Eight teams named for inaugural women's league
Bruce Matthews
June 15, 2016 1:21 PM

TRADITIONAL heavyweights Carlton and Collingwood join Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs as the Victorian contingent in the first year of the AFL national women's league.

Fremantle has edged out West Coast in the battle of the west to be the Perth-based team in the eight-club inaugural competition.

Adelaide, Brisbane Lions and Greater Western Sydney are the other non-Victorian clubs to compete in the eight-week season in February-March next year.

The other AFL club applicants, Richmond, Geelong, North Melbourne and St Kilda, along with the Eagles, have been granted provisional licences to be part of an expanded women's league in 2018, depending on development of the game in their areas.

Club's response
============

Club Statement: National Women's League
richmondfc.com.au
June 15, 2016 12:14 PM
Richmond was today advised by the AFL it had been unsuccessful in its bid for a licence in the AFL’s National Women’s League.

While the Club is disappointed with the decision it will in no way diminish the Club’s efforts to drive the gender equity and diversity agenda in elite sport.

In many ways, Richmond has led the way in promoting diversity, inclusion and gender equity.

Three years ago, the Club approached the AFL and the Australian Sports Commission and asked them to join as partners in a research project that would identify how elite sport could be more inclusive for women. That research has informed meaningful change.

As part of that project, Richmond was instrumental in establishing the Elite Sport Male Champions of Change, comprising 13 CEO’s from seven different sports where collective decisions could be made on advancing women in all aspects of sport.

These, and other actions, have been undertaken because it is the right thing to do. While we believed this track record would have us well-placed when the AFL considered NWL licences, securing a licence was never the reason we committed to gender equity.

Despite today’s decision, we will remain as determined as ever to driving equity and diversity outcomes.

Personally, I couldn't be happier.

Its a closed loop at Tigerland. Round and round we go. And again. And again and again and again and again. Who knows what will happen next........

Our entire set up at VFL level is poor

I understand the club's primary focus is supposedly development and not necessarily wins (though it would be good if they actually communicated this the members & supporters but that's another story). though I'd argue development includes instilling a winning culture.

But that is no excuse for putting together a poor VFL list. I have said this many many times, the majority of our VFL listed players are not to VFL standard. And because of the weakness in the VFL list (ie our VFL listed players) it impacts on the development of our AFL listed kids.

Club has tried to do the VFL thing on the cheap IMESHO rather investing in it as heavily as they should. It was initially funded by members / supporters via the FTF (and to certain extent still is) & I think they deserve better than what we currently see with our VFL "program". Simply compared to the other AFL sides fielding stand alone VFL sides our program /system is below standard.

Again just my opinion.

I can't believe the amount of press this is getting.

This is not going to be a high rater or high attendance sport.

I really don't give a poo about it.

It all depends on the standard of footy. If it ends up being Division 4 ammos standard or something roughly similar i cant imagine it will captivate the nation.

If what we've seen the last few years (Doggies -v- Dees) is going to be the standard, then it will be great. Those games have been good to watch, better than some of the VFL games and I'm not just talking abput RFC VFL games either

I find that very hard to believe. An under 15 Newcastle side beat the women's australian soccer team 8-2 recently. If the best women footballers in Australia played an under 16 boys team, u16 would win 20+ goals. You have may have enjoyed the women's afl game yet there is not a snowflakes chance in hell it's up to d4 ammo standard let alone Vfl

Edit 7-0

Does that include individual sports like Golf, tennis, squash or shooting?

I think your right about most team sports though. But I'd guess that the world champion women's European handball side would beat most amateur men's team.

They'll only be getting $20k each not $150k+

But in answer to your question my personal view is no

For the same reasons i dont believe women tennis players should get the same prize money at grand slams as men. They wont be doing the same amount of work.

Womens AFL season is only going for 8-10 weeks so just based on that they cant be paid the same IMHO

In regard to women's tennis I think the argument put forward is about which gender creates the most revenue as opposed to the length of the matches.

A repetitious station like fox footy would love this womens league.  This will simply replace the now defunct foxtel cup.....and I suspect will be about as popular.
