Jack Riewoldt shouldn’t hide his passion, says Richmond recruit Josh Caddy

Jay Clark,
Herald Sun
February 4, 2017

RICHMOND recruit Josh Caddy has lauded Jack Riewoldt’s passion for the club as the veteran spearhead eyes a return to the Tigers’ leadership group.

Riewoldt’s body language has sometimes landed him in trouble with the goalkicker unable to explain why he had been overlooked for a position in the leadership group in recent years.

But Caddy, who arrived at the club in October’s trade period, said Riewoldt had been an energetic and positive presence at training this pre-season.

“He is an intense character and he is full of beans, no doubt — that’s the thing that has stood out for me,” Caddy said.

“Everyone looking in will have their opinion on him, but for me he is just an emotional person and he doesn’t hide those emotions.

It usually isn’t hard to guess how Jack Riewoldt is feeling.
“Sometimes he might show his cards too much in terms of those emotions, but for me that’s just because he wants to win.”

The Tigers will unveil a reshaped forward line this season led by Riewoldt and Ben Griffiths after the departure of big man Tyrone Vickery to Hawthorn.

Caddy said Riewoldt, 28, was still at the top of his game, entering his 11th season.

“He’s a gun,” Caddy said. “Remember he has won the Coleman (Medal) a couple of times (in 2010 and 2012) and hopefully he can have a massive year for us up forward.”

Jane Caddy is really in the spotlight lately. Maybe he should just shut the stuff up and let his footy do the talking.
JR has come across as a spoilt brat far too often it is not a good look and we dont need it.How does anyone follow a bloke who even if hes not, looks like he is having a dummy spit every 5 minutes.

Lead by actions and channell that passion into actions.

Yep unlike Richo who couldn't get it under control his whole career, JR has mastered it the last few years. To anyone who actually watches the games this should be apparent.

He has controlled it to a point now that it is acceptable. At least he shows hurt in losing rather than big smiles at the end of lost games shown by some.

Has come across as a spoilt brat far too often as portrayed by the media. Piece of advise Claw, don't be seduced by what the media want to drive and achieve. Jack is a ripping guy who shows passion like many other AFL players however he does have a larger profile than most others thus, it gets raised by average media types to justify their existence. I am so happy a player of his quality is playing for the Tigers including his unwavering passion :clapping

The main reason the media started focusing on his body language is because he followed in the footsteps of Richo....

He had major attitude problems and it was unacceptable. He's pulled his head in now thankfully. I do admire his passion and loyalty - it's not been easy for him up forward the last few years

I'd rather follow/support/barrack (not sure which one I am anymore) for a club with a player like Jack at the helm over a boring robot that just says what they think we all want to hear.
I'll take the good with the bad anyday.

Our great club lacks passion and it has since 1995. As soon as anyone starts to play with a bit of flair or with a bit of emotion the club bores it out of them.
I for one never really minded when Richo, as one of our most experienced players, had a go at a teammate if he thought they didn't do something right. Richo had his faults but he bled black and yellow and in my opinion that gave him a few concessions.

Take a look at our captains over the last 20 years- all yes men to say the least.

All I want to see is players that would do anything for the club.

Maybe but excuse me for actually supporting the few genuine guns in our team. Reckon he'd be in the leadership group of every other club.

Jack is one of my favourite players. He is one of our best. That doesn't mean he is immune from criticism. In his early days he did spit the dummy a bit too much and often to the detriment of his team and team mates. He has toned that down with more maturity and is now more a team player. He would be an excellent addition to the leadership group.

I am just wondering how you could take my comments in a negative way? I even praised him for showing he at least bleeds for the club.

Can you explain your attack on my comment?

Well you gave me the roll eyes emoticon for one and an innocent comment was turned into the "understatement of the century" by you in the same breath. I call that at least a harsh criticism which can be looked at as a form of attack on what I said.  How else would anyone interpret it?

Especially as my post did not require any comment at all IMHO. It was just my personal opinion. I wasn't disagreeing with another post or anything.

I think he's on field behaviour is exemplary- you think it's acceptable, I presume this is because you read the herald sun and listen to sen.
He has on field presence which is apparently not allowed when you're a forward....

Again you are attacking me for NO REASON! Why say I read the HUN and listen to SEN? What are you insinuating? That is another personal attack which is not warranted. I guarantee you I have been to more footy games than you in my life and thus form my own opinion from what I see. I also was specifically commenting about his display of emotions on field which he has controlled well, displaying enough without going overboard with abuse to team mates. All other aspects of his on field behaviour are and have been perfect.

If you think that spitting the dummy at team mates up field is good for team spirit, well then I am not sure how many team sports you have played. He does not do that any more or at least it's much more modified with a more instructional message rather than an abusive message now. That's what I was commenting on. If you don't think he ever did that well that's your prerogative but don't tell me what I have or have not seen.

Reading the Hun or listening to SEN isn't a crime and it shouldn't be considered an attack. Again, disagreeing with a couple of emoticons isn't a personal attack, I'm starting to feel personally attacked. I happen to think Jack is a champion - in every way on and off field and I do think Richmond fans can get sucked into media vortex of key forwards/he's a Richmond player let's stir the pot.
I've played more than enough team sport to value input and commitment to the cause over what external people think as the priority. As for his dummy spitting at teammates, I think you're getting him confused with Richo.
Finally, if you're going to post an opinion, expect it to be challenged or disagreed from time to time -  don't get all wound up and accuse people of attacking you when they disagree, in my case - that's just not the case.
I don't disagree with everything you post and have also agreed with you from time to time.
I do feel protective of Jack because he's an easy target and also Batch due to his injuries. You obviously don't rate these players in the same way that I do - no problem here.

Now, how the hell did you come to the conclusion I don't rate Jack? Do you actually read what I write or do you take a comment and amplify it so as to cover all aspects of that player? Just because I said he used to dummy spit a bit more than I, his team mates and his coaches may want, doesn't mean I don't think he is a fantastic footballer! He is in our top 3 or 4 at the club!

As for Batch, I have said many times here, he tries hard but is limited. He has only one side and isn't blessed with pace. I wish him all the best but he has had 6 years to show us something and only in one year would you call his output "ok". I hope he stars for us but I don't think he will. His past performances don't indicate he will. I am happy to sit back and have him prove me wrong.

The topic of this thread is basically Jack and the emotions he shows on field. You just should have stopped when you said you believe his behaviour in this area is exemplary and that I believe it is acceptable. There is the difference. There was no need to say that I don't rate him OVERALL, bring Batchelor into the conversation or tell me that I get my opinions form the Herald Sun and SEN. If you can't see that it is you that has forced this conversation side ways and not sticking to the topic, well I can't help you. The mods aren't playing favourites, they just read what people post. If you are unable to see your folly then nobody can help you.

The bit about preaching site rules to suit a purpose/ argument wasn't directed solely at you to suggest it was is in incorrect. It was directed at everyone.

Because in the last few days this preaching rules to justify personal insults towards other posters has gone overboard.  It's not just in this thread, have a look around it is many threads.

I can remember being driven round in the back of the old mans brand new Sle 1981 commodore mid afternoon in the early rounds of that year. With the am radio on. And every game (all 6) were in Melbourne with a 2pm start, so the around the grounds crosses would be numerous and on par timing wise. Come 2pm the city would stop.

Then wed go home and burn off the rest of the autum leaves in the incinerator (coz it was legal of course).  The smell of Melbourne on still autumn days when our footy team was decent  :gotigers

Yep. Can remember some classic pearls from Jack as they were delivered live...

"The trouble with him is he keeps on going where the ball ain't"
"Bosustow? He's just a good ordinary player"
"He raised his arms up like giant testicles"

 :lol

"He's a good ordinary footballer"
"He's so scared he sleeps with the lights on"
"An Essendon supporter is a Collingwood supporter that has money"
"Things aren't the same now that there are five teams in the top four"
"I want you to pair off in threes"
"They've got a couple of good players in Harvey"
"Flanagans trying to use some pace he hasn't got"
"There weren't too many best man on grounds"
"If you don't mind umpire
"Geelong have copulated." - capitulated?
And describing a player who'd had a disappointing game: "He got where the ball ain't."

Only beaten by the famous Yogi Berra......

Baseball is 90% mental, the other half is physical.
No one goes there nowadays.  It's too crowded.
You better cut that pizza up into four pieces. I'm not hungry enough to eat six.
Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.
When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
You can observe a lot by just watching.
The future ain’t what it used to be.
It’s like déjà vu all over again.
A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.
He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.
The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase.
I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.
You wouldn’t have won if we’d beaten you.

And of course:
It ain’t over till it’s over!

Forgot my favorite Dyer quote...

I hate Collingwood so much, I don't even watch black and white movies!

I do not mind Jack showing his passion. It is the way he plays his football. To me it shows that he cares about his performance and the performance of the team. Having said that I agree he needs to ensure that he does not let his emotions detrimentally affect his game but there is nothing wrong in being passionate. I really respected Richo and Roy Keane from Man Utd for the passion they displayed on the field.
