward entries by putting it down Hansen's throat. But the one incident I'm harping on about is pure BS and it decided the game. Atrocious umpiring in that situation.

15 wins in 2 of the last 3 seasons.
Good leads in two of the last 3 elimination finals.
0 wins 3 losses.
Unacceptable.
You can twist it how you like. Failure of the highest order.
Nothing more to say.

No we didn't choke. We were beaten by the same game plan that has beaten us every time we play this mob. We don't do anything to break their checking of our midfielders and we don't do anything to stop them setting up in front of us. In fact we actually play it right into their hands. Game was lost before the first bounce.
-
It can only be a CHOKE and a FAILURE ... there is no other words to describe it.
-
We Choked guys. We can blame the umpires all we like but the reality is our players aren't good enough at this level.
Unfortunately you are correct.
Players that got found out today were:
Batchelor, had an absolute shocker, we should try and trade him while he has some perceived currency.
Hunt, again another one, that just isn't up to finals footy.
Grigg, had a shocker, not up to finals footy.

We choked ... we were 21 points up twice in this game. We choked. The sooner our supporters stop deluding themselves the better off we will be.
No we didn't choke. We were beaten by the same game plan that has beaten us every time we play this mob. We don't do anything to break their checking of our midfielders and we don't do anything to stop them setting up in front of us. In fact we actually play it right into their hands. Game was lost before the first bounce.
We choked big fella. You cant be in control like we were and lose like that. Our players made stupid error upon stupid error. Go have a look at the replay. Youll see in the cool light of day that we choked.

Agreed Dwaino. You're just right.

Miles is the best

blame the players all you like
this system dimma likes CANNOT stand up in finals
why did we lose??? look at the contested possessions count
3 strikes and out...he has to go
-
the club isn't gonna payout $600-$700k for nothing. Hardwick will see out his contract and I believe they will give him a 2 year extension which will be announced shortly.
-
We got beaten just about everywhere
- beaten in the ruck
- beaten in the clearances inside and outside
- beaten,; no, smashed in the contests
- beaten in the air down the line
- smashed in scoring shots
It was a comprehensive whalloping.

We got up on the scoreboard but still were never ever comprehensively beating them. Go watch it yourself and see how often we blazed away from centre bounce straight to them. In the final quarter they even took the pee by putting another again spare in defense to start their overlaps since they knew if we couldn't beat their system for 3 quarters we weren't going to do it in the last. IMO this is solely on Hardwick.

The HUGE HOLES once again became apparent.
3/3 losses is enough to call for change.

I agree, that and vickerys miss was the game.
They were better we were poor no denying that but even so, those 2 decisions and outcomes were different and I have no doubt we would've won, you could sense momentum swinging our way.
I'm stuffing filthy
-
One word - disappointing
-
Despite the loss at least it was decent watching it with EEA and his old man since my old man refuses to go anymore if he thinks we will to sides like Norf so I only go with the missus and she isn't even a Tigers supporter (I think she's slowly converting though ;D). Mostly good fellas on OER :cheers
-
Stuffing shinbonehead tossers. Lindsay thomas should be banned for life what a little twerp. Grimes should have taken his foot and shoved it down his throat.
-
Well I actually expected us to lose so i'm not really peeed off to be honest. I knew they would be us, we didn't turn up and we looked as crappy as we did against the Crows.
-
How long can we as supporters keep going with this circus act. 70k members next year ?
-
Club needs to shake their playing personnel up.
Players like Grigg, Titch, Griff, Chaplin, failing when the heat is on. 3 years running. Unacceptable.
Need to vigorously bring quality to the club otherwise these mid table nothing finishes will become the norm.
No point talking about a premiership window when you can't win a final once you get there.
I'm wondering the finals window needs to open further because you have to wonder what not getting past the first finals hurdle three years in a row can do to the psyche of our side.
Just unacceptable.
Our skipper, Lids and Dusty three of our best players on the list were extremely disappointing.
How can we expect on the other hand our lower tier players to lift their game when our prime movers were woeful.
Jack and Miles to me are the only ones who can hold their heads high after that.
Eff me. :-\

Well l'm gutted. :banghead

New strain of the " Colliwobble" virus has infected Tigerland .
Imagine the pressure if we are lucky enough to make the finals next year . It will be enormous .

As if the pressure wasn't enormous enough in 2013/14/15.
We have never handled it well as a club/or team.
Pies made GF in 79/80/81 by 82 Tom Hafey had last the players and the Pies were gone.
If Dimma is a dead man walking next year we may be licked at least for the next few years.
-
I really think it's simple. Too many players can't handle
Pressure and expectations. I think jack can. Rance can. Maybe miles and that's about it.
I think we have the players to be a top 4 side and push for a flag but the mental weaknesses are stuffed. And what peees me off most is we have heard the same poo 3 years in a row about how this loss will burn in their stomach and they can't wait to prove themselves next year. Less talk and more walk
-
I don't know where the change will come from between now and next year. We already had two poor finals exits to rue on, not sure how a third will fire them up any differently. I'm now more worried that they will mentally devastated and we will be even worse off.
-
Its gotta have an effect. Geelong of the 90s could never bust the hoodoo. The Colliwobbles was coined for a reason. At this point Id be preparing to trade out players and trade in players of equal value but without the mental scars. I think the list will have to turn over a bit.
-
We need to bring in players that have been successful. I was totally against Stevie j but perhaps he could help. Or try poach players from hawthorn
-
I'd take Johnson for a season for no other reason to stand up and show the way in a big final.

Spot on talent is there no doubt but to many players go to water when the pressure is on and a mentally weake it showed Cotchin,Lids,Martin,Ellis,Edwards all our topline midfield went missing.

Careful there Ramps. Not good for your health. Just think to yourself that it is just a game. That's the way I handle it.
-
With all their bromances, coifed hair cuts, fancy Tatts...still played like under 12s and crapped themselves when the pressure was applied.
Are these blokes pandered to, seriously no guts and determination was shown yesterday.

Richmond reflections
richmondfc.com.au
September 18, 2015
In the wake of Richmond’s elimination final loss to North Melbourne last Sunday, ‘Roar Vision’ recorded the views of several Tiger players (Grimes, Miles, Ellis, Houli, Vlastuin, Grigg, Conca & Rance) on that disappointing defeat, and the team’s 2016 prospects.
Dylan Grimes
“To finish the way that we did, the third year in-a-row, is really disappointing. We had some players that were down . . . They’ll be the first to admit that as well, but at the end of the day, we’re a team and we rely on every player, as much as any other player. We didn’t bring our best game and North did . . . that was pretty much it. Our (2016) season starts now. Individually, we get better, as a group we get better, our game plan gets stronger, we mature, and we go further.”
Alex Rance
“You always have to put it in perspective . . . it’s a game at the end of the day. It means a lot to a lot of people, but there are worse things that happen in the world. We have achieved a lot this year, we have improved, so there’s that to be looked at as well. But you can’t get too happy with the season when you get bailed out in the final again. There’s no doubt that we’re on the upward trend, and we’ve got a lot of talent in our team that can go the right way. But every team’s talented. It’s a matter of the mental side of the game . . . that you can cope with pressure and respond. We’ve never lost faith in the whole time that ‘Dimma’ (coach Damien Hardwick) has been here that we’d be a consistent finals side, and to play three finals in-a-row is a good effort in itself. But we want more. You don’t get prizes just for making the finals – you’ve got to win them.”

IMO this is where we keep going wrong. I dont believe for a second that the talent is there.I think this has been shown.
Like all sides we have some talent enough to be around the middle of the table, The question has to be Do we have enough?? Imo clearly not.
We have had players for years now who at their best pass muster but when at any level below their best they just drop away too much. We get sucked into wanting to keep them because they have played some good footy.
A few examples out of many to show what im saying.
Rance has become one of the better defenders in the comp and always performs at a consistent level. The next best tall defender we have is Chaplin and when things are going well he is okay. Too often like in an elimination final when put under pressure he falls to pieces. Take Rance away from the list and the backline is very ordinary and lacking talent. There is just too much reliance on Rance.
Riewoldt up forward. Then who?? Vickery!!!!!! the drop off is enormous.
Yep we have some talent in those areas as is evidenced by both Rance and Riewoldt but we just dont have enough.
We have our share of very good mids at the top end, but we drop away. some mids at their best are good enough but when beaten the drop off is too much. I think type of mids is just as much a part of the problem.
Look at big Ivan. A servicable player who always gives his all. Then what Hampson or Vickery it is laughable.
We have too many players who do perform to a decent level when everything is going well but it has been shown far too often when you really need them to stand up the most they will invariably let you down.
This caper is harsh but we need to make some hard calls on players if we want to go further.

Back: Rance, Deledio, Vlastuin, Grimes, Ellis, Ellis, Elton
Mid: Miles, Cotchin, Maric, Edwards, Martin, Lambert, Menadue
Fwd: Reiwoldt, McBean, Lennon, Vickery, Griffiths,
there is enough talent - IMHO
if you look at the turn around in Port [last year[, Saint + Dogs [recently], WCE [now] most teams can get pretty close, fast, if you tweak things correctly
Do you think a Clarkson or Horse would fail at Richmond, with the current group? or a couple additions and the current list. i doubt it

Yep Chaplin is a like a drunk homeless man
Deledio needs to be played back as Richmond is not good enough to have him in the middle/forward unfortunately, Vlastuin and Grimes are top shelf back they need a chop out
This caper is harsh but we need to make some hard calls on players if we want to go further.
Yep

September setback strengthens Tigers
AFL.com.au
February 1, 2016
Richmond has emerged from last year’s disappointing elimination final loss to North Melbourne with a steely determination to take the next step in its football journey this season.
The Tigers’ CEO Brendon Gale told SEN that notwithstanding the pain emanating from the defeat at the time, it’s subsequently been viewed as a valuable lesson for the team.
“It’s just hardened our resolve and narrowed our focus,” Gale said.
“I think we’ve got a very good, almost an acute understanding of, I guess, the manner in which we lose games, when we lose them.
“I know it’s probably a strange thing to say, but I think we walk away understanding what our deficiencies are.
“We will address those through the evolution of our list and through some players we’ve brought in . . .
“I think sometimes it’s those bitter experiences – those extremely painful experiences – that really do harden resolve and make you stronger going forward . . .
“We lost a game to a pretty good team in North Melbourne.
“We were a kick away up until a couple of minutes (remaining in the match), and we had a handful of guys, who almost had career-worst games. I’m not blaming them – I’m just making an observation.
“I’d almost submit, but for Damien (Hardwick) and his team’s coaching ability, and the game plan that got us that far, we might have been blown away.
“The trends were looking bad before half-time in that game . . .”

Hardwicks team coaching ability? I want some of whatever Benny's smoking.

Richmond must be the only club that has ever or will ever be more strengthened by repeated finals losses (as stated) than finals wins.
Perhaps the club needs more strengthening. Keep those losses coming Benny :clapping
