Richmond coach Damien Hardwick likens Dustin Martin to Patrick Dangerfield

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has described Dustin Martin's year to date as "outstanding" and has likened his star midfielder to Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Dangerfield.
Martin, who is now arguably the hardest player to tackle in the league, has been in career-best form this season, averaging a personal best 26 disposals per game along with 10 contested possessions.
Hardwick has put the 24-year-old's improvement down to maturity as well as elevated fitness levels and contested ball work.
"Those sort of players, Patty Dangerfield is probably a little bit the same, those guys can take the ball, take the hit and then deliver the ball," Hardwick said at Punt Road Oval on Thursday.
"It's not only his contested-possession numbers that are important, it's also the metres gained ... those sort of players are invaluable, really.
"He's played predominantly forward/mid, now he's probably playing a lot more midfield.
"I've been really impressed with his work rate and his ability to win contested ball. We sort of knew it would come and we're really pleased that it's come to the fore at the moment.
"When we needed him to stand up when (captain) Trent (Cotchin) was out (with a cheekbone injury), he did that which is a sign of his maturity level as a player."
Having won consecutive games for the first time this season, after making a 1-6 start, Hardwick felt that the tide was turning for his side, especially now that he had close to a full list of players to choose from.
A win over Essendon this week could see the Tigers get within a game of the top eight.
"We probably always knew the tide would turn, that confidence in our players and the ability to play the game would improve," Hardwick said.
"It's probably taken a little bit longer than we would have liked but we're still not playing quite to a level of expectation that I'd like but we're certainly on the improve.
"We're starting to get our list in some pretty good shape ... competition for spots is fierce.
"We're in a good place at the moment which is important."
Hardwick confirmed emerging star Daniel Rioli would return for the Dreamtime at the 'G clash with Essendon on Saturday night after sitting out last week's win over Fremantle due to a family illness.
The Richmond boss described the week leading into the Indigenous round as "special".
"I was very fortunate to play with a lot of Indigenous players but what I've learned over the course of my time is the amazing spiritual level of the Indigenous boys, the culture that they bring and the customs that they're about as an Indigenous race is something I wasn't really taught at school," he said.
"But once you get to know the players, it's incredible the things that they've done ... it's a special occasion and we're very fortunate to be on the podium, so to speak, with this great game."
Hardwick intimated that Corey Ellis and Reece Conca were in the mix to return to the senior line-up but Ivan Maric would probably have to bide his time in the VFL with Shaun Hampson in good form.

RICHMOND will back key forward Ty Vickery to rebound from last week's two-possession game against Fremantle, with coach Damien Hardwick guaranteeing his selection for Saturday night's clash against Essendon.
Vickery has battled through a quiet fortnight, going goalless against the Sydney Swans and the Dockers and taking just two marks in that time.
He registered just one kick and one handball against the Dockers last Saturday night, and gave away three free kicks in horror conditions that Hardwick said provided a partial alibi.
"It was incredibly windy and incredibly wet, but in saying that Ty can play better," the coach said on Thursday.
"He knows that. He didn't get to enough contests last week, but he did the week prior.
"Ty will play."
Vickery has kicked 14.12 this season, with his last purple patch coming against Hawthorn in round seven when he kicked back-to-back goals before being taken from the ground.
He has kicked three goals in a game on three occasions this season and Hardwick said the 25-year-old had runs on the board when it came to selection.
"We know he can play some really good football and he's an important player to us," the coach said.
"He's one of the keystones to our forward line and we look forward to him playing a good game this week.
"He's been in some good form, his last couple of weeks have been a little bit down but good players bounce back.
"We expect him to do so."
First-year forward Daniel Rioli looks certain to return for Saturday night's Dreamtime at the 'G match after missing last week's trip to Perth because of a family illness.
Rioli returned to the Northern Territory last week but was back at the club on Monday, with Damien Hardwick struggling to contain his excitement when talking about the skilful forward.
"He adds a spark up there and he kicked a couple of crucial goals in his last game against the Swans," the coach said.
"He'll be putting his hand up to play and I think it's almost a certainty he'll come back in."
The tide is starting to turn for Richmond after back-to-back wins, with players returning from injury and competition for spots at a premium.
Young midfielder Corey Ellis is available after being rested against the Dockers, while Reece Conca will likely continue his return from a hamstring injury through the VFL.
Vice-captain Ivan Maric, meanwhile, will have to bide his time before breaking back into the senior team given Shaun Hampson's form in the ruck.
"Ivan, as we know, is a real competitor and he's started to play some better football at VFL level on the weekend," Hardwick said.
"The situation at hand is that rucks very rarely get through unscathed.
"At some point we expect to call upon Ivan and we expect him to answer that call. He's an important player for us."

Saw Raines play and this is an easy call for me

Raines could win his own ball but ultimately was a buffalo girl, but he was silk.
If you are getting well beaten in clearances Martin can turn that around, I doubt raines could have.

“We know it would come, and we’re really pleased that it’s come to the fore at the moment, because he’s playing some outstanding footy,” Hardwick said.
“He had a couple of quiet ones early in the piece, but the last four weeks have been fantastic. When we needed him to stand up when (captain Trent Cotchin) was out, he did that, which is a sign of his maturity level as a player.
“He’s been a pretty good player for a period of time, even when he first came in, but the good thing about Dustin is he’s always improving.
“Every year, he’s added something to his game and that’s the quality of player that he is. We expect that to continue.”
