Fox Footy Round Table: Richmond season preview

While the spotlight was on captain Trent Cotchin after Richmond’s third straight finals loss last season, it’s the Tiger’s middle tier that must improve for Damien Hardwick’s side to taste September success.
Despite Champion Data rating four Tigers as elite, they have 15 players rated as average or below average.
Gerard Healey said if Richmond were to improve, the onus would fall on these same middle-tier players to up the ante.
“Their best and their worst, this group of players, is just too far away,” he told Fox Footy’s Round Table.
“Brandon Ellis needs to get better at getting the ball and doing some damage.
“(Tyrone) Vickery is another one. If he takes his best into 75 per cent of game it makes a massive difference.”

I saw this, the gist of the consensus was that in today's footy if you don't improve much year on year you fall behind bc everyone is improving. Fair call.
Apart from King who has us pushing for top 4, the rest had us slipping to the lower rungs of the 8 or just outside the 8. Reason given is we don't seem to have improved our list that much. The discussion then focused on our mid tier and how they needed to take the next step. Dermie went a different angle saying our top 6 who are all A graders need to get better and that will drag the rest to new heights.
Imo we need a bit of both. I think apart from Rance all of cotch, Martin, Lids, Riewoldt, Edwards and Miles need to get better, but we also need the following to go to a new level if we are to become a red hot side.
Vickery
Conca
Ellis
Astbury
Lennon
Batchelor
Vlastuin
Grimes
Yarran
Griffiths
McIntosh
Menadue
Ellis
Fair to say, several of those have serious question marks as afl players let alone as solid afl soldiers. On the flip side 4-5 of them are settled best 22 but ALL need to improve. To be top 4 we'd need 10-11 of them to improve and become solid afl players.

As long as the likes of Chaplin, B.Ellis, Hunt, Grigg, & Houli are not held accountable and remain walk up starts, the early exits will likely continue.

I was very much more optimistic about our season 6 weeks ago i thought top 4 was realistic.
Today however, I don't believe we will make the 8, players just don't have it mentally. to go to the next level.

I have to agree with ROGERRJ. The loss was not just a practice game loss. DIMMA was out of control and lost his poo. Not to mention the players who didn't know what they were doing. Totally lost.
Hardly the preparation and mindset of a top 4 club to take into the season proper. Let alone a finals club.
Teams like Hawthorn, Fremantle, West Coast, Geelong, Collingwood, North and Sydney will eat that weakness poo up and teams like GWS, Gold Coast, Bulldogs and Melbourne will smell the blood in the water.
It all doesn't bode well
