Lions cut ties with ruckman McLaren
The Age
October 31, 2005 - 5:15PM
Brisbane has cut 2004 AFL grand final ruckman Dylan McLaren from its list, setting up the 23-year-old to be one of the most enticing prospects in December's pre-season draft.
McLaren played 46 games in five seasons with the Lions, 17 of them this year and 19 in 2004, including the club's three finals.
But he was a victim of Brisbane's ruck depth, as a third-choice ruckman behind Jamie Charman and Clark Keating this season.
The Lions also have Beau McDonald, who did not play a game this season with a knee injury, set to return to bolster their ruck depth next year.
Several clubs lacking ruck depth are expected to be keenly interested in McLaren, including Carlton, which holds the No.1 pick in the pre-season draft.
The Blues had to call on first-year player Chris Bryan to lead the ruck on several occasions this season, while Barnaby French was out injured.
Brisbane held onto three-time grand final player Brad Scott, defying speculation that he was set to be cut.
The Lions also upgraded rookies defender Josh Drummond and midfielder Marcus Allan.
Drummond impressed in 14 matches this season, after coming off the rookie list to replace long-term injury victim Richard Hadley.
Two Melbourne midfielders - Steven Armstrong and Chris Heffernan - are also likely to attract interest in the pre-season draft, after they were cut by the Demons.
Melbourne, which had already lost veteran midfielder Guy Rigoni to retirement, also delisted Luke Williams and Cameron Hunter ahead of Monday's deadline for clubs to lodge their lists to the AFL.
Carlton included Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin on its primary list, upgrading him after two seasons on the club's rookie list.
Setanta's younger brother Aisake O'hAilpin was retained for a second year on the rookie list.
The Blues also kept disgruntled veterans Matthew Lappin and Scott Camporeale on their list, although the off-contract Camporeale is almost certain to nominate for the pre-season draft.
Collingwood has officially off-loaded three members of its 2004 grand final side, with former Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin and Matthew Lokan cut from the Magpies list.
They joined Richard Cole in leaving the Pies, with Cole having already been traded to Essendon.
The Pies also cut Tom Davidson, who managed just one AFL game in 2004 before having his career destroyed by two major knee injuries.
Essendon retained both Paul Thomas and Justin Murphy, despite speculation at least one of them would be axed.
The Bombers have delisted eight players, including retiring ruckman Matthew Allan and defender Ted Richards, who was traded to the Swans.
Young St Kilda talls Nick Stone and Dylan Pfitzner joined tough half-forward Brent Guerra on the scrapheap.
Richmond added Alex Gilmour to its group of delisted players.
Gilmour was the Tigers' first pick in the 2003 draft, but he failed to play a senior game in two seasons on the list.
Premier Sydney and struggler Hawthorn made the most deletions from their lists, both losing nine players through a combination of trading, delisting and retirements.

We paid for going for a speculative type with a goodish pick instead of playing it safe.
Best of luck to Gilly for the future whatever that may be.

i have a feeling this will come back and haunt us

:santai have a feeling this will come back and haunt us
In what way X - do you think someone else will pick him up?
I think he will probably get rookied but I am not sure that he will get a spot on a senior list. In his defence he really struggled with overcoming injuries this season especially the ankle problem he had
I have to admit that I am not surprised by this - just had a feeling :-\
-
Surely were better off keeping him then Roach?
Something like 10 months younger, has had injury problems and fits the bill of Wallace's running game as a very good athlete!
Not happy about this at all! :banghead
-
Gilmour ALLEGEDLY (There you go WP :thumbsup) has a:
- Drinking problem
- Partying problem
- Gambling problem
- Attitude problem
So a few "wise" internet forums have suggested!
Sounds like his been a busy boy these past two years!
-
I think he will probably get rookied
Is that possibly with us WP?
-
Sympathies BG25 :'(
-
Seriously, whether he has thrown it away with excesses or not, this is a pretty sad situation for the kid. We made a lot of how young he was being bottom age and all that - maybe he was too young to leave home. Best of luck to him.
-
I knew someone would get the chop but not Gilly, he hasn't played a game and there are other players who should've gone before him eg Roach

Apparently Gilmour has a:

Yeah right - rumours :banghead (and that's all they are so the word allegedly wouldn't have gone a stray here from a legal perspective :thumbsup).
I think it would tough enough on the kid without rumours flying about that no-one can verify.
Is that possibly with us WP?
No idea on that score MT - but I think a lot of experts in the footy world reckon he is very talented so I think considering his age he might just get rookied

i just have a feeling he will come good, he had good skills, just wasnt mentally ready as he was too young and immature, not every young kids is a lids.
someone will draft him and he will possibly poo in our face.
i hope not , but they must have seen something in him to draft him 2 yrs ago

Well he was playing senior footy for the Tassie Devils in the VFL at 16 - I agree with you on his skills. Very skillful by hand or foot. Anyone who saw him at Box Hill this year on ANZAC day would know how skillful the kid is but (and I think it happened late in the Box Hill game) once he hurt his foot he never really got back to full fitness in 2005
So having said that my personal view is I think he really struggled with the fitness side of things especially overcoming injuries. Everytime he looked like he was getting himself right he'd hurt himself again, usually re-injuring the previous injury. That has to be a worry long term I would guess

Anyone got any goss on who we're going after in the PSD?

There's talk of Ben Haynes :help but that just shows how thin the PSD is looking from the names delisted:

From the first time I laid eyes on Gilmour on the footy field, I knew instantly that he would'nt make it as an AFL player, I guess I was proven correct in my analogy :thumbsup

Miller's explanation:
Meanwhile, Miller has explained the reasons behind the Club’s final player de-listing on the October 31 deadline of Tasmanian teenager Alex Gilmour.
“At season’s end, Alex had a discussion with Terry Wallace and he was given the opportunity to train through to the December list lodgment number three, just prior to the pre-season draft. Alex, unfortunately, chose not to participate and, therefore, was de-listed,” Miller said.
“It’s a difficult task to be drafted at just over 17 years of age as Alex was. He was the youngest player taken in the 2003 National Draft and while he produced some cameo performances of high quality, they were interspersed with some efforts that left a bit to be desired.
“Alex struggled to settle in, and his decision not to train with the Club during October-November, is perhaps reflective of the difficulties he faced in adjusting to the requirements of AFL football.

I have to say that I find it disappointing that the kid didn't take the 2nd chance that the Club was willing to give him.
Very strange :-\

The official word sounds a lot like what they said about McGrath, but i guess the difference between the two is that Gilly isn't lighting up bongs, instead he was lighting up his tab account by the sounds of it!
-
AFL footy requires total commitment, both physically and mentally, from each and every footballer. That's why its one of the toughest professional sports. I would say reading Miller's comments the required commitment wasn't there from Gilly as the reason he's been delisted rather than alleged unsubstanciated rumours posted on the net. Same goes for McGrath.

Agree WP. You'd of thought there would be some motivation to work hard to remain at Richmond given he grew up barracking for the Tigers.
We all know about Tucky last year working hard in the gym by himself during the off-season saved himself from the chop. The rest is history.

Saw this posted on Yellow & Black info about Alex Gilmour becoming a playing assistant coach :o in the Mercury newspaper in Tassie:

Robins Want Alex To Roar Like A Tiger
By Brett Stubbs
The Mercury (pg. 43)
19/01/2006
It's a long way from AFL club Richmond to the Southern Premier League's perennial battler Brighton but that is the path Alex Gilmour has chosen.
The former Richmond draftee has signed for this season as the Robins playing assistant coach under Garry Splan.
At 17, Gilmour was the youngest player taken in the 2003 draft at No. 21 overall after playing with the Tasmanian Devils and the Mariners.
He was cut after failing to play a senior game with the Tigers in two seasons.
The 19-year-old has aspirations of getting back to at least VFL level but it won't be with the Devils this season.
"When I signed up for Brighton, I said to [president] Leigh Gray, 'I am going to sign for one year because next year I might try to get back in the system over in Melbourne and play VFL or play VFL down here'," Gilmour said.
"But this year I just wanted a year away from the spotlight and play a bit of club footy."
Gilmour was coached by Danny Frawley and Terry Wallace at Richmond before being cut late last year.
"I was pretty flat when I got the news," he said.
"It was fairly late. I was probably one of the last to be delisted but life goes on. I have to open new doors and go from there."
Gilmour said he had overcome persistent ankle injuries and will be 100 per cent fit by season's start.
Gray said the 184cm, 75kg midfielder would be a major boost for the Robins, who did not win a Premier League game last season.
"We explained to Alex what our club was doing, where we wanted to go, how we planned on doing it and he wanted to jump on board," Gray said.
"He is certainly not scared of a challenge as far as jumping on board with the side that has been the wooden-spooner for the past two years."
Gray said the club remained realistic about its chances and was aiming at taking small steps forward first.
"We are certainly not talking about premierships, that is for sure," he said.
"As a club, we just wanted to be competitive and win a handful of games next season.
"If we can achieve that, we have done a pretty good job."
He said the club has also recruited former DOSA brothers Matthew and Rick Honey and Smithton player Matthew Clark.
"The numbers at pre-season training are good and certainly up on last year," he said.
"There is a real buzz around the club with the guys we've picked up. Everyone is keen to get stuck in but unfortunately we have to wait for April."

They are probably the team that offered him the most money!

We lost out going with a speculative choice at #21 but picked up Tuck, Hartigan and Raines in the 70s. The other 15 clubs had plenty of chances to snag Tuck but missed out.

exactly and gilmore was a good risk, its not the tigers fault he had at first that ankle break in his very 1st pre season and then had danny there to gude him into being a lazy @rse with pathetic work ethic.
