Adam Marcon
DOB: 28/07/1992
Recruited from: Williamstown
Height: 180cm
Weight: 80kg
Position: Midfield
What the Richmond recruiters say:
Marcon has followed the same path as one of last year’s rookies in Kane Lambert.
Starting with the Northern Knights in 2009 as an inside midfielder, he was not picked up in his draft year of 2010.
He pushed on with three successful years with the Northern Blues in the VFL, from 2011-13.
He also represented the VFL at State League level in 2013 and 2014.
Marcon made the switch to the Williamstown Football Club in 2014, and was a member of their premiership side in 2015.
He averaged 23 disposals and eight tackles per game, while also hitting the scoreboard with 13 goals.
It has been a credit to his drive and perseverance to be rewarded with an AFL list spot in 2016, with his work ethic and impact at State level too hard to ignore.

Agreed, been watching this kid on Foxtel a bit. Like the look of him!

Have actually heard of this bloke. Even if he never makes it he will at least be a decent addition to the VFL side.
-
nickname is 'Barlow' apparently

Ok pick I guess...would've preferred a kid though...

unless his name is jake bachelor

From the vids he seems to have good hands and balance in the wet. But its only a video. Id like to see him at AFL pace and space. Dunno if he'll hold up.
-
Will need to play out of his ring to get a game , a lot of comp building for remaining mid spots and that's healthy :clapping

'Bromance' between Adam Marcon and Kane Lambert reignited at Richmond
Brent Diamond
The Age
29 November 2015
It could almost be deemed a fairytale bromance, but the story of new Richmond rookie Adam Marcon and first-year Tiger Kane Lambert ending up at the same club is "not something you would even dream about", says Lambert.
The two mature-age recruits have been side-by-side, since playing alongside each other at Preston in their junior footy and cricket days.
They have both endured a journey of persistence and determination – unwithered by the prospect of missing out – but with the purpose to succeed at the sport they love.
"They're brothers from a different mother, their friendship is something that have driven each other to the best they can," Williamstown premiership coach Andy Collins said.
"It's a special relationship of great mates that have really pushed each other to be as good as they can. That story should have some great chapters to write for the Richmond footy club."
For Marcon, after three years at the Northern Blues – one of which was a career-best season, finishing with the Coaches Award on Liston Trophy night – the decision to cross to Williamstown, where he would spend more time in the midfield and in the eyes of AFL recruiters in 2014, was a defining moment.
Lambert made the same call – crossing from the Carlton affiliate, where the Preston flavour was beginning to fade – to the stand-alone Seagulls for the sake of his dream. They were both born and bred Preston, played for the Northern Knights under then coach Denis Pagan – who is an unabashed fan of the duo – and VFL feeder team, the previously named Northern Bullants. Ultimately, they had both become Fothergill-Round Medallists for the best Under 23 player in the VFL; an award that has become a guide to mature age recruits given past recipients include Fremantle's Michael Barlow, Sydney's Dean Towers and North's Robin Nahas.
Marcon's father Adrian, who introduced his son to the sport after migrating from Italy, was a cult figure at the Bullants, winning two VFA flags in the 1980s.
It was a controversial call for Marcon and Lambert to cross clubs, as the Seagulls were heavily under fire from the Blues hierarchy for poaching their star on-ballers.
"It wasn't a decision which was made lightly … we had plenty of discussion but we just thought Williamstown would be a good fit for us and things worked out the way we wanted them to," Lambert said.
"We have no regrets of what happened."
Collins believes "the ability to play your best position week-in and week-out at a stand-alone team is really advantageous to being drafted."
Ironically, Carlton plucked Williamstown premiership goalsneak Andrew Galluci as a rookie, perhaps recognising the stand-alone team as a top breeder of young talent. There were many other premiership Seagulls, who could have joined them on Friday; Mitch Banner, Michael Gibbons, Jack Johnstone and Jack Charleston to name a few.
Marcon, a PE teacher at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar, was teaching a class when his name was called out by the Tigers with the No.47 pick. Lambert was quick to congratulate him – but it was a good time for himself to reflect on how far he has come after being upgraded to Richmond's senior list after playing in an AFL elimination final.
"I suppose there were times where you thought your time was up and maybe you weren't going to get the opportunity, but whatever level we were playing, we wanted to play the best footy we could," Lambert said.
"We're just lucky that Richmond have seen something in us and we have the opportunity now," he said.
"The reality is I've got to get better and hopefully we can improve on our season ahead."
He reckons it won't be long for Marcon – who averaged 22 disposals and seven tackles a game for the Seagulls this season – to show his full potential.
"He's always had a professional attitude with the way he goes about his footy. He did all the work post hours. It's going to be interesting to see what he can do in a full-time environment."
And he will have his familiar side-kick with him doing laps and drills once again, as he did when he was at Cramer Street Oval.
"That's the way it's sort of been over the last few years. With a year under my belt, I'll be able to help him out and tell him what to expect but he'll find his feet quickly," he said.
Collins, who has recently re-signed for a further two seasons as Williamstown coach, said Marcon's development over the past 12 months has been outstanding.
"To learn new skills, not only offensive, but defensive skills, he ran with some great players this year," he said.
The Tigers also recognised Marcon's intensity and smart use of the ball.

Finally, Marcon makes his mark with Tigers
AFL.com.au
29 November 2015
NEW RICHMOND rookie Adam Marcon says persistence and a constant desire to get better is why he's finally landed on an AFL list after five years of being overlooked.
The 23-year-old Williamstown midfielder was first eligible for the NAB AFL, Pre-season and Rookie Drafts in 2010, but missed out after playing for the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup.
He said it had been hard to deal with being rejected multiple times by the AFL pool, but he had simply tried to stay hungry as he embarked on a VFL career.
"There definitely has been some ups and downs," Marcon told SEN on Sunday.
"I guess the one thing I always kept in the back of my mind was to just make sure I was continually improving and learning.
"I never wanted to stagnate or just stay at the same level I'd been playing at.
"Luckily enough, I always had the drive to keep getting better and hopefully that's something that holds me in good stead at Richmond as well.
"Six drafts later, I've finally got my crack. It's been a few watched drafts with nothing happening, so it was nice to finally get a result."
Marcon played for the Northern Blues from 2011-13, and has been with the Seagulls for the past two seasons.
He said Williamstown coach Andrew Collins helped develop his game defensively and encouraged him to bring more teammates into the play, which increased his chances of finally earning an AFL gig.
He hasn't let life pass him by while waiting for this opportunity, having started at Keilor's Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School as a PE and health teacher this year.
He was at work on Friday morning when the draft was held, and was watching it live in the office with a few of his colleagues when his name was called at No.47.
"Funnily enough, they're Richmond supporters so there was a few screams and shouts when the name came out," he said.
"It was a crazy day, that's for sure.
"I'm very lucky they're very understanding and also aware it could have ended up like this.
"The school have been extremely supportive and they've really looked after me."
Marcon met briefly with Richmond coach Damien Hardwick on Friday afternoon and will be given more of an understanding of the club's expectations of him next week.
For now, he just wants to emulate what his former Northern Blues and Seagulls teammate Kane Lambert achieved in his first year as a Tiger – 13 AFL games after being picked up as a rookie 12 months ago.
"It's something I've always had my eye on – to be part of that 24/7 environment," he said.
"I'm aware that the hard work starts now and everything is in the past and I'm starting afresh.
"I'm looking forward to getting down to work and improving a lot and being a really integral part of Richmond.

Adam Marcon, Kane Lambert set to continue partnership at Richmond
Sarah Olle
FOX SPORTS
December 1, 2015
IT MIGHT not be the most famous of football partnerships, but it’s certainly one of the most enduring.
From Auskick to the Northern Knights to the Northern Blues to Williamstown, Adam Marcon and Kane Lambert have tended to be a two-for-one deal.
And now the pair have another chapter to add to their ongoing partnership, with Marcon joining Lambert at Richmond, after the former was taken with pick No. 47 in Friday’s rookie draft.
And it was Lambert’s own AFL journey — he was taken by the Tigers just one selection earlier in last year’s rookie draft — that gave Marcon the self-belief that he could also make it as a mature age player.
“I think what Kane Lambert has done this year at Richmond shows that you can make the change from VFL footy,” Marcon told SEN on Sunday.
“I know that there are many great VFL footballers out there who deserve to get drafted.”
And eight of them did this year, with four players taken in the national draft and another four in the rookie draft.
Richmond’s recruiting manager Francis Jackson says the Tigers were attracted to Marcon’s determination.
“Once again, this is a win for perseverance,” Jackson said.
“I just thought Adam had done everything to justify a position on an AFL list. He’s worked tirelessly and it’s just reward.
“He played 19 VFL games with Williamstown this year, I think he averaged 23 touches, eight tackles a game, and he worked really hard.
“I’m delighted to add him to our list because it’s thoroughly deserved.”
From Williamstown to Richmond, Adam Marcon and Kane Lambert have been reunited. Photo: Kris Reichl
Marcon starred in Williamstown’s premiership team this year and he was rewarded with the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFL’s most promising player.
His elevation means the past 10 winners of this award have gone onto graduate into AFL ranks after Lambert won it in 2013.
Marcon, a PE teacher at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar, was at school when his AFL dream was finally realised, some five years after his first draft attempt in 2010.
“I was watching it live in the office with a few of the colleagues, who are funnily enough Richmond supporters,” Marcon said.
“There were a few screams and a few shouts when the name came out at 47.
“I love my teaching and I love my footy.”
And while Marcon says he’ll take his teacher’s hat off at Richmond, the 23-year-old credits his success to his ongoing desire to learn.
It’s a mantra he would have hoped to instil in his students, but ultimately one which allowed his insatiable AFL dream to stay alive in the face of perpetual setbacks.
“I just had to make sure I was continually improving and continually learning, I didn’t want to stagnate,” Marcon said.
“Luckily enough I always had the drive to get better and hopefully that will hold me in good stead at Richmond.
“I’m lucky enough to have been coached by Andrew Collins who’s done so much with me defensively.
“All those little strings you can add to your armour is what’s allowed me to get this chance.”
Adam Marcon has finally realised his AFL dream. Picture: David Smith
Lambert is not the only influence on Marcon’s career.
His father, Adrian, was a cult figure at Preston, where he won back-to-back flags in the 1980s.
And while Marcon hasn’t styled his own game on his father’s — who, in his own words was “more a high-flying goal sneak” — he has inherited his desire to learn.
“He follows my game extremely closely and gives me a lot of great feedback, both positive and constructive,” Marcon said.
“I think his ability to keep me learning and improving is something that has driven me to get to this point.
“I couldn’t have done it without him to be honest.”

Great to see we are giving state league players who perform at a high standard a go.Most will never be guns but instead become decent foot soldiers which is more than you ever get from most junior rookie picks.
My only gripe is his size how many small players do we need, but thats a different issue altogether. I wonder if we had any one looking at Sam Menegola.A188cm 90kg inside mid who absolutely blitzed the wafl this year.
-
Didn't you say before that we should take kids in the rookie draft?
-
Nelson > Marcon, Cameron > Chol :shh

Didn't you say before that we should take kids in the rookie draft?
Illuminati. Or just Claw (and plenty of others) wanting to disagree with whatever the club does
-
Didn't you say before that we should take kids in the rookie draft?
I dont believe i have ever advocated we take just kids in the rookie or nd draft. Hence for how long now have i carried on about state league players.
I believe i am one poster who has never had a problem wanting us to take 29 plus yr olds at trade time to go with younger trades.
I have regularly advocated we take a Balance of juniors and mature types.
Players i have advocated we look at this yr , Adams 22yo, Cameron 21yo, Menegola 24yo, Hartley 22yo steve johnson 32 yo.Keefe 25yo and i have missed a few.
I have constantly said i dont have a problem taking mature players just as long as we take our fair share of kids every year.
-
I'm not sure we're te humour comes into it
Do you think we will win a flag with them two spuds?
I think we could carry Grigg. Chaplin, no probably not. Too slow to play as an effective loose and too average to be a good key defender but at the time being we have no other options. If he were younger it could be okay but he is likely to go down hill at a rate of knots. Who was it that was against getting this guy while everyone lapped it up?
-
Wtf
Have a cup of tea and try again
-
Wtf
Have a cup of tea and try again
Instead of being dismissive why don't you put forward a counter argument? And no, saying "Conca > Grigg" or "Grigg, chaplin = spuds" isn't good enough
-
I don't understand you
We did/do have options
-
Any good ones? Because just plonking Elton there is useless if you want to win the cup, let alone a final
-
Astbury's view of Adam Marcon:
He’s been absolutely tremendous so far. Right from the outset, we got a pretty good understanding that he’s just a quality person. As it shows, perseverance has really paid off for him and he’s really improved in a lot of facets of his game. Adam’s an extraordinary worker, a really diligent person and we love having him down at the Club. He’s going to get every opportunity this pre-season to stick his hand up for Round 1 selection. And, so far, all that we’ve seen, we there’s no reason why he can’t. He’s been really strong throughout.

Marcon on his first game in Y&B:
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2016-02-20/nab-challenge-1-marcon-postmatch
13 disposals (8k, 5h, 6cp, 7up, 77% eff.)
3 centre clearances
5 tackles
3 inside 50s
1 goal
-
He seemed quick, good disposer and made a few smart moves. A definite prospect for the 22.
-
Yeah looked good, would keep him in to get used to the pace, come round one he could be primed.
-
He surprised me , my expectations are about as high as a scratchie ticket with this pick , so far well ahead and I'd expect would look much better with some qty around him
-
Marcon talking about his first hit-out in Y&B:
* It was an extremely intense game. I thought for my first hit-out I did okay with some things to work on. My role was more so through the midfield as a rover, as well as changing out on the wing.
* It’s a great experience for a lot of us younger players to come up against what has been a top-four side for a very long time now. I think we all got a lot out of the game. We learned a lot about our own game and we’re all going to be better off for the experience.
* It’s great just to be around everyone - the support staff and the coaches. You just spend that extra bit of time together. It’s great to learn off some of the older guys about when to eat, what to eat, when to go to bed, what to do during the day. So, it was definitely a great experience.
* Everything’s a little bit quicker, you’ve got a little bit less time with the ball and obviously the blokes you’re playing on are that bit better as well. Hopefully, it’s not going to take me too long to adjust. I’m extremely grateful for the experience and, hopefully, I might get another one next week.

Richmond’s mature-age midfield recruit Adam Marcon has received a promotion from the Club’s rookie list to the senior list.
Marcon, who turned 24 today, was the Tigers’ third pick (No. 47 overall) in the AFL rookie draft held late last year.
He has maintained a high level of performance at VFL level with Richmond over the course of this season, winning plenty of ball and generating considerable drive for the team through the midfield.

How about we give him a go until he becomes yet another whipping boy for the forum ferrals.
-
Hopefully he gets a run in the guts where he plays his best footy - or will dimma shuffle him to a fwd pocket/half foward like lambert.
Id like to see lambert and marcon given a fair go in the guts for a while to see whether theyre good enough to consider being part of a midfield rotation moving fwd. Lambert is a contested beast but you wouldnt know it as we play him outside on a half forwad flank for goodness sakes

Actually he started on the wing but had to push back because your mate Hampson threw the ball. I know you hate having players in the defensive half but it's actually a good thing if your wingmen push back in defence when we don't have the ball :thumbsup

Going very well so far tonight.

Tiger Adam keen to make mark on mature-age prospects
AFL.com.au
6 August 2016
MATURE-AGE recruit Adam Marcon is using his chance at the top level to inspire other players to keep dreaming after making his Richmond debut in round 19.
Marcon is the latest of the mature-age brigade in the AFL to make his debut, with his big day coming at 24 and after being overlooked for five years.
And while the game's elite can inspire young players to reach for the stars, Marcon's message is equally important for teenagers and state-league players alike who want to reach the top level.
"I went back to the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup earlier this year for their jumper presentation and spoke a little bit about my journey," Marcon told AFL.com.au.
"Realistically a lot of those guys won't get their crack through the draft and they might have to go through the AFL.
"So I just talk to them about my journey and hopefully that inspired them to keep going on to VFL if they don't get picked up.
"If I can inspire just one to go on and reach their dream then that'll make me very happy."
Marcon's dream was to run out with best mate Kane Lambert in an AFL match and that was achieved against Greater Western Sydney last Saturday.
It was a brief moment of joy before what turned into a horror day for the Tigers and ended in an 88-point thumping.
"It's probably always been a joint dream for me and him," Marcon said.
"So it was really satisfying to run out beside him and we loved the experience.
"We've done a lot of our training and been through a lot of hard roads together."
The hard roads for Marcon and Lambert – a fellow mature-age rookie recruited at the end of 2014 – included draft after draft being overlooked for younger players.
To keep fronting up in the VFL with a goal to achieve was a challenge, but he was inspired by players who had done it before him.
"I was playing with the Northern Blues in my first year and I played with (former St Kilda forward) Ahmed Saad for a year and he got picked up," Marcon said.
"That showed me it was possible. I remember when he got picked up I had a really strong pre-season and a good year in 2012.
"So that was the start of things where I thought 'the dream's not over, I've still got a chance here'.
"I was extremely thankful to have played a year with Ahmed and see what he put into his footy. That really inspired me to keep going."
Now Marcon is providing advice of his own to VFL players, and particularly Williamstown midfielder and former VFL teammate Michael Gibbons, who looks set to earn his AFL chance after a standout season.
"He is one who's standing out this year and playing some really good footy," Marcon said.
"Playing with him last year, I've kept in touch with him throughout this year to give him a little bit of advice and just talk about how he's going.
"He's playing some pretty good footy, so the advice goes both ways."

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.
“The big thing with our list strategy is we had a really good draft last year.
“So those players will come on this year. Corey Ellis didn’t play a lot, Connor Menadue, Nathan Drummond will come through.
“Then we added Chris Yarran as a ready-made player and Andrew Moore and Jacob Townsend. We are pretty happy with our build over 24 months.”

Made some shocking mistakes that directly impacted on gifting Collingwood goals
Thought his last 10 minutes was very good
Improved on last week but that was never going to be difficult because last week he was so far off AFL standard it was embarrassing at times
Depth player at best, certainly not the future.
Would only keep in 2017 as rookie doesnt deserve a senior kist spot IMHESHO
-
Funny how we all see things differently and see the players differently. I thought Hampson and Marcon and a few others would cop the same criticism they do weekly so I payed particular attention to the panel calling the game last night and what they said. Seems they thought Marcon had a very good game and also Hampson, also how Hampson had a "great" year..... anyway.

Hamspud is rubbish but I'd like to give marcon more than 2 games before judging him - thought he was good last night

Improved on last week but that was never going to be difficult because last week he was so far off AFL standard it was embarrassing at times
Nah, WAT already disproved Dio's theory of last week being a VFL level game at best

I agree he can play, but were you watching the right bloke? Adam played for Preston/Knights/Northern Bullants-Blues/then Willy.

Not sure how Jack saw him play at PEGs when he was a PE teacher there. :lol

“I’ve been put through a number of different roles in the VFL . . . I’ve played inside mid and now on the wing, and also a bit of half-forward,” Marcon said.
“I guess these days you have to have that little bit of versatility. And, luckily enough, (Richmond VFL coach) Craig McRae and (Richmond development coach) Andrew McQualter have done really well to make me a more versatile player.”
Marcon’s aim for the rest of season 2016 is straightforward, but totally in keeping with his dedicated approach to the game.
“Hopefully, just keep improving. Train well this week, hopefully, put my hand up again for the next game and, hopefully, play a little bit better than today. And that process continues. I’m just trying to get better each day,” he said.

Adam Marcon celebrates first AFL victory at Richmond, will receive hero’s welcome at PEGS

IT’S not often you’ll find too many happy faces at a high school on a Monday morning.
But it will be a different scenario at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar this week, following Richmond’s upset victory over Collingwood at the MCG.
Tigers midfielder Adam Marcon, who teaches one day a week at the school, played in his first senior win on Friday night and was clearly delighted in the rooms after the game.
“It feels absolutely amazing,” Marcon told foxfooty.com.au.
“It’s crazy, the difference between a win and a loss. It’s the best sport in the world when you win. I don’t think I’ve ever felt anything like this.
“There might be a few messages and stuff like that from the boys out at PEGS. They’ll be nice and happy, especially if they’re Richmond supporters.”
Marcon, 24, was drafted as a mature-aged rookie last year. He was teaching physical education at the school when he was told the news he’d be heading to the AFL.
On Wednesday, he will return to PEGS, where he is likely to receive a hero’s welcome.
The former Northern Blues and Williamstown midfielder finished Friday night’s victory with 22 disposals and a goal, booting his first ever major late in the opening term.
“It was crazy,” Marcon beamed. “Luckily enough, I was in the goal square and I didn’t have to think too much. Hopefully there’s a few more of them to come.”
Marcon averaged 23 disposals and eight tackles per game in the VFL last season to finally earn his spot on a senior AFL list.
However, he revealed he’d had doubts about whether his dream would come true and said he never thought he’d be playing in a winning side on a Friday night at the MCG.
“I always hoped and dreamt, but at times it seemed a little bit too far away,” Marcon said.
“It’s nice to have finally got the first win on the board.”
Richmond’s 14-point victory followed a week where the entire club faced scrutiny, from the board, to the coach, to the list.
Marcon said the team used the criticism as motivation to inspire their eighth win of the year.
“We knew there was a lot of external noise, but internally we were really confident,” he said.
“We’re a very proud football club, so we knew if we came out and played our best footy we’d get a result. It was massive and very important for us tonight.
“We were just about focusing on the task at hand and focusing on Collingwood and what we could control. We didn’t worry too much about that stuff.
“To an extent, we used it as a motivating force, but we just got on with the business.”
