DAMIEN Hardwick says Richmond will be an active player in trade talks after admitting he gave up on making finals this season two months ago.
Hardwick said he had an eye to next year when he blooded youngsters such as Mabior Chol and Callum Moore, who were way out of their depth against the Swans.
Richmond saved some face with a five goal to three final quarter but still lost by a season-high 113 points, conceding 39 scoring shots to the rampant Swans including 11 to Lance Franklin (7.4).
It is the Tigers' fifth loss of 10 goals or more this season after recording none last year.
Over the last six rounds Richmond had one win (against Collingwood), five losses and a percentage of 55.04.
“We sat back after the Port Adelaide game and thought, ‘We’re not going to make it this year’ and had a pretty sole focus about trying to find out about some players. We realised the results weren’t probably going to go our way, but at least we had a focus about what we were trying to achieve,” Hardwick said.
“Mabior Chol, was he ready? No he wasn’t, we knew that, but it’s going to be a good stepping stone for Marbs to know what it takes to play the rigours of AFL footy.
“Callum Moore, exactly the same — have a taste boys, this is what it is. We think you’re going to be good players, you’re certainly not ready to play AFL footy at the minute but we think for us to go forward you guys have to take a big step forward.”
Hardwick said Richmond would be aggressive in trying to acquire new talent post-season.
“We’ve got to improve our list, improve our talent, there’s no doubt about that.
“It’s going to be a big off-season for us, we have to be players in that field.
“We will be active in the trade period but so will 17 other clubs are trying to do the same thing.
“We’ll put our best foot forward and try to get some quality players to the football club.”
But he said that wouldn’t involve trading out established stars.
“Those players, as far as I’m concerned, will be staying.”

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says he wants to hold on to his small core of experienced top-line players, despite admitting the need for the Tigers to re-build their list.
The free agency period officially opens on October 7 and the trade period begins three days later.
Speculation has been rife around what the Tigers might do after enduring another season that promised plenty but delivered little.
Following the team’s final round 113-point humiliation at the hands of the Sydney Swans at the SCG, Hardwick put on a brave face, commending the Swans’ emphatic securing of the minor premiership, and pointing out that his side was vulnerable given the decision to play several first and second-year players with an eye to the future.
But it is at the top end of the market that most Tigers fans wonder how the post-season musical chairs might play out.
Asked if the Tigers’ more experienced players like Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt might be part of the trade activity, Hardwick said: "It’s a difficult question because those guys are really, really good players. We are where we are - we don’t have a lot of really, really good players. So those players, as far as I’m concerned, will be staying."
Nonetheless, Hardwick said, the club would "obviously" be active in the trade period.
"Once again, it’s a competitive industry. We’ve got to put our best foot forward and try and get some quality players to our football club.
"(It’s about) what’s available out there. From our point of view, list management decisions will be made over the course of the next month or so. We’ve got to improve our list, improve our talent, there’s no doubt about that. But so are 17 other clubs at the same time."
"It’s been a disappointing year - it’s what you learn from the year that’s important. Look at any sporting club, any organisation, there’s always a kick in the backside at some stage, and this is our kick in the backside."
Hardwick said Richmond had "put all our eggs into 2017" after the round 15 loss to Port Adelaide, after which they realised they would not play finals football this year.
It was risky, especially against some top sides late in the season. However, it was the right thing to do, the coach maintained.
"We put some talent out there that’s not ready. We readily acknowledge that," he said.
"For us to get better, those players have got to understand what’s required to play at the AFL level. I think in the last five or six weeks, we’ve played three out of the top four sides, which was always going to be a challenge, but we decided to take this pathway.
"The last six weeks has always been about trying to find out about players. I think we had seven first or second year players that we were trying to find a little bit about.
"Mabior Chol, was he ready? No he wasn’t. We knew that but it’s going to be a good stepping stone for ‘Mabs’ to actually understand what it takes to play the rigours of AFL footy.
"That was the whole exercise going forward. Callum Moore exactly the same."
"We played a side tonight that was playing for something … but we were probably looking more for season 2017 more so than the result tonight."

Well hang on a minute, we have gone from "the best list in my time at Richmond" to needing to be agressive at the trade table. I mean has he actually come out and said he severly overestimated the quality of list or has that comment just been totally forgotten?
Seems to me that this guy doesnt have a clue when it comes to identifying talent and with an insipid gameplan to boot this season has been doomed from the beginning.
"Its what you learn fom the year", well its quite clear we have all learned that moving forward you are clearly not the man for the job, why haven't the decision makers come to the same conclusion?

Understand that Owl, i'm coming more from the Miles debacle angle where he was clearly better than than what was running around at the time but Hardwick refused to accept it or just couldnt see what was right in front of him.
Again this season he continued to see things in BEllis and others who are clearly not up to it and then ignore those performing well in VFL or at least having the ability to perform if given an opportunity at AFL level.
His delusion and stubbornness is putting this club back years and undoing any good work he did for the first 3 or so years when he took on a rabble of a team.

Clearly tanking. Zero interest in trying to win the game. I'm embarrassed that an RFC could and would do that, but after watching the ressies yesterday I'm not as concerned as some here about next year.

Happy with the game style in the VFL? An issue for me is we do so many things right in the VFL regarding game style, tackling, harassing,etc.....can our regular AFL players reprogram what is ingrained in them from years of inept instruction from Hardwick?

My biggest issue is his statement of 'we have to learn from mistakes'...
Do we not review games? Why don't we learn lessons from week to week? What on earth would we now from the Sydney loss that we didn't know before?

Another peeve. Is Hardwick the most 'give no fudges' coach.
Never looks upset in the box, no emotion, no activity. Just nothing. Never wears a headset, rarely seen using the phone. Is there any communication to bench? Is there anything to communicate, as in Plan B or C? Seems like our 'big' changes are from qtr to qtr, like Lids moving to backline after a qtr time break.
No disappointment after losing either, just laughs, smiles and jokes with the media. No care in the world, why would he have to bust his gut to get the players to perform? 2 more years.
