AFL ROUND 4
Brisbane vs Richmond
Sunday, 15th April, 4:40 PM AEST @ the 'Gabba
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/4/bl-v-rich
Any OERites going to see the game live?
-
Brisbane have improved and are not the usual rabble we play . Still if we play with the same conviction as we have for the opening 3 rounds we are starring 4-0 in the face .
Dare I say it , percentage booster and top of the ladder .

Dare I say it , percentage booster and top of the ladder .
Need to beat Brisbane by more than Geelong beats Hawthorn . And by alot more than Adelaide beats Essendon.
The top position is ours

Tip: Matty to post heavily in the "Sack Hardwick" thread if we lose...
...then if we beat Melbourne the following week, go back to calling people out for not praising him....

If we lose to Brisbane we will undo a lot of the good work we have put together over the last 3 weeks. The next 2 weeks are huge for us for confidence and momentum, Brisbane is a must win, a win against The up and coming Melbourne will open a few eyes.
Our biggest danger is getting ahead of ourselves, we need to continue to be workman like and don't take things for granted. We have a good chance to really set the season up, no room for delusions of grandeur.

Whatever dude - so I'm like 99.9% of all the other passionate posters on OER.
I'm just glad they have changed the model after a pathetic and disastrous 2016. No one enjoyed the way we played last year . It is so exciting seeing something different and unexpected this year .
Even I realize that our team contains young and inexperienced players. There will be inconsistencies from time to time . There will be periods of frustration this year .
Hardwick mentioned last year about the talent at the club being as good as its been during his tenure . Seemed farcical at the time because we were playing like a dogs breakfast. Not so silly now . Good players are not getting a game . Miles can't crack the 22 because of team balance.
If we lose to Bris but beat Melb I'll be happy because we'll be 4-1 . We're do I sign .
-
Won our past 9 against Brisbane.
Past 15 games -13 wins 1 Loss 1 Draw .
Coach Hardwick never lost to Brisbane .

Miles can't play seniors because he hasn't been upgraded

Miles is on the senior list. A

Can anyone definitively confirm if Miles has been upgraded

I thought we upgraded Castagna?

Match preview: Brisbane Lions v Richmond
AFL.com.au
12 April 2017
SUMMARY
Richmond has a golden opportunity to continue its unbeaten start to the season on Easter Sunday. The Tigers have been the early season surprise packets, taking care of Carlton, Collingwood and, most impressively, West Coast at the weekend to be joint competition leaders. Led by white-hot Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin, they're getting contributions from all over the ground and have shown an ability to grind out wins. The Lions have also turned a few heads to start 2017 despite their 1-2 record. In the past fortnight against Essendon and St Kilda they've run down big deficits to hit the lead before fading in the final quarter. Dayne Beams has been spectacular in his return from chronic knee problems, while young defender Harris Andrews looks a good match-up for Jack Riewoldt. The Lions have shown they'll be competitive this year, but if the Tigers are serious about playing finals, they'll get the job done here – just.
WHERE AND WHEN: The Gabba, Sunday, April 16, 4.40pm AEST
PAST FIVE TIMES
R14, 2016, Richmond 17.15 (117) d Brisbane Lions 11.9 (75) at the MCG
R3, 2015, Richmond 21.11 (137) d Brisbane Lions 8.10 (58) at the Gabba
R16, 2014, Richmond 12.7 (79) d Brisbane Lions 7.12 (54) at the MCG
R5, 2014, Richmond 15.16 (106) d Brisbane Lions 9.9 (63) at the Gabba
R20, 2013, Richmond 14.13 (97) d Brisbane Lions 11.8 (74) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Richmond controlled the contest from start to finish when these teams last played. They had 40 more disposals, 32 more marks, 25 more inside 50s and won the scoring shots 32-20. Jack Riewoldt starred with 21 disposals, 10 marks and four goals.
2. The Tigers have been strong in contested possessions this season, ranked equal fourth with an average of 151 a game. The Lions are ranked 11th. In contrast the teams are ranked 17th and 18th respectively for uncontested possessions.
3. Richmond has dominated the Lions over a long period of time, winning the past nine matches. Since 2005 they've won 13, lost one and drawn one, with the only Lions victory coming in round seven, 2009.
4. The Tigers have also had their way with matches at the Gabba, leading 10-8, including winning the past seven. The Lions' last home victory against Richmond was in 2004.
5. Another win and it will be the first time since 1995 Richmond has won its opening four games of a season. The Tigers reached the preliminary final that season.
6. Dustin Martin's brilliant start to the season has been reflected in the Schick AFL Player Ratings. Following his 40 disposals and two goals against West Coast last week, Martin vaulted six places to a career-high 15th overall.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Justin Leppitsch
After being sacked as Lions coach at the end of last season, Leppitsch will return to the Gabba for the first time in his assistant coaching role with Richmond. While Leppitsch won't have a direct influence on Sunday's result, the former three-time premiership star would love nothing more than getting the W against his former club.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 13 points
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-04-11/match-preview-brisbane-lions-v-richmond
-
Does anyone reckon it's Leppas influence that has been the catalyst or is it the whole coaching turnover?
-
It's Blake Caracella , who will be a senior coach sooner rather than later
-
Caracella will replace Buckley at Collingwood next year.....we will replace Caracella with Stevie J though - best football brain out there... :shh
-
As long as we tell them to look for another job but come back if they can't then all is fine
-
Tigers wary of new-look Lions
richmondfc.com.au
13 April 2017
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick is under no illusions about the challenge the Tigers will confront in their Round 4 clash with a much-improved Brisbane side at the Gabba on Sunday.
“They’re playing some pretty good footy without getting the results,” Hardwick said.
“Defensively, they set up behind the ball very well. Offensively, there’s some things that they’re doing that are quite exciting for their football club.
Be part of our special Anzac Eve blockbuster and secure a Level 1 or Level 2a Reserved Seat, plus access to three other games
“We’ve got to make sure we come prepared to play because they’re a side that is capable of kicking high scores in a short period of time.
“We’ve seen that in the three games they’ve played . . . they’ve kicked six or seven goals per quarter.
“So we’ve got to make sure, defensively, we come switched on, ready to go.
“Any side that’s got Rockliff, Beams, Zorko, Rich, these type of players . . . they’re really good players. You allow those players to play on their own terms they’re going to hurt you on the scoreboard . . .
“It’s going to be a tough game. It always is tough to go away and play interstate.
“We’ve played some pretty good footy up there, but we understand it’s a new coaching group up there . . . it’s going to be game on.
“We’re playing some okay football, but we’ve still got a fair way to go. There’s some areas of our game that we certainly need to improve.”

BRISBANE V RICHMOND
Sunday, April 16, 4.40pm at the Gabba
Team news
The Lions could be without Darcy Gardiner for Sunday’s clash, as he picked up — and struggled — with a corked thigh last weekend. Ryan Bastinac could come in after a best-on-ground effort in the NEAFL on the weekend. Ben Griffiths is unlikely to be fit for the Lions clash after his concussion injury, but Nick Vlastuin should be right to play. Potential inclusions could be Anthony Miles, Connor Menadue, Oleg Markov and Nathan Drummond.
Brisbane burning question: How does Brisbane stop Dustin Martin?
He’s one of the best players in the competition at the moment — and close to the hardest to stop, as Martin is dominating both in the middle (No. 1 in the league for kicks, No. 4 for clearances and No. 6 contested possessions) and up forward (eight goals). The Lions aren’t known for tagging, so they might just go head-to-head with Martin and back their structure and ability to win the hard ball and clearances, which they’ve shown significant improvement in this year.
Richmond burning question: Is it all too good to be true?
Following wins over Carlton and Collingwood, the victory against a contender in West Coast was the one the footy world needed to see. The Tigers have been super to date. Under coach Damien Hardwick, the Tigers have totally changed their approach to the game. They’re now the No. 1 team in the comp for defending opposition ball movement, while their excellent press has seen them rocket to No. 1 for points from forward-half turnovers (47.7). The players are confident to move the ball quickly, they run in waves and the smaller forward line is working a treat. A tick to Dimma.
Predicted post-game headline
Tigers rue slow start as Lions hang on
Tip: Brisbane by 14 points

Curbing Dusty as simple as ABC for Lions ...
DEVISING a strategy to slow down Dustin Martin is proving a headache for the Brisbane Lions, with coach Chris Fagan conceding they had multiple plans to curb the Tiger's influence when the teams meet on Sunday.

Spot on, RR. The upsets across the comp. last week and today should serve as a reminder that this is a very even season and you can't afford to be even 5% off your game against anyone.
The media sure still don't respect us despite our 3-0 start. Many are now tipping Brisbane simply because it's their home game (hello Robbo!). They've clearly missed the fact we've won the last 7 times up at the 'Gabba since 2005 ::).

NO LATE CHANGES.

Was about to post the same. That on top of all the balls he couldn't even get his hands to and I've shut the door on that tiny little bit of hope I had for him

Thanks umpires
More of the same please

Elton wouldn't get a kick against North Ballarat .

Then he does that :lol :lol

Clunk's a great mark and kicks horribly :banghead
-
Bests for far for mine: McIntosh, Georgie, Rance, Prestia, Jack, Nanks.
We can't be complacent. Brisbane have had one quarter in the first 3 games where they kicked 6-7 goals and got themselves back into games.
3rd qtr starts: Out of the middle and Elton marks well. Misses.
Dusty gets it back but his banana is touched through.

Just such dumb footy

Ordinary goalkicking tonight from us. Only Jack's was quality. It's cost us a percentage booster tonight with 33 shots to 15 yet we're 'only' 47 up.
Grrr! Goal to Brisbane.

Good win on the road but geez we make alot of errors, will need to tighten up in that area over the next few weeks.
-
Brisbane...the gift that keeps on giving . 10 in a row against that mob.
-
I'm not a fan but I reckon Astbury has been excellent tonight :clapping
Ditto Grigg
Lesser likes played well tonight when you consider Dusty & Cotch were reasonably held by their high standards. A good sign!

Yep Dusty right off the boil
And I thought at times Cotch just tried to be too cute
-
Will be people talk about Brisbane being lucky due to our poor kicking at goal or does it only apply if the team we are playing against kicks a lot of points?
-
I'm not a fan but I reckon Astbury has been excellent tonight :clapping
Ditto Grigg
Dunno about grigg WP but agree on Astbury
-
Grigg was BOG
-
Grigg was BOG
Agree, easily BOG
Sometimes you have to take blinkers off and assess
With certain players I confess that I struggle to the blinkers off but couldn't today, Grigg was exceptional
:thumbsup
-
Grigg has played previous well at the Gabba
Having a great year is Grigga
Easy BOG tonight
Astbury not far behind him either
-
Grigg and Jack best.
Martin and Nank had their colours lowered.
Good to get the points but would like to have seen some better footy for the last 2.5 quarters.
-
Grigg had a corker, arseberries was good too, took some nice intercept and contested marks. Macca was right amongst it too, especially in the first half.
-
Was going to ask last week when Griggs contract was due but after a BOG performance I'm just going to assume his current one expires this year? Always has a good (half) year when his contracts getting negotiated

According to this 'journo' on the AFL website, we were lucky to win :wallywink :stupid :lol
1. Tigers' bursts far from convincing
Richmond has finished round four in the upper rungs of the ladder, undefeated with four wins. But despite a comfortable victory over the Brisbane Lions, the Tigers still looked shaky. They played very well in patches, scoring quickly and tackling fiercely. But for the majority of quarters they just managed to hold the Lions at bay by the length of a Dustin Martin "don't argue". They were sloppy at times, and struggled to maintain their manic pressure. Upcoming matches against Melbourne and Adelaide will test the Tigers if they continue their inconsistency. Despite this, at the start of the season any Tigers supporter would have taken a 4-0 start – their best since 1995.

Agree ....go hard for Lever instead get Tom McCartin & get games into Chol & Moore asap....
Dunno how we'd get it done but Lever, Hopper, McCartin, Clarvino & Naish would be the perfect off-season (if Martin stays)....for good measure get X. Richards for nix....
Wouldn't mind going after Spencer from Melbourne too .....looks very promising but won't keep Gawn out...
-
Good to see him getting a bit more down & dirty these days but seriously, Shaun "Bombs away!/The goal is mine!" Grigg is still the most selfish player in the AFL....

Well we weren't "lucky to win" but otherwise, that "journo" is spot on....

That's a game I won't be watching again.
It reminded me of us winning games in "13, "14 and "15 against weak opposition. We got the 4 points but it showed us more about where we need to improve than what we are good at. I don't know how many times during those years I'd walk out of the MCG disappointed after a win, but it was a lot because of the way we were playing.
We need to make sure we do certain things (tackle, pressure and clean disposal) no matter what the score is or who is our opposition.
In the second half we played like millionaires which is really disappointing after our first 3 weeks. We need to be workman like and cut the other crap out.
This is a really even season and a team imo can pinch one this year if they do the simple hard things right every week.
I hope this is a bit of a wake up call to train to work harder.
The one satisfying thing was they all looked a bit flat after the win which they should have because the second half wasn't exceptable.

Yep, this is the real danger, they become lazy and undisciplined.

Very poor inside 50 efficiency yesterday, still don't get when a runner crosses the 50 arc why they just don't keep running towards goal rather than chipping at full pace which invariably doesn't hit the target. Almost like they were told to take the more difficult options because on occasions goals were there for the taking but the easiest options in each case were clearly ignored.
-
Not only are we winning ugly ....we are apparently flogging ugly too.
-
Grigg is still the most selfish player in the AFL....
Not so sure about that ... or if true then he certainly had a couple of apprentices running around in the VFL yesterday :rollin

Grigg culprit #1 from outside 50. Ugly football that will see quality opposition repeat score off the rebound.

Essendon and St kilda must be really crap then .
Can't believe I was nervous about yesterday's game .

By the sounds of it you were happy with yesterday's game?
Wowee!

I'm ecstatic to be 4-0 but I actually agree with you - about as boring as a 50 point interstate victory gets .
Looking forward to the next block of 4 games to see where we are really at . 2 wins should be the minimum expectation.

By definition, if something is manic it is also unsustainable?
Mostly agree with what was said. Sloppy win that could have been slicker.
The next 3 weeks will be telling. If we lose to Melbourne I'll be extremely upset. We owe that mob big time.

Watched it. Would have loved to see it blow out more to 70-80 points. Looked like the took the foot of the pedal a bit.
Some poor decision making by the players and inaccurate shots at goal.
Few blokes looked like they were just having a run on the park/weekend off.

Tigers aren't a one-man show
Dustin Martin was the talk of the competition over the first three weeks as he led Richmond to a perfect season start. But against the Lions on Sunday night, 'Dusty' was quiet, being outplayed by Mitch Robinson and held to 16 goalless disposals. But that didn't stop the Tigers. Reliable Shaun Grigg racked up 30 touches, former Sun Dion Prestia 22, Brandon Ellis 21, Bachar Houli and Trent Cotchin 20 apiece. Throw in four goals each to Jack Riewoldt and rookie Jason Castagna and you get the picture – it was a good team effort. Sure, the Lions aren't the greatest barometer, but winning without an influence from Martin has to put a smile on coach Damien Hardwick's face before the sterner challenges arrive.
