Who will be a breakout player at your club?
ELIZA SEWELL,

PICKING the big improvers is one of football’s great off-season games — and it can be played at the individual level as well.
Another year under the belt, another pre-season, more exposure to “the system” means several players will take a massive leap this year.
Some of them are obvious, some less so.
With the help of Champion Data, we’ve picked five players who are poised for a breakout season.
Richmond — Josh Caddy: was the fifth-ranked mid-forward in the league, averaging 86
Geelong wanted Josh Caddy to stay and for good reason. The new Tiger was the fifth-ranked mid-forward last season and is expected to blossom with more midfield time.
“We love what Josh is going to bring to our team, he’s a big-bodied, aggressive midfielder that can run, win the contested footy, and also kick goals,” Richmond talent boss Dan Richardson said.
“At the 24 years of age, his best football is still in front of him, and that’s really exciting for us.”

Still waiting for Vlastuin to break out. He needs more midfield time also.

Pretty hard to break out from the back pocket...... ::)

Lmao at 10 years on and the articles are still only championing the unknown quantity as a means of positive reinforcement for fans.

Is it time for Grimes to come good? 25 yo 79 games and managed to stay on the park for 16 games last year but only averaged 12 possies.
-
I suggest they should breakout next year and break away from the chip chip Benny Hill rabble non structured football they played in 2016. Who cares about individuals, we need the team to play well first...

Don't think I'd be looking at his possession count as a measure of his impact...

Be a few players wanting to breakout of contracts if Dimma serves up the same tripe gameplan as last year

Shane Martin

True possesion count is misleading for defenders. But will he go up that notch again to become A grade every week

I don't think Grimes will ever be an A grade player. I'm a huge fan of Grimes and I think he is underrated but he will never get to A grade standards. (Rance standard)
If he can stay fit and as most of us know Rance is simply the best backman in the game, we still need to find a better option than Astbury. I'm hoping the new kid or C. Moore can be that option.
I don't rate Astbury at all but if he is ever going to be AFL standard he needs to play forward imo

I'd rather they had a career defining season, although most of them already have

Yes but not in the way we would like

What I like about Grimes is he constantly improvin year after year just like Rance did. What I dislike is he is skinny and injury prone and as such 50 games off where he ought to be and a preseason or two. Maybe he has peaked. He is 25. Maybe he can go from B to B+ A-. He already floats into B+ in some games. I continue to hope.

And IMHO Astbury won't make it either. We need to find a KPD to replace him.
-
I'm guessing Yarran will be the "break out" player at Freo?

We do but since we don't really have any to develop I more hope he finds his 2014-15 (can't remember what year) form when he was playing very well and plays to that level consistently

I know when you are talking about and I agree he did a good stopping job on a few decent big forwards (Cloke was one) but the game has changed since then. Like Hawthorn we need backmen that can compete but just as importantly, they need to be able to help get the footy out of our backline and moving forward so the opposition backs are under pressure not ours. Astbury is too slow both by foot and by mind.
He does have have a good set of mits so try him forward but he isn't a backman IMO.
-
Astbury is a perfect example of how the lack of quality KPPs has meant that the club is forced to play him back. He is a forward but had been developed back to fill a hole. He has been cruelled by injury and has lost both pace and agility because of it. Still a better bet up forward IMHO.
-
The last 2 posts are pretty much right. Key backs these days need to be able to run and rebound to release players up the ground and swarm fwd with numbers. Then belt back as needed.
The game i fear has gone past the bog bodied, less mobile backs like Astbury. His speed is poor and endurance not great. Hopefully im wrong on his prospecymts because we need him or another big body to step up this year. Otherwise the backline will leak.
-
Almost worth developing Callum Moore as a key back. He has the leap and endurance. Of course fast tracking Garthwaite would also be sensible IMHO. I see Mabior as a forward if he makes it.

From the limited time I have seen Callum Moore I'd say he is more a natural forward than a backman. Same with Chol.
-
Rioli, I think he will surprise many this year and really take it to another level, beyond any of our expectations.

What only one. we need about three more if Astbury goes.
Grimes well lol another of the soft as butter brigade.Has never been and never will be KPD.FFS he plays mostly on sml/med types and still gets rag dolled.
The two i am praying have break out yrs are moore and Chol and both as fwds.

Ive got a feeling he'll have a few quiet spells, but Mrarkrov is probably one name i'd throw up.
-
I think you missed an 'r' in there, it's Mrarkrorv

I think we saw the emergence of the next big thing last year in Ben grifftths...tipping he can go to the next level and play 3 good games in a season, with the view of having a break out season in 2026
