Richmond gives Learmonth Oval thumbs up for match
The Courier
Tuesday, 27 December 2005

RICHMOND Football Club has given Learmonth Oval the thumbs up to host an intra-club practice match in February.

A Tigers official was pleased with what he saw when he inspected the ground yesterday.

Richmond football operations manager Paul Armstrong walked the turf and deemed it safe to play.

Learmonth Football/Netball Club ground supervisor Paul Ryan said the ground's bore water had it in perfect condition.

The Tigers will play the match as part of their AFL community camp in Ballarat on Wednesday, February 8.

"He was really happy with the ground," Mr Ryan said.

"It has been watered really well and it has come up really good.

"It doesn't matter what ground they play on, the AFL clubs have to check it. And he was quite surprised how good it was."

The Tigers will spend four days meeting football fans and conducting school visits, open training sessions, forums, and other activities.

There's also the opportunity for those OERites who like to let their frustrations out on a former coach of ours as you pass through Bungaree on the way ;).

Richmond will be making the major Victorian provincial town of Ballarat its home next week as part of the AFL's 2006 Community Camps program.

From February 6-9, the entire Richmond playing list and coaching staff will be in Ballarat to provide those locals who love the game a prime opportunity to get up close and personal with one of AFL football's traditional clubs.

During their stay, the Tigers will conduct open training sessions, play an intra-club practice match, visit local clubs, schools and hospitals, conduct special football forums, as well as a NAB AFL Auskick Superclinic (a must for children aged 5-13), and be involved in a host of other activities.

At the Community Forum, to be held at the North Ballarat Football Club in Creswick Road, Ballarat, on the Tuesday (Feb. 7) at 7.30pm, local football and sports club administrators and volunteers will hear from leading Tiger identities about the AFL's latest techniques and best-practice policies across a broad range of areas, including coaching, sports injury treatments, club management, goal-setting and leadership.

Entry is free and all local sports officials are welcome. To register your interest, email: bfl2@netconnect.com.au or bretta@footballvic.com.au.

The Richmond Football Club Official Dinner will take place at the Ballarat Leagues Club in Main Street, Ballarat on Wednesday, February 8 from 7pm.

Tickets are $40 per head, with bookings essential. The price includes a two-course meal (with beverages at bar prices), a memorabilia auction and terrific entertainment.

All proceeds go towards funding RoadSafe Community Road Safety Council 'Looking After Our Mates' sessions at local football clubs and an array of junior development activities in the Ballarat region.

Ballarat to host big cats on the loose
Ballarat Courier
Saturday, 4 February 2006

A RUN around Lake Wendouree will be the Tigers' first taste of Ballarat as they embark on their AFL community camp on Monday.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace and his charges will make Ballarat their home until Thursday.

Monday will be a relatively light day for the Tigers, with most of their community-based activities on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The lake run will begin at 10am, with the start-finish line being near the Lake View Hotel.

The City of Ballarat will put on a civic reception at the Town Hall before Richmond trains at Austar Arena from 3pm.

An Auskick superclinic at Austar Arena will be Richmond's first activity on Tuesday.

From there, players and coaching staff will get out into the community - visiting schools, hospitals and aged-care facilities in the city.

The day will round off with a series of community forums at North Ballarat Football Clubs in the evening.

The forums will cover all aspects of football, with separate sessions on coaching, administration, umpiring, medical care and youth.

AFL umpires Martin Ellis and Adam Davis will lead the umpiring segment, while Richmond coaching and medical staff and players will oversee the rest of the agenda.

Wednesday will feature coaching clinics at Smythesdale, Buninyong, Newlyn and Maryborough, and an intra-club practice match at Learmonth.

The community camp will end with an official function at Ballarat Leagues Club on Wednesday night.

Mona joins Tigers' lap of the lake
Ballarat Courier
Tuesday, 7 February 2006

A RUN around Lake Wendouree.

Not exactly a walk in the park, but in the mind of Richmond footballers a relatively straightforward way to open the Tigers' AFL community camp in Ballarat.

After all, six kilometres is not that far given the distance they have covered already in pre-season training.

This all changed for the Tigers though when Ballarat's marathon man and king of the lake Steve Moneghetti arrived on the scene yesterday morning - in his running gear.

Given that the players had been unaware of the "ring-in", suddenly there was a new dimension added to the run.

The Richmond hierarchy had kept the involvement of Moneghetti a secret and once the players learnt they were being given the challenge of trying to match strides with the legendary distance runner a buzz went through the group.

Moneghetti holds the lake lap record of 16 minutes, 10 seconds.

Yesterday, the plan was to run a much more leisurely time of 18 to 19 minutes with the objective of getting the best of the Tigers to perhaps break the 20-minute barrier. He gave players up to a four-minute start and gave every one of the 20-plus who took part windburn as he swept past them.

Moneghetti overtook the last of the players four kilometres into the circuit at Durham Point and went on to run 18:27.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said the purpose of getting Moneghetti involved was to test the players' ability to respond to a challenge.

He said rather than competing among themselves, they were being asked to experience the pace of a world class athlete and see how long they could sustain it.

And Wallace and everyone in the Richmond camp marvelled at the fitness of the veteran distance runner.

Few were able to stay with Moneghetti for more than a few strides once the strain of the run set in.

The opening day of the four-day camp also featured a civic reception hosted by the City of Ballarat and a full-scale training session at Austar Arena.

The Ballarat Tiger supporters' group had a black-tie dinner last night, with captain Kane Johnson and Wallace among special guests.

Wallace, in his second year with Richmond, said this was a very different pre-season for the Tigers to his first.

He said that had been very much a learning process for him.

"I didn't know much about what I had," he said.

"This year I do and it is much more about teaching."

Today's activities include a superclinic at Austar Arena from 10.30am, in-store promotion at the AFL Store at Stockland Wendouree at 3.45pm and community forum at North Ballarat Football Club from 7.30pm.

The forums, led by Richmond coaching and medical staff and players, will cover all facets of football for coaches, trainers, administrators, youth and umpiring, which will involve AFL central umpires Adam Davis and Martin Ellis.

Richmond players will also visit a range of educational, medical and community facilities.

Tomorrow's program will take in regional clinics at Smythesdale, Buninyong, Newlyn and Maryborough from 11am, an in-store promotion at Amart All Sports in Wendouree from 12.30pm and an intra-club practice match at Learmonth from 4pm.

Tour prompts Tiger's ashen memories
The Age
February 8, 2006

After the Ash Wednesday bushfires had torn through Upper Beaconsfield, John Tivendale bundled his kids into the car and took them for a drive.

Greg Tivendale was only three then, but the Richmond midfielder can still recall the burnt-out area.

"I can still remember driving around looking at all the trees and all the burnt grass. I sort of wondered what had happened to it all - it was really strange," Tivendale said.

"We lived in Beaconsfield and I don't think we were ever in any real danger, but we all got evacuated and sent down to the local park. I can remember that and I can still remember my old man refusing to leave the house for anything. It's funny what sticks in your mind."

The "community" aspect of Richmond's four-day camp in Ballarat this week has mostly involved big groups of screaming schoolchildren shoving pen and paper at their favourite players. But yesterday, Tivendale and Mark Chaffey travelled an hour-and-a-half past Ballarat, to a farm outside Moyston, the town where Tom Wills, who helped create Australian football, grew up.

There, they met Tom and Sarah Guthrie, who saved their home when the recent fires turned large parts of the Grampians to charcoal but lost all but one of their 20 tonnes of crop in their award-winning vineyard, their hay shed, the five-bedroom shearer's cottage they used to hire out and more than 40 kilometres of fencing. The pony belonging to Pollyanna, their nine-year-old daughter, hasn't been seen since the fire.

Richmond will play their first full-scale practice match at Learmonth today, which means the season is not far off and that Tivendale, Chaffey and their teammates will soon be immersed in another six months of football.

They would return, Tivendale said, to relatively sheltered lives. "That's the thing. You see this and it's so dead and so burnt, but everyone is positive and upbeat about it," he said.

"It's a real eye-opener. It's hard to think how intense it would have been at the time and how long it's going to go on, with everything just being destroyed."

Title: Browny, Cogs, Tivs, Knobel, Chaffey and Thursty to miss intra-club match

Tigers protect mending forward
Ballarat Courier
Wednesday, 8 February 2006

RICHMOND gun forward Nathan Brown will miss a Tiger intraclub practice match at Learmonth today.
Brown is working his way back from a shocking broken leg suffered against Melbourne in round 10 in the AFL last season.

The Tiger star's comeback is going well, but assistant coach David King said Brown was not yet ready to take part in full-scale match practice.

Brown is pivotal to Richmond's finals prospects and the Tigers have no plans to take any risks with the vice-captain.

While not in the helter-skelter of action, Brown will have an ambassadorial role at Learmonth - getting out and mixing with spectators and Tiger fans as will other players on the sidelines on what is the third day of Richmond's community camp in Ballarat.

King, who with fellow assistant coach Brian Royal will take charge of the teams in today's match, said Mark Coughlan, Greg Tivendale, Mark Chaffey, Trent Knobel and Will Thursfield were among other players unlikely to play.

King said the match would provide players, particularly new youngsters, to put their names up in lights as the scramble for places in the team for NAB Cup hots up.

Richmond plays Hawthorn in round one on Saturday, February 25.

"There's only a few positions open so they have to put their names forward," King said.

"You can bet the gloves will be off.

"It's all about rankings (at this time of year).

"Those that play well enough will climb into calculations." he said.

Deputy vice-captain Matthew Richardson, who echoed King's thoughts by saying the younger players would certainly be out to impress today, is extremely pleased with his own preparation.

"It's been a solid pre-season.

"I've done everything, which puts me in good stead."

Meanwhile, newly-promoted deputy vice-captain Darren Gaspar is keen to extend his time with the Tigers when his contract expires at the end of this year.

Gaspar, 29, bounced back to his best form last season after a traumatic 2004, earning his place back in the leadership group.

Question for MT when you get back.

I was wondering if Jacko doing well on Roach is an indication that Jacko is doing well or Roach the opposite.

Final:

Royals 11.7.73

Overall everyone on Kings was good that qtr.

Tigers unveil new-look attack
7:36:16 PM Wed 8 February, 2006
Paul Gough in Learmonth
Exclusive to afl.com.au
Richmond unveiled a raft of new attacking options in their first intra-club match of 2006 on Wednesday as Tigers coach Terry Wallace looks to find more avenues to goal this season.

And while the man who has carried the Tigers attack for much of the past decade - Matthew Richardson - was the star of the show with six goals in his first appearance for the season, there were signs that Richmond's attack will have far more options this year.

With Nathan Brown sitting out the match, instead acting as a runner as he continues his comeback from a broken leg, it gave Wallace a chance to experiment - with youngsters Cleve Hughes, Daniel Jackson and Dean Limbach all prominent in attack.

Hughes, the All-Australian under 18 centre-half-forward last year, was the Tigers' second round draft pick last November and the South Australian showed plenty of potential in his first hit-out.

While the Tigers' top pick in Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls did not play due to groin soreness, Hughes wasted little time making an impact in booting two goals, one of them from a strong pack mark in the opening quarter.

Limbach, who spent all of his first year in the VFL last year, also booted two while Jackson, who has played nearly all of his 16 games in defence, booted three after being switched into attack at half-time.

Wallace was pleased with all three youngsters, particularly with newcomer Hughes.

"Cleve is a natural forward but he is just learning the game so the main thing you look for at the moment with him is cameos."

"You look for him to do two or three things nicely, knowing if he can do that now then in 12 months time he will be able to do seven or eight of those things and in two years time he will be able to 10 or 11 of those sort of things."

Wallace said he also liked the look of Jackson, who debuted for the Tigers while still at school, as a forward.

"We wanted to have a look at him as a forward and see how he handled himself and I thought he went all right," Wallace said of Jackson.

But it was Richardson who was by far the most dominant player on the ground with his four last quarter goals deciding the outcome after little separated the two teams in the first three terms.

Richardson, who turns 31 just before the start of the home and away season, was opposed to Joel Bowden, Darren Gaspar and Jay Schulz throughout the match but was too big and strong for Schulz in the final term.

Wallace said Richardson's first-up display was even more pleasing considering his pre-season had been a lot quieter this year.

"I think he probably ran himself into the ground trying to prove a point last year with a new coach around and that had a little bit to do with the knee soreness he got later in the season," Wallace said of the Tigers' most important player.

"So we have actually tried to hold him back and have him fresher this year than last year but, as you age, sometimes that freshness in your game helps you a bit."

Other players to impress on Wednesday were Shane Tuck, who dominated in midfield, while David Rodan also played well in his first outing from the knee surgery which kept him out for all of last season.

Last year's NAB Rising Star winner Brett Deledio enjoyed a solid first half as did Nathan "Axel" Foley while Troy Simmonds kicked three goals and Luke McGuane, another youngster yet to make his debut, was also impressive.

Wallace said only Brown and Mark Chaffey, who is still recovering from ostetis pubis, would be the only players who would not take part in the club's next intra-club match after the other players to miss on Wednesday - Oakley-Nicholls, Travis Casserly, Greg Tivendale, Kel Moore, Mark Coughlan, Trent Knobel and Will Thursfield - were only rested due to minor ailments.

Ruckman Greg Stafford (knee) and on-baller Chris Hyde (corked thigh) were the only casualties from the game but Wallace said both were only taken from the field as a precaution as the Tigers sweated it out in hot and windy conditions at the picturesque Learmonth ground, just outside of Ballarat.

Wallace dusts off old plan to keep Richmond on run
By Emma Quayle, Learmonth
The Age
February 9, 2006

A FRESHER Matthew Richardson will front a forward line Richmond coach Terry Wallace will tell to keep attacking this season. So long as the Tigers are not conceding too many goals.

Wallace, who this time last year pledged to turn his new team into one of the competition's most free-running, high-scoring and exciting sides, said Sydney's defensive success last year, and the occasional beltings handed to the Tigers, had not turned him off the idea.

Richardson kicked four final-quarter goals on defender-in-the-making Jay Schulz yesterday in a full-scale practice match in which young defender Daniel Jackson found his forward-line feet, Dean Limbach looked increasingly comfortable and recruit Cleve Hughes took encouraging marks.

"I think there's both aspects. Everyone talks about the defensive aspect of Sydney, but West Coast lost a grand final by a kick and were the exact opposite," Wallace said.

"They were a fast-running, fast-flowing side, and the Western Bulldogs were as good as anyone in the second half of last year as a free-running, free-flowing side.

"I think you've got to do both. We've got to pick up the defensive side of our game, as well, because we had some big scores kicked against us.

"When we got beaten, we usually got beaten badly. So there's balance of going out to attack, but not forgetting the defensive aspects of the game, as well."

Mindful of the toll last season's workload took on onballers Mark Coughlan and Shane Tuck, Wallace wheeled a number of players through the midfield yesterday, Nathan Foley prolific early and David Rodan, playing his first football since last year's knee reconstruction, good later.

Coughlan did not play, having had a slightly sore back, along with Greg Tivendale, Mark Chaffey, Kel Moore and draftee Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, who have degrees of groin soreness but should be ready for the NAB Cup. Nathan Brown, who probably won't play until the start of next month, played runner.

Wallace said that, having put in an exhaustive effort last pre-season to impress his coaches, Richardson was fresher than he had been this time last year. He expected his young opponent, Schulz, to play plenty of senior football this year, and become gradually more capable of handling the big names.

"Whether he's ready each week, week in, week out, over 120 minutes, to take the best players, is questionable. He hasn't played much senior footy at this stage," Wallace said.

"He needs to be able to play on the third-best forward at times, but also be able to take the responsibility to step up and take the good one, so that he keeps progressing and keeps learning, as well."

Richmond will wind up its community camp in Ballarat with meetings this morning, with Wallace looking to play his "probable" first-round NAB Cup players against the "possibles" in another practice at Victoria Park next week.

Tiger hopefuls out to make favourable impressions
Ballarat Courier
Thursday, 9 February 2006

IT'S just not football - better suited to cricket - when a strong, hot northerly blows across the Learmonth Oval.
But AFL Richmond players made it look easy in a hotly-contested intra-club practice match yesterday.

A number of Richmond senior list hopefuls, blended in with a sprinkling of Ballarat and Central Highlands Football Leagues players and a Ballarat central umpire Jarrod Waight for good measure.

While the score was incidental, the fight for a guernsey in the "probables versus the possibles" match next weekend was at stake.

Tigers coach Terry Wallace took a distinctive country coach approach by sitting atop the coaching box, keen to marshall his troops early as overseer of both sides.

Star forward Nathan Brown, still showing a slight limp from his much publicised badly broken right leg from last season, was coach Wallace's main runner during the full scale practice match.

"Browny, tell Cleve (Hughes) that in the first minute of the game he has missed two tackles in a row," Wallace shouted.

Moments later, Andrew Kellaway left the ground for stitches to a cut near his left eye and Wallace announced "the first one for winter" as he relishes the adrenalin oozing from the match.

He told The Courier that spearhead Matthew Richardson only missed out on the club's best and fairest last season because of a clash with a Carlton footballer early in the first quarter of a late season match.

"He only missed out by one vote," Wallace said.

But Richardson showed plenty of signs that he will again be a force this season and he teamed up with young gun Brett Delidio early as Wallace set the sides against each other with the best forwards versus the best defenders.

Wallace wants the club video to concentrate on the stoppages and the fringes around the packs.

Wallace said the Ballarat AFL camp would finish today with a rehab morning of a swim and weights followed by a team meeting.

"We will be setting goals at the meeting, the aims and objectives and standards to be set for the season."

Wallace said he was realatively happy with the soon-to-be trialled NAB Cup pre-season competition's new rules.

"I am a bit surprised and bemused, though, that they changed the kick-out rule, but otherwise I have no issues," Wallace said.

Meanwhile, the game was in full swing and it was obvious - Terry Wallace loves his football.

Cheers to Moi for putting up with a dodgy phone connection from Learmonth :cheers.

Hot fairly blustery conditions greeted the players but the oval looked in good nick. Grandstand side was packed with kids sitting inside the fence. Crowd between one to two thousand. A local mentioned watching an intra-club game is strange as there's little crowd noise such as cries of 'ball'. Only when's there a good mark or goal to your get a cheer.

No sign of Oakley-Nicholls, Casserley, Cogs, Knobel or Moore in Learmonth. Tivs and Chaffey spent most of the arvo together on the boundary except when Tivs acted as runner. Browny was also a runner. Greg Miller was also a spectator.

Standard of the game improved as the game went along. Skills (as far as hitting targets) were far better in the second half. There was also more of the run and carry gameplan we expect under Wallace's coaching with dishing off of the footy via handball to teammates running past and breaking the lines. This meant more direct play particularly from the Kings. Overall not a bad hit-out first up.

The teams:

Royals (White jumpers)

1. Newman - Good game for 3 quarters and especially so in the second. Spent a fair bit of time in the centre square and did well there IMO. He still played more of a receiving role but he ran to the right spots to feed off Tucky's handballs at pace into space and then kick forward.

2. Gas - only played the first half. He was walking around along the boundary so nothing wrong as far as I saw. A usual Gas game.

5. Simmonds - Very pleased with Simmo. Although he didn't dominate the ruck, his work and run around the ground was excellent. He's obviously more mobile and agile without all that extra weight that Freo stacked on him. Pushed forward to snag 3 goals from marks on the lead so a pretty good game all round.

8. Roach - Not a BP that's for sure. Jacko took him apart. Didn't do much else apart from two good kicks inside 50 when he got the ball forward of centre. Probably the only one from yesterday's match at this stage that I think might be playing his final year.

11. Joel Bowden - Probably a compliment that I forgot to tell Moi he was one of the Royals' better players. Another solid game from Joel.

14. Polo - Reasonable game in the centre but he spent most of that against Foley so came out second in that duel.

17. Johnson - Like Joel one of the Royals' best. One of the few to play a solid 4 quarters for them. Got plenty of the ball in the guts as well as in defence floating in front of oncoming Kings' forwards. Lovely mark with Richo bearing down on him in the 3rd quarter.

19. Limbach - I thought he was quiet in the first half with Jacko on him but came into the game more in the second half to kick a couple of goals. Took a couple of nice marks as well.

21. Tuck - Best on ground for the Royals as far as winning the ball and impact. The middle quarters he was simply burning. No second year blues based on this match.

22. Meyer - Very good first half but quiet in the second. The first quarter he was in everything playing on a HFF. Sheesh this kid can kick a footy.

25. Schulz - Felt sorry for Sarge today. Did well on the big fella up to 3/4 time with some timely fists; then Richo gives him a spanking in the space of 10 minutes in the last quarter 1-on-1 with little pressure from upfield.

26. Pattison - Another Royal who had a very good first half but was quiet in the second. Played across CHF as well as pushing up the ground. Marked and kicked well and his mobility for a big guy looked good.  Kellaway appeared to be on him but he got away from Chubba early on. Moved into the ruck in the last and did well with the tap outs.

30. Tambling - Played only the first half and like Gas appeared to be only rested. While he was one the ground he played FP. I just thought Tambo didn't make maximum use to the chances he had. He had Rainesy beaten a couple of times and just mucked it up.

31. Hyde - I didn't see him go off but it must have been very early on.

34. Hughes - That article by Goughy summed up Cleve's game well. He's got that something special for a key forward (sticky hands and a good kick) but he needs to turn glimpses of it into 4 consistent quarters. But hey he's what 18 and it's only his first pre-season so what else would you expect from a young tall. A good tussle with McGuane with honours even.

43. Howat - I must admit I didn't notice Cam until he moved onto Lids in the second half. Lids didn't have that much influence on the game so perhaps a tick to Howat.

Local Ballarat players -Royals:

20. Corey F@gg  (Moi kept asking me was a guy called Limp on the Royals side and I didn't have a clue who the hell she was talking about :lol )
36. Lee Cox - by now Moi thought I was making the names up :rollin. Actually he got a fair bit of footy in that last quarter. His introduction to AFL footy was manning up on Lids!
38. Nathan Blomeley (the sheet had Bromlie)
41. Matt Madden
42. Cam McCabe
44. John Basham - Moi loved his surname ;D

Kings (Black jumpers)

3. Lids - As I mentioned he didn't have much influence on the game. Started up forward a kicked 2 points from long distance. Moved into the middle in the second half. Probably his best quarter was the last where he was solid.

4. Raines - Matched up in a back-pocket against Tambo. Tambo got to the ball ahead of him a few times but he wasn't punished. Best quarter would of been the last too when the Kings defence got on top.

10. Stafford - Only saw him in the first quarter where he kicked a goal from a set-shot.

12. Richo - Blew them away in the last with 4 goals in succession. Gas has him early then Sarge. What was a pretty good duel between him and Sarge was blown out of the water when Richo marked, snapped and snagged everything that came his way. He's a matchbreaker and winner when on song. Obviously the Kings best with 6 goals.

15. Pettifer - Happy with Kayne's game off a HFF. Solid with a couple of goals.

16. Pat Bowden - If he can play off a wing in the real stuff for 22-25 weeks like he did today then we've got a very handy pick up. Got better as the game went along and was burning by the last linking from defence and kicking inside 50.

18. Rodan - Good solid 4 quarters from D-Rod in the midfield which not only is good for us but will give him further confidence in his knee.

20. Hall - Must admit I didn't notice Razor except for a couple of times out there. Fairly quiet.

23. Jackson - Start on Limbach and was fairly quiet in the first half. Moved forward in the second half (against Roachy) and bagged 2 quick goals to put the Kings briefly in front in the third term before finishing with another after a good mark in the goalsquare. No misses. Has he found his niche up forward? He's been playing forward during scratch matches at training.

27. Krakouer - Played well and most pleasing he didn't go missing for long periods and he has in past years. Silky skills and one of our best tacklers. Only "negative" was he and Tucky were playing wide of each other and Tucky was one of the Royals' best. It appeared the coaches wanted it that way as no message or change was made.

33. Hartigan - Solid effort from Brent. I liked his game in defence and rebounding from defensive 50.

35. White - Didn't really notice Matty today. His efforts in some of the scratch matches at training were far more influential.

38. McGuane - Had a really good duel with Hughes. Probably the first time I would say he's gone to the next level in his development. Still nowhere ready though (like Hughes only shows glimpses of what he is capable of) but if he can keep improving  then that's all you can ask at his age.

39. Kellaway - Looked to be on Patto early on and Patto got away from him. Better in the second half.

41. Foley - Was best on ground IMO up to quarter time in the midfield. Not as influential after that but still pretty good.

42. Humm - Had a fairly good game. Got a bit of the ball particularly after half-time and used it well. Good insurance as a mature rookie.

44. Graham - Centre bounce tapwork was not bad but was quiet apart from that.

Local Ballarat players - Kings:
13. Robert Young
37. Tristian May
40. Paul McMahon
43. Gerard Brick
45. Malcolm Niblett

Umpires: - Adam Davis (AFL), Martin Ellis (AFL), Jarrod Waight (VFL).

Question for MT when you get back.

I was wondering if Jacko doing well on Roach is an indication that Jacko is doing well or Roach the opposite.

Probably a bit of both Moi. Jacko's effort wasn't a one-off as he's done fairly well as a leading forward pocket in some of the scratch matches. Roachy just looked lost as a BP.

Great reports MT & Moi.  :thumbsup
One question I have though, did Hughes kick one goal or two? MT's report says one while Gough's said two?

I may have mixed Patto and Hughes up with a goal in the first quarter which I didn't see who it was. I thought it was Hughes but the guys were handslapping Patto so I gave it to him.

4. Raines - Matched up in a back-pocket against Tambo. Tambo got to the ball ahead of him a few times but he wasn't punished. Best quarter would of been the last too when the Kings defence got on top.
From what you've seen of him in training will he play in the preseason cup, whatever it's called.
You say Roachy's one you think might be in his last season.  Have to say the same for Rainsey if he doesn't get a go and do well this year.  He needs to play every game in the preseason and not sitting on the bench.
Couldn't care less if we lost the game - just want to try out some of the kids.

With 2 extra spots on the bench and no Browny, Rainesy should play. We're playing a similar young side in Hawthorn so there's even more reason to play him.

At the moment Rainsey's still a fringe player. From the guys drafted in 2003 along with him, IMO Rainsey's ahead of Roachy, on par with Jacko (hard to compare totally different players) and behind Tucky and Hartigan. Hopefully he does come on this year.

Geez, these Ballarat people hold grudges.

There is one name missing from the BFL's list of BFL players who played in the intra-club match at Learmonth yesterday.

Matty White.

He is from Sunbury. Played for Sunbury Lions who everyone knows is hated by Ballarat people.

I hear that some of the Ballarat Tigers said some not too nice words to Matty at Wednesday nights dinner, when he responded to their question, Where did you play footy before Tigerland?

There have been some Sunbury idiots do some well publicised stupid things in the BFL but surely these Ballarat Tiger faithful support all our Tiger players, no matter where they come from?
