Title: Non-Richmond games 2016
Post by: RollsRoyce on February 19, 2016, 09:07:51 AM
I didn't see any of last night's Hawthorn vs Carlton game, but judging by that final scoreline of 53 to 32 I can only assume one of two things happened:
1. There were four 10 minute quarters with no time-on. Or
2. There were even higher levels of stacks-on-the-mill, rolling zone garbage than usual.

Not really - Hawthorn were just rusty, taking it easy and Carlton are just crap.

North beat the Saints.

No surprises so far. Teams playing their near-best sides cruising against clubs that are playing all their youngsters/reserves.

Just a question about the coverage during round 1.  Now that the interchange is capped at 90, how many times have ch7 shown us an interchange count?  I saw one during Port v Saints & it was in the last few minutes.  Port had 2 interchanges left & Saints had 1 ... game over with 5 mins left!  Since there is a brand new sparkling rule in the game is there any harm in the viewers actually knowing the interchange count?

Watching the replay of our game, I noticed Ch7 mentioned it a 3 qtr time but no they didn't show many graphics about it during the game

On that note, I think the interchange rule brought a lot more balance to the game. All games this round, with perhaps the exception of GC v Ess, were fairly entertaining with a few crackers for the neutral. Think football is going to become "more watchable" this year!  :thumbsup

Agree!  There was something enjoyable about watching Whoreforn run out of legs as Geelong ran all over them in the last!  Good For Footy!   :snidegrin
But as a neutral viewer I wanted to know about the interchange numbers to enjoy watching them slow to a crawl even more, but the coverage let that stat slide ... the one stat that was actually affecting the game never cracked it for a mention!  The interchange numbers tell us something about how the coach is approaching the game - did Clarko go too hard too early?  etc ...

The Bulldogs are getting murdered by biased umpiring favouring the reigning premiers.
The decisions are mind boggling.

The Bulldogs get their first free kick at 28th minute mark of the 1st quarter.
Hawthorn has 5.

Doggies now copping a few injuries. Lost Murphy last week and now Johannisen (bad hammy) and Boyd (shoulder) tonight.

Steve May is looking at 6 weeks for his old fashion hip-and-shoulder shirtfront on Stef Martin. The AFL will come down like a ton of bricks on him. It'll be a straight to the tribunal job - May went past the ball, jumped off the ground, deliberately went to bump, head high contact and Martin was knocked out instantly and stretched off.

Huge results this weekend. Port are infact rubbish, we may be duking it out with them for the early draft picks.

GWS to make finals.

Melbourne to beat us comfortably next week, looking very solid.

Still very much in the air as to who the top 4 sides are imo. Dogs won't last up there, Hawthorn not looking as strong as they should be. Adel, Syd, W.C best teams for mine.

Extra sickening when Adelaide was in my multi.

That cat Smith grabs the ball with seconds left and just stood there with no attempt to get rid of it.

Nearly folded in 1996, 5 years after winning a flag. Member numbers flakey until the mid 2000s.

They jump off. Glory hunters.

Mind you, 45,000 last night at their home game, 5000 of which were Adelaide. So much for the alleged 75,000 members when only 40,000 ever turn up to a Melbourne home game

At the other end of the ladder, Lyon and Freo going the tank this year after finishing minor premiers last year.

While he's yet to do much, the Dogs really missed Tom Boyd up forward last night. They kept bombing it forward but were too short and small to compete against North's taller defenders. They really needed a big bodied key forward to mark or bring the ball to ground level. They also missed Murphy's clean use of the ball off half-back. It was like watching us last night with that many turnovers  ;D.

North, on the other hand, are having a dream run. All their players including all their 30+ brigade are fit and in form, so their best 22 is settled and on the park every week.

North did little to convince me last night, aside from get the win. Dogs could have (and should have) won that with a little more forward structure. Scott would surely be a little concerned with the contested footy disparity.

Thanks. Yeah, it looked like watching the vision initially that the reason he went down was due to his knee twisting in the tackle, but as we now know, it was the follow through from the tackler colliding with Gazza's head.

I see Brad Scott was whinging about umpires last night. I must have missed where he bagged the umps post-game for the missed holding the ball decision on Cunnington in front of our goal in the EF   :sleep. Karma!

North are the biggest bunch of scraggers and divers. Thomas only has himself to blame if the umps now refuse to pay him any head-high free kicks.

Why why why isn't this us?

We had Save our Skins early 90s, they had Operation Payback to stop a merger with Melbourne in '96.
We played Preliminary final 2001, they played Prelimany final 2001.
We hit rock bottom again changed our coach in 2005, they hit rock bottom changed their coach 2005.
We have made 3 Elimination finals losing all three and look to rebuild again again since then.
They have made finals 9 out of 12 years won 4 premierships and maybe a 5th with the the possibility of 4 in a row.  :rollin

Why? Why? Why?

Hard to see anyone beating Hawthorn when it matters. Geelong are too flighty; Swans have been shown up post-2012 vs Hawthorn; GWS and Eagles struggle away from home; Dogs crueled by injuries; North are pretenders; Adelaide unknown. The Crows arguably have the scoring power to match Hawthorn but we are yet to see this current Adelaide side perform in September which as we know is a different kettle of fish. Geelong at its best can score quickly against any side and have a good record against Hawthorn but they are very inconsistent and the difference between their best and worst is huge.

They won't get past the 2nd week of the finals but you've got to admire the Dogs team workrate and pressure. It doesn't drop no matter how many players they've lost to injury this year.

As for North = old pretenders!  :lol :yep. Unlikely, but if the Saints were to win all of their remaining games, they could still knock the Roos (who play top 4 sides) out of the finals.

North:    -             Haw (MCG)    Syd (ES)         GWS (ES)
St K:    Carl (ES)   Syd (ES)        Rich (MCG)      Bris (ES)

A bad night for the Hawks. They'll most likely now finish 4th facing an interstate final and their rucks stocks will be tested with McEvoy only left after Ceglar did what looked like an ACL.

The Eagles also have concerns despite the win with NicNat hurting his knee(?) as well.

AFL HQ will be doing cartwheels about last night's result.

Match-ups for first week of finals if the rest of round 23 results go as expected:

Qualifying final - Sydney Swans v Greater Western Sydney @ ANZ
Qualifying final - Geelong v Hawthorn @ MCG
Elimination final - West Coast v Western Bulldogs @ Subiaco
Elimination final - Adelaide v North Melbourne @ Adelaide Oval

That would mean a final in four different states and sell-outs for each final.

Edit: Fixed - Sydney derby at ANZ; not SCG.
