Lids' press conference today ...
VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-11-27/deledio-press-conference-november-27th
Brett Deledio didn’t stew over Richmond’s third elimination final defeat in a row but the Tigers star agrees preventing another swift AFL finals exit will motivate many of his teammates in 2016.
A season of such promise ended abruptly at the hands of North Melbourne, but Richmond took their first step towards putting the pain of that defeat behind them on Friday when they gathered for the first training session of their pre-season campaign at Punt Road.
“Some blokes will probably be motivated by that more than others,” Deledio said.
“Other guys will just look to motivate themselves by striving to get as good as we can and win that ultimate prize.
“It’s something that will always be there but I’m certainly not stewing over it.
“We’ll learn from it and move on.”
--------
“I’ve had all my bags packed and my clothes all laid out ready to go. So, I’m a bit nervous, a bit excited,” he said.
“It’s always good to get back with the boys and start preparing for a new season . . .
“I’ve met the new kids already. They presented really well . . . came up, shook my hand and said hello, which is good.”
Deledio is confident the three players Richmond recruited from rival league clubs during the off-season – Chris Yarran (Carlton), Andrew Moore (Port Adelaide) and Jacob Townsend (GWS) – will provide the Tigers with a significant boost moving forward.
“They’re great additions. They’re stronger bodies and we’ve all seen what ‘Yazman’ (Yarran) can do with the footy,” he said.
“I’m excited to play with those boys and looking forward to what they bring to our side.”
Deledio, who missed five games in 2015 due to a calf injury, but still managed to finish third in the Club’s Best and Fairest, and gain selection in the All-Australian team, will take a more cautious approach as he prepares for his 12th season of AFL football.
“As you get older you’ve just got to look after yourself a bit more . . . you’re not doing everything like you used to when you were first on the scene,” he said.
“I’ll be in constant discussions with our fitness guys and our medical staff. They’ll hold me in good stead, I think, to get myself ready and raring to go for 2016.
“I’ve got no issues at all, had no surgery or anything like that, so just been completing my program over the off-season and feel really good.”

Rance is apparently still on an extended break due to "personal reasons"....hope he's not having second thoughts again...
-
Treloar star struck. Lol

I think that was part of his contract agreement. If they wanted him to stay playing AFL, he'd have shorter preseasons. Will see if it repeats again in a year.
-
Correct, Rance gets an extended break part of his contract - comes back January iirc
-
If that's the case he should be docked half his salary if he returns in poor condition. No training pre Christmas, what is this stuffing Div 4 country footy.
-
How long before other blokes start asking ..."Well if Rance can have extra time off, why can't we?"? Slippery slope if you ask me...
-

That's already happened. He signed up for half of what he was being offered elsewhere.....

Don't be ridiculous. He is on big coin at Richmond.

He is not on anywhere near what Freo offered him so I'm not being ridiculous at all. He should be on $900K with two all Australians in a row and clearly our best player. He is on $600K. Free offered him close to $1 million. Not quite double but close.
-
Please. It's ridiculous to suggest he signed on for half of what he was offered elsewhere which is what you originally did. And I have contacts at Freo so don't even try, you don't know what he was offered.
Should be on 900k give me a break. He probably was our best player last year but Cotchin, Riewoldt & Deledio have done far more over the course of their careers and none of them ask for an extra 3 months off

Where did you pull 3 months from ? Clearly your date
Players returned during the week & break for xmas in 3 weeks, they then return in January along with Rancey, at worst he misses 4 weeks FFS

We finish in September, he returns in January. You're right, that's 4 months away not 3.

As you are clearly not interested in a factual discussion , I will leave you to entertain yourself

On the other hand, if he comes back refreshed, is fit by the the start of the season and has a good year it may show that the excessive work load is counter productive?
only time will tell.

You clearly stated an extra 3 months off. When you take the Christmas break into account, it's barely 4 weeks extra leave. Hardly something that the club would baulk at if it meant signing him, especially for unders.

FTR, I shouldn't have said extra 3 months. I meant how long he'd be getting off in total compared to our best players (Lids Cotch Jack) and everyone else on the list really. My mistake
Though you blokes are kidding yourself if you don't think the players have an issue with how much longer he gets off. Sorry, but they return in November and he returns in January. That's a much longer break whatever way u want to spin it

who knows. would be good to havethe entire group was together pre-christmas though IMO. I don't think anyone should be considered above the rest of the team even if he is a star player.
-
the best thing rance can do in the offseason is convert grigg so we dont have to see him for another 2 months

agree, dont like the one rule for some and another for others.
(bit like how one person can post something but another cannot quote that post without the censors kicking in, here)
I do wonder, though, if you maintain some semblance of fitness, how long does it take to get up to max fitness? surely 10-12 weeks is enough?
Is starting pre season before christmas actually counter productive rather than beneficial, in the longer term?
-

better than doing what the bible tells him to and going out and killing some muslims?

It's hard to say what the best start date truly is. If only there was someone here who knows, someone to enlighten us. maybe a doctor?
-
I'm just sitting on the fence here so not taking a side, but is he not only missing 3 or 4 weeks more than the rest of the group? He would have only gone back to train with the rest of the older group this week and they all break up again for Christmas anyway. If he's professional enough he will keep up some sort of personal training regime that I'm sure would be worked out with the club fitness staff. I don't mind if that's the case, but if he does come back underdone then he can get stuffed ;D

So barely over 3 weeks extra leave that the senior group agreed to is a problem for you? Seriously, what are you going on about? Sure in the ideal world everyone has the same conditions. But no one is on the same pay either yet we all accept that. It meant that Rance stayed at Richmond and if that was the price it took to keep him, it was a damn good bargain!
-
Barely over 3 weeks leave lol. He finished playing in September and won't return until January. As far as I know, every single player in the AFL apart from Rance returns in November. But hey who cares right, it's not unusual or unfair on the other boys.

I said barely over 3 weeks extra leave. Not Total leave!

About 2/3rds of all press conferences are PR orchestrated by the corporate affairs dept of the organisation

Actual there is one other AFL player who gets extra time and that is Nick Riewoldt
He doesn't return to preseason until mid January. Being doing it a couple of years now. Gets extra time because his wife is from the USA
Also, it was well documented that Geelong over the years have given their older players extra time off, ditto Hawthorn more recently
So it's not a new thing as such.
-
I'll also reiterate that players are all on different pay packets. Different working conditions is just another difference. Senior players ticked off with this too. So although not ideal, it's quite acceptable.
-
Geelong never had blokes return in January. Richmond have opened up Pandora's box, Shaun Grigg no longer has to do boxing/weights and certain time trials prior to Xmas. It's cool, he's got that in his contract and senior players ticked off on it as did Peggy
-

bless you my son, bless you

People can focus on it "only" being 3-4 weeks extra. But in the grand scheme of things he is spending a great amount of time away from a professional environment. How long until thinking "gee wiz I may skip this last sprint" turns into "I'm skipping this training session and having a burger".
Pre season isn't about returning back to your old fitness level, it's about pushing beyond that to be better. Let's wait and see if he makes as many contests this year
-
Would you all prefer he retired from football? I can tell you that that was a serious and real alternative.
-
don't need you to tell me he was considering retirement, it was all over the news. but yeah if he said i'm retiring unless you give me an extra month off, he could get stuffed. however i dont think it went down like that
-
Would you all prefer he retired from football? I can tell you that that was a serious and real alternative.
Oh really? Man I didn't know that, it changes everything. Thanks for the inside info. Although I'd like it to be sourced otherwise secret information like that could get OER into trouble ::)
-
It may have not gone down in those words.
How about "I'm really considering giving up the game because it is consuming my entire life. I don't want more money. If I did I would take the offer from Freo. If there was a way I could get a better balance between my outside life and footy life I'd love that option".
RFC response "Would you consider some more time off in the preseason? How about we give you an extra month off? That way you'll have a straight 3 to 4 months off football and can rejoin us in the New Year."
Rance's reply: "As long as the boys think that's alright I'll seriously consider that as an option."
Later on…. RFC, "The leadership group has accepted the proposed changes to your playing contract and are willing to allow this to happen. They believe you are a vital cog in the team and do not want to lose you."
Rance, "Where do I sign?"
Maybe just a scary reenactment of what actually happened... :shh

thanks caro

Grigg is a complete ad utter hack
Rance is top ten in afl
Not really apples ad apples.
-
Grigg is great and is highly regarded
-
He's not great
What a stupid comment
