FORMER Fremantle tagger Ryan Crowley has been locked in as Essendon's first top-up player.
Signing with the Bombers gives Crowley a shot at finishing his career on a better note after he spent his final season at Freo on the sidelines serving a 12-month suspension for taking a prohibited painkiller in July 2014.
Essendon has until March 15 to sign the remaining top-up players, but the Dons have already drawn up a list of about 20 players and are expected to announce more signings soon.

-
LOL
Will fit right in

Good luck to him.
Got caught, did the time, no whinging.
Hope he has a good year and hits 200 games.
Even Crowley could teach essendrug a thing or two about decency and integrity.

Better than grigg and Houli
I would think that Essendon would love to have Houli back right about now.
Would also think that Houli thanks Allah every day that he escaped that shamble of a footy club.

talk of Matty Dea being their 3rd Top Up player

Yep, according the the RFC fans page on facebook.

he was crap anyway true dimwit. Newman was a much better player throughout the last 3 years.
-
...and you'd have to pretty damn crap for Newman to be a much better player...
-
Apparently they've got a new mystery top-up recruit up their sleeves that will turn quite a few heads...

If the AFLPA and AFL fund a trip to the NFL for training, they are sending them to a place where banned substances are rife and the players cannot be tested by ASADA. Is that what they want? :gobdrop

FOOTBALL journeyman Jonathan Simpkin is set to continue his career at a fourth AFL club, with the ex-Hawthorn premiership midfielder poised to become an Essendon top-up player.

The Dons are going to be Dad's Army this year.
Matthew Stokes is their latest top up signing.
-
nice pic ;D
-
They'll be surprisingly yet entertainingly competitive. :snidegrin
-
Stokes, Kelly, Crowley.
Midfield will be competitive at least.
Need to see what they bring to the bookends though.
Honestly they shouldn't be allowed to have top-up players/remain competitive. Not fair to the rest of the AFL clubs...
-
I agree Andy but as if the afl were ever going to key it incapacitate "the money" totally.
It's as though all this rubbish time wasting was a smoke wall so that nobody would question the "top up" ruling.
I'm sure if we checked all rules regarding free agency and teams who found themselves in the position Essendon has, it would be once again ILEGAL !
-
Why is this top-up scheme suddenly all about making Effendung competitive? They have already benefitted greatly from 3 years of protection & delaying tactics after being suspiciously ultra competitive thanks to their cynical, clinical & systematic PED cheating!! They don't deserve the chance to be competitive!
Who cares if this filthy lying scumbag of a club can't win games with VFL players?
Not happy Jan! :thumbsdown

They are gettin stronger ffs

"I feel like I was playing some good footy last year, it was unfortunate to be let go by the Tigers," Dea told essendonfc.com.au.
"I definitely feel I’ve got a lot to offer, and I’m keen to keep that going here.
"I’ll just be putting my best foot forward and trying to get around the boys as much as I can and just be ready to go"
Dea had signed to play VFL football with Williamstown this year and so believed he had a decent fitness base on which to build into the NAB Challenge.

Starting to think Bombers will not finish bottom 2-3

They are getting some handy top up players and it will be interesting to see how they jell over a short period, but i wonder what would be said if by some freak chance they make the 8?

handy top up players ??? who fits that category , might be handy @ VFL level in a couple of cases but more suited to suburban footy the majority of them
most are washed up hacks, delisted & no one wanted them through either trade, as delisted free agents, PSD etc etc
Add to that not one of them has done an AFL standard pre season
they will still finish on bottom

I said handy not stars, IMO would prefer to have Crowley, Stokes or Kelly over Grigg.
They probably will finish near the bottom, just putting it out there.

Never write Essendon off - the bastards always manage to fall on their feet....

you are a sad, sad man.

Perhaps.
He's not much better than Kelly or stokes
Crowley >> grigg

Crowley got dumped because he is a one dimensional player and Freo thought it was a better team without him. Can't carry one trick ponies anymore.
Grigg contributed a handy 16 goals last year and has shown an ability to negate a player like Joel Selwood. Makes him a pretty handy "C" grader .
-
lol i want what you're on bro

No , Matty just disagreed with Stalins comment that 31 year old Crowley ( who hasn't played for a year) is superior to Shaun Grigg.
Maybe 2-3 years ago he was - but I seriously doubt he will be in 2016.
I hope players like C.Ellis and Menadue can eventually break into the team at the expense of a Grigg but I suspect the poor lads bodies won't hold up for a full season yet .

Essendon has signed its eighth top-up player in three weeks, with former Hawk Sam Grimley heading to Tullamarine after six seasons with the reigning premiers.
