Match preview: Richmond v Essendon

AFL.com.au
12 July 2016

SUMMARY

For two losing teams, Richmond and Essendon managed to instill a lot of excitement among their supporters in round 16. The Tigers finally pulled the trigger and played their kids, with Oleg Markov and Jason Castagna repaying the faith in spades. The Bombers, meanwhile, stumbled on the right attacking formula against St Kilda and kicked their highest score of the season. Don't worry about the 10 and 11-point losses respectively – or the fact finals are out of the equation for both – hope was generated and both teams should enter this clash expecting a genuine contest in their first Saturday afternoon meeting at the MCG since 2008.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, July 16, 1.40pm AEST

LAST FIVE TIMES
R10, 2016, Richmond 16.9 (105) d Essendon 10.7 (67) at the MCG
R22, 2015, Richmond 10.14 (74) d Essendon 7.5 (47) at the MCG
R9, 2015, Richmond 10.12 (72) d Essendon 8.11 (59) at the MCG
R20, 2014, Richmond 14.11 (95) d Essendon 11.11 (77) at the MCG
R11, 2014, Essendon 15.14 (104) d Richmond 7.12 (54) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. Dustin Martin was again the star for the Tigers in their win over the Bombers in round 10, racking up 38 disposals, six inside 50s and seven clearances. Brett Deledio and Ty Vickery kicked three goals each.

2. Essendon remains last in the competition for scoring this season with an average of only 62 points a game, but twice in the last three weeks they’ve kicked 90 points or more, booting their highest score of the season, 14.14 (98), against St Kilda last Sunday.

3. Richmond is ranked third for marks inside 50 this season, averaging 13.9 a game. Essendon is last with just 9.4 a game.

4. One possible advantage for the Bombers might be their disposal efficiency. They’re currently ranked equal No.2 in the AFL at 74.5 per cent, ahead of Richmond (ranked No.7 at 74 per cent).

5. Nothing separates these sides at the MCG. In 65 contests, they have 32 wins each and there has been one draw.

6. Exciting Bomber Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti is one strong game away from moving into the top 22 Essendon players in the Official AFL Player Ratings. He was gone from No.501 in the AFL overall in round seven to No.416 after last week's excellent performance against St Kilda.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Joe Daniher.

The young Essendon forward is the most experienced player in the Dons' attacking six and carries a lot of responsibility after just 63 games. Last week against St Kilda his inaccuracy in front of goal (2.3) cost his team what would have been just its second win this season. It would be great to see the 22-year-old bounce back.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 20 points

Pretty good effort by a team without their best 10 senior players.

Let's be generous to our tigers and take our best 5 players out.
Rance, Reiwoldt, Martin, Cotchin, Deledio.

How do you think we'd go?  :rollin

Why do we stand off our men 10 metres when teams kick the ball in. What sort of game plan is that l don't understand it & l have coached football & all l ever told my players is to man up & keep the ball in our forward line. You will never be a top 4 side playing poo football like that

That passage of play sums up bellis. Takes an easy uncontested Mark, in slow motion give off a handball forgets to shepherd and puts his teammate who just received under enormous pressure. No vision and no urgency to protect the ball carrier

I left 20min into the last quarter and got an early train.

Boring game, terrible playing style. We deserve to get mauled by middling clubs playing that hot potato bs across half back before inching forwards 5m at a time in a zig zag.

Griffiths solid. Hampson solid. Martin lethal. Some kids showed a bit.

I didn't see it. What happened to McBean? No scores 12 posses.  Not a great game by those stats.

The last 7 or so minutes was a disgrace, chip chip chip, you would think we were playing for time in the grand final. We are woeful keeping possession anyway so why put ourselves under pressure and then make the eventual turnover which leads to a goal. You can see players just instinctively going sideways and backwards without even looking for attacking options. Cannot understand this strategy at this time of the year when finals are a distant memory and especially against a side with one win for the season. I really wish Hardwick would just say to the side just go out and enjoy yourself, play on at every opportunity, keep attacking and go direct through the centre corridor when you can.

One final rant, I don't know who coaches our side in terms of how players link with each other in transition but quite frankly we must be one of the worst sides in this area of the game. Continually we end up with a player being poleaxed after receiving a hospital kick or handball. To me we run too much down tram tracks rather than diagonally which makes our players easy targets to shutdown.

Dissapointing but not on a Vickery level. But a backwards step from last week.

Lachy Neale from the dockers was on the radio pregame and they were talking about the dockers season. He said, first preseason game against richmond we won pretty easily and moved the ball well, but 2nd game we played adelaide and they took us apart quite easily with a lot of regulars out, thats when we as a group realised we were a fair way off the pace. Took them 2 preseason games to get that, took us about 12 rounds? Delusion

One of the best plays of the day was Markov sprinting into the F50 & demanding the ball & going on to kick a lovely running goal.
That was one of the days plays & what more players need to do is a bit of guts busting running.

Why do we stand off our men 10 metres when teams kick the ball in. What sort of game plan is that l don't understand it & l have coached football & all l ever told my players is to man up & keep the ball in our forward line. You will never be a top 4 side playing poo football like that

Do you win many games?

I feel really flat . Thought we were lucky to win .

There is something horribly wrong with the way we play the game.

419 disposals to 325 in our favour... ... Yet they had more inside 50s ( 53-46) and had 6 more scoring shots.
Even to a nuffer like myself - Thats way too much junk meaningless possessions.

Did I mention this was Essendon who were on a 13 game losing streak.

We only won because we had Dusty , Cotch and Rance.

Did Riewoldt even play yesterday ?

Furthermore this Drugs scandal is going to work in Essendons favour.

Having an entire year to develop and fast track the "second tier" is going to be valuable.

Interesting to see how they go next year .

Sorry Tony but that doesn't make sense.

Dockers beat Adelaide in that match . They also beat Geelong the following week . Dockers won all 3 NAB challenge games.

Me thinks Lachy Neale is rewriting history.

Not at all. He was talking about the way their structures were being broken down and taken apart by an apposition missing a fair few regulars. He specifically said the crows could and probably should have won that one quite easily and that was when they realised as a group they were not where they thought they were
