7.5 to 8.

I rate him because he was an accumulator who kept willing himself and spent everything he had in the tank for the team. He was just not as damaging with his disposals which stopped me from giving him a 9 or 10.

Campbell was pretty similar to Cotchin.

Great accumulator of stats that don't really hurt the opposition.

Both had one great year ( Campbell 1995) ( Cotchin 2012 ) and spent the rest of their careers teasing but never really reaching those heights again.

2 different footballers. Cotchin's game fell away some when the AFL brought the rule in where players dive on the ball. Cotchin was fearless at chucking his body in sliding & taking the players balance away from them. Take a look back at games when he first played & how the rules of football took away a players natural ability to win the hard ball in todays game.
Cotchin needs to use the ball better by penetrating it with longer kicks instead of setting up with his handballs to his team mates who get smashed when they receive it under pressure from him.

My theory is his kicking went Shyte after we played him with the leg injury

Used to kick very well

Campbell was good in 1992. I remember a game against Carlton at VFL Park where he had about 41 possessions and kicked about four goals from memory. He was a very good player.

I rated Campbell very highly in his first few years, but as time wore on he slid back.  He is probably one who played a season or two too many ...
Just on Cotch with his kicking & legs, it pays to remember since 2012 Cotch has had both hips operated on, one at a time.  His hip joints had to be pulled apart & the ball on top of his femur scraped & re-shaped before putting the joint back together.  Its fair to say he hasn't been the same since but he is improving each year.  Has it affected his kicking?  You'd have to ask him, but that is quite a procedure to recover from, twice, without missing a game!  Kreuzer has also had the same hip operations done too.
The things these guys go through just to play football!     :-\

Are you serious? The bloke bled Yellow & Black. Was born a Richmond tragic.

The club was an absolute basket case during his career. The board wouldn't give Swooper an extension or commitment. When Northey jumped ship they hired an ex scum cheat that DIDNT want to coach anymore. After the cheat was sacked the club thought it a great idea to unleash Mr Gimmick himself, the Geisch  :rollin

A 4 time B & F winner and 2 time all Australian. 8/10.

Nup. He didnt bleed yellow and black. He bleeded himself - how do you think he ended up captain?
Title: Re: Wayne Campbell -How do u rate him as a player?
Post by: TigerMonk on August 27, 2016, 10:03:46 AM
He was a All Australian player more than once. Picked by Australian selectors  ::) Not people who sit in their bedroom playing AFL games on their play stations or playing fantasy football & bashing their keyboards up cause they know little of what it takes to play at the top level & the sacrifices these players make not just to play football but to do so over a very long time. Take players like Robert Harvey, Brent Harvey, as just 2 fine examples. 20 years of sacrifice & most top players last 10 years

A club Best & Fairest many times who had team mates who were also top footballers that would fit perfect into other clubs.
Our downfall was having coaches who had no interest to take our club anywhere but to purposely keep us below their own ex clubs. As mentioned above when Richmond made the big mistake of sacking Northey "a Richmond man". We were & always have been doomed. l like to write a few other things but l can't cause l would be sued but someone will say something on video one day.

Just remember these words, People are paid to infiltrate other clubs. VFL/AFL

l would rate Wayne Campbell a 7.

Coaches had a bad habit of playing footballers injured & pushed them to the brink of career ending injury. Campbell should have retired a year before.

However if you want to compare him to Cotchin who came to the club in the 2007 draft who has won 3 x B&F & was All Australian 1 time. He will never make the Australian side again because injury will creep up on him quickly in the next 2 years as he is battling now. He should be a Brownlow medalist but strangely why has he not been rewarded this yet. Corruption ?
Richmond fans needs to start a petition & hand it too the AFL & demand it be given to the rightful B&F

So RFC are still in the wilderness & many always point to the players. Point your frustrations towards the admin & the coaching staff who allow this rubbish style of play to go on year after year. Get Malthouse a Richmond man to coach the club for it to move forward to success cause otherwise we will keep getting the same poo dished up.

FWIW on Fox Footy now,  Season 2010 round 14 with players who are still in the side today. Many have still done nothing but many use the term champions & they will come good well l'm still waiting like us all. Champions don't go Sideways, Backwards, Circles, but are instructed by those who just maybe don't want us to be a power again.

I think you're both right.

At the start of his career, wayne did bleed Yellow and Black. He was even out there rattling tins for the Save our Skins campaign. He was as passionate for Richmond as I've ever seen a player. Then a few years later, he was put on the chopping board as trade bait. The deal fell through and that really changed him. His passion for the club died. He was then in it for himself.

I can't blame him for that. Not at all.

Campbell had less than half the balls of Cotchin...and unless you 'd like to point out the matches where Campbell was getting smashed at the bottom of packs and throwing himself from contest to contest while the rest of the side stood and watched...then I'll stand by that comment....

When Knights got taken out by Libba who was the ONLY player that wanted to kill Libba?

Yes it was Wayne Campbell.

I saw many games where he absolutely pushed himself to the brink to get the boys over the line. One game vs Melbourne I still remember where he amassed nearly 20 in the last to get us a win.
He also could kick the crunch goals a captain is normally expected to nail.  And his field kicking was decent.

Dio, I agree with most things you post but on this I don't agree. I think Campbell played for the jumper unlike most in the current regime that don't even like playing footy because it's not everything to them but they're just good blokes.

I ask you this, when a final had to be won against the scum cheats which team captain made sure we won the game?

Campbell had 17 possesions plus help from a host of others that day andthat was one of his better years when he was under Northey, (remember I said the majority of his career, not all of it) who didn't wear selfish players ...when Cotchin did the same in second half of the EF v Carlton only Maric & Vlastuin went with him...but people seem to want to pretend that never happened because of the next two EF's...

Not the only reason but IMO Campbell, Knights & Free were all better captains than Cotchin.
But I also think that this current regime has ruined what could've been one of our greats but unfortunately has been ruined.
