Rookie watch: Who should be kept, who should be cut?

RICHMOND

While there are concerns on the main list, the Tigers have done well with their rookies this year. A blend of mature-age recruits and project players have impressed and most will at least be retained or in some cases promoted. Departing veterans will clear the way, with more underperforming Tigers expected to be moved on.

Jason Castagna
The second-year rookie has announced himself at AFL level in the past fortnight after a period of sustained VFL form in the midfield. He is the strongest Tiger in the gym and ready for a senior contract. ELEVATE

Mabior Chol
An exciting prospect in the VFL, the Sudanese-born tall forward is raw and yet to play at the top level. The 19-year-old has shown promise in 10 VFL games, however, and is deserving of another year. RE-ROOKIE

Adam Marcon
After a dozen VFL games, the mature-age recruit looks close to making his AFL debut. The Tigers will be keen to see him at the top level before rushing a decision on the 23-year-old. RE-ROOKIE

Callum Moore
Eye-catching in the VFL this season but kicking has let him down. Still, upside should dictate the Tigers stick with the 19-year-old for a second season on the rookie list and see what he can become. RE-ROOKIE

Jayden Short
Has found his niche in the senior team as a rebounding defender, using his neat skills and daring instincts. The 20-year-old will be a nice addition to the senior list next year. ELEVATE

Ivan Soldo

Has played 17 VFL games in two seasons as a project ruckman, coming from a basketball background. The 20-year-old was never going to be ready by this point and another season should be in the Tigers' plans given what they have already invested. RE-ROOKIE

Rookie/late draft picks:

Jacob Ballard - inside mid (Richmond VFL)
Darcy Cameron -ruck (Claremont)
Shane Nelson - mid/small forward (West Perth)
Tom Goodwin - ruck (Coburg)

No rush with either..... that's only draft upgrades anyway ...can still elevate another before round one...

upgrade both Castagna/Short, others can stay on rookie list, a 2nd year won't hurt & give them next year & even year after (Chol) to earn a snr spot

I'm ok with that too....like I said, no rush with either of them....just hope clueless flogs don't start writing them off despite being told from the start that they were both long -term projects, as has happened with McBean...

Still waiting to see what others see in McBean (granted I didn't expect to see it in the AFL). At least he tried to make a contest on the weekend I guess.
