Richmond has elevated young ruckman Ivan Soldo from the rookie list to its senior list.
Soldo, who represented the ACT in basketball as a junior, was originally signed by the Tigers as a Category B rookie in 2004.
He’s made impressive progress with Richmond’s VFL team over the past couple of seasons and now is in line to make his AFL debut after being upgraded from the rookie list.
The 204cm, 106kg, 21-year-old is the cousin of experienced Tiger ruckman Ivan Maric.
The final 22 to face the Bulldogs will be announced on richmondfc.com.au this evening at 6.25pm.

2004 when he was 8?
Or 2014 when he was 18?

I wanted this at the start of the year. Maybe they'll pick him with his cousin this week. ;)
Good luck son and well done. :clapping
-
Stuff it up and we will be on you like a ton of bricks
-
Waiting with bated breath to read a few peoples opinions on his game :snidegrin
-
We're not expecting anything.
He's a rookie who's not played until last year?
Good luck to the big kid b
That's all.
-
Can take a pack mark so that's a start. Is a driven young man who wants to be our number 1 ruckman the start of 2018...this is a good start if selected :clapping

Yep I'd go that way, pick both of them. Puts pressure on the Doggies immediately
Soldo to play the Griffiths / Elton role = mainly forward, ruck chop out in centre of the wing & F50
Good thing is with Ivvy M, you can plonk him the goal square and will give a great contest as well
-
Can he still get to the contest is the question
-
The unfortunate thing for poor Soldo is that some site experts have written him off already.
So therefore when this green young fella does get a game and struggles early on I can only imagine how they will be pumping themselves as "getting another one right".

Who is the site expert who has written him off? Most people would just be expecting him to provide a contest, nothing more and nothing less.

You would think so wouldnt you

Good luck Hans, may the tiger force be with you - even if some on the forum are not.
-
Good luck to him. I hope he is given the chance to play the Bulldogs.

Soldo to debut on Saturday night.

Good luck to the kid in his debut, even though I don't rate him I really hope he succeeds, but on a fast track against the doggies... :help

Appropriate comment on May 4th.

Ive got to admit I gave this guy no hope at all. But I've seen approx 2 vfl games this year and what I've seen of Soldo made me surprisingly optimistic.
I hope the fellow does well enough in the big leagues so we never have to talk of the Hamspud ever again
-
I'm not gonna be hard on him.
Yet.
-
Well done lad. Just show some of Nanka's heart and all will be well.

Apparently, more than one :huh

If Griff and Elton were only required to crash packs then I hope Soldo gets the same leeway.

Griifths and Elton are supposed to be kpfs not ruckmen. Soldo just needs to do what Nankervis did compete hard at the ruck contest and throw his weight around when the ball hits the ground.
If he can take the odd mark around the ground great.
Good or bad what a great learning curve for the kid AFL exposure and some sort of idea of what it will take to become a good ruckman.Good or bad game it is a win win for us.
-
Chuffed the kid finally gets a go :clapping
Should have played last week vs Adelaide rotating with Nank from CHF.
Another upside of the magic of Hampson being injured.

Ivan his cousin's heart will be good enough, he was an absolute warrior.

predict he will 3 goals whilst resting in the pocket....

Like that idea. :thumbsup
He's big enough to ruck, is he skilled enough to be a ruckman?
What he like aerobically?
Will he get to enough contests?

I think he'll do well vs the bulldogs and might suprise a few people. Particularly if he is rested at chf enough as his endurance isnt quite a strength as yet.
I thought he was impressive against Collingwood in the JLT series. From memory he came on after half time and played rotating ruck/chf. Kicked 1.2, took a number of marks in the f50 and linked up with multiple score involvements.

So he's expected to do more than Griff and Elton? I see. Wonder how the Hammer fans will rate and compare him :shh

Canberra product Ivan Soldo set to make AFL debut for Richmond Tigers
Caden Helmers
The Age
6 May 2017
When Ivan Soldo stood next to his cousin and Richmond Tigers ruckman Ivan Maric for a photo, never could he have imagined it would launch an AFL career.
The former basketball player from Canberra had barely laid boot to ball outside of gala days playing for Daramalan College but was keen to try his hand at Australian rules.
Soldo told his cousin Maric he was thinking about having a crack and before long the Richmond cult figure was rushing to show club officials a photo of the two together - at 204 centimetres and 106 kilograms, Soldo is the bigger cousin.
Now the Western Bulldogs will have to contend with the 21-year-old's sizeable frame in his AFL debut at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
"When I was playing basketball everyone was like 'he could play, he could be a ruckman'," Soldo said.
"That was a little joke at the start but I actually wanted to play. But then they were like 'if he's committed to it, let's see how he goes in the next couple of years'.
"It was weird circumstances, but it's all working out now. A lot of the blokes here in Melbourne have been playing since they were four, footy is pretty crazy here. It's nuts."
Soldo edged out his cousin in the race to fill the shoes of first-choice ruckman Toby Nankervis, who is unavailable through suspension, but laughed that's only because he was "the tallest bloke available".
Soldo has excelled in the VFL and had a hunch all week he was going to play, but it still made for a "pretty cool" feeling when his teammates started jumping all over him after the announcement.
He wasn't concerned by the prospect of playing against the reigning premiers - the only worry he had was trying to keep all of his lunch from hitting the floor.
"I was having my lunch so I had to make sure [the boys] didn't jump on my plate, because everyone was coming from all angles," Soldo said.
"It hasn't been easy but I've embraced every challenge and I just enjoyed all the bad times and all the good times. It's been a bit of a trek, a bit of a journey that's for sure."
Soldo made his way to Punt Road as a category B rookie 2014 and was named to make his AFL debut against the reigning premiers just hours after being elevated to the senior list.
He has certainly come a long way since filling in for Daramalan College's 3rd XV rugby team at Viking Park on a Friday night four years ago.
"Rugby was fun because I was pretty heavy back then because I wasn't going to the gym and that," Soldo said.
"So rugby was easy… then you compare it to footy - far out, so much running."
He will receive some support from recalled tall utility Todd Elton in the battle against Bulldogs ruck Tom Boyd, who is looking to rediscover his stellar form that guided the Bulldogs to a premiership last year.

Must be an optical illusion but his legs just don't look right to me.
-
Soldo has been solid
-
Already 10 times better than the spud.
-
Did he play after qtr time?
-
Won't keep his spot but looked promising.
-
Keep him in with Toaby and stuff Elton off.
-
Really struggled with the pace of the game but that's to be expected, real shame about Nanks missing as he could have been the difference tonight.
-

yep

Double yep. Can see why those would want to continue playing Eltons delight but Hans has upside.

Hampson-esque :clapping
At least for him it was his first game and has lots of upside... unlike the other who has dished up the same poo year after year
-
Soldo was great last night and loved how he gets first hand to the ball. Will only get better over time when be gains confidence. Can mark and kick.
-
Not bad for a debut.....liked it....though probably not as much as Bontempelli did.....
-
Reserving judgement for his ruck work when he competes against a genuine ruck
-
Lin Jong not a genuine ruck? :huh :huh3
-
:lol better ruck than Hampson
-
I grew up with Yugos, as they were referred to then and one thing I love about them is they're stuffn mad which translates to passion.
The athletic ones are bloody good and will try and hurt blokes.
Give him game time with Big Toaby and reckon he will surprise us all.
Can't be worse than fkknuckle.
-
Lin Jong not a genuine ruck? :huh :huh3
He would be....in Saigon firsts.
-
Our second best ruck. Happy to give him more game time.
-
Ok so he won 40 odd hit outs. He has a lot of potential but did any hit a richmond man? That's as much his fault as the mosquito fleet at his feet. He has much to learn but he's a keeper.
-
We like what Soldo's selling
Richmond's confidence had grown in the past six months that Ivan Soldo would grow into an AFL player and on Saturday night we saw why. The 21-year-old made his debut three years after joining the Tigers as a project rookie, and the big strides he has made were obvious early, both in the centre square and in marking contests around the ground. Soldo received his jumper pre-game from cousin Ivan Maric after edging the veteran for selection this week as the Tigers looked to replace suspended big man Toby Nankervis. With Nankervis due back against Fremantle next week, Soldo will likely return to the VFL, but after 42 hit-outs against the Bulldogs, the Tigers have proof their project has delivered results.

Considering his history, not quite a nayptural but potentially something better than what we've had.

6 to advantage in the first quarter.

8 to Bomps advantage

I fear that he'd get dominated by any average ruckman. Boyd isn't a ruckman
-
I'm sure he will at this early stage of his career and after only playing the sport for about 5 minutes...the pay off won't be for at least another couple of years...and he's still already better than Hamspud...
-
We need to draft a couple of GENUINE ruckman, and stop looking for the hybrid type which we have done for too long.
-
A hybrid as in a ruck /forward? Because that's exactly what we need, we just don't have a good one and I think you'll find Soldo is being developed as a genuine ruckman. Nonetheless, we could do with more of both - I think we should look at someone like Tom Goodwin from Coburg at the very least...maybe try and lure over Spencer from Melbourne, he won't be getting many games behind a fit Gawn.

See I think Nank could be the hybrid ruck/forward.
He gives you 100% effort in the contest in the air or on the ground, is a great kick and rucks well. And most importantly is AGGRESSIVE. Unlike what we have on our list now.
Even Chol is more of a hybrid than a potential ruckman.
