Trent Cotchin exacts revenge on Adam Treloar, reminding the star midfielder Collingwood is no closer to a flag than Richmond

And for Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin, it was exacted in the most satisfying of fashion against Adam Treloar on Thursday night at the MCG.
In defeating Collingwood by 19 points, the Tigers not only went 2-0 for only the third time since 1995, but reminded Treloar of the chasm that exists between the Magpies and a flag.
And if we hit rewind and contemplate what transpired in last year’s edition of the blockbuster fixture, that reminder was more than significant.
While the main storyline to arise from Collingwood’s one-point win in 2016 was Richmond’s utter capitulation, the subplot was Treloar’s war of words with the Tigers.
He picked to play for Collingwood over Richmond upon his return home to Victoria because the Magpies had, in his opinion, “a better list”.
With Richmond leading by 17 points in the 21st minute of the final quarter, Cotchin wasted no time in reminding Treloar of his apparently foolish statement.
But with Collingwood triumphant at the end of the match, Treloar was vindicated.
He ruffled up Cotchin’s hair after the siren — an exchange which was playful to some, patronising and disrespectful to others.
Yet some 355 days later, it was Cotchin who had the last laugh.
Not only did the Richmond skipper earn best on ground honours on Thursday, but he laid two huge tackles in the final term, both on his Collingwood counterpart.
“I thought he was outstanding, emphasised by his two last tackles on Treloar,” Damien Hardwick said of Cotchin after the 19-point win.
“Trent plays his best footy ... when he stalks the opposition. We saw that tonight. He started us off really well.
“I thought his last quarter was huge and that’s why his captain. He’s a really important leader for us.
“That’s when he plays his best footy when he (tackles hard). It’s great to have your skipper do it. You don’t have to get a response from anyone else. He just leads in that area.”
Cotchin had every right to rub Treloar’s head after the match, returning the audacious favour.
But that’s simply not his style.
Indeed, when interviewed after the win his first instinct was to praise the opposition.
“Collingwood are a fantastic side, we saw that throughout the JLT Series,” Cotchin said.
“They’ll win a lot of games this year, the Pies.”
The newly anointed 2012 Brownlow medallist has never been confrontational. He let’s his actions do the talking.
And while that was a slight on his captaincy last year when the Tigers were underperforming, that same criticism cannot be made of him in 2017. Even if we’re only two rounds in.
Cotchin racked up 26 disposals, seven clearances, eight inside 50s, two goals and laid a game-high seven tackles.
It was the kind of performance his 2012 season was built upon — the kind that made him one of the most promising young midfielders in the competition at only 22.

definitely all the more sweeter that the tackle Cotchin laid was on Treloar. I did wish at the time he crossed over to our club but I don't think he is worth 2 first round picks. Either way, great captain's game and here's hoping the brownlow medal has really invigorated his playing style and for him to return to 2012 form.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing.
We got Prestia, Caddy, Rioli AND pick 56(ish?) for what would have cost us Treloar. I know what I'm taking ;)
Edit: Pick 56 (have to admire my own memory sometimes) which ended up being pick 53 (academy picks etc) & we took Jack Graham.
Info thanks to wikipedia WP ;)

We also traded away our 2nd rounder for this year to GC for Prestia.

Collingwood have as bad a recruitment department as we do.

Bump. ;)
Could make a pretty strong argument that Treloar picking C'wood was a big factor in us winning the flag.

Oh god love it :rollin Treloar
Let's smash the Pies next year, will be a lotta fun

That's a pretty damning argument against the "chase the big fish" mentality. No A-graders (not yet anyway) but we gained effectively 4 key premiership players on mostly middle-range salaries by missing out on Treloar on big bucks.
Chasing the big fish now seems to hurt clubs. Judd only carried Carlton to a couple of finals but they gave up Josh Kennedy and a first round pick (Masten?) for him and now their list needs to be fully rebuilt from scratch. You could argue that Buddy is also hampering the Swans since he went up there. Good enough list to make the finals but its aging thanks to Buddy's $$$ hurting their list management. 2016 may have been the last chance for the current Swans older core to reach a GF.

I agree with this.
Instead of paying someone $1,000,000/year (bar Dusty) you're better off getting two blokes for that amount, or at least 3 guys instead of 2 on huge salaries.
Best A-grade players are the home-grown ones who are prepared to stay for below-market rates.

This is a serious questin when we play these mugs next year is Cotchin or any of our premiership players allowed to sledge Treloar or isnt that allowed because of some mental demons hes had. We all understand these issues like when you pick a club to go to bevause you expect to win premierships and you end up with Zippo and the club you turned your back on becomes a premiership powerhouse. Its understandable that youd be depressed but as a Tigers man Id like to see our blokes hang crap on the Collingwood players including Bucks Treloar
-
Yep allowed but catch won't do it, but someone like caddy would and probably has
-
I hope it never stops all game personally. Not a fan of bagging people's families etc but something like this should be mean, aggressive and relentless.
-
Bucks Treloars going to be 0 and 3 by this time next year
-
Provided there's no comments about his mental struggles this year, family, race, gender and religion and it's just footy-related quips then it's all fine. Treloar didn't have an issue publicly saying the Pies had a better list than ours or going over and rubbing Cotch on the top of his head after we lost to them in 2016. Treloar would know already he is going to cop it from over the fence from the Tiger Army when round 2, 2020 comes around.
TWO NIL
TWO NIL
TWO NIL TWO NIL TWO NIL

Technically they are already at 0-3:
2017 - spent September watching on from the stands as we won the flag.
2018 - choked in the Granny after kicking the first 5 goals.
2019 - choked in the Prelim before an in vain last quarter comeback only to fall short by less than a kick. Then watched on from the stands again as we won another flag thrashing the opposition they lost to.
-
there is no technical way u can spin giving us a point in 2018 over collingwood
-
Counts for nothing since they didn't win.
Preliminaryship haha.
Same with 2019. Played their GF in the prelim again!

I was more judging the Pies alone since Treloar made his remarks in 2016. They have failed in 2017, 2018 & 2019 = 0-3.
It's 2-0 to us in a direct comparison. Yep, we blew a chance in 2018. Winning premierships is the only thing that counts in the end.

He got traded at the end of the 2015 season, so would be 0-4
