Match preview: Richmond v Gold Coast
AFL.com.au
6 June 2016
SUMMARY
Richmond's season has hit the skids again and there is little hope of a revival now after a 70-point loss to North Melbourne in round 11. So far this season the Tigers have been able to cling to their recovery missions of 2013-15, when they won nine of their last 12 games, but a repeat of those heroics looks unlikely on form. Their last and arguably most deflating defeat was made worse by the loss of Steven Morris (knee), who is now sidelined for the rest of the season. Still, Richmond will be favoured to account for a Gold Coast team that has not won since round three. The Suns battled on at a waterlogged Metricon Stadium in round 11, eventually losing to the Sydney Swans by 38 points. It was their eighth consecutive loss, but coach Rodney Eade said his team had grown in the torrid conditions.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday, June 12, 3.20pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R20, 2015, Richmond 22.6 (138) d Gold Coast 8.7 (55) at the MCG
R1, 2014, Gold Coast 12.15 (87) d Richmond 10.9 (69) at Metricon Stadium
R16, 2013, Richmond 6.17 (53) d Gold Coast 6.8 (44) at Cazalys Stadium
R16, 2012, Gold Coast 13.12 (90) d Richmond 13.10 (88) at Cazalys Stadium
R17, 2011, Gold Coast 12.13 (85) d Richmond 9.16 (70) at Cazalys Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Richmond thrashed Gold Coast in the second half the last time the sides played, kicking 14 goals to three. Ty Vickery kicked four goals and Dustin Martin was best on ground with 29 disposals, six tackles and three goals.
2. Since winning their first three games, the Suns have lost eight consecutive matches. Five of their defeats have been by more than 50 points, conceding an average score of 132 points a game.
3. The Suns are ranked second-last for inside 50s this season, averaging 46.1 a game. Theyre ranked 14th for scoring with an average of 80 points a game.
4. Richmond is ranked equal-eighth in centre clearances with an average of 13.5 a game. This should be an advantage against the Suns, who rank 16th with an average of 11.5 a game.
5. Gold Coast will be looking for its first win at the MCG since round five, 2014. The Suns have played nine times at the MCG in their history for two wins.
6. Richmond midfielder Shaun Grigg has climbed 25 spots in the Schick AFL Player Ratings in the past fortnight. He had a career-high 38 possessions against North Melbourne in round 11.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR
Brandon Ellis.
The Tigers midfielder was forced to re-live his elimination final nightmare in round 11 when Sam Gibson kept him to just seven possessions and one inside 50. It's been an up and down season for the 22-year-old, who racked up 39 possessions against Adelaide in round three but has dropped below 20 on four occasions. For the first time in his five seasons Ellis looks vulnerable at selection and he will be keen to respond in his 100th game.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 24 points

I know won't happen. But i hope we lose by 10 goals. Make something happen.
-
Contradicting myself from earlier in the year. But this is far frlm what is acceptable.
-
You're not a real fan - back our boys or stuff off!
-
Feel like we are the middle child .
Last week we had our pants pulled down by big brother in a humiliating display.
Now we are competing with baby brother in a game where victory means diddly squat.
We will win , and probably the following week too and become 6-7 . Dimma will still be talking up our finals chances.
Then another acid test against Port which predictably will result in another reality check.
-
You're not a real fan - back our boys or stuff off!
Hence my comments. You love to pick a fight lol
-
I know won't happen. But i hope we lose by 10 goals. Make something happen.
If dimma, the selectors, recruiters and players hadn't put themselves in this position then we wouldn't have to hope for a flogging by a bottom side for the penny to drop and for meaningful change towards long ter,m success to begin

he's actually holding the long term success of the club to ransom by trying to save his own (and his mates) arses.

Gee talk about tin foil hats, I think yours is on a little tight

Hardly unusual for a coach, particularly one under the pump, to coach for his career and immediate results, at the expense of their club's longer term prospects.....Wallace virtually built his entire career around it....you could probably almost say the same for Ross Lyon before this year...although at least he gets close to flags...(but then so did Wallace at Footscray)
-
The media is hoping we lose on Sunday so they can rant about us for another week to boost their ratings.
This from Barrett:
IF ... the Suns beat the Tiges at the 'G on Sunday ...
THEN ... oh boy. Don't want to sound like Bruce McAvaney here, but they couldn't, could they?

Oh...but we can can't we.....we can...
-
Oh...but we can can't we.....we can...
Of course we will win ......this year reeks of the Wallace era , in particular 05 , 06 , and 08 . Miles off the top teams but good enough to beat teams around us or the ones who have already put the cue back in the rack.
Another vanilla pick 10/11/12 to look forward to.

I recall you saying practically the same thing when the experts of the forum tried to point out over the off season that our list and the club were on a backwards slide from finals.
Anyway, I hope everything works out for you in the long run and please do believe your opinions and you are special

I'd eat my hat if there was even the slightest proof I ever said such a thing. Unless you are trying to say I defended the club when others attacked it after finals which if that's the case is completely different. Enjoy your continued skepticism, I hope it brings you more joy than it appears to be.
-
How is it skepticism ?
It's a measured assessment of the current and ongoing circumstances, that are the RFC.

These turnovers have come at a significant cost to both sides this year. The Tigers have conceded an average of 63.4 points to their opposition per game (ranked 15th) while the Suns have conceded 71.9 points per game (ranked 18th) from the same source.

What a poor standard game :P.
Once again our brilliant set shot goalkicking is on display. Two bad misses already ::).
Getting smashed in the centre clearances :help.
-
Same old same old.....two mediocre sides just showing why they are where they are...
Can't run both ways, too lazy and poorly coached.
Tearing it up on the training track though.. :lol
Scores level, wouldn't be surprised if the Suns creamed us.. :snidegrin
-
Lights are on here. And thats the highlight of the game so far
-
Conca. Lmao
Hunt lmao
Hardwick lmao
-
God we are a boring side to watch, no flair, no excitement just mechanical and ineffective. :sleep
-
We allow whoever the opposition is to set the pace and dictate game style, then they try to apply dimmer's twisted, loser, pre thought strategies to the given predicament
FMD
Dusty is a star tho
-
:lol
-
God we are a boring side to watch, no flair, no excitement just mechanical and ineffective. :sleep
My watching Richmond routine is me on the tablet on forums occasionally looking up to the TV
-
Without Dusty we would not be in front. A class above. Once again we rely too heavily on our top players to get us over the line even against rubbish sides.
It's amazing how simple the game is when you start winning centre clearances and get the ball moving forward quickly. The problem is if we aren't winning centre clearances we get slowed up. Our players are so dumb they ignore the quick open corridor option out of defence that would open the Suns right up and instead stick to short keep possession option as though we're playing the Swans or Hawks.
Conca lmao
Hunt lmao
Not the future by all means but Hunt has been far from our worst (which is an indictment on the rest of the team).
Conca shutdown Ablett who was cutting us up at the centrebounces.
-
16 points up, that means it's showtime for the tiges, cue in the rack, party trick time
-
8 points...
-
16 points up, that means it's showtime for the tiges, cue in the rack, party trick time
Yep, back to getting cut up in the centre clearances and umpteenth mistackles.
ps. Hope the Suns player is okay. Incidental/accidental contact but that looked a bad concussion. Knee to the back of the head and then head first into the turf.
-
Nasty
-
If we lose, which looks like a distinct possibility, will Dimma tell us again that there will be changes? :lol
-

Not a day for goal kickers

Gold coast want it more. Getting killed out of the centre this q

:lol
-

Anotherone for the highlights package lololololol
-
Not knowing there were only seconds to go. Just goes to show we are the dumbest football team :facepalm.
Once the opposition close down our top players and we don't win centre clearances, the whole team shuts down, we don't get the ball moving forward and it's game over!
If only we were tanking :rollin.
-

Exactly
-
Astbury looks to have done a calf/achilles.
That last play that lead to a Suns goal sums it up. We get a turnover with an open forward line and we still can't find an open forward because we're too slow ;facepalm. After stuffing up our chances, the opposition run it down into an open forward line and goal.
-
Rance getting shown up tonight :-\
-
Yep he's been panted by Lynch. Can see why some people are saying they rate him the best young KPF in the Comp, he's a gem
-
Holy poo
-
We love to tease. Another kick in it game.
-
Hampson contested mark forward :gobdrop
-
C'mon tiges!!!
Let's turn a potential top 3 pick into a 6-10 pick
-
And he kicks straight too unlike his teammates :rollin :lol
-
Yep he's been panted by Lynch. Can see why some people are saying they rate him the best young KPF in the Comp, he's a gem
Yep apart from a few iffy fumbles and kicks and trailing too far behind his man he hasn't even been bad just Lynch too good tonight.
LOL Hampson now we won't hear the end of how good he is. At least he knew which way we were going this time
-
C'mon tiges!!!
Let's turn a potential top 3 pick into a 6-10 pick
Sad isn't it :lol
-
:lol and let's keep talking finals up
-
How good is Dusty :clapping.
-
Dusty .... daylight the rest!
-
Cue in the rack again?
-
What's really sad is we only got 80 posts in oer on the game. A lot of people have checked out. This ought to have been an easy win week too. Has everyone gone on holidays?
-
Conca did alright in his comeback game.
-
Park Conca up for trade. Shouldn't of won this game, setting ourselves up for 9th.
Must start losing... :pray
-
Ok back from the game and have had a feed.
Now, thought today was dissapointing against a weak suns side. Shows we are about where we should be on the ladder. Still killed in the middle allowing the opposition to get a run on. Still confused players kicking backward and sidewards
Martin very good. Cotchin quite good. Deledio hot and cold.
I liked Griffs game with some good contested marks.
I thought Rance was beaten.
Vickery was deplorable with his repeated 1 handed marking attemprs. Batchelor, whilst not directly costing us goals, made some terrible errors.
-
I wanted to highlight shorts game today. Thought he looked solid. Can see why his kicking was rated so highly as a junior, precision passes time and again. Would like to see us pursue the experiment of Short in the backline. Could be an upgrade on houli? Just please - I hope he can at least defend
-
Love the look of the kid Short. Amazing penetration in those kicks and has courage :clapping

Well spotted Tone, Shorty's disposal in general was excellent today. Very reliable by foot & nicely composed when under pressure. 8)
-
Thought rance was very good.
-
Thought rance was very good.
Rance was good because Rance is always good, but good isn't great! His direct opponent took 10 marks & kicked 4.2! Kicked a howler OOTF & walked into a big tackle to give up another goal ...
All said Rance was one of our best, as usual, but I've seen him play better! :-\
-
yep agreed JP, Rance was good as per usual but he was beaten today. No shame in it, even the best get beaten on occassion. Lynch is nigh on impossible to spoil on the lead, massive reach and hits the ball at full pace
-
Gave up at least 6 goals...saved at least another 10....
-
Lynch was very impressive today . A gun of the competition.
-
Lynch was very impressive today . A gun of the competition.
Sure is a gun.
Should have been a Tiger too.
But no, we drafted Conca instead.
-
Rance shouldn't be playing on 2m tall people.
Another mistake by Richmond not developing a tall defender in the last 7 years
-
Jayden Short was good too .
-
Great match-up on Wright..... :clapping
-
It was a very poor game particularly the third quarter. Martin won us the game. He was absolutely brilliant. Thought Cotchin played well and Griffiths was okay as well. Jack had a quiet game and Lids was in and an out of the game. Edwards also played well-kicked a critical goal. To me the game highlighted that we have a very poor game plan. The indecision in the defence cost us multiple goals and the indecision in the defence is caused by trying to follow a game plan that is flawed. We allowed their forwards too much space hence Lynch took some straight forward chest marks.
-

I liked his game as well, shame he got caught a couple of times trying to cover peoples men and having no where near enough height but good on him for at least making a contest out of it.
Hard to tell on the tellie but did anyone at the game notice if he often have a direct match up or was he floating around?

Thought we should have had Heppel?

Grigg. Probably having his best season at the club.
While he is playing his role well, don't mind him. However, as one of Dimma's favourites, never gets dropped even after stinking it up. Hence we correctly judge him harshly.
-
Take the win & enjoy it. There won't be many more this season
:gotigers
-
Take the win & enjoy it. There won't be many more this season
:gotigers
Based on 2016 form ....could be as little as 2/3 more wins this year.
-
We'll be lucky to win more than another 3-4 max, either way there's no finals campaign let alone a run at the flag.
Elton + McBean + Lennon + Broad in. Chaplin + Vickery + Hunt + Batchelor out & stay out.
-
Do u think the players know the club is a piece of poo, as it can only beat poo teams?
-
BTW, did anyone see what happened to Cotchin for him to get that free kick pretty early in the last Q?

IIRC he got a whack to the head after their goal

Yep I reckon everyone know deep down the bottom six are plodders and it'll be shown next elimination final for the 4th time
-

Which one?
After the suns goal (Nicholls?) it appears someone whacks him in the back of the head but it's off camera and he get's a free in the middle which he went on to set up Edwards goal. They never revisited it

Yeah but I was looking for more details than that...
