Match preview: Richmond v Essendon
AFL.com.au
12 July 2016
SUMMARY
For two losing teams, Richmond and Essendon managed to instill a lot of excitement among their supporters in round 16. The Tigers finally pulled the trigger and played their kids, with Oleg Markov and Jason Castagna repaying the faith in spades. The Bombers, meanwhile, stumbled on the right attacking formula against St Kilda and kicked their highest score of the season. Don't worry about the 10 and 11-point losses respectively – or the fact finals are out of the equation for both – hope was generated and both teams should enter this clash expecting a genuine contest in their first Saturday afternoon meeting at the MCG since 2008.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, July 16, 1.40pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R10, 2016, Richmond 16.9 (105) d Essendon 10.7 (67) at the MCG
R22, 2015, Richmond 10.14 (74) d Essendon 7.5 (47) at the MCG
R9, 2015, Richmond 10.12 (72) d Essendon 8.11 (59) at the MCG
R20, 2014, Richmond 14.11 (95) d Essendon 11.11 (77) at the MCG
R11, 2014, Essendon 15.14 (104) d Richmond 7.12 (54) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Dustin Martin was again the star for the Tigers in their win over the Bombers in round 10, racking up 38 disposals, six inside 50s and seven clearances. Brett Deledio and Ty Vickery kicked three goals each.
2. Essendon remains last in the competition for scoring this season with an average of only 62 points a game, but twice in the last three weeks they’ve kicked 90 points or more, booting their highest score of the season, 14.14 (98), against St Kilda last Sunday.
3. Richmond is ranked third for marks inside 50 this season, averaging 13.9 a game. Essendon is last with just 9.4 a game.
4. One possible advantage for the Bombers might be their disposal efficiency. They’re currently ranked equal No.2 in the AFL at 74.5 per cent, ahead of Richmond (ranked No.7 at 74 per cent).
5. Nothing separates these sides at the MCG. In 65 contests, they have 32 wins each and there has been one draw.
6. Exciting Bomber Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti is one strong game away from moving into the top 22 Essendon players in the Official AFL Player Ratings. He was gone from No.501 in the AFL overall in round seven to No.416 after last week's excellent performance against St Kilda.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Joe Daniher.
The young Essendon forward is the most experienced player in the Dons' attacking six and carries a lot of responsibility after just 63 games. Last week against St Kilda his inaccuracy in front of goal (2.3) cost his team what would have been just its second win this season. It would be great to see the 22-year-old bounce back.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 20 points

16 point game
-
Bombers first two goals... :snidegrin
-
Pathetic Tanking we are under no pressure giving them the ball openly to have free shots on goal
#$%^%$%^%^ Pathetic
-
Dumb play already
-
Make that 3 goals.... :help
-
As soon as l seen Griffiths take that mark on the wing & we had free players in the forward 50 & he ignored them & looked backwards l knew today was going to be another pathetic rollover :banghead
-
Can our forwards get in position?
-
4 kicks they have made 50 metres & turn it over
-
Not going to get goals kicking it backwards but will have goals kicked against us
-
Can our forwards get in position?
Have a look at the crap delivery into the 50, doesnt matter where the forwards are when it coming in like that.
-
maybe Hampson will kick 4 goals today :snidegrin
-
Hampson.... :bow :bow :bow
-
Edwards.. :banghead
-
Edwards as 10 year player getting thrown around like a rag dolly sums up a average player who simply has not been pushed over them 10 years
-
It's a circus.
-
Poor Dusty his out of puff & needs a rest yet his team mates are doing nothing to help
-
Rabble.
-
frustrating to watch :banghead :banghead
-
Lloyd is a freak :gobdrop
-
Yep, top goal that.. :thumbsup
-
Menadue having a shot make a career
-
:gotigers
now tell me how Grigg missed his shot earlier but a young player does the hard work & tops it off nicely
-
Very sloppy qtr, lucky to be level....but we are.. :-\
-
Dusty has covered so much ground in that opening term & yet so many others are unsighted
-
Bellis is a solid passenger
-
Markov.... :clapping
-
Brake the lines with that sprint into the F50 & kicked a running goal. :clapping :clapping :clapping
That is the type of football l wanna see :gotigers
-
kick it too the 200cm Forward & they take marks & kick goals how brilliant if they did that 2 times in a game
-
Can't say the umpires are against us this week.. :lol
-
Hunt playing very well on the ball today.
-
Don't know about that Cotchin clearly didn't get a free there.
-
We win it out of the centre & try hitting up our small forward yet pick out the opponent. These pricks are seriously dumb footballers
-
McBean off to Miles goal :gotigers
-
Bellis is a solid passenger
annoys me
-
Riewoldt has done absolutely nothing in half a game
-
Jack - be selfish. Ever time you try the "team" thing it results in no goal
-
Ellis comes across as unfit & lazy
-
Ellis comes across as unfit & lazy
Yes agree his far from fit. unless some in the camp have the flu its a very disappointing display.
-
They run themselves into the ground by playing a short chip chip over use of the ball game.
They are a danger to themselves. Hampson is playing well today marking around the ground. He is moving well
-
If you are recording this game on your foxtel IQ.....delete when you get home . Dont waste 2 hours of your life . Watch a movie instead.
-
We are struggling. Essendon want to win bad

-
Pretty good effort by a team without their best 10 senior players.
Let's be generous to our tigers and take our best 5 players out.
Rance, Reiwoldt, Martin, Cotchin, Deledio.
How do you think we'd go? :rollin

Straight to the sewer

Martin needs to get 3 votes this game
-
Martin needs to get 3 votes this game
Yep, Dangerfield would have got them last night, a couple of goals should do it.
-
Why do we stand off our men 10 metres when teams kick the ball in. What sort of game plan is that l don't understand it & l have coached football & all l ever told my players is to man up & keep the ball in our forward line. You will never be a top 4 side playing poo football like that
-
Hate to say this but Astbury is doing ok
-
That passage of play sums up bellis. Takes an easy uncontested Mark, in slow motion give off a handball forgets to shepherd and puts his teammate who just received under enormous pressure. No vision and no urgency to protect the ball carrier
-
Our forwards can't even kick set shots for goals in good conditions yet players like Menadue do
-
Hate to say this but Astbury is doing ok
Playing for a new contract which if he marks the ball again will get a 3 year extention :snidegrin
-

Bellis l would be happy to say l want gone. He don't play for the jumper
-
Deledio gone, calf.
-
l would say Deledio is done for the year with that calf. His career is in the balance
-
Damn Lids injured
McBean hasn't done much
-
Theres one to Dusty.. ;D
-
Yay Dusty :bow
-
Good play by Rioli
-
1 more notch for the Brownlow ;D
-
Gee Edwards looks out of sorts, has done for a few weeks now.
-
:gotigers
Richmond 9-5-59 Essendon 6-8-44 Q3 10:21
-
Sloppy defence
-
Richmond will not man up. Are they that worried about the one v one contest. It cost us goals all the time
-
Benny Gale please for my sanity get rid of Bellis for ever
-
Ellis needs to be dragged :banghead
-
Like last week Richmond all the sudden don't know how to play football again & will self destruct this last quarter :snidegrin
-
FLIPPING HECK!!! >:( >:( >:( :help :banghead
-
keeping them in it with our sloppy play.
-
We are in serious danger of losing this match.
-
back to our pathetic game :banghead
-
We are in serious danger of losing this match.
Was going to post the exact same thing.
At the ground. Essendon have a real sniff of this
-
Next year l'm taking a whole year away from the game. l hope my sanity comes back :snidegrin
-
:lol What would Woosha be saying to his players at 3/4 time?
"Ok boys we've got this one. Let's ramp up the intensity and smash them in the contest. Everyone knows that can't handle tough footy so let's hit me hard and see them crumble. Hard tough footy is how you beat this mob, so let's smash them hard & with our run & carry we'll run right over the top of them." :shh :rollin :shh
-
l hope Dusty gets 15 disposals this last quarter. Dusty will be our hero at the end of this game
-
Why has Dimma got Bellis in the centre. He is a stuffing joke of a coach serious the only place he should be is on the pine while a young player does the job
-
Dusty to Griffith big mark & goal. Textbook football :snidegrin
:gotigers
-
McBean looks slow
-
They all look slow, where is Edwards??
-
Cotchin Martin only players standing up
-
They are all over us. Be very lucky to win this.
-
That was a joke of a umpire decision
-
If you are recording this game on your foxtel IQ.....delete when you get home . Dont waste 2 hours of your life . Watch a movie instead.
I'm having trouble watching it first time around.
I hope this is a nail in Hardwick's coffin. :pray
-
That was a joke of a umpire decision
It was there.
-
Pathetic Richmond
-
fair dinkum football is soft.
-
:gotigers
Rioli Goal
-
I reckon Dimma has been in the ear of the young blokes this week telling them last week was unacceptable. Back to the soft slow sideways possession footy. :clapping
-
dea being penalized for leaving the Tigers :snidegrin thanks goofy umpire goal
-
The decision was correct.
-
Can jack kick a goal in front
-
The answer is NO that is pathetic from a player who is paid to put games away
-
Average team performance today. Too many players went missing...hiding. :-\
-
OMG the umpire is interviewed.
They ask him ? What games do you blow the whistle most.
He answer only when l umpire Richmond games :snidegrin
-
This will nail Dusty the Brownlow medal. ;D
-
Dustin Martin......3 votes... ;D
-
That was a sensational goal by Dusty Martin you beauty :snidegrin
:gotigers
Dusty easy Best on Ground all umpire votes
-
Nice to see we kicked 100 points in a very average display
-
Griffiths play better with Miss Vickery out of the team
-
Well done Tigers. Pathetic performance today but a ugly win is better than a ugly loss
:gotigers
-
Bellis hugging & joking around with Daniher. l hope he is saying l see you next year when they clean swap me for Hurley :snidegrin
-
I left 20min into the last quarter and got an early train.
Boring game, terrible playing style. We deserve to get mauled by middling clubs playing that hot potato bs across half back before inching forwards 5m at a time in a zig zag.
Griffiths solid. Hampson solid. Martin lethal. Some kids showed a bit.
-
Dusty breaks the VFL / AFL kicking record of Kevin Bartlett getting 35 kicks :clapping :clapping :clapping
:gotigers
-
I didn't see it. What happened to McBean? No scores 12 posses. Not a great game by those stats.
-
The last 7 or so minutes was a disgrace, chip chip chip, you would think we were playing for time in the grand final. We are woeful keeping possession anyway so why put ourselves under pressure and then make the eventual turnover which leads to a goal. You can see players just instinctively going sideways and backwards without even looking for attacking options. Cannot understand this strategy at this time of the year when finals are a distant memory and especially against a side with one win for the season. I really wish Hardwick would just say to the side just go out and enjoy yourself, play on at every opportunity, keep attacking and go direct through the centre corridor when you can.
One final rant, I don't know who coaches our side in terms of how players link with each other in transition but quite frankly we must be one of the worst sides in this area of the game. Continually we end up with a player being poleaxed after receiving a hospital kick or handball. To me we run too much down tram tracks rather than diagonally which makes our players easy targets to shutdown.
-
Well done Tigers. Pathetic performance today but a ugly win is better than a ugly loss
:gotigers
Correct 👍
-

Was at the ground.
Dissapointing but not on a Vickery level. But a backwards step from last week.
-
Lachy Neale from the dockers was on the radio pregame and they were talking about the dockers season. He said, first preseason game against richmond we won pretty easily and moved the ball well, but 2nd game we played adelaide and they took us apart quite easily with a lot of regulars out, thats when we as a group realised we were a fair way off the pace. Took them 2 preseason games to get that, took us about 12 rounds? Delusion
-
Dusty breaks the VFL / AFL kicking record of Kevin Bartlett getting 35 kicks :clapping :clapping :clapping
:gotigers
Has that little turd apologized to Dusty yet?
-
One of the best plays of the day was Markov sprinting into the F50 & demanding the ball & going on to kick a lovely running goal.
That was one of the days plays & what more players need to do is a bit of guts busting running.
-
Goals of the day
Markov. Dusty Martin, & the winner is Lloyd with his dribble kick :snidegrin Stick that up ya clacker Dunstall :santa
-

Another snorefest but I enjoyed the day .... Dusty my man :thumbsup
-
I feel really flat . Thought we were lucky to win .
There is something horribly wrong with the way we play the game.
419 disposals to 325 in our favour... ... Yet they had more inside 50s ( 53-46) and had 6 more scoring shots.
Even to a nuffer like myself - Thats way too much junk meaningless possessions.
Did I mention this was Essendon who were on a 13 game losing streak.
We only won because we had Dusty , Cotch and Rance.
Did Riewoldt even play yesterday ?
-
Furthermore this Drugs scandal is going to work in Essendons favour.
Having an entire year to develop and fast track the "second tier" is going to be valuable.
Interesting to see how they go next year .
-
They will smash it next year!! They would have smashed us yesterday with a full side in.
-

Sorry Tony but that doesn't make sense.
Dockers beat Adelaide in that match . They also beat Geelong the following week . Dockers won all 3 NAB challenge games.
Me thinks Lachy Neale is rewriting history.

Not at all. He was talking about the way their structures were being broken down and taken apart by an apposition missing a fair few regulars. He specifically said the crows could and probably should have won that one quite easily and that was when they realised as a group they were not where they thought they were
