Gale non-committal on Hardwick's contract
SEN
01 Feb 2016
Richmond Chief Executive Brendan Gale says the club is in no hurry to extend coach Damien Hardwick's contract, with his current deal to finish at the end of 2016.
Tigers President Peggy O'Neal said last month that the board would start considering Hardwick's future early in the new year, but Gale has told Breakfast with Frank and Ox there is no timeline on a new contract.
"We don't put a time on it. We'll sit back and we've got our own internal criteria to make a decision, but it's fair to say we've got enormous confidence in Damien," Gale said.
"We think he's a fine person, we think he's brought this club and the playing list a long way and we think he's got enormous up side," Gale said.
It is Hardwick's seventh year in charge of the Tigers, and the club has played finals the last three years but have failed to win one.
"We'll take into account a whole range of considerations in validating Damien's contract. We think he's done an extraordinary job in the last 5 or 6 years from where he's brought the list, and we continue to get better and better, and I think we'll get better again this year."
Gale is not concerned about the potential distraction Hardwick's contract might be for the club throughout 2016.
"We just go about our business according to our own time frame, that's us. As far as Damien is concerned he's a very focused and pretty resilient coach so I wouldn't imagine it would be too much of a distraction." Gale said.

Richmond won't be rushed on Hardwick
AFL.com.au
February 1, 2016
RICHMOND has confidence in coach Damien Hardwick, but will not be rushed into extending his contract beyond 2016, CEO Brendon Gale says.
Gale told SEN the Tigers had a range of "internal criteria" to decide if Hardwick was the right man for the job beyond 2016, but said the club had faith in its coach.
"We have got enormous confidence in Damien," Gale said.
"We think he is a fine person. We think he has brought this club and the playing list a long way and we think he has enormous upside."
Hardwick began coaching Richmond in 2010, taking over a team that had finished second last on the ladder.
The Tigers lost his first nine games as coach as he began the arduous process of rebuilding the list during the expansion era.
He has built a team good enough to make the finals in the past three seasons but they are yet to win one, being eliminated in the first week each season.
Gale said those losses – particularly the devastating loss to North Melbourne last season – has hardened the team's resolve.
"Sometimes those bitter experiences, those extremely painful experiences, really harden your resolve and make you stronger going forward," Gale said.
Hardwick now has a win-loss record above 50 per cent and the Tigers have a list considered capable of reaching the top four.
"We think he has done an extraordinary job in the last five or six years from where he has brought the list, and I think we continue to get better and better," Gale said.
The Tigers CEO said the club would not put a timeline on when a decision would be made on Hardwick, however the club board is expected to meet in mid-February.
"We'll sit back. We have got our own internal criteria in which we'll make a decision," Gale said.
He did not think Hardwick would be distracted by contract speculation.
"He is a pretty focused and resilient coach and I would not imagine it would be too much of a distraction," Gale said.

Tigers not rushing on Dimma deal
Herald-Sun
February 1, 2016
RICHMOND won’t be rushed into extending the contract of coach Damien Hardwick.
Hardwick is contracted until the end of the season, and while Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale gave a strong vote of confidence for the coach to be re-appointed today, he insists no timeline will be put on putting pen to paper.
The coach said before Christmas that he had hoped a contract extension would be arranged prior to Round 1, but as far as Gale is concerned, Hardwick will be assessed on a number of fronts before any decision is made.
“We think he’s done an extraordinary job in the last five or six years in where he’s brought the list,” he said on SEN.
“I think we’ll get better again this year.
“We don’t put a time on it. We’ll sit back. We’ve got our own internal criteria … we’re not going to put a time on it, but it’s fair to say we’ve got enormous confidence in Damien.
“We think he’s a fine person, we think he’s brought this playing group a long way and we think he’s got enormous upside.”
Gale said “it’s a timing thing” and doesn’t believe signing Hardwick now or holding off will affect the coach’s motivation to perform and lead the group.
“We’ll do a full evaluation, involve committees and boards and the like,” he said.
“Damien is a very self-motivated individual. I’m not sure anything we can do to hold or delay talks is going to make him any more motivated.”
Richmond has fallen at the first final for three years running, and Gale is refusing to put a ceiling on what can be achieved this year, even flagging a top-four finish.
“Given that we were a few points out of the top four last year, I think it’s a fair aspiration to have,” he said.
“But first, we’ve got to get to finals. It’s a very tough competition. We’ll be better.”
Gale also said recruit Chris Yarran is set to join the main group within the next few weeks having battled a soft-tissue complaint over the preseason.

Bartlett: ‘What the hell is going on?’
Herald-Sun
February 2, 2016
RICHMOND legend Kevin Bartlett believes coach Damien Hardwick should fear for his job.
Hardwick is contracted until the end of the season, and while Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale gave a strong vote of confidence for the coach to be reappointed on Monday, he insists no timeline will be put on putting pen to paper.
Bartlett said if he was in Hardwick’s position, he would be asking “what the hell is going?”
“If I was Damien Hardwick I would be scratching my head today,” Bartlett said on SEN.
“Damien we’re told is very self motivated. He will have to be, for the club clearly believes he may not be the man to lead the Tigers to the Holy Grail.”
The coach said before Christmas that he had hoped a contract extension would be arranged prior to Round 1, but as far as Gale is concerned, Hardwick will be assessed on a number of fronts before any decision is made.

Calm down Kevin Bartlett, Richmond will almost certainly reappoint coach Damien Hardwick

CHILL everybody, especially you Kevin Bartlett and your dark-clouded sidekick.
A recommendation will be made by Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale to the Tigers board to reappoint Damien Hardwick and it will almost certainly happen before Round 1.
It will take a sensational change of attitude at board level for Hardwick not to get an extension.
Chairman Peggy O’Neill is satisfied they have the right coach. Gale is satisfied. The players want him. And Hardwick wants the job.
It will happen. And soon.
The knee-jerk reaction to Gale’s comments that the club was not in hurry to sign Hardwick was typically Richmond.
Not Richmond internally, but Richmond from the outside, this time led by Bartlett.
The Tigers champ said that Hardwick would be “scratching his head’’ after Gale’s comments on SEN Radio,
And more provocative, KB said the club clearly didn’t believe Hardwick was the coach to deliver them the next premiership and that’s why the club was hesitating on an extension.
KB is a stirrer and you have to wonder if his grandstanding was simply pumped-up radio talk.
If it was genuine, then it was a sure sign that anything Richmond this year will be given the twice over.
Perhaps that’s the law of the jungle when you lose three consecutive elimination finals.
That any so-called hiccups this year will become an international incident.
That losses to Collingwood (Round 2), Adelaide (Round 3) and West Cost (Round 4) will constitute a massive crisis at Punt Rd.
Agreed, there is pressure on Hardwick and his players but extracting “Hardwick hasn’t the faith of the club’’ from Gale’s comments is a bit rich even for the first week post-Grand Slam.
KB surely can’t be serious.
Gale described Hardwick’s coaching tenure as “extraordinary’’ and that the club had “enormous confidence’’ and believed he had “enormous upside’’.
In December, O’Neill told the Herald Sun: “He has done a great job considering where we have come from.’’
From those comments, suddenly Hardwick’s position was under threat.
The fact is the Tigers internally believe they have the right man.
A submission hasn’t yet gone to the board, but it will happen in the coming weeks and will be signed off within a day.
It will almost certainly be a two-year contract extension, such is the support he has at Punt Rd.
At Brisbane, Justin Leppitsch is being given a one-year contract extension, which was revealed in today’s Herald Sun, and that points to a club believing they had the right person, but still protecting itself if it all went pear-shaped.
The Tigers are far more bullish despite finals losses.
Now in their seventh season under Hardwick, the Tigers can be assessed on all crazy fronts.
If you’re a glass half empty, then they’re choking in finals. If you’re a glass half full, then they have played in three consecutive finals series for the first since 1974-75. And that was under Tommy Hafey.
What does it all mean? Not much because a new season and new challenges are upon them.
And if you’re into kneejerk Tigers reaction, watch if they lose to Carlton in Round 1. The world will officially end.

Whether for the reason his contracted tenure as coach has been more than generous, or the fact that this list need a change to evolve, his contract should NOT be renewed and the search for his replacement should have already begun.
Thanks Damien. Close the door behind you.

Media hype, he will be out of contract EOY 2016, no story there

Trent Cotchin threw his support behind coach Damien Hardwick, whose contract expires at the end of the 2016 season.
"'Dimma' is a fantastic coach, he's been there for a long period of my career," he said.
"He's a great coach and a great person, and the reality of that it that it will take care of itself."
