Match preview: Richmond v St Kilda
AFL.com.au
16 August 2016
SUMMARY
Three strong quarters were undone by a horror final term for Richmond in round 21, with Geelong running down a 35-point three-quarter time deficit. It was a turnaround coach Damien Hardwick saw coming, but his team – now full of youngsters – could not hold the premiership contenders off. For St Kilda, the tide turned earlier in their clash against the Sydney Swans, with an arm wrestle turning into a 70-point loss after half-time. Both the Tigers and the Saints are blooding new talent, and expect both to take that selection approach into Saturday's clash. The key to victory will be which young team can perform at its best for longer after respective fade-outs last week. Finals are out of the question now, but there is plenty to gain as young players search for confidence.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, August 20, 2.10pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R16, 2015, Richmond 13.11 (89) d St Kilda 10.13 (73) at Etihad Stadium
R22, 2014, Richmond 15.8 (98) d St Kilda 10.12 (72) at the MCG
R15, 2014, Richmond 18.9 (117) d St Kilda 11.7 (73) at Etihad Stadium
R14, 2013, Richmond 17.17 (119) d St Kilda 8.7 (55) at the MCG
R2, 2013, Richmond 14.15 (99) d St Kilda 12.10 (82) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Brett Deledio (28 disposals and three goals) and Dustin Martin (29) were the difference the last time these sides played. St Kilda midfielder Jack Steven picked up a Brownlow Medal vote with 30 disposals.
2. A strength for the Tigers in 2016 has been contested marking. They are ranked equal-third (12.6 a game), while the Saints are ranked equal-seventh (12.1 a game).
3. Richmond has now won the last six clashes between the sides, ending St Kilda’s dominance of 13 wins from 14 contests. The Tigers haven’t won seven in a row over the Saints since 1945-49.
4. The Saints have been a strong uncontested possession team in 2016, ranked fifth after round 21 and averaging 241.4 a game, well ahead of the Tigers (230.2 a game).
5. Richmond has struggled to get the ball inside 50 in 2016, ranked 17th and averaging 46.1 a game. The Saints are middle of the road, ranked 10th at 52.2 forward entries a game.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Ty Vickery.
The Richmond key forward is out of contract and a free agent at the end of this season, and the fact he and the Tigers are yet to agree to an extension speaks volumes about where his future lies. While maligned at times by his own club's fans, the tall forward could be a valuable commodity to a club in its premiership window. His ability to help in the ruck would only enhance his attractiveness to contenders. Strong performances in the final two weeks of the season will catch the attention of potential suitors, and maybe even the Tigers.
PREDICTION: St Kilda by 12 points

Go the mighty Sainters.
-
I noticed that every game that involves us you hear a commentator remark "this game hasnt reached any great heights" we play an ugly brand of footy and bring our opponents down to our level.
-
Jack is five metre clear on his opponent 45 meters directly in front leading beautifully for the ball and Houli kicks the ball wide to the pockets. :rollin

How does Ellis manage to get a game every week?
-
How does Ellis manage to get a game every week?
Must be related to Hardwick, he seems to do alot of pointing to teammates but has little if no impact on the game itself. Its mind blowing he hasnt had a stint in the VFL.
-
Montagna could have kept the ball in play but deliberately lets it go out of bounds and it's their free :banghead
-
Shockin turnover Elton

Seriously who cares about the result today - its basically the NAB challenge in August .
The positive is there is now a cheep cure for insomnia - just watch the replay of this match :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep
-
Cotch on triple M.
He sounds just like dimmer.
Deluded and on repeat.
-
Got to say, Todd Elton showed signs today.
-
So few posts about the game . It seems no one gives a toss.
-
I care, I care about the nice high pick we are getting
-
So few posts about the game . It seems no one gives a toss.
Nope, not really. Lose and we are a basket case, win and it is meaningless and it costs us an earlier pick.
-
Much easier and less stressful to follow when we're back to being poo. In the past few years I was worried about winning games and bummed when we lost. :gotigers
-
wow local footy was great today. Finals next week :snidegrin You guys & gals been watching Dumma & the squad. Oh dear l fear to ask the result.
Get ready for :santa they are tanking its pathetic
-
Oh dear l will just delete the recording. Not worth watching a game that has very few goals.
Any screaming marks or goals of the day. Any punch ups. Any shirt fronts by Bellis or Hunt. Tell me Dusty got the 3 Brownlow votes ? something at least to make me continue to follow this miserable rabble club :snidegrin
-
Got to say, Todd Elton showed signs today.
Agreed, looked better in the second half. Can take a great mark and covers the ground very well. He needs to play more no doubt.
-
Love our way of scoring!
-
idiot was happy that they kept them to 7 goals.
-
Love our way of scoring!
It is so disheartening watching Ellis, Grigg run around in circles and seeing Houli give the ball to team mates who are under pressure it is turned over :banghead own the bloody footy Houli :banghead Seeing any player move the ball forward with purpose is so unusual it takes you back :banghead Major changes will happen and I cant wait for them :clapping
-
The only reason it's not a major rebuild is because we have a decent top 5.
Everything else is garbage.
Whether that's to do with a clueless recruiting department or just that dimmer does their heads in
Trying to iinstill an Impossible game plan, the fact is we are just wasting another two years with him calling the shots.
-
Relax everyone dimma has this under control. Can't you see him relaxed and having a larf. You blokes worry too much. Chicken littles lol. He's working on our defensive structures now can't you see teams can't score big scores against us. During the preseason he'll work on our fast ball movement, offense and goal scoring. Come rd 1 we'll go BANG BOOM. No one will see it coming.
-
If Andrew Moore is retained for next year then the club is not serious about having on field success. Deplorable footballer.
-
Richmond's first half was below AFL standard
At half-time the Tigers had kicked two goals – including a goalless second quarter, laid 18 just tackles and had conceded 28 inside 50s, but managed just 12 itself, the second-lowest total at half-time for the season. It had 11 players who had not laid a tackle with Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin and Brandon Ellis among those without a tackle to their name at half-time. Richmond showed some spirit after the main break to finish the game with six goals (with two kicked inside the final minute), 42 tackles and 40 inside 50s to lose by nine points. On the evidence presented on Saturday, the Tigers look years away from finals.

Some on here didn't watch the olympics because of some imposters yet i can't fathom how they then can watch 2 hours from this pathetic excuse of a footballer. Yesterday was a comedy show and this bloke was the headline act.
He is the worst footballer I have ever seen in a long while and dimwit will depart this club in a worst state than what spud did. Difference between the 2 is we embarrassed the blues when it counted
Dimwit and Moore. FO

Tigers had ‘heads in their bums’: Cotchin
Jay Clark
Herald Sun
22 August 2016
RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin has delivered a savage assessment of the Tigers’ nine-point loss to St Kilda on Saturday, describing their performance as “insipid”.
The Tigers laid only 18 tackles in the first half and a season-low 44 for the game.
Cotchin said he was feeling “pretty flat and negative” after the loss and fired a broadside at some of his teammates.
“To come out the way we did and play — it sort of looked a lot of our players had their heads in their bums — so that’s really embarrassing from a team point of view,” Cotchin said on Fox Footy.
“From the captain down we need to be better than that.”
Richmond scored 44 points for the match, the third time in five weeks they have failed to hit the 50-point mark.
Cotchin said there was a lot of encouraging young talent at the club but believed some of the Tigers’ senior players could be more consistent.
He said it was important to finish the season off strongly against the Swans on Saturday at the MCG.
“We challenged late but the reality is the game was done and they (Saints) were far better,” he said.
“We still need to get better, we are miles off it at this stage.
“We have some really impressive young guys, our senior players are playing good footy buts it’s inconsistent footy and that’s the challenge for our group.
“If we want to be a team that takes big steps forward next year, then we need to play really well against outstanding opposition next week in Sydney.”
Coach Damien Hardwick admitted the “intensity and effort was off” against St Kilda and demanded a lift at the main change.
“We spoke to them at half-time and were pretty firm that we needed to respond and get our game up and going,” Hardwick said.
“It is a long season, especially with some sides playing for not much now … but we still expect better effort.”

OK lets watch this replay & see how bad things were on Saturday :-\
-
Edwards cant even kick 40 metres directly in front of goal seriously got to be traded or delisted
-
Umpiring shocking. They get paid a free after they slide into the legs of Vlossy WTF are them umps on. Cost a goal also what BS
-
Catch watch anymore. You cant go forward & kick goals if you have all your players pushed up to defense. Lloyd down past CHF that is rubbish coaching
-
Dimma's purposely making sure we have low scores so we can learn to appreciate Vickery's goal kicking prowess and celebrate his 5 year extension :clapping

Worst game ever? Richmond, St Kilda stage clanger-fest at the MCG in Round 22
Herald Sun
23 August 2016
WAS this the worst game ever?
It’s a big call, but St Kilda’s nine-point win against Richmond in Round 22 has to be in the conversation.
Both teams traded turnovers as just 13 goals were kicked for the match in perfect sunshine at the MCG.
Anthony Hudson, who was calling the game for Fox Footy, described the first half as “horrendous”.
“The turnovers in the first half had to be seen to be believed,” Hudson said in this week’s episode of the SuperFooty Podcast. “The funny thing was the third quarter was marginally more interesting, but there were virtually no scores.”
The second quarter is definitely in contention for the worst in living memory. Richmond was the main culprit; in the space of nine minutes:
— Sam Lloyd pounced on a loose ball in the goalsquare only to fall over the goal line and miss the footy, which bounced off his knee and through for a behind.
— Todd Elton dropped an uncontested mark under no pressure at the top of the goalsquare.
— Elton marked a Saints shot on goal at the other end of the ground and kicked over the head of a teammate standing 15m away. The ball landed in clear space 20m from St Kilda’s goal and a Saints gather ended with a Jade Gresham mark 5m out. Eddie McGuire summed it up in the broadcast: “This is just horrible defensive play”.
The Tigers scored just 0.4 for the quarter while the Saints managed 2.3.
Unfortunately Gresham’s goal at the 13:45 mark of the second quarter was St Kilda’s last until Nick Riewoldt converted a set shot at the 1:55 mark of the final term. Amazingly in that time Richmond barely closed the gap on its opponent.
After Jack Riewoldt kicked a goal from a free kick 1:53 into the third quarter, neither team kicked a goal for the rest of the term.
Among the turnovers, missed targets and mistakes, the two teams managed to set the following records:
— THE combined score of 101 was the lowest of any match this season.
— THE shot at goal accuracy of 31.7 per cent was the worst of any match this year.
— St Kilda’S score of 55 was the lowest by a winning team this season.
— Saint David Armitage had 11 clangers for the game, including eight free kicks against.
Armitage’s eight free kicks against was the fourth most ever recorded by Champion Data.

-
The game was so bad it was hilarious.
Yep. I wanted the MCG loudspeaker controller to put on the Benny Hill music during the game! :lol
-
Watching it again now. l have never seen a club play so many players out of position. Umpires are shocking. RFC shocking. We stop them from scoring yet we play like we have a massive lead & refuse to move the ball forward or players present themselves up forward. Dropping Vickery when we need another tall up forward is dumma :lol Handballs to hot players 50 times l reckon. Why do the coaches not stop it. The are cheating tankers :banghead
-
Sunny day great conditions & these 2 clubs kick 101 points between them. What a pathetic game of football :snidegrin
