Rookie Draft preview
4:19:34 PM Mon 12 December, 2005
Matt Burgan
Sportal for afl.com.au
A total of 60 selections will be on offer at this year's NAB AFL Rookie Draft on Tuesday, giving youngsters the opportunity to potentially forge or continue an AFL career.
Although it's unlikely that all 60 picks will be utilised - expect 40 to 50 players to be selected - it is now a significant draft for AFL clubs.
Some of the 18 year olds that were overlooked in November that are likely to figure prominently in the Rookie Draft - or possibly even the Pre-Season Draft - include Jace Bode (Sturt), Angus Graham (Calder Cannons), Todd Grima (Northern Bombers), Sam Iles (Clarence), Ryan Jackson (Northern Knights), Tom Looby (Murray Bushrangers), Luke McEntee (North Adelaide), Tom Rischbieth (Sturt), Matthew Thomas (Sandringham Dragons) and Alan Toovey (Claremont).
Ever since triple premiership player Mal Michael became the first 'rookie' to play an AFL match in 1997, the system has blossomed into an important vehicle for clubs to access players outside of the mainstream NAB AFL Draft held in November.
Advertising
And a number of players selected in the Rookie Draft are playing in the AFL just months after they are claimed in this meeting.
Bulldog Dale Morris can testify to that after he was drafted last December, before playing 17 AFL matches in 2005. He also went on to represent Australia - with distinction - against Ireland in this year's International Rules Series.
Not only does it offer youngsters an opportunity to gain a place on an AFL list, it also allows clubs to nurture and develop youngsters with a view to finding potential senior-listed players at cost-effective price.
It might be a player overlooked in the November NAB AFL Draft, a delisted AFL player, a 'mature' state-based player or that ever elusive 'smoky'. And the 'smoky' is still alive and well in the drafting process. Just ask St Kilda recruiting manager John Beveridge, who selected James Gwilt and Justin Sweeney in past two main drafts.
The Rookie Draft has been so beneficial to some clubs in recent times that there is a theory among the industry that it is almost as important as the main draft.
The belief is that if clubs have late picks in the November draft, then it is almost the equivalent of having early selections in the Rookie Draft. The only difference is that the rookies can be acquired at a bargain-basement price.
And when you consider Nathan Bassett, Dean Cox, Aaron Davey, Chad Fletcher, Mark Johnson, Tadhg Kennelly, Brett Kirk, Stephen Milne, Russell Robertson and Ben Rutten were originally rookies - it only further emphasises the importance of this meeting.
In many respects, this is a great opportunity for recruiting managers to think outside of the square, take a punt or back their ability to pick a gem from the rough.
AFL players will emerge from this Rookie Draft - there is no doubt about it - but only time will tell which players there are.
Tuesday will also provide a second opportunity for delisted players under the age of 23.
Players such as ex-Demon Steven Armstrong, ex-Lions Tom Logan and Llane Spaanderman are among the names with AFL experience likely to be selected as rookies.
But for the likes of former Bombers Damian Cupido and Marc Bullen and ex-Hawk Steven Greene it means that the Pre-Season Draft is their only hope of entering back onto an AFL list, as the trio was born in 1982.
They are already 23 years old and the criterion stipulates that a rookie must be under the age of 23 years on 31 December when drafted. Players must also be 18 years on or before 31 December. Therefore players born from 1983-87 are eligible for this meeting.
It looms as yet another fascinating draft meeting.

The big rumour is were keen on Graham, and also White!
-
Don't forget Sylvester ;)
BTW I think there is merit in changing the rookie rules by allowing each club if they chose to, to take one mature age roookie being blokes aged between 23-25.

We used our PSD pick No 5 on Matthew White from the Cannons

Angus Graham
Details:
Club: Tasmania/Assumption College/Calder
DOB: 16 April 1987 Hgt: 197cm Wgt: 91kg
Position: Ruck/Forward
Natural Foot: Right
Honours:
Tasmanian U18 2005
AFL Draft Camp 2005
Statistics:
2005 TAC Cup: 1 game, 0 goals, average 5.0 PPG
2005 Under 18 Championships: 3 games, 0 goals, average 10.3 PPG
Draft Camp:
Height: 200.3cm (3rd)
Mass: 92.6kg (4th)
Vertical Jump: 65cm (equal 10th)
Background:
Played a lot of footy this year and looked pretty tired towards the end of the season. With school footy for Assumption College, TAC for Calder and State footy for Tasmania, Graham had a busy season. Still quite a raw player, Graham has plenty to learn, but at the same time has a lot to work with.
Strengths:
- Raw/Continually improving
- For a big bloke he uses it well enough by foot and is clean at ground level
- Will back back to mark/courage, but sometimes needs to improve marking efforts
Weaknesses:
- Strength
- Endurance
Footy Draft verdict:
Maybe around the place for a late draft pick. On the learning approach still and could be a good developing ruck or key position prospect.

Jeremy Humm
Height 182cm
Weight: 82kg
Recruited From: Royal Park/Ballarat U18
Debut: 2001
Date of Birth: 5 January 1983
ABOUT
Acquired with selection 36 in the 2000 National Draft, Humm made his debut for the West Coast Eagles in his first year at the club and proved serviceable as a small defender. Notably tough in the clinches, he had played 22 games to the start of 2005 and would have hoped to build on that tally before the prospect was ruined by a major ankle injury that sidelined him for the majority of the year. A popular member of the squad, the Victorian was de-listed at season’s end.

Very happy about picking up Graham. What the rookie draft is all about.
Not sure why we picked up Humm though unless the idea is to have a ready made player in waiting if someone suffers a long-term injury or to add a experienced 23 year old to Coburg's young squad. He was a fringe player at the Eagles.

Miller was just on SEN (12.30pm):
* Thought the Pies were after Matt White as they were talking to him also so we took him in the PSD. Excellent prospect.
* White - 15.2 beep. Did a 2km training run with us and did better than anyone on senior list :o. Played 15-16 games this year but got injured and missed most of the finals.
* We had relays at training the other day and Matt White was the only one who could match Lids. White is built in the upper body so could run out the 400m.
* There will be a mini olympics at the Fan's training night with a sprint to see who's the fastest - presumably Lids, Tambo, Oaks and White :thumbsup.
* Humm - we almost missed the fact that he was eligible. He came to train with us and impressed. We looked at his tapes etc. Missed most of this year with an ankle but is all fit now.
* Graham one of 3 ruckman taken in the top 5. Once Jackson and Toovey went we knew we would get a ruckman.
-
We used our PSD pick No 5 on Matthew White from the Cannons
Question?
I'm assuming the kid didn't put a price on his head ;D
so....
Does White automatically get a 2 year deal like the kids do in the National Draft or is it up to the Club?

How the newest Tigers shape up
12:55:06 PM Tue 13 December, 2005
richmondfc.com.au
Here’s a summary of the players Richmond snared today in the AFL’s pre-season and rookie drafts . . .
PRE-SEASON DRAFT PICK-UP
MATTHEW WHITE
Date of Birth: 25/2/1987
Height: 178.8cm
Weight: 78kg
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Position: Midfield
Made his TAC Cup debut back in 2003 as a 16-year-old for the Calder Cannons and also represented Vic Metro team in the under-16 championships. Is hard at the ball, possesses a good work ethic, and has the rare ability to combine exceptional endurance with genuine leg speed. Improved his decision-making ability with his kicking throughout the 2005 season and has shown that he’s more than capable around stoppages. Despite missing a few games through injury (including the under-18 carnival), he really started to develop as an on-baller at TAC Cup level midway through the year. Caused problems for opposition teams with his blistering pace and stamina.
ROOKIE DRAFT PICK-UPS
ANGUS GRAHAM
Date of Birth: 16/4/1987
Height: 200.3cm
Weight: 92.6kg
Recruited from: Tasmania/Assumption College/Calder Cannons
Position: Ruck
Developed at a rapid rate throughout 2005, playing about 40 games of football all-up for Assumption College, Calder Cannons (TAC Cup) and Tasmania (in the under-18 championships). Is genuine ruck size and has impressed with his palming of the ball. Uses the ball quite well by foot, is clean at ground level, aerobically sound, and his marking is improving. The Richmond Rookie Club’s selection.
JEREMY HUMM
Date of Birth: 5/1/83
Height: 182cm
Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: West Coast Eagles (originally from North Ballarat under-18s)
Position: Half-back/midfield
Made his senior league debut with the West Coast Eagles in 2001, but found it hard to establish himself as a permanent member of their strong line-up, managing 22 games in his five seasons there. Was a member of WAFL club East Perth’s back-to-back premiership teams of 2001-02. Missed almost the entire 2005 season with a severe ankle injury. Has good skills, plenty of courage, and can play a role either in defence or the midfield.
CAMERON HOWAT
Date of Birth: 30/1/87
Height: 181.5cm
Weight: 77kg
Recruited from: Box Hill Hawks
Position: Midfield
Was highly recommended to Richmond by new Coburg Tiger coach Andy Collins, who coached him at Box Hill. An on-baller, who possesses outstanding aerobic capacity, good skills and is hard at it. Finished fourth in Box Hill’s Best and Fairest this year.

ANGUS GRAHAM
Height: 200.3cm
Weight: 92.6kg
Sheesh one big boy for an 18 year old. And he was still growing this year :o given he was listed at 197cm by footydraft,.
His nickname has to be "Young" or "Acca Dacca" :thumbsup.
-
We shoulda quit after taking Graham. I get the feeling Miller felt compelled to draft lower because of moneys raised by outsiders. Im sure Coburg will thank those supporters for Jeremy Humm.

Agree Ramps. Picking up a guy who's been an an AFL list for 5 years seems a wasted selection.
It would have been great if we could have had scored a young raw KP backman instead. Would have finished the draft off nicely. Either that or just pass and save the club money.
-
Pleased with the White selection, although i would of preferred it to be a rookie selection but i guess whats done is done.
Very pleased with the Graham kid, i think he'll be big given 3-4 years to develop!
Very peeed off with the Humm selection.
Don't know what to make of the Howat selection, comes off as a "freinds of the coaching staff" pick though!
-
Im sure Coburg will thank those supporters for Jeremy Humm.
Putting my Coburg hat on for minute here - I'd still preferred to see Jarrod Sylvestor as Coburg's first RFC rookie than Humm in Coburg colours :'( ;D
-
Coburg = Calder Cannons under 21's! ;)
-
Just noticed Simon Phillips was rookied by Sydney.
This is rather ironic, as Simon and his brother Chris were nothing but "premiership hunters" in their junior days, year to year they moved to different footy and cricket clubs, who had the best chance of winning a premiership, and now he has been rookied by the reigning premiers!
Good luck to Simon, i only wonder how long it'll take him to get his head punched in for mouthing off and being a smartass to everyone around him, and for his drug problems to (re)arise! :santa
-
Graham
Good pickup (would have preferred Grima though). If he can pull a Cox and be our future No.1 Ruckman it will let Patto play more as a permanent CHF.
Humm
What the hell was Miller thinking, Humm is a dud, hasn't shown anything at WC and i seriously doubt he will do anything at Richmond. Brennan Mills who i think missed being drafted would have been better IMO
Howat
What's the mail on Howat, don't know much about him except that he is a tagging type player.

How we completed our playing list for ’06 . . .
1:37:32 PM Wed 14 December, 2005
Richmond’s Director of Football Greg Miller
richmondfc.com.au
Our plan in the lead-up to this week’s AFL pre-season and rookie drafts was to have as many young players as we could training at the Club, so we could gain some valuable first-hand knowledge of them.
That’s why, the day after the National Draft in late November, we had a special training session at Punt Road with about 30 candidates who were vying for selection in the pre-season and rookie drafts.
We then narrowed that list down to nine or 10 players, and they trained with us up until draft day this week.
It became quite evident to us over the past couple of weeks that Matthew White, from the Calder Cannons TAC Cup team, was the standout candidate of the group training with us due to his aerobic capacity, his speed, his strength, his whole manner around the Club . . .
We felt he had the necessary qualities to make the grade at the game’s highest level, but we also were aware that Collingwood was most interested in him.
So, to ensure that he came to Tigerland – and not across the road to the Magpies – we took the unusual step of choosing him in the pre-season draft, rather than waiting until the rookie draft.
If we had left him until our first selection in the rookie draft (pick five overall), he may well have been gone to Collingwood, or another club that had choices before us.
The resultant increased payment to Matthew as a senior list player, on a two-year contract, was not significant and, overall, we believed this was the best tactic available to us to further develop the type of playing list we want.
Matthew missed a bit of footy throughout the ’05 season due to some niggling injuries – but never more than one or two weeks at a time.
We had him checked out by our medial staff and they found his body to be very sound. Certainly, his pre-season trial with us, and a couple of weeks before that with the Coburg Tigers, showed he’s in outstanding physical condition.
With our first rookie-list selection, we felt we needed to develop a young ruckman, so we identified the two best ‘talls’ who didn’t get picked up in the National Draft – Angus Graham and Luke McEntee.
We basically pitted them against each other at training over a couple of weeks, and were most pleased to end up taking Angus as our Rookie Club’s choice.
Angus is a 200cm boy from King Island, who’s had a meteoric rise through the football ranks this year, having played more than 40 games of football for Assumption College, the Calder Cannons (TAC Cup) and Tasmania (the under-18 championships). He is still pretty raw, but we feel there’s quite an upside to him at just 18 years of age.
With our second rookie choice, which came courtesy of a pledge from our “Captains’ Club” coterie group, we were looking at either Daniel Nicholls of the Stingrays, who had trained with us during that two-week period, or ex-West Coast Eagle Jeremy Humm, who joined our sessions only three or four days before the rookie draft.
Nicholls was taken by Collingwood, which meant that we were able to pick the 22-year-old Humm, who’d spent five frustrating seasons at West Coast, after moving over there from North Ballarat as a 17-year-old.
The third rookie player we took last Tuesday was Cameron Howat, who deserves every opportunity to make it at the elite level.
Cameron started pre-season training with us back in late October and hasn’t missed a beat since.
He also has excellent aerobic capacity, and has shown us in all the various training drills that he’s got fine football nous to go with his physical attributes. Following a couple of good seasons of VFL football with the Box Hill Hawks (playing under new Coburg Tigers coach Andy Collins), he now gets his chance at an AFL club.
I’m sure members of the Tiger Tribe will join me in welcoming these young men to Punt Road and, hopefully, they’ll go on to enjoy long, successful careers at the Club.

There we go. Two years it is.
which meant that we were able to pick the 22-year-old Humm, who’d spent five frustrating seasons at West Coast, after moving over there from North Ballarat as a 17-year-old.
I know Humm's only a rookie but I thought we learnt our lesson with Shane Morrison with regards to picking up someone from another AFL club due to "lack of opportunity" :-\.
-
MT - Their also pulling the "injury" angle in regards to Humm!
Not happy we took him, but who knows how he'll turn out!
-
Happy with White & Graham.
Fair go with Humm lads. Sposed to be a little ball of courage. Might not have alot else to his game but thats a good start. Being a rookie pick there is not alot of loss if he doesnt make it. Best situation you can hope for he comes good and holds down the back pocket role for the next decade.
Howat seems to have some upside also. Bit early to write him off.
-
Howat isn't been written off, its just that it seems Collins is the sole reason he has been drafted, and we all know how well drafting mates of the coaching panel works out, don't we Wayne Brittain! :banghead
-

To be honest I'd never heard of Howat. Im sure he was playing some decent footy and not soly picked up due to Collins loving him - well, you hope so at least.
-
I've heard from a few Box Hill followers that Howat is a Collins love-child!
Also they said while he ran run, he can't kick for poo!

Richmond Football Director, Greg Miller, spoke to the Sport 927 breakfast team yesterday about the pre-season draft when the Tigers picked up Matthew White from the Calder Cannons and former Eagle, Jeremy Humm.
