Match preview: Richmond v Geelong
AFL.com.au
9 August 2016
SUMMARY
A stirring win against Collingwood last Friday night eased the pressure at Tigerland after it reached fever pitch ahead of round 20. That the club was able to perform with a young team – and with draftees like Oleg Markov starring – made it all the more significant. Richmond is only ever one bad loss away from being put under the spotlight, however, and Geelong has had its measure for too long. It's been 10 years since the Tigers beat the Cats, with Brett Deledio the only current Tiger that played in that game. These teams meet with Geelong on a four-match winning streak and percentage is a focus for the premiership contender. If the Cats get a sniff of a big win don't expect them to let up, with a place in the top four up for grabs.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday, August 14, 3.20pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R5, 2015, Geelong 12.13 (85) d Richmond 11.10 (76) at the MCG
R7, 2014, Geelong 11.15 (81) d Richmond 12.4 (76) at the MCG
R6, 2013, Geelong 20.11 (131) d Richmond 13.9 (87) at the MCG
R4, 2012, Geelong 11.9 (75) d Richmond 9.11 (65) at Simonds Stadium
R18, 2011, Geelong 17.11 (113) d Richmond 7.9 (51) at Etihad Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Mitch Duncan was the difference between the sides when they last played, finishing with 29 disposals, 12 marks and two goals earning three Brownlow votes. Brandon Ellis had 33 touches for the Tigers in the round five game, last year.
2. Geelong is the highest scoring sides this season, ranked No.4 for points per game with 98. Richmond has struggled, ranked 14th with only 81 points per game.
3. Geelong has dominated Richmond over a long period of time winning the last 11 matches and 18 of 19 contests since 2001, including six by more than 60 points.
4. Both teams have been strong marking the ball inside 50, with Geelong ranked No.1 (14.9 a game) and Richmond ranked No.5 (13.5 a game).
5. Not in Richmond’s favour is their recent MCG history against Geelong, with the Cats winning the last seven clashes between the sides at the venue, dating back to 1999.
6. After arriving at Geelong at the end of last season ranked No.354 in the Schick AFL Player Ratings, ruckman Zac Smith has broken into the top 200, ranked No.198 overall.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Dustin Martin.
As he prepared to celebrate his 150th milestone last week, Martin said it was laughable to suggest he could pinch the Brownlow Medal from Patrick Dangerfield. But the two midfield stars come head to head this week, presenting a chance for the dynamic Tiger to measure himself against the best player in the game this year. It could be a crucial match when the votes are being read out on Brownlow Medal night next month.
PREDICTION: Geelong by 44 points

Plus it's Jacks 200th and he exudes what Richmond really is, not this half step Dimwit or dinky kick capt rubbish
-
l would really like to see this football club cause a upset today. Playing on our home ground you can expect a huge crowd minus me but the rest of the family is there. ;D l just refuse to go. :chuck

-
Quick Vickery 2 year contract great goal :snidegrin
-
Lol hampson taps straight to his opponent who peeled off and anticipated his mis hit lol
-
LMAO at Hampson tapping the ball to Zac Smith
Another hit out to advantage (of the opposition)
-
Hampson wins the taps easy its our midfielders who are refusing to do the hard work
-
Hampson tap out to Caddys feet, easy clearance to Geelong
-
No poo they are playing the same game plan as when Bowden played. Nothing has changed its the same short game go nowhere
-
:banghead :banghead
Riewoldt should split the sticks on a good day. That is pathetic
-
Rioli a young player kicks it straight through like a 200 gamer :snidegrin :gotigers
-
Hampson tap to dangerfields feet.
-
Hampson tap to selwoods hands. Geelong clearance
-
Hampson double handed tap to selwood.
-
Lennon = spud.
-
Hampson best on ground for Cats. They should give him a jumper to wear next quarter :lol
-
We could have broken the lines 4 times but over used the ball each time instead of the kick out front.
Cats backmen pushing up our forwards not following hard enough to take the pressure off the backs & mids over working
-
Hampson taps to the opposition:
* Tap on HBF throw-in straight to Zac Smith.
* Centrebounce tap after our first goal that allowed the Geelong mid to run onto. Resulted in the Cats 2nd goal.
* Ball-up on HFF, free uncontested tap straight down to Scott Selwood.
-
We're up for the fight today - but where was this in round 2-7.
-
Dusty on fire.
-
Hampson taps to the opposition:

* Centrebounce tap after our first goal that allowed the Geelong mid to run onto. Resulted in the Cats 2nd goal.
* Ball-up on HFF, free uncontested tap straight down to Scott Selwood.
Dont forget letting Smith to run fwd and take an uncontested mark and easy goal.
-
We should be a couple of goals up but our flaws (failing to hit open targets, poor decision making, overuse of possession, players falling over for no reason, opposition easily breaking our tackles) keep opposition clubs in games despite us being on top for most of the first quarter. It's also such an energy intensive style playing keeping off that it's hard to keep this up over 4 quarters.
-
Hampson tap to ellis on the half volley FINALLY
-
:banghead
Miles gives it up[. Jack should never have given it to him anyway. No-one was up forward
-
Hampson first mark.
-
Now that was a great contested mark by Hampson in defence :clapping ;D
-
You know we have so many small players we always get killed when the ball is in the sky
-
Nice that was a nice goal & Vickery again helps it through :gotigers
-
Goal Rioli Magic :gotigers
-
Our kicking efficiency is up to 81%
-

Richmond 46
Geelong 22
-

-
Geelong are seriously rattled. No way they will get close to a flag this year
-
Crap over use starting to creep in there & panic sets in.
otherwise top stuff Tigers :gotigers
-
Geelong are seriously rattled. No way they will get close to a flag this year
l'm rattled ;D
-
Anyone who saw the clip I posted last week remember Hampson ignoring the simple tap to Cotchin "because it wasn't the set play" and instead tapped in the middle of three Geelong players? Well watch Smith's ruckwork. You'll notice if a mans free he'll put it down their throat (done it at least 3 times already).
-
Crap over use starting to creep in there & panic sets in.
otherwise top stuff Tigers :gotigers
Middle 15 minutes of that 2nd qtr was very good but last the 10 minutes was ordinary. Stuffed up two clear goal chances with poor kicks inside F50 straight to a Geelong defender which Tiger forwards were in the clear. Then kept giving Geelong the ball back defensive side of the centre with stupid decision making and skill errors. Normally, they gift the opposition soft goals but the Cats are totally off so far today.
Richmond 2.4 7.4-46
Geelong 2.2 3.7-25
Goals: Rioli 2, Lloyd, Edwards, Vickery, Lennon, Hampson.
-
oh dear they are playing stupid again. Lennon going backwards delist
-
Grigg selfish list blocking dud
-
Ellis has to go
-
Why don't we see play like that more often
-
:gotigers
-

-
Premiers 2017 :gotigers
:shh
-
They should be attack attack to put more pressure on the scoreboard & crush the opposition. l don't understand why they play protect the score when they are only 35 up. 41 or 47 would be harder to chase down in the last. l fear this last quarter
-

Got to stick to the original gameplan no matter how dominant we are and no matter how crap the opposition is playing :P.
Btw, I was happy that Grigg ran to 50 and had that shot. He should have nailed it but it's how we should be playing when we go inside 50. Each player takes responsibility rather than trying to pass it off to a worse option and stuffing up goal scoring chances.
-
As good as we've been in terms of effort and attack at the footy, the number of missed tackles has again been ordinary today :scream.
First goal to the Cats as a result :scream.
-
Arm across Jack's shoulder yet no free ::).
-
:pray :pray :pray :pray :pray :pray
Just win it for the supporters & the club needs it
-
And now a soft free to Blicavs ::).
-
this not maning up the players is the dumbest thing l have ever seen in football. It acheives nothing but wasting energy
-
What odds geelong?
-
Tank time.
-
So you can throw the ball now.
-
So you can throw the ball now.
Yep
-
Here comes the choke
-
Two inside F50 kicks straight to Geelong defenders uncontested .
Panic mode on :P
-
Chokety choke choke
-
About to turn it off :banghead
-
Tank time.
-
Exquisite choke
-
see we play off every team 10 metres so there is no pressure & if they make a mistake they have ample time to pick it up & kick to the next free player it never ends
-
Is it a good draft?
-
Classic Richmond :clapping
-
Jack should have had a free how is them maggotts
-
Play an inefficient gamestyle and you tire.
Umps doing their best to get Geelong the win too.
-
The reason why Richmond will lose our 5 memberships
-
Bwahahahahaha
-
Jack should have had a free how is them maggotts
Lol at the umps
He was in the general vicinity of the ball hence it's ok to mull him
-
Vintage Richmond. A champagne choke for the ages :clapping
-
rigged
-
If the umpires give Dangerfield any votes you know its corrupt
-
Seriously?
Lol.
-
Another 'Elimination' effort.....still better to lose this one imo. BTW if Grigg, Hunt and Houli are still there next year I'll spew up.
-
The umpire was going to pay us a free blew the whistle then the siren went then he blew game over & thats it
-
Was Dimma out coached in the last?
-
Was Dimma out coached in the last?
Umps won it for them
-
Never going to win a flag if players in the leadership group can't get a possession when it counts
Someone please give me Shane Edwards last quarter stats
-
Was Dimma out coached in the last?
Umps won it for them
:nope :nope
free kick
Richmond 23.
Geelong 15.
-
The only positive from this, is the club won't get an opportunity to pretend things aren't as bad as they really are and paper over the giant cracks. Which is what could have happened if we had won today against an off Geelong (for 3/4ers) and pinched another meaningless win against the nothing to play for Saints next week. We are a soft and dumb football team playing an inefficient keeping off gamestyle designed to prevent scoring rather than winning games on the scoreboard. That's why we crack and get regularly run over as soon as the intensity and pressure goes up.
-
The umpire was going to pay us a free blew the whistle then the siren went then he blew game over & thats it
Lol
We would have missed.
-
Edwards signed a long-term contract recently didn't he?....At least Hammer and Lloyd are putting in
-
See the stupid dog kick by ellis into the Geelong player and gave them a goal?
He's a keeper.
-
Lennon was bitterly disappointing. Don't think he had an effective touch all game except for his first handball to Vickery and when he kicked it backwards
-
Anyone who laments leadership as an issue has no idea. Sick of that excuse. 18 players out there.
Sick of having the worst bottom 6 in the comp every year. We never have a heap of injuries, we just continue to pick rubbish players in 22, continue to draft rubbish players, continue to extend rubbish players contracts.
Thought Cotch and Rance had great games. Sick of the leadership excuse. Where was Selwood leadership when they were 6 goals down and gave a 100m free kick away.... Give me a spell.
No fitness or game plan when things are under pressure. Pathetic.

l said that at 3/4 time ;D
-
Is very hard NOT to blame the idiot coach. :thumbsdown
-
Bad loss. You can't be that far in front going into last and lose. Pathetic.
-
Is very hard NOT to blame the idiot coach. :thumbsdown
What about the players?

Standard weak as pee act from a punce
-

I can't blame rance, Martin, Cotch etc but I hold dimmer responsible for landing us the Griggs. Houlis, hammers, (the rest White hope) ahunts, etc. and not being aware of the choice of the ellises, concas and the rest.
-
and it was a great last A&R from the sour faced master stroker.
Sat there baffled and had nfi what to even TRY to do
-
We were being done all day just not on the scoreboard. Even with lady luck we couldn't win They are just a better side we are pretty crap. Time to turf Vickery he couldn't take a grab all day and he is sooo slow.

He needs to stop putting butter on his boots too. Falls over like a baby giraffe
-
Enough is enough losing to this head bucking bunch of pretenders. My most hated team and let them bloody win :banghead Smash them next time we meet...no more :banghead
-
Was a classic Cat & Mouse game....in reality Geelong outplayed us all day...30 scoring shots to 18 says it all....though somewhat contradictory , we could've been about 10 goals up at the last change....bombed at least 5 goals...
Riewoldt non-decision was a shocker but only ferals, dribblers & immature man-children blame umpires for losses...if you're good enough then one or two decisions shouldn't make a difference...particularly if you're 6 goals up at 3 quarter time....
-
Houli and Grigg need to give the ball to Short and Markov at every opportunity as they not only hit targets they make the right decision. These old spuds need to be bloody told to do this no questions asked! Rioli is going to be special :thumbsup
-
Houli, Grigg, Hunt, Vickery, Moore & Ellis should never play for our senior side again....
-
Whilst it was hard to take given our lead we were generally pretty good but looked much better when we moved the ball quickly. Again felt that as soon as the opposition changed things up we have no plan b so we need an influx of some good tactical coaches next season because Hardwick has one string to his bow and its just about snapped.
I think Markov needs to be given more licence to run, can see already the coaches have been in his ear and he is now stopping and propping with ball in hand like the rest of them.
-
Bellis is a squibber. This time it was shown beautiful by the camera's. Should never play another game ever
-
lol let me guess, we had the game won by the third and sh @+ a rock in the fourth trying to defend it
-
Its like youre a seer hooter

Maybe I've become so immune to getting on the emotional rollercoaster when it comes to match day that I see today's result so differently to others
Firstly, seriously not one person thought we'd win, so why the angst that we didn't?
Yep we were up by 6 goals at 3 qtr time and good sides don't lose from there but hell let's be honest we ain't no good side. Let's not pretend we are
I thought for 3 qtrs we played some really good footy. Yep we butchered the ball but when we moved the thing quickly we looked OK. It was better than what we've had served up for most of the season.
I enjoyed watching the kids. Really enjoying Oleg Mrakov, so much to like about this kid. A huge positive in a bleak year. Ditto Short, not his best game today but gee he's shown alot of good signs.
Would have loved a win but a win as MT mention papers overs the gapping holes. I'd rather lock in an early pick now
Yes i am peeved with certain players after today but what's new? My usual suspect never disappoint me, every week they let me down. That's what I mean by being immune now
So I suppose in a weird sort of way I veiw today as a win/win if you like. Saw some positive signs for the future but a loss in a macabre way was so important when we think draft time
-
Firstly, seriously not one person thought we'd win, so why the angst that we didn't?
Believe it or not, but I did. I have the losing betting slip to prove it.

On the same wavelength, saw the game exactly the same way, remove some deadwood and add some class in the off season and we have the makings of a reasonable side in 2017. Whether the coaching staff gets the best out of them is still my biggest concern as our gameplan is badly flawed and our record of player development is abysmal to say the least.

Robbo's take:
3. RICHMOND.
Enormous first three quarters and went into conservation mode in the final quarter. Couldn’t get their hands on the ball and when they did, run and space disappeared as the Cats upped their defensive actions. Too easy to say they choked. Ran out of fitness, ran out of leadership and ran out of luck. I suppose that’s a choke when you think about it. The positive is no-one’s calling for Hardwick’s head and Shaun Hampson’s revival as a footballer is worthy of a two-year contract extension.

Its like youre a seer hooter
I had to go to the movies with the missus but I saw we were doing alright... came out didn't know if I should laugh or cry
-
I thought the first three quarters was the best we had looked all year.
We were so on top in the third - one more goal would of been the knockout punch.
The last quarter was just an unfolding horror movie.
I'm just really disappointed we couldn't beat Geelong because they have owned us.
10 point loss in 2012
5 point loss in 2014
9 point loss in 2015
4 point loss in 2016

If Hardwick said at 3/4 time slow it down play "keepsies off" - he needs to be sacked
If Hardwick said keep going at them hard and play on - the players need to be sacked
Opinions?
