Match preview: Port Adelaide v Richmond
AFL.com.au
28 June 2016
SUMMARY
With both teams among a group of five with six wins, victory is crucial to keeping their slim chances of reaching the finals alive. The Power have lost their past two, but are well rested with a 13-day break after their disappointing 17-point defeat to Fremantle. Ken Hinkley's men could be boosted with the addition of key forward Jay Schulz (back) and defender Jack Hombsch (hamstring). They take on a Tigers side that has won its past two, albeit against both Queensland teams who are near the bottom of the ladder. The Power are much stronger than when they beat Richmond by 35 points in round six, with their two All Australians, Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard, back in the side. The Tigers were missing key defender Alex Rance through suspension on that occasion, but will need a strong performance on the road to keep in touch with the top eight.
WHERE AND WHEN: Adelaide Oval, Friday, July 1, 7.20pm ACST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R6, 2016: Port Adelaide 13.16 (94) d Richmond 8.11 (59) at the MCG
R8, 2015: Richmond 11.10 (76) d Port Adelaide 5.13 (43) at Adelaide Oval
1EF, 2014: Port Adelaide 20.12 (132) d Richmond 11.9 (75) at Adelaide Oval
R17, 2014: Richmond 19.12 (126) d Port Adelaide 16.10 (106) at Etihad Stadium
R7, 2013: Richmond 18.6 (114) d Port Adelaide 10.13 (73) at AAMI Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Port Adelaide's 35-point win over Richmond in round six shows that statistics don't always tell the whole story. Bachar Houli (34 possessions), Shaun Grigg (32) and Dustin Martin (31) found plenty of the pill and the Tigers dominated the hit-out count (64 to 24), but the Power led at every change.
2. Hard work at the contest has been Port Adelaide's trademark this season. The Power are ranked second in tackles in the competition with 78.8 per game, while the Tigers are last in that category, with a dismal 62 per game.
3. History favours the Power, but the Tigers can take heart from their recent record against Port Adelaide. The Tigers have won four of their past seven games since 2012, including a draw. But the Power still have the edge overall 16-10 since the club's entry into the competition.
4. Richmond's forwards are getting plenty of great service from their midfield, taking the second-most marks inside attacking 50 this season with 14.5 per game. The same can't be said of the Power, with just 10.2 to rank third-last.
5. This is the first serious challenge for the Tigers in a number of weeks. While on the surface they are in great form having won five of their past six games, their past four have been against the bottom-four sides.
6. He's firming in the Brownlow Medal markets every week with a slew of best on ground performances, but that hasn't translated in Richmond star Dustin Martin climbing up the Schick AFL Player Ratings. Martin is 39th overall (468 points), but only fourth at the Tigers behind Brett Deledio (28th, 478.8), Shane Edwards (32nd, 475) and Alex Rance (34th, 473.9).
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Robbie Gray.
Port Adelaide's dual All Australian was held to just 18 touches by Michael Barlow, who had a career-high 43 possessions of his own, in Fremantle's 17-point upset of the Power in round 13. Gray needs to exert his influence in the midfield and be strong enough to shake off the tag he's certain to get.
PREDICTION: Port Adelaide by 24 points

'History' against Power fresh in the mind for Tigers
AFL.com.au
28 June 2016
RICHMOND'S trip to Port Adelaide on Friday night will be another chapter in the intense rivalry growing between the two clubs, predicts Tigers midfielder Brandon Ellis.
The Power's domination of Richmond in the 2014 elimination final, when they burst clear in the opening term before eventually finishing 57-point winners, still sticks in the craw of the Tigers' players.
"What they did to us in the final, we didn't really like that," Ellis said at the club on Tuesday.
"We've got a lot of coaches that are at Richmond now that played for Port Adelaide, so there's a lot of history between the two clubs."
Both teams sit at 6-7, although Port's percentage is almost 20 points higher. West Coast is 8-5 in eighth place but recently lost brilliant ruckman Nic Naitanui to surgery on both his Achilles.
Ellis was well aware of what was riding on the match.
"It's a massive game. Going over there, it's always tough to beat them," he said.
"There's a bit of history between us, which is always good, so it's going to be a pretty fierce contest."
Richmond was on the end of a 35-point defeat to the Power in round six earlier this year at the MCG. Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard missed through injury.
However, the Tigers had their own personnel issues, with Alex Rance serving a suspension, while tough midfielder Kane Lambert suffered a punctured lung in the opening term.
Ellis said his teammates were well aware what aspects they needed to rectify to be victorious on Friday.
"We reviewed that game a little bit this morning, found out what we did wrong," he said.
"We went back and we know what we have to do this weekend to get over the line."

Must win game. :snidegrin
-
We're 2nd for marks I50 this year, my question is who is taking them??
Vickery is instructed to drop them, Riewoldt isn't taking 14 a game...??
-
Must be Hamspud clunking them all then....according to WAT & Jackoff at least....
-
Tigers dominated the hit-out count (64 to 24), but the Power led at every change.
But hit-outs are so damn important that's why Hammer is our MVP...isn't it?

If we dominated the hit outs like that surely we won the game

I would say so and when the tribunal hears about his training form leading up to that game they will have no choice but to award us the four points

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a clown and a fool.

What do you guys wanna see this game ?
I wanna see Vlastuin in the guts for 50% + gametime
I wanna see Broad andConca take em on off the back flanks
I wanna see players backing themselves in
a couple big grabs and goals from Griff
I wanna see vickery get 1 disposal for the match and finally get dropped
I wanna see Martin get another BOG
I wanna see 4 quarters of good footy.
Will any of this come true ?
-
Tigers $3.50
:o

I wanna see if by not playing, Hampson has a greater impact on the game than when he does play.

Touch your toes time
-
Touch your toes time
Aye.
We are in BIG trouble peoples......this is gunna get ugly :-[
-
We need a big game from Ivan and our mids tonight. No Hombsch means Port's defence is inexperienced is something we can exploit if we can get enough ball inside F50.
Lose this and it's season over even by optimistic Dimma's standards.
LATE CHANGES
Port Adelaide: Jack Hombsch (quad) replaced in the selected side by Tom Clurey
Richmond: Nil
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Port Adelaide: Jake Neade, Matthew Broadbent, Karl Amon, Nathan Krakouer
Richmond: Anthony Miles, Sam Lloyd, Tyrone Vickery, Nathan Broad

An example of stupid needless handballs that stuff us up.
-
Disposal is appalling ...........
Same old culprits
:banghead
-
Yep some poor decision making
Hope they're consistent with the holding the ball / incorrect disposal decisons this evening
-
Right play by Broad but not hitting the target across the backline in these conditions is a gift to the opposition.
-
Stop booing you idiots. That's why the deliberate rule was brought in.
Not smart Griff.
-
Jack shows his class again with his reading of the flight of the ball. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 19
Port 13
-
Cant believe i going to say this but well done Tyrone, smart play to keep your opponent from the contest

Dumb footy by Hunt who until then had been good
Trouble here, plot has been lost

CH7 just barracking their Port team home now
-
Getting smashed in the centre clearances :help.
-
They are hot on holding the ball tonight
-
:huh
How many times have port players thrown the ball......
We are getting reemed
-
Thinking about calling this now
One more and the floodgates are well and truly open
-
Has Deledio touched the ball
-
Has Deledio touched the ball
Yes twice
-
Port don't have a true ruckman and they are killing us out of the middle.
-
Free kicks 11 to 3 in favour of Port
-
Two touches to Lids.
This game is done, one thing about the Tigers, they let us know early when they're cooked.
-
Cold have rushed it through there and we keep it in :facepalm.
-
Has Deledio touched the ball
Yes twice
how many effective
-
13 to 3 for frees
-
Geez our tackling is laughable. Port player cold and we crash into a teammate :facepalm.
-
14 to 4
-
Finally we actual tackle somebody.
Sorry but this is soft! Physically and mentally.
-
Putrid.......just putrid.....
-
This is unbelievable, I thought we were in control at qtr time, this is going to get ugly, we've lost it. Soft as butter
-
Dont let the tackle fool you Astbury is a very average player and thats being generous
-
Getting flogged in clearances

-
How's all the bloody depth and hardness
-
Conca and hunt BOG
Going well.
-
Game and season over!
-
This is terrible
-
Winning contested ball though.
Dimwit done.
-
Geiffiths performance here is exactly why I want him out with vickery, has been pathetic.
Yeah we're poo but geez port have pulled 4-5 goals or of their rectum tonight
-
Winning contested ball though.
Dimwit done.
What odds on dummer mentioning it post match? :shh
-
Getting flogged in clearances
I wonder why
It's called softness! Can't excuse a lack of attitude, effort and intensity on one player missing.
-
Pay a free just to stop momentum..... Terds....
-
Getting flogged in clearances
I wonder why
It's called softness! Can't excuse a lack of attitude, effort and intensity on one player missing.
Yep
Besides we always get beaten in clearances
-
Nice fly there by b Ellis
-
Outnumbered at every contest = a lack of effort and intensity.
Then add our fumbling compared to Port's clean hands.
-
Maric 0 touches
Lids 4 touches
Edwards 3 touches
Leadership...??
Lambert 1 touch
Half of footy...
-
And stuffen westhoff is plucking them one handed
Oh we'll surely now even our dummy coach will concede finals are gone
Or will he??
-
Geez, we actually scored.
That would've been holding the ball if that was us.
-
Keep persisting with short
-
Short snaps a goal. Comeback on ;D.
27 - 56
-
We are such a slow side. Getting killed on the spread as well.
-
The positive here is that this ridiculous notion that we're still a chance of finals will put to rest :clapping :clapping
-
Get the duck out of here ump, you have got go be pooting me
-
200 more disposals
20 more tackles
PatheticPathetic... Get out Dimwit.. Clean out this mob
-
Id switch to the tennis but Kygrios is playing
Perhaps the Storm game is the way to go
-
Amazing how kicking long in the wet is so effective, Tigers.
Good desperation by Rance. Titch long and TV outmarks and goals.
Rich 33
Port 56
-
Is Lloyd still out there?
He is the cameo king number 2
-
Scragging on Cotch not paid.

Port Adel. 2.2 9.2-56

Is Lloyd still out there?
He is the cameo king number 2
done more than Deledio, Edwards, maric.....
-
That is just poor pathetic crap Conca!!! Ffs simple ball to the top of the square can't even do that wow
And why are taggers allowed to pick fights and not allow a player to even run at the ball? I thought they cleaned that crap up
-
Is Lloyd still out there?
He is the cameo king number 2
done more than Deledio, Edwards, maric.....
That's a massive statement. ..not
-
Farkyn over this
-
Deledio is a sch1ttman
-
At least my ravioli dinner was fabulous :clapping
-
Scragging on Cotch not paid.
Theyve clearly targetting Cotchin and Dusty
Other teams naturally block and shepherd opposition taggers and snipers to help out their stars. We leave our stars to hang out to dry. It only needs a couple of hard blocks on a spud like Mitchell to free up Cotch.
-
Scragging on Cotch not paid.

Any danger our coaching staff can do something similar..
-
Never play conca:bangheada again....this bloke butchers it as much as hunt.....
Actually Conca can win a hard ball, smother, lay tackles and plays for the team mates.......a few of his team mates could start by at least touching the ball :whistle

Yep, we are so soft on so many levels
-
And why are taggers allowed to pick fights and not allow a player to even run at the ball? I thought they cleaned that crap up
This!
Port taggers holding Cotch back by his arms yet no free ::). If the umps tonight did their job and paid a few frees, it would not only that crap out but we might have a chance to win some clearances.
-
Funny they don't show the free kick count on the stats........ :banghead
-

Yep, we are so soft on so m7ant levels
Yep. We shouldn't be surprised that we continually fail when we fail do the basics that you learn in the U10s - tackling, blocking & shepherding.
-
If you ever wondered how soft this team is, tonight is a clear indication of how much.
Dusty getting towelled by Ebert & umps and no one gives a stuff. :banghead
Cotchin getting his pants pulled down again because he struggled to shake a tag everyone knows it but no one in this team has a clue on how to stick up for their captain because they could t give a stuff. :banghead
No support, no toughness, no balls, no spine, no passion, no loyalty, no integrity and no heart.
This bunch of sissys are a mirror of the coaching staff.
I can't stand watching this bunch of panty wearers. Hunt, B.Ellis, Grigg, Conca, Edwards all wear panty liners as well.

Got to love the free to Port to start the qtr ::).
-
Good to see we've come out breathing fire after that poor second qtr ::).
-
Why don't they put Floss in the middle?
Why would you want to do that?
:rollin
-
Where's the spread Richmond? :banghead. Hunt was out across half-back and he had no one to kick to.

Insult to girls. You won't see women footballers being allergic to physical contact like some of our players.
-
We should register ourselves as a charity. We gift goals to the opposition all the time.

3 players in a row were pulled off the ball without possession, no free and they goal, wtf....

Tiger free in the centre corridor near the ump and we go short to D50 and cough it up :banghead
-
Vickery is an absolute liabiltt.
Soft and pushed off the ball.
Cant take a simple uncontested mark - holds his hands two feet apart.
Effing enough!
-
So many players freeze up under preasure instead of thumping the ball into the open.
Nothing changes down at punt road
-
Our smalls don't have a clue. Front and square is a foreign concept to them.
Not their fault, ask Dimma where he wants them, guarding space just in case there is a turnover lmao
-
3/4 time
Richmond 3.2 5.3 7.6-48
Port Adel. 2.2 9.2 11.5-71

Ivan hasn't touched the ball. Obviously trying to follow Hammer's game around the ground tonight ;D.
-
Public transport at peak hour, full of passengers. No one can convince me we are playing to any particular gameplan. When something comes off its pure luck rather than good management. We still insist in passing to stationery targets, whats the point, its wet and slippery, get the ball forward and have the forwards play one on one. Too many free Port defenders inside 50 and they transition much better than us.
Move Vlastuin in the middle and take a risk, we need big bodies and if we dont win the centre clearances then he is wasted in defence because weight of numbers will win over in the end.
Feel we will fall away in the last and get beaten badly, no spark at the moment.
-
BS that's deliberate :lol
-
Who are the umpires?
-
Why handball back into the pack Titch when you were free from the pack :huh3.
-
Who are the umpires?
Dumb & dumber
Plus du,b & dumber 2
-
Ummm Tigers ..... there's this thing at the end of your legs called a foot. That game is called Football not handball. Might be an indication that this 'foot' thing is part of the game.
-
Ivan definitely trying to copy Hammer. Taps the ball to an area where there's no teammates.
-
Why go sideways & gain nothing
-
Ivan definitely trying to copy Hammer. Taps the ball to an area where there's no teammates.
Playing like a bloke who knows he is goneskis and someome who hasnt played at this level for 10 weeks
-
We are always looking to handball :banghead and so put ourselves under pressure when we are forced to kick, instead of just kicking first option.
-
Can anyone Mark the bloody thing.........
-
STOP GOING TO THE POCKETS!!
Nuffers
-
that was 50 to Deledio wtf is wrong with umpires vs Richmond
-
Vickery is an absolute liabiltt.
Soft and pushed off the ball.
Cant take a simple uncontested mark - holds his hands two feet apart.
Effing enough!
If only I had a dollar for every time you've said you've had enough.... :lol
And yet i hover around like a moth to the flame :'(
-
STOP GOING TO THE POCKETS!!
Nuffers
they are coached to play negative footy
-
Idiots
-
9 inside 50's in a row don't even look like scoring
We are broken
-
Last 7 inside 50s and no score. Yep, forward coach is earning his keep.
Ah, we finally score a point on the 8th inside 50. So good this set-up.
49 - 71

Game set match
Well done tigers
Another desperately disappointingly season
At least it is now offically over
-
By the way, love how we dominate for long periods but hardly score and then cough up an easy goal to the opposition against the run of play. Dumb, dumb, dumb .....
-
Grimesy, you've cost us 3 goals tonight doing stupid things.
He tried to mark it is wasn't that easy ...
Would be down by 100 points without rance grimes

Would be down by 100 points without rance grimes
Went to ground and then lost his feet trying to get up and then knocked the ball into the goalsquare :P
-
Classic example
Of how bad our structure are
On the wing Lloyd and reiwdt with their respective opponents and Lloyd is the one that flies for he mark and Jack stays down
Does anyone review this garbage post game? Has been happening all year
-
"Oh look, port are a good side but more importantly we feel we structured up well on the night. And thats important to us"
-
Grimesy, you've cost us 3 goals tonight doing stupid things.
He tried to mark it is wasn't that easy ...

If that was grigg you'd be singing another tune
-
Dont get it, in the centre square so we go sideways and then kick 40 metres into the pocket. Really, wouldnt the more dangerous kick be the top of the square, again we seem to play to some weird method that defies common sense.
And do our players know what an EFFECTIVE tackle is, Port do.
-
Does anyone review this garbage post game? Has been happening all year
KPIs were alright so all is okay.

3 on 1 and we fluffed it.....

Problems start up the ground
-
Terrible by Broad
Not just the pich instead of marking but he ducked his head in the contest
-
Our tackling is atrocious
-
The umpire always picks out Tigers holding yet they been holding us all night. l want to see Cotchin smash #2 before games end
-
My god Conca, can't even hit a target with a handball
-
Broad has been shown up - hes seems to be a long way off the pace
Our tackling is atrocious
Cant be atrocious Julz when we dont do it

We have no faith in our forwards aside from Jack. Also our smalls are useless and slow. Unless we take a mark, the opposition run it out easily. That's why we go to the pocket. It's a negative defensive tactic to try and cover our many deficiencies.
-
I'd persevere with broad

Why dont the club have answers and address the problems?
Its the same poo year after year

yes that's exactly what I mean

Again kicking to the pockets, can someone call out his imposter publicly and ask why why WHY?? Let's hear his Mensa response.
Bring back Wallace, his guy is the biggest spud cosch I've ever seen
-
Geez Jack is good. Unlucky, it was touched on the line as it was going through.
Feel so sorry for him that he is playing alongside so many duds.
50 - 79
-
100 - 60 tackles
-
Their scragging stats versus ours are through the roof, we need to work on that imo.
-
Ivan or Hammer ?
-
I'd persevere with broad
Yeah probably

A long way
Agree with both of you.
It hasn't help a second gamer either coming off playing such a poor Brisbane forward line first up followed by us being smashed in the middle tonight and our defence being continually under seige.
-
:gotigersAnother ineffective tackle and goal, we are so poor with our tackling technique when we actually decide to tackle that is.

C moore should be played

100 - 60 tackles
I'm a Richmond footballer - What's a tackle?

Over it
Another soft, gutless effort by so many of oir players
2nd half our captain has gone miising again. Got inside his head at half time and that was that

Yep agree he has a long way to go, but done a couple
Of nice touch things in a row now, I like seeing someone fight back shows hey have character
-
Ivan or Hammer ?
Honestly
Neither
-
Cotchin should be disgusted with himself letting that scragging hack score on him like that
-
Broad has done more than Edwards, Cotchin & many others tells a story at Richmond. If RFC refuse to drop players who don't perform its high time for supporters to drop a worthless club who settles for rubbish year after year :banghead

Retire Maric........
-
Jack, you're one of the few Tigers who can hold his head up high. Rance is another. Aside from maybe one or two others, the rest have been shameful.
-
Watching Maric laughing with the opposition just after the siren was pathetic

this is the only team that Freo have beaten LOL

Ivan or Hammer ?
I'd elevate Chol and play him in the ruck when he's over his ankle injury.

Yep. All over for the big fella. His body is old and shot and he can't play the way he use to 2-4 years ago.

I don't think that that's correct.

Martin played his guts out but our other mids are too small in the body.

Only positive for me is the end to the delusional thoughts of finals and we can start dropping some players who simply need to be dropped and give some others an opportunity, no reason not to.

Chol is playing in defence in the VFL :huh3 and looks totally lost as a footballer right now.

22 more disposals but less kicks, 16 less inside 50s and of course just 8 goals and 6 fewer than Port.
18 fewer contested possessions 158 - 176 ..... Dimma will blame the loss on this stat
27 more hitouts ( 52 - 25 ) but ...
19 fewer clearances ( 33 - 52 ) and 6 less centre clearances which equaled each teams goal tally ( 8 - 14 )
13 fewer stoppage win ... 25 - 38
and our favourite stat that Dimma ignores:
43 fewer tackles ..... 63 - 106
13 Port players had 4 or more tackles; Richmond only had 5 ...... Griffiths had 8 tackles :o (but did sweet stuff all else including not one mark)

It says a lot of the team when Griffiths is the teams top tackler..... :facepalm
-
l reckon we went in too tall in those conditions. We lacked run but overall our foot skills & hot handballs to players under pressure. Turnovers we are our own worst nightmare. We are weak in body & Cotchin is scrawny for a player who has been at the club for so many years. Edwards another. We are too small & weak in the midfield which is game over
-
No doubt in my mind we are clearly the worst tackling team in the competition but it doesn't seem to rank as an important stat as far as the coaches are concerned. Even when we do tackle we consistently tackle incorrectly and allow the opposition to offload the ball where in similar situations where we are tackled we are dispossessed or a free is paid against us. Thousands of supporters can see the problem but a handful of coaches can't, tells me we have a problem Houston.

something with our fwd structures and the way we go inside 50, blind freddy can see that going in via the pockets will never net you a big score, thousands see it, yet a handful of coaches refuse to see differently
-
Lennon & McBean in next week for Vickery & Griffiths. Surely.
-
Vickery must be traded
-
Worst coached side in the AFL by a long way.
I'm glad we lost. And I hope we keep losing.
This club needs an almighty reality check.
These guys from tonight are taking us nowhere.
BEllis, Griffiths, Vickery, Hunt, Grigg, Astbury, Conca and Maric.
And there is 4 first round draft picks in that lot.

Hardwicks going to top list of most games coached with out a finals win for at least the next 100 years.

BEllis, Griffiths, Vickery, Hunt, Grigg, Astbury, Conca and Maric.

BEllis, Vickery, Conca
Number 4?
-
Vlastuin should've been moved to the guts after after Port's third goal in the second at the latest.
Three tall set-up is for when you have three gun KPF's, anything less than that, it's risky and when you only have one gun and two duds, as we do, it just courts disaster.

correct, look at the doggies, they'll go short and leave number 1 pick boyd in the reserves rather than play a KPF that isnt up to scratch, yet we still persist with 2 spuds week in week out

Just checked
Griffiths a 2nd round pick

13 disposals between Maric, Vickery, Griffiths tells a story the selectors had it wrong. Then Lambert & Cotchin a total of 24 :banghead

The extent of Tigers’ capitulation in the second term was best shown in the fact it took them more than 18 minutes to go inside forward 50. It was the longest period a team has taken to go into attack in a quarter this season, according to Champion Data. The Tigers were obliterated out of the middle and then found themselves hopelessly pinned in their back half and unable to get hold of the ball. Sixteen Richmond players had three disposals or less for the quarter in a display which will bring more heat on coach Damien Hardwick and his playing list. The loss all but condemns the Tigers to watching on this September, a bitterly disappointing outcome for a club touted as a top four contender pre-season.
Richmond’s willingness to engage in scuffles and melees was greater than its stomach for the real contest, for much of this game. Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin received close attention from Kane Mitchell and Brad Ebert respectively, leading to numerous scuffles. There was also a brief melee at the quarter-time break. But the Tigers’ willingness to fly the flag didn’t result in goals. It was the fifth loss from five Friday night starts for Richmond this year. The aggregate margin of those five losses is more than 200 points.

On the final 4 lines. Not that I've ever complained as debating a different view should be a key part of any forum but I'd argue that your view has been consistent for a couple of years.
We finished 5th last year and it was a good year without being great.
I'd argue on balance that any poster who disagreed with you until this year could do so with credibility and in fact win that debate in the eyes of others if not yours.
Waiting until we fail doesn't make you right in hindsight.
There is no lesson to be learned here.
It's just grandstanding to say otherwise.
Having posted the above, I'd acknowledge you've made a number of valid views this year which I've agreed with - partly because of club performance, partly because of the way they've been constructed.
-
dooks has been spot on and those who disagreed just loved to accept mediocrity like dimwit.
You think finishing 5th was a good year? Most knew what result would come the following week
His whole tenure has been a massive failure. I would put him as one of the worst coaches we have had.
-
Hopefully this loss will finally wake the club up. Action should be taken now. Sack the football recruiting department. Search and obtain competent recruiting staff. Scrap the game plan. Start playing youth. Play Butler, McBean see if they are up to it. Make long term decisions on the playing futures of Chaplin, Grigg, Houli, Vickery.

Wow ... With respect I disagree completely.
"We couldn't take eight years to rebuild. We needed to become competitive a bit quicker than that. But at that time all the best talent basically for the next four to five years was going to be going north (to Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney)," Richardson said.
"We're seeing the likes of GWS reap the rewards of that now. Our strategy wasn't just to go to the draft like a lot of clubs did because we knew that would probably take six to eight years and we've seen that with the likes of Melbourne.
"We didn't think Richmond fans would accept an eight-year rebuild. We turned it around in four, which I think was a terrific achievement.
"We're paying a price in the sense that we knew that that mature-age talent would get us to a point but not take us to the next level, which was always going to be the hardest part.
"While it's been disappointing somewhat to not win a final, it's been a good achievement to play finals for three years in a row for the first time for 20 years for the club."
