'I let the boys down', Cotchin left flat after loss

RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin says he let his teammates down in Sunday's elimination final and didn't do his job after being tagged out of the match by North Melbourne opponent Ben Jacobs.
Cotchin, who has been so crucial to the Tigers' drive into finals, finished with just nine possessions and one clearance in a game where his team was crying out for a contested ball presence.
The nine possessions were the equal-lowest he has ever recorded in his 153-game career.
Shattered and "empty" after his team's immediate finals exit for the third straight season, Cotchin vowed to return in 2016 "ready to take it to any opposition we come across".
"It starts at the top and with me. I let the boys down," Cotchin said.
"As captain you want to be there at the coalface winning the ball for your team. That's my job and I didn't perform that today.
"Credit to Jacobs, he was fantastic all day. He didn't give me an inch of space. He also got plenty of help from his teammates.
"One thing I'll take out of the game is I'll be back again next year ready to take it to any opposition we come across."
Cotchin said the Tigers needed to reflect on their individual performances on Sunday and take ownership of them after being outplayed in the contested situations.
"It's moments where you pick and choose, you're not able to do that in AFL footy. It's a tough game," he said.
"The reality is a team came out that little bit hungrier today.
"We gave ourselves an opportunity and let ourselves down with contested footy and clearances.
"The challenge for us is to get back on the horse over pre-season and come back bigger and better."
Asked if his teammates offered him enough support on Sunday, Cotchin said: "They did early. There's different moments in games where they can give you a chop out and there's different moments where you have to tell them to stick to their role".
Coach Damien Hardwick, who delivered a thunderous post-match address to his players, said players could only help so much when a star teammate was being tagged.
"He's a quality player. It doesn't happen often. It happened today and he'll learn from it, he'll bounce back," Hardwick said of Cotchin.
"Could we have helped him out more? The tape will give the answer to that and I'll have a look at that as well. We probably could have."
Jacobs, who finished with nine possessions and eight tackles, kept Cotchin to two possessions in each of the final three quarters.

Hooray!!! Someone finally telling it how it is.
Yes you did Cotch, yes you did!!
-
Get over it princess.
What, McCaffer last year and Jacobs gave you a touch up?
Poor baby too bad your mum aint Lachie Henderson's from Carlton.
Maybe she'd ring the AFL and tell Uncle Gill the other kids are playing too rough in the playground.
You kicked 5 and had a blinder against the might of St.Kilda last year.

Real leaders don't play the 'Pity PR card' at all.
-
Make Rance captain and decrease his jumper number by 1. :clapping

RFC = a sheltered workshop

It's called appealing to the simpletons.
If he comes out and tokenly takes ownership of his failure it appeases the masses at the very least for recognising his failure and talking about it. Much like an employee at work during an appraisal or a couple domestically dealing with everyday issues.
In footy however. Actions speak louder than words. 2013/14/15. Cut the crap Trent and RFC. :-\

Let us all down I would have thought not just the "boys"

I understand Doc but we'll end up like Geelong in the mid 90's after so many captains passed the baton because they could not handle the pressure. Finals defeats in our case or Grand Finals defeats in their case do that to a footy club.
Cotch needs to learn and work through it and succeed.

You, the team, the club let US all down today.
No carefully scripted speech will paper over the cracks that you and your team mates are mentally weak.
You and your team mates and coaches have brought this upon yourselves.
you and your coifed hair, FFS harden up or get out.
-
Understatement of the year.
-
Well Trent it's too late now, we lost, go tell someone else about your next year poo. I don't want to hear it at the moment!

Thought about these comments by Cotchin
What I find interesting is yet again when things are crap or he has had a crap game he only ever speaks about letting the "boys down"; his teammates down.
he never (and will stand corrected if someone can show differently) says he let the club, its members or fans down.
Why?
Just think it's time for Cotchin to start directing some of the apologies our way and rather than just to "the boys"
He along with the club owes us the paying members & fans an apology for yesterday pathetic effort

WP
Spot on
-
Someone needs to get hold of the young man and tell him what he is doing wrong. Sometimes they are not doing it intentionally but are so enclosed in their own cocoon that they can't see the bigger picture.
-
After stewing on it overnight Cotchin can go and EAD.
-
Looked like he played in allot of pain, came off 10 mins in the first quarter and hobbled around the bench looking like he could hardly breath!
Shouldn't have played on what I seen >:(
