Tyrone Vickery, Ben Griffiths among Richmond’s list management dilemmas

WHILE attention has been focused on Damien Hardwick this season, there are more questions surrounding a sizeable group of uncontracted senior Richmond players in 2016.
The Tigers have 10 players coming out of contract who either have been — or are becoming — regulars in their senior 22 this year. It is a situation that industry insiders view as favourable to the Tigers, who need flexibility to make trades and improve their fragile list and have secured all of their stars.
Of that ten players coming out of contract, three are youngsters who are assured of being offered deals and are clearly part of the club’s plans — Nick Vlastuin, Corey Ellis and Conor Menadue. It is just a question of the terms that trio will be offered.
The remaining senior seven players consist of half a dozen talls — Tyrone Vickery is a restricted free agent this year, while one of the heroes of the upset over Sydney, forward Ben Griffiths, remains out of contract, as do ruckman Shaun Hampson and key back David Astbury.
The half dozen talls out of contract are completed by the veteran pair of Ivan Maric and Troy Chaplin, whose both turned 30 this year and whose future beyond this year is doubtful, given that both have been dropped to the VFL in the course of the club’s disappointing first eight rounds.
Midfielder Shaun Grigg, who has been an automatic selection, is also without a contract for 2017 at this stage.
Griffiths, still just 24, has shown talent — he booted five goals against the Swans in a match-turning performance — but has struggled for consistency. As a tall forward, he attracted interest from rival clubs, including the Bulldogs, when he signed a two-year deal in late 2014.
Vickery has improved over the past 18 months and is well regarded by the Tigers, but is still a free agent. It is noteworthy that Vickery and Griffiths play somewhat similar roles — and Richmond would surely want to retain at least one of them.
Hampson has not been a consistent performer in the ruck, but his position is strengthened by the apparent decline of Maric. It is possible, though, that Richmond could look for another ruck in the trading/free agency market. Young tall forward Liam McBean is also out of contract.
The Tigers have all of their elite “fab five’’ - Alex Rance, Brett Deledio, Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin — under contract for 2017.

If Richmond used their forwards the way they meant to be used, They would be the most dangerous combination in the league. Play long & direct football & use these guys marking the ball. 200 cm men are a huge advantage in any side. Vickery & Griffiths can both kick the ball good. Griffiths at CHF kicking goals outside the 50 & Vickery at FF with Riewoldt roaming the forward line with Lloyd, Rioli, Edwards, Martin can't be any sweeter. Have faith in the players ability to beat their opponent & RFC will see a huge improvement.

Yeah nah, pee 'em both off...
...should be going hard at Tomlinson too...

I agree

Pump up their trade value for the end of the year and then try to get some good picks for them.

Reckon we need one of them unfortunately. Unless we get something good in a trade. As much as they suck, we have nothing else until a few of the young ones come on if they ever do

Not sure it's that simple. Vickery and Griffiths are probably average KPF's at best based of their careers so far.
Agree that we probably can't afford to let them both go. If Ty gets a big offer and could get us a 1st rounder compo he'd be the one I'd have no problem with losing.
-
We can absolutely afford to let them both go....in fact I'd go even further and say if we really want to improve our list in we probably can't afford not to....

What KPF's would we have left other than Jack? McBean, Chol, potentially C Moore and maybe a couple draftees. That leaves you extremely thin.
I'm all for giving kids games in front of proven mediocre performances but I'm not sure that works for KPF's. Think you can actually do real harm to them and their confidence by forcing games into then.
I don't particularly rate Griff or Vickery but just think whilst we nurture a few more talents we need to keep one of them around.

Going long works if your tall forwards can be mobile and also have strong marking ability in packs. Griffiths and particularly Vickery fall down in the strong contested marking area...sadly

Griff can take a contested mark he just need a confidence boost, which he got. Vickery is just plain shocking. Plays like a girl, I'd be looking to get rid of him

Hardest hands in football. In fact id go 1 step further and say Vickery has trampoline hands.

Does well with a jumper punch though

Trampoline Hands - very good might use that one.
The frustrating thing is Vickery actually gets into position to take these marks enough times during a game but if there is the slightest pressure from a defender he fails to complete the task

At training they have no problem so l can't see why they can't play like they train. Our problem is when we play long & direct we score freely. But if you got dummies like Bellis playing circle work down the halfback line or going backwards with his mates :banghead Our forwards are useless. Riewoldt spends far too much time down the ground & when they need to move the ball fast guess what. No-one is in the forward 50 in fact they are so far pushed up each others asses down the other half of the ground, That the people paying to watch football at the other end need to watch the screens ;D They may as well stay home & pay for fox footy & get access to all games :lol l really hate how football is played in the modern way. l like one on one biffs bumps & brawls anyday

Jack goes back when the team is too crap to get the ball forward
He often plays very well creating goals with smarts and talent
When be is forward he's often got three guys on him
Not usless

Now where did l say Jack was useless. My statement was Our forwards are useless when you got Bellis dancing around in circles down back. Who he hell is going to present a 30 metre red hot lead when you got Bellis first impression is to be looking backwards cause the other dummies are calling him to go backwards. Chaplin Rance Astbury Grimes Cotchin Martin BELLIS all guilty at doing this. There is no use making a red hot lead if the ball is working backwards or sideways & not gaining a metre for your own side. This renders all your forwards useless. Not useless players. Useless being out there. Now if l was the back line coach the first thing l would be instructing is move the ball forward. Since Leppa has left Tigerland, Our back line & forward line are not working. Now if l was head coach Both them coaches would be sacked. Chocco would be sacked. 3-4 of them would be sacked
