Your team’s best and fairest leader so far
By Luke Sicari
SEN
18 May 2017
The AFL season has passed small sample size territory, meaning we can start to accurately determine who’s been performing at their optimum.
While the competition is as tight as ever and it’s hard to get a read on team form lines, there have been countless individuals excelling at their clubs. Two months into the 2017 season, who is the clubhouse best and fairest leader at your team?
Richmond – Dustin Martin
To have the propensity to change the entire complexion of a game is an aspect that is reserved for the true superstars. Dustin Martin has cemented himself into that category this season, a fantastic opening two months confirming his status as one of the game’s elites.
Damien Hardwick’s braveness to move Martin to full forward has proved to be a masterstroke, as the tattooed Tiger is just as deadly around goal as he is in the middle. After booting just nine last year, Martin already has 13 goals after eight games, projecting his influence on the contest.
If not him, then who? Trent Cotchin

Grigg would be in the top top 4-5

Best 21 and under: Daniel Rioli
Recruit of the year: Toby Nankervis
Most improved: Dan Butler
Most courageous: Trent Cotchin
Best team player: Kane Lambert

All of the small forward's traits were on display as he shook off two opponents on the boundary and combined with Dion Prestia with some quick handballs before threading the ball from deep in the pocket.
Mark of the year: Ben Griffiths, round two v Collingwood.
The tall forward's raw talent emerged with a soaring pack mark, leaping over and past three Magpies and getting a ride on Ben Reid's shoulders.
Game Milestones:
Round one, Bachar Houli (150th game);
Round five, Josh Caddy (100th game), Dion Prestia (100th game);

Brandon Ellis will go close to 5th
-
Prestia :gobdrop
-
For me it would be
1.Martin
2.Rance
3.Nankervis
4.Cotchin
5.Lambert
I vaguely recall that the B+F is given to the player who fulfils his role the best right? So Martin is the standout but Rance has been generating a lot of attack from defence and Nankervis has been solo rucking for most of the year. I am also tipping Lambert to sneak in as his attack on the ball and his involvement in getting the ball forward has been crucial.
Also expecting Astbury and Riewoldt to poll well also.
-
Reckon Astbury and Grimes would be knocking on the door of top 5 too - especially Astbury
-
Reckon Lambert could nab it. If Jackson could then.... :shh
-
Using the AFL coaches votes, a possible guide to our B&F top 5:

Grigg's votes surely must have all come from our side...
-
Definitely need Hampson to get 2 more games to make 100 :shh

Grigg's votes surely must have all come from our side...
I don't think we rate him that highly, opposition tactic to give him another year

THE AWARDS
Jack Dyer Medal – 1st
It is 51 years since the Jack Dyer Medal was first awarded to the winner of Richmond’s Best and Fairest, and this year we award the 52nd medal.
The inaugural Richmond Best and Fairest was awarded to Bill Mahoney in 1911, but in 1964 the name of the award was changed in honour of Jack Dyer, the man acclaimed as the greatest Tiger of all.
Jack Dyer is the most decorated player in Richmond Best and Fairest history, winning six Club champion awards, including four in-a-row from 1937 to 1940.
Since 1964, there have been 11 multiple Jack Dyer Medallists, including Kevin Bartlett, who won five, Wayne Campbell, who won four, and Geoff Raines and Trent Cotchin, who have won three.
Other dual Jack Dyer Medallists include Royce Hart, Maurice Rioli, Dale Weightman, Tony Free, Matthew Knights, Joel Bowden, and Brett Deledio.
Jack Titus Medal – 2nd
The Jack Titus Medal is named after the Tigers’ dual best and fairest, dual premiership player, coach and hall of fame member.
Maurie Fleming Medal – 3rd
The Maurie Fleming Medal is named after Richmond’s long-time administrator, who served as president from 1958 to 1963.
Fred Swift Medal – 4th
The Fred Swift Medal is named after Richmond’s 1967 premiership captain, who played 146 games in the 1950s and 60s.
Kevin Bartlett Medal – 5th
The Kevin Bartlett Medal is named after the Richmond Immortal, who won the Jack Dyer Medal five times over a stellar 403-game career.
Francis Bourke Award
The Francis Bourke Award recognises the player who embodies the team’s trademarks of awareness, relentless, disciplined and united, and is voted on a 3, 2, 1 basis by the playing group each week of the season.
Awareness is the players’ ability to look outside themselves and think of other players. This is evident on game day through communication, covering another player’s opponent and picking each other up.
Being Disciplined and United is playing your role for the benefit of the team. It is adherence to the game plan and structures the coaches have in place. Players are accountable for their own decisions and own the outcomes, both positive and negative
Relentless is constantly being bold in attacking the game in offence and the ball carrier in defence – regardless of the score. It is being dedicated to fulfilling our own expectations and those of our supporters.
Michael Roach Leading Goalkicker Award
This award is named after Richmond Hall of Fame member, Michael Roach.
Michael Roach is a seven-time Richmond leading goalkicker, and one of only two players in the Club’s history to kick 100 goals in a season. This award is presented to the player who has kicked the most goals for the Tigers during the season.
Guinane Medal, VFL Best & Fairest
The Guinane medal is named after the most prominent father-son combination in the Club’s history - Paddy Guinane and his father Dan.
Dan Guinane, a 179cm, 100kg defender, played 103 senior games with the Tigers from 1934-39 and 1942-43. He was a member of the Richmond side that lost the 1942 Grand Final to Essendon. In 1940-41, Guinane was playing coach of the Richmond reserves.
His son, Patrick, a 191cm, 95.5kg, key forward, played 146 games and kicked 216 goals for the Tigers in a career spanning 11 seasons, from 1958-68. ‘Paddy’ Guinane was vice-captain of Richmond’s drought-breaking 1967 premiership team and twice won the Club’s leading goalkicker award (1966 and 1968). Paddy also coached the Tigers’ under-19s in 1978-79 and then the reserves in 1980-81, before serving as a Club Board member from 1985-87, and again in 1989.
Bill Cosgrove/Harry Jenkins Best First Year Player Award
This award is named in honour of former Richmond player Bill Cosgrove, and influential Richmond talent recruiter, Harry Jenkins. Bill Cosgrove played for the Tigers before enlisting in the RAAF during World War 2, where was sadly killed in action. The Bill Cosgrove/Harry Jenkins Award is presented to the best first year player at the Richmond Football Club.
To be eligible for the Jenkins/Cosgrove Medal for Best First Year Player, the player:
• Must be younger than 21 years of age on 1 January of the award year; and
• Must play his first AFL game with the Club.
• An eligible player who finishes in the highest position in the Jack Dyer medal will be awarded the Jenkins/Cosgrove Medal
David Mandie Community Award
This award was created in honour of our former number one ticketholder and great Richmond supporter, David Mandie, who was also widely acknowledged for his outstanding philanthropic support of the broader community.
The winner of this award must:
- Contribute to both Club community partners, and other community based organisations
- Show compassion and empathy towards disadvantaged and underprivileged people
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn about different community groups, including Indigenous & Multicultural; and
- Show integrity and leadership throughout the Club and community

Under the Jack Dyer Medal voting system, all of the team’s players on match day receive a rating from 0-5 based on their overall performance.
The match committee assesses each player’s offensive, defensive, and contest impacts on the game.
After those game phases have been analysed, the 0-5 rating is given, as a joint match committee decision.
Votes are not allocated for what the match committee deems a below-average performance.

Dustin Martin: Richmond champ adds best and fairest to Brownlow and Norm Smith medal haul
SAM LANDSBERGER,
Herald Sun
3 October 2017
DUSTIN Martin has sealed his golden season with back-to-back Jack Dyer Medals on a night where premiership captain Trent Cotchin revealed he was one bad year away from quitting as skipper.
Richmond’s match committee awarded the devastating midfielder a perfect score of five votes for his Norm Smith Medal-winning performance in Saturday’s Grand Final.
That sealed a nine-vote victory over All-Australian captain Alex Rance with Kane Lambert’s supreme consistency barging him into the top three in the night’s biggest surprise.
The VFL recruit ranked No.2 at the Tigers for goal assists and tackles this year in just his third AFL season.
Lambert, 25, was overlooked in five national drafts despite winning the VFL Rising Star at Carlton’s VFL team and then dominating for Williamstown.
Martin’s 22 contested possessions on Saturday were the second-most recorded in a Grand Final – one shy of 2003 Norm Smith winner Simon Black (Brisbane Lions).
“I just loved getting out there with all the boys and playing footy. You just don’t have to think about all the other crap in your life for those two hours, you just get out there and do what I’ve loved doing since I was five or six,” Martin said on Monday night.
Asked how he would party after a premiership, Martin said: “The funny thing is, I probably carry on like this every off-season. So this won’t be too much different – but it’s going to be extra special”.
Rance finished runner-up for the second season in a row in front of a sold out Crown Palladium still celebrating the club’s first flag since 1980 and 11th overall.
Premiership captain Cotchin and stingy defender Dylan Grimes, fresh from stopping Adelaide star Eddie Betts, rounded out the top five.
Cotchin revealed he would’ve walked away from his leadership post if 2017 was another bust.
“I remember sitting with my wife (Brooke) after last year and telling her, ‘I’ll give this captaincy thing one more year’,” Cotchin said on Monday night.
“And if it doesn’t go well or if we bomb or we don’t get it right we are going to see if someone else can do the job.
“It’s funny how fickle life can be.”
This year Cotchin has been lauded as one of the game’s great leaders, his reputation rising with an inspirational September.
Martin polled maximum best-and-fairest votes in seven games, including the qualifying final thrashing of Geelong and the Grand Final.
The premiership superstar’s three dominant finals followed his agonising decision to sacrifice nearly $2 million and re-sign at the Tigers instead of crossing to North Melbourne.
Martin, 26, inked a seven-year deal worth $8.75 million to stay at Punt Rd and is now expected to fly overseas on holidays.
Coach Damien Hardwick labelled the surprise premiership “absolutely remarkable” on Monday night.
“(This club) achieved something built on care and unity unlike anything I’ve seen in football in my time before,” Hardwick said.
Martin has finished on the podium in Richmond’s past four best-and-fairests. He was runner-up in 2013 and 2015, placed third in 2014 and has now won the past two.
The explosive onballer’s 2017 honours include the Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith Medal, AFL Coach’s Player of the Year, Leigh Matthews Trophy, Gary Ayres Award for best finals player, All-Australian selection and now a second best-and-fairest.
Martin won the Brownlow with a record 36 votes and record 11 best-on-grounds. He was ranked No.1 in the AFL for inside 50s, centre clearances, score involvements and No.2 for contested possessions and metres gained this year.
The kid from Castlemaine became just the seventh player in VFL-AFL history to own the Brownlow and the Norm Smith and the first to win both in the same season.
He is now one of 26 players to win multiple Jack Dyer Medals and the first to go back-to-back since Cotchin in 2011-12.
Martin has reserved a patch of skin on his left quad for a Tigers premiership tattoo.
