Richmond set to recall Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance for NAB Challenge clash
GLENN McFARLANE
Herald Sun
February 20, 2016 8:00pm
RICHMOND stars Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance are likely to kick off their 2016 campaigns in Saturday’s NAB Challenge clash with Hawthorn at Beaconsfield.
As the Tigers crank up their preparations for the season-opener against Carlton in five weeks, some of the club’s more experienced players will take on the
Hawks after being rested from the opening pre-season game against Fremantle on Friday night.
The young Tigers went down to Fremantle at Mandurah by 60 points, but the club’s general manager of football Dan Richardson is confident of fielding a close-to-full strength side for the next encounter against the Hawks.
“They’ve all been training well, so we would expect most of those guys, if not all of those guys, to play (against Hawthorn),” Richardson said on Saturday.
“Assuming there is no issue with them during the week, they should be fine to play.”
“Most sides would be happy to get two NAB Challenge games into their players, particularly your senior players, so we would expect a few players to return.”

The Tigers will likely take a side approaching full strength to Beaconsfield on Saturday after playing a team full of kids against the Dockers.
Alex Rance, Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards are among likely inclusions.
But Ben Griffiths, crunched by Aaron Sandilands in an incident that saw the Docker suspended for Round 1, will have to pass a concussion test.
Ty Vickery will not play against Hawthorn.

You would hope McBean gets a run but we shouldn't be surprised if it's Jack and Chaplin up forward with TV and Griffs out.

Would prefer to play the kids again. Gives them good experience against quality opposition.

Don't totaaly disagree but would imagine we need seniors to get some match play under their belt at some stage.

No surprise it's sold out despite it being a glorified practice match. Both clubs have large support down that way.

Clarko will have corky Mitchell ready to take out our gun players.

Maric said Richmond had played with plenty of pressure against the Dockers, but their structure and defensive setup had been poor.
"That's something we want to improve for [Saturday against Hawthorn]," he said.

Menadue is everywhere! In the back pocket one moment, then across HB, then wing. Then gets forward, leads up & marks to kick our first goal! :clapping
Keep it up son!
-
Sick of seeing our forwards playing from behind.

That was Chaplin :banghead

Really concerned about conca, seen him make a number of basic but glaring errors in half a qtr of footy
1. Deep In defence running with the ball in dispute and bouncing towards the boundary, he tries to do something fancy by stopping short, winning the ball and turning blind back into the corridor instead of paddling it to the boundary. It didn't come off simply bc only someone like Rioli could maybe pull something like that off. Wtf is he even thinking about trying to do something like that?
2. Misses a 15 metre pass under no pressure ala the elim final
3. Gets caught holding the ball after trying to take on poppy - again near the boundary line - take it over.
Decision making and basic skills lacking
-
Jack is killing them. 5 marks all of them contested.
-
Chol would have marked both those
-
Tigers holding back and making to many mistakes but it is just a practice match :gotigers

Cotch tackles Burgoyne and gets the free. Over to Dusty who short passes to Ivan. Switch to Floss, Houli and Ellis and we go long. Edwards had a chance but mucks it up.
Ball-up near our goal and now throw-in. Hawks pinged for deliberate. Cotch free 20m out on the boundary. His kick is across the face and it's a throw-in on the other side. Now a bounce and the Hawks clear.
Game full of stoppages but when we break through we're missing good opportunities when we get it forward.
-
Ivan taps it into space, Ellis then Chappy. We go long but Dusty is spoiled and it's rushed through.

It's like playing a man down

The Tigers have been more prolific with ball in hand post clearance, leading the disposal count 89 to 62.
Ten of Dustin Martin's 12 disposals have been post clearance.

If we want to take the next step we have to upgrade Batchelor and hunt immediately. If they're in our best side we're struggling
-
Richmond is on track for its third straight win over Hawthorn in a pre season match. It has beaten them at its own game so far, recording 38 more disposals and 35 more uncontested possessions at half time.
One of Hawthorn's strengths last season was scoring from stoppages, ranking second in the AFL in scoring from clearance differentials. It has only managed one behind from clearance chains so far this afternoon.
Our first 4 goals came from turnovers.
Jack Riewoldt is giving his direct opponent the run around, recording a game-high eight marks and five score involvements. He led the Tigers for score involvements last year.

Actually add Grigg to that list and it's 4 very ordinary AFL footballers running around in our best 22 from last year. If a couple of young guys could take their spot we are in pretty good shape. Dimma just has to have the balls to make tough calls.
-
Menadue has been the most exciting thing to come out of today's game so far. We need younger players who can make significant impact on a game.
Jack is just a gun :bow.

If we want to go to the next level, we need to cut out the schoolboy errors such as dropping simple marks. Mind you it's a practice match and both sides are rusty.
-
Rugby fashion almost, we get it forward. Holding the ball against the Hawks. Miles towards to Jack but he can't to it. Free to Andrew Moore though for holding and he kicks a goal :gotigers

Rance to McIntosh finds Batch at HB. Over to Houli with a game leading 19 touches. Lambert now towards Titch but he can't get it and it's a throw-in 70m out.
Rioli out of two tackles to Lennon, back to Rioli and over to Dusty towards Edwards but it's held in by Hawthorn. Ball-up(s).
Lambert smothered scissor kick lol and Lennon gets a toe to it for a goal :gotigers

Richmond has complete control of the game. It has adopted a possession game style, recording 22 more short kicks and 16 more uncontested marks for the match.
Richmond has a 100 per cent scoring accuracy via that source. Hawthorn has managed 0.2 from set shots.

Double switch across HB. Brandon finds Dusty over to Miles. Wide to Morris now on. Short to Cotch and shorter to Moore (12 possies). Keeping possession via Rance. Cotch to Jack 52m out who hits up Titch who calls Rioli out of it and marks. Titch misses.

Good good signs.

Nothing better beating those friggin hawks and I don't don't give a poo if it's a practice match, love the win.
Grimes was good as were many others.

How many were Hawks missing?
-
Good win against a VFL Hawks side, good to see Moore and Townsend busting in and out of packs, think both will make a positive contribution during the season proper. Cotch looks in very good nick as do the usual suspects in Jack, Dusty, Rance and Titch.
The following was confirmed for me today (yes I know its only NAB 2):
1. We are in big trouble if Rance gets injured
2. We are in big trouble if Jack gets injured
3. Chaplin is a liability in any position he plays and if he plays round 1 then Hardwick should hang his head in shame.
-
How many were Hawks missing?
15 of their best 22 I'd say
-
I think we got through today all unscathed which is the main thing.

Have to say i am surprsied by those numbers
What he does, he does so well, pure silk when he has the ball.
Weve got a ripper with this lad

Best thing I can ssy about the day was we won
Not a fan of the venue. I am sure Cardinia Shire's number one fan Benny Gale will say it was fantasic but the amenities werent great
-
SEN's Top 5:
5. B.Ellis
They obviously just looked at the quantity and not the quality - was stuffing atrocious....
Yep, agree
Those dinky little kicks :banghead
Exactly and Cotch i hate to say is one of the worst exponents also. Not sure why the coaches can't see their kicking techniques over 10-20 metres are so poor and actually focus on it. Too many clangers for disposals in the short range for my liking today. Will get punished come the season proper as we did today on a couple of occasions.
-
My damn tv just turned off!!! Damn dog keeps chewing through the cords. Must have spliced it back together wrong :banghead
LOL. Got to love pets and their obsession with cords. Even my budgie loves nipping at them :yep.
So frustrating!!!! :banghead

conca with 12. How many goals did he kick to play so well?

Good to see Chris Newman having an immediate impact on the Hawks.

Lavington Sports ground is a far superior venue to Beaconsfield by long way. It actually has seats :snidegrin
Wang's ground also leaves Beaconsfield in its wake
Persoanlly i believe Lavi is a better venue than Wang but both are much better Beaconsfield a helliva lot better :thumbsup

Yer I saw this yesterday and had to log off before I started.. Most know what I think about B. Ellis and yesterday he was as bad as ever. Just nothing possessions. I honestly don't think this kid is in our best 22 if we intend to be a top 4 side. Some (SEN for one) get subdued by his numbers but he is just a momentum stopper IMO and is as soft as I've seen at the RFC. He is scared to make mistakes with his kicking so he looks for the easy 20 metre short kick, and that is as bad as ducking your head in a marking contest IMO.
I don't rate Conca much either but at least the kid has a go and try's to play like an AFL footballer even though his skills might not match his intentions.
Anyway other than that I was wrapt at the way we moved the footy and the confidence we had in doing so. We look like we know we are a decent side now.
If we can get some kids to push a few other out we are looking a pretty decent chance this year.

Brandon Ellis is waaaaay out of touch. Turnover machine
Dooks.
I'd say he's in his usual touch.

Even under 10's don't handball straight to the opposition when being corralled over the boundary line.
-
Heavens to Betty. It's refreshing to watch a grigg-less Richmond
-
Softest player in the comp is Brandon. Unfortunately for us he a few team mates not too far behind him.I would take the weak prick Grigg over this spinless squib anyday.
You can just see it come round 1 a team full of softies and mentally weak failures.
-
I wish we had a fainting emoji

Jack dyer said youcan carry one squib in a good side
B Ellis > grigg

Careful with the offensive comments fellas.
Remember, your free speech ceases at the exact point you hurt someone's feelings.

Seriously , the question has to be asked ( again)
Why do you even bother supporting this club which is obviously a diabolical mess ?
-
I think when you truly support the Tigers you bleed yellow and black. Its obvious to me that Claw is a truly passionate supporter that, like all of us, wants the best for the club. He just tells it as he sees it and it seems he is fed up with limp wristed pansies disgracing our club jumper and wimpish types that can't seem to even crack a half mongrel during finals footy.

A) it doesn't hae to be asked. Yet you are askit anyway
B). Why are you having a cry about it?

Because my friend - life is too short to be that unhappy.

He's a %25 player.
Needs 3 others like him to perform on the same day to equal 1 player

Happiness is pretending average Richmond footballers are wonderful?
I'll just call Aristotle and Socrates and let them know
How do you go when we get pumped in finals with your ignorance is bliss world view? It must take some fair cognitive dissonance to reconcile Hampson hardwick grigg Chaplin being superstars and yet the team losing consistently

Na he's an outside player
Requires the engine room winnig the ball so he can run forwards

Maybe i havent got the good sense to give up on em.Or maybe i just like always being let down and kicked in the guts.Maybe deep down somewhere i just love failure who better to support if that is the case.Maybe i have come to like the ridicule that opposition supporters heap upon us.
Little man you could not blame any of us if we just up and walked away because they have given little reason to stay. Yes i voice my displeasure because i am not happy i have no tolerance for squibs like Ellis and spineless losses.
.Yet here we are still putting up with mediocrity cant win big games players failing when they most need to stand up and being told to shut up about it by the likes of you.
I see where your coming from, you THINK YOU love the club more than me because your positive. Well son Give yourself a pat on the back bully for you.
The truth is Your happy with what we have done which is stuff all. You thrive on failure and mediocrity .You actually tolerate being kicked in the guts and lied to. You tolerate failure and the scorn that comes with it
Thats all good bud keep on thinking your a better supporter, just dont expect me to tolerate it with ya.

Losing elimination finals in three consecutive years has surely got to be some kind of record of shitness.
It's just unacceptable but therein lies the irony.
