Lyon slams Hardwick selection error
By Justin Talent

Garry Lyon says that Richmond coach Damien Hardwick’s decision to play Steven Morris in the club’s 76 point loss to Adelaide on Sunday went against the core philosophy that has brought the Tigers success in 2017.
The 28-year-old collected only eight disposals and made six tackles in his return game from an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury sustained last year, as the Tigers conceded 16 goals to four after quarter time - offering little resistance to the dominant Crows after a promising first term.
The former Melbourne forward says the decision to play Morris over a younger Tigers player was the first team selection mistake Hardwick has made all season.
“What do we think the success of Richmond has been based on? Work rate and the introduction of young legs,” he said on SEN Breakfast.
“What we thought had held them back over the past three years was playing middle of the range players. Why did they bring Steve Morris back into that side?
“I’m not having a crack at Steve Morris so much, I’m having a crack at the philosophy. You’ve been brave and you’ve been loyal to your young kids. You’re sitting equal top of the ladder, five and zip, and you go back to Steve Morris.
“Steve Morris, if anything was part of the old problems of Richmond: a player that is going to take you to a certain level and is never going to take you any further.”
Mike Sheahan disagreed, believing a single selection does not signify a change in philosophy for Hardwick.
“He didn’t abandon his philosophy…I think there’s way too much emphasis on one change,” he said.
However both Lyon and Sheahan agree that the Tigers are still set to play finals football this year.
“The rest of the comp, apart from our big three that we have spoken about, aren’t going to separate themselves and I think with the head start of five, I think they should make the eight,” said Lyon.
“I think Richmond will definitely win two of the next four which will leave them at 7-3. You’ve got to finish in the top eight if you’re 7-3,” Sheahan said.

Yeh but does anyone even respect anything that comes out of this dogs mouth?
-
Apparently Steve Morris said that Lyon shouldn't have rooted Billy's wife eithr.
Mexican standoff
-
I suppose a home-wrecker will sniff out a club-wrecker every day of the week.
-
:lol
-
Seriously I don't think the selection of Steve Morris made any difference to the result
-
Agreed jackstar. Still a stupid selection though.

That's the point.
-
He is 100% correct. Backwards selection. Old Richmond.
-
Agree with the knob jockey.
The sentimentality of rewarding a player who has fought back from a knee injury is a thing of the past. Steve may be a good club man and tries his guts out but (and all due respect to Steve) at the end of the day he just isn't up to it, nor is he the future of the playing group.
We would have been better delisting Steve and adding Boomer Harvey to our list who would at least provide a much better output than Steve for one season but at the end of the day neither player is the way forward.
Dimma, please get this message into your new mantra and forget playing these older recycled players while we have young kids wanting and needing the experience.

Its more about the decision and the message it sends rather than the actual impact on the result.
Be assured Morris was never going to have any impact on the result, good or bad
-
Morris could have made it worse. Maybe in a tight game he could have been a goal difference. Not the way forward.
-
the wife rooter is correct imo
-
Never again please

Gear-ie Lyon

Hopefully stays injury-free so we can de-list him guilt-free at the end of the year.
Loved this guy when we got him and was IMO almost AA small defender at his peak. But his skills have not improved and the game has changed so that he cannot play to his strengths anymore.
Have to wonder if we'd have de-listed him at the end of 2016 if he wasn't recovering from a knee reco. Personally I would have, or maybe done it regardless and just looked brutal.
-
We couldn't have delisted him at the end of last year because thanks to another stroke of genius from Dan the Man and co., he was still contracted for this year.
-
I reckon Gary and Billy should break bread by doing her gyroes style on each end :shh
-
I respect Billy too much
-
the wife rooter is correct imo
To be correct Owl Billy had separated from his wife at the time so ex wife rooter would be more accurate.
-
separated and divorced mean two different things to be even more precise, hence he was still married
-
They're both knob jockeys who most probably cheated on their ex wives when married so it feels like karma to me
-
Serial dog.

The fact he has been dropped after one game shows that they are admitting his selection last week was a huge mistake.... :rollin
