Mid-season All Australian contenders
Nathan Schmook
AFL.com.au
7 June 2017
WITH the 2017 season at its halfway mark, AFL.com.au reporters have turned their minds to naming each club's contenders for the Virgin Australia AFL All Australian team.
RICHMOND
Trent Cotchin: The captain is back to the 2012 form that saw him eventually awarded the Brownlow Medal, leading with his actions and playing a more attacking style. He leads the Tigers for tackles with 73 (No.8 in the AFL) and is standing up in big moments of games.
Dustin Martin: A superstar of the competition, Martin has dominated games with his ball winning, strength in contests and attacking flair. Ranked top 10 in the AFL for disposals (29.9 a game), clearances (6.7) and contested possessions (14.5), and No.2 for metres gained (564.4 a game). Has kicked 16 goals (only Patrick Dangerfield has kicked more among the top-20 possession winners).
Alex Rance: The game's best defender can still shut down his man when he needs to, but his intercept game has gone to a new level. Ranks No.1 in the AFL for intercept possessions (9.0 a game) and has lifted his metres gained from 213.2 a game in 2016 to 300.9 to be a more attacking threat.

Although he has a bit of the yips as of late (which I hope he overcomes after the bye) I would say Jack could get AA with Kennedy's injury and also him and Cameron are not having that many dissimilar seasons on-field performance wise

Jack ranked 7th in the Coleman and 101st for goal assists.
Not going to happen.

All Australian 40-man squad: Who's in the mix from your club?

TWO months ago, AFL.com.au's writers named each club's contenders for the 2017 Virgin Australia AFL All Australian team, and selected their mid-season team of the year.
With two rounds to go, our writers revist their selections, taking into account whose form has improved and whose has stagnated. Which players from your club could make 2017's best team?
RICHMOND
David Astbury
A rock in defence, Astbury has taken on the big jobs and played every game. Involved in 91 one-on-one contests (fourth most in the AFL) and has lost only 18.
Trent Cotchin
Back to his best and relishing more freedom under a new attacking game plan. Averaging 24 possessions (11.3 contested) and a team-high 5.7 tackles, leading by example and standing up at critical moments in games.
Dustin Martin
Arguably the best midfielder in the competition and a short-priced favourite to win his first Brownlow Medal. Has kicked 28 goals and is feared when isolated deep forward. Also averages 28.9 disposals (No.10 in the AFL) and an AFL-high 3.7 centre clearances.
Alex Rance
The intercept king of the AFL, Rance ranks No.1 in the League for intercept possessions (185) and No.3 for intercept marks (60). No.2 in the AFL for spoils (172) and without peer as the game's best key defender.
Jack Riewoldt
Has held a small forward line together and played a selfless role that has been underrated. Kicked 43.30 in 18 games and ranks No.12 in the AFL for overall scoreboard impact (357 points) when goal and behind assists are included.

Thought Grimes might make the squad at least. Unlucky.

Cotchin probably unlucky too. Feel he has been better than Treloar this season, but anyway.
-
Hardwick was shocked Tigers captain Trent Cotchin failed to make the All-Australian squad of 40: “I obviously watch him a lot closer than most, and I still maintain the measure of a player is what you do to the players around you, and he’s made our players better. The measure of him as a captain has been phenomenal at our footy club this year.”
Cotchin joked he was “busy” last night anyway, but said the prize of playing in the finals — with the double chance — was something he wanted more than another individual honour.

3 Bombers in the team ??? (and one ex-Bomber in Hibberd)
Two of them, Hurley and Daniher, should be feeling very lucky right now.
Don't see that Tom Mitchel really did enough to get in to the team either.
-
Mitchell is the lowest impact player I have seen that racks up those numbers
Well maybe apart from Priddis

Maybe Mrs Cotchin should make a statement too

Has McGovern been any better than Astbury?
Vlaustin would have been a shoo-in with a full season.
Selwood in on name.
-
I thought Josh Kennedy was a bit unlucky. The 0-6 start would not have helped him. I would have gone Jacobs over Ryder.
-
Including Selwood is a stretch. Gun player but missed a chunk of the year and really hasn't played at his best for the rest.
Can argue midfielders like Cotchin missing out all day but still think Grimes was real stiff not making the squad at least. One of, of not the most versatile defender in the league. Plays tall, small, rarely beaten and added an attacking quality to his game this season.

McGovern is a much better player than Astbury. Agree Vlas and Selwood
