Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said the fact Hardwick was given two more years on his contract in March this year “says enough” about how the Tigers rate the 43-year-old’s coaching ability.
“We think Damien Hardwick’s a strong coach for the footy club and we think he’ll be a strong coach into the future,” Gale told SEN radio.
“I believe he has all the attributes required to be a premiership coach.”
Gale said it had been a tough year for the Tigers and their fans.
“That’s what happens when you are short of expectations,” he said.
“We would have expected to be better, based on last year.
“In the first phase of the season we started to play a lot of young guys all at once and probably lacked coherency at times.
“We had to. We had lost three finals in a row and if we kept doing the same thing we’d get the same result.
“We’ve got some good youth. We look forward to seeing them over the next couple of months.”
Gale defended Hardwick’s decision to talk about going backwards before taking steps forwards.
“We were confident we had some elite young players and we had to get them into the team,” Gale said.
“We played a lot of young guys together at the one time and a lot of them in the back half too and that’s why we looked incoherent at times.”

Anyone who listened to and thinks fail and his mate Peggy sue will send dimwit packing are in for a rude shock.
He won't be going anywhere for at least 1 year and possibly longer
Like many have said before to sack the dud would be an admission that they have failed. They will make the assistant coaches the scapegoat instead
-
So what are these premierhip coach attributes he possesses?
-
Nobody know as its " inside these four walls " lol
-
Gotta wonder about the style of slow stoppage based play given how ineffective it's been with the new out of bounds interpretation.
-
How does he figure this :huh

Gotta wonder about the style of slow stoppage based play given how ineffective it's been with the new out of bounds interpretation.
even Ross Lyon sees this - did anyone watch freo v geelong on friday night? Ross has wiped the slate clean and started again, its taken about 15-16 weeks but the dokers are starting to play fast footy, everyone is evolving except our dumb dinosaur
-
They make out they went the "kids approach" early season. What a load of poo!
Every club plays a couple of first and second year players most week. Look at Hawthorn and Sydney. Up until 2 weeks ago we weren't doing anything any other club wasnt doing. Now finals are out of the question, we play a few more kids. And yet the first chance to bring in Grigg we do. If you are looking to the future why do you bring in Grigg??
I hate to say it as I like BG but he is delusional too.
Hardwick is the worst coach in the comp and most can see it except the idiots that run the club.

I want one big super- thread. The themes are all the same.

Here’s an edited transcript of what Gale had to say . . .
Tough time at Tigerland
“It’s been a tough year, and that’s what happens when you’re short on expectations . . . We would have expected to be better, based on last year, and we’re not. So that’s tough, but that’s okay, that’s footy. We’ll work our way through that and we’ll be better for it . . .”
Investing in youth
“We’ve introduced young players over the course of the year . . . Early, in the first phase of the season, we started to play a lot of young guys all at once, and probably lacked coherency at times. But we had to, because we’d lost three finals in-a-row and, if we kept doing the same thing, we’d get the same results. I think we’re starting to see we’ve got some good youth. We’ll obviously play them, and we look forward to seeing them over the next couple of months.”
Backing Hardwick to the hilt
“We think Damien Hardwick’s a strong coach (now) for our footy club, and we think he’ll be a strong coach into the future as well . . . He’ll get better and better. I believe he has all the attributes required to be a premiership coach . . . (although) that doesn’t guarantee anything. In terms of Damien’s ability to coach, he’s a guy that has a clear sense of what he wants to see on the football field. And I think he carries himself with a great purpose and a great confidence . . . We’ve got a shared vision of the future, and what that looks like, and we believe Damien’s a very important part of that. It’s a shared responsibility, and that means everyone has to pull their weight and do their bit.”
Hardwick’s half-step back comments
“I understand the potential for that message to be misconstrued . . . But the message is the right message. The observation is the right observation . . . We got to three finals series with the same group, largely, and we’ve been found wanting each time. We were confident we had some elite, young players, and we had to get them into the team . . . We had to get Corey Ellis and Connor Menadue more game time. We wanted to have a look at (Daniel) Rioli . . . we think he’s going to be a good player. We wanted to have a look at (Jason) Castagna early . . . We (also) had to see if (Shaun) Hampson could offer us something. For us to continue to evolve and get better, we’ve got to give our younger players an opportunity . . . We’ve played a lot of young guys together at the same time – a lot in the back half, too – and that’s why we’ve looked incoherent at times. But Damien’s comment was absolutely correct.”
Hardwick’s best-list comments
“I think he’s talking about the best list he’s had to work with in his time (coaching Richmond) . . . That doesn’t mean he has a premiership list right now in the making. That means, in terms of the composition of the list –age profile, talent and positional – it’s as well positioned and balanced as he’s had in his time. We’ve two players 30 (years of age) – (Ivan) Maric and (Troy) Chaplin. Our elite players are about to enter their prime, we’ve got a bunch of young guys we’ve seen over the course of this season and, hopefully, we’ll see a few more in the next few weeks as well. I think some of those guys are of elite talent. Are they physically and mentally ready to play football consistently at the level? Probably not. But we’ve got to get them into the team.”
Reviewing performance
“Performance is a very complex thing, and there are a lot of inter-relating factors . . . The opportunity now is to really get under the hood to try and understand why we’ve performed short of expectations . . . People just shouldn’t assume we’re sitting on our hands doing nothing, treading water. Football clubs are very sophisticated these days. They review every aspect of their performance every day. We’re going through a fairly intensive phase of that at the moment and trying to understand, firstly, what are the real drivers of performance, and to what extent are they contributing – good, bad or indifferently – to our performance itself . . .”
Winning is what drives us
“We worked hard to build a really solid platform for the Club, but those things are a given now . . . Right now, I can assure you, we really care about winning. Everyone is invested in winning, and we have a vision to win a premiership for our footy club. At the moment, the fact it’s not going to happen this year is a real disappointment for all of us.”
Boosting the playing talent stocks
“There are people much more capable and experienced than me in these areas (recruiting and list management) that are working their backsides off to take advantage of what opportunities arise to improve our list.”

Wot shyte....hopefully just p.r. spin and not genuine delusion....

Hardwick is the worst coach in the comp and most can see it except the idiots that run the club.
they are so full of poo. Reading those comments they are unbelievably trying to spin it that the reason for the bad start was bc we played so many kids.
its not a lie if you truly believe it
-
Okay Benny, thanks for stopping by oer...
“It’s been a tough year, and that’s what happens when you’re short on expectations . . . We would have expected to be better, based on last year, and we’re not. So that’s tough, but that’s okay, that’s footy. We’ll work our way through that and we’ll be better for it . . .”
What do you mean by 'we would have expected'?
Are you unable to recall, fully, what the preseason aim was?
You say 'that's footy' but the club is more a brand now days....one that places playing footy, second.
So by your admission, the footballing department and selection committee made errors again, ones that we now find ourselves discussing by way of the failure that is season 2016.
What the supporters could ask at this point is, why did it take three conscutive finals losses to realise you were doing something wrong?
The truth of the matter is, Brendon, the club DIDN'T launch a plethora of youth at the start of the season.
That's just a lie. One that's told instead of admitting failure under your watch.
As usual, Hardwick was forced to use youth because of injuries to senior players.
History proves that.Miles debut is the prime example.
“We think Damien Hardwick’s a strong coach (now) for our footy club, and we think he’ll be a strong coach into the future as well . . . He’ll get better and better. I believe he has all the attributes required to be a premiership coach . . . (although) that doesn’t guarantee anything. We’ve got a shared vision of the future, and what that looks like, and we believe Damien’s a very important part of that. It’s a shared responsibility, and that means everyone has to pull their weight and do their bit.”
I'm sure you both have a grand, $hared Vi$ion for the future of the club and no doubt, it will get better and better.
Some may take umbrage at the fact he holds the record for most games coached without a finals win and they'd be justified in feeling so.Why is it that everyone outside your pay circle, is able to identify so many wrongs at that club, years before you or anyone does anything about it?
-

Gale thinks we're a bunch of toothless ferals who have no idea and we'll lap up the poo he's feeding us.

To start with, only an idiot would say that, especially at a presser. Ever heard about positive, psychological enforcement? Seriously Benny, we know why he said it.It was because he was feeling the pressure of failure and on this particular day, he found hiself in a corner.I digress.
What have C Ellis and Menadue done, for you to call elite expectations so early in their career? lol.
Castagna early? wtf?
You're still asking if Hampson has anything to offer?
Your points are all so contradictory to one another.
You're spinning it, my friend but keep going....it's wonderful
Hardwick’s best-list comments

You think he's talking about that, do you.
Get back to us when you find out.
Reviewing performance
“Performance is a very complex thing, and there are a lot of inter-relating factors . . . We’re going through a fairly intensive phase of that at the moment and trying to understand, firstly, what are the real drivers of performance, and to what extent are they contributing – good, bad or indifferently – to our performance itself . . .”
Again, you draw a long bow.To think people's image of you is one of sitting around doing nothing, then you're being far to kind to both yourselves and the protagonist.
We just think you're idiots. You just labelled our club as sophisticated :facepalm
yet you can't implement a winning, consistent structure, without alluding to violence against women or some other such political drivel to justify your own pay checks off the back of constant failure.
Tom Hafey says hi.
L O S E R !
Boosting the playing talent stocks
“There are people much more capable and experienced than me in these areas (recruiting and list management) that are working their backsides off to take advantage of what opportunities arise to improve our list.”
Mate, there are people much more experienced than you in YOUR AREA.
NFI !

This is the worst part

Will be or won't be? I assume you mean won't be?
I think Wallace summed Hardwick up pretty well the other day. Very capable coach during the week game/prep etc. One of the weaker coaches game day.
-
:lol
Wallace is stuck in the 70s and 80s.
Modern day coaches have very little influence once the game starts, it is all in the preperation.
......which is why he left our club so far behind the pack

Pretty much spot on. Most changes on game day are made by on field leaders...... :help

How can you make such a blanket closed ended statement like that?
-
I would have thought the first step to being a Premiership Coach would be to
A) get into the top 8
B) if you are in the top 8, win a final
C) Get into the top 4 as no one has won a flag outside the top 8 in a gazillion years
In 7 years Damian has achieved 1 of 3.
hmmmmmmm
How does Brendon define the word 'attributes"

Because he has conveniently forgotten to link the inputs to the outcomes

so how many games have you watched in recent years where the coach has made a tactical move from the box that had a big influence on the game?
listen to what recent players reply with when asked what the coach be saying to the players when a team is getting well beaten, or what the coach would doing.
I've heard those that have coached in recent times say as much, everything recent retired players say on TV commentary points to as much, and havn't witnessed too much to say otherwise.
tell us why you think it is wrong and how you gleaned your insight, if observing, listening and learning isnt your thing?

Every single game I watch at ANY level of football. Especially AFL.
Players tow the party line in any official capacity, at every opportunity. "Just play my role" etc
I've heard everything to the contrary.
If coaches had little to no affect during games, why would they sit so many coaches in the box, set them up with so much analysis hardware....
Sorry Pen, you're talking rubbish here.
-
every single game you have watched you see a master coaching move that influences the game?
And you have the gall to suggest it is I that is talking rubbish?
As for the analysis hardware, it for analysis of the game, mainly afterwards,to determine exactly what is going to plan and what isn't, and if you want to suggest any tactical moves made are due to all these hanger ons and their technology in the box, then that isnt down to one coach and his masterful, adaptable technical nouse anyway.
The game is so structured now, that is why you always hear ex, ( ex playerd dont have to toe any party line :lol ) players always rattle on about it.
when things go to the crapper, there is little the coaches can do but try to get the players to execute what they have been instructed better. That is why, no matter what team,or what coach, when they are getting beaten and the TV cameras pan to the coach, they all have the same helpless look of dispair on their face.

Interesting Gayle doesn't say Hardwick has ALL the attributes necessary.
In fairness, it's only been 7 years so far.
Plenty of time for Damien to get them all. :clapping

Couple of teams are interested, seriously. Dimma talking up makes one of those interested clubs up their offer
Point everyone might of missed is the fact he is a restricted agent. Dimma talking him up makes those club up their likely offers
So one of those interested clubs just need to make him offer and have him accept it.
Tigers have the right to match, unlikely they will, he walks we get a compo pick and everyone is happy
Look at the big picture

Benny: Damien what premiership coaching traits do you have?
Damien: Benny I can spell premiership and I can spell coaching.
Benny: I am impressed here is your extension to your contract, two years instead of one because you could spell both words.

Benny: That is something that we will tell the fans that you have when they ask why did we give you a two year extension.
